Marcos 10:17 - 3017 En aquel tiempo, cuando salía Jesús al camino, se le acercó corriendo un hombre, se arrodilló ante él y le preguntó: “Maestro bueno, ¿qué debo hacer para alcanzar la vida eterna?”

18 Jesús le contestó: “¿Por qué me llamas bueno? Nadie es bueno sino sólo Dios.

19 Ya sabes los mandamientos: No matarás, no cometerás adulterio, no robarás, no levantarás falso testimonio, no cometerás fraudes, honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre”.

20 Entonces él le contestó: “Maestro, todo eso lo he cumplido desde muy joven”.

21 Jesús lo miró con amor y le dijo: “Sólo una cosa té falta: Ve y vende lo que tienes, da el dinero a los pobres y así tendrás un tesoro en los cielos. Después, ven y sígueme”.

22 Pero al oír estas palabras, el hombre se entristeció y se fue apesadumbrado, porque tenía muchos bienes.

23 Jesús, mirando a su alrededor, dijo entonces a sus discípulos: “¡Qué difícil les va a ser a los ricos entrar en el Reino de Dios!”

24 Los discípulos quedaron sorprendidos ante estas palabras; pero Jesús insistió: “Hijitos, ¡qué difícil es para los que confían en las riquezas, entrar en el Reino de Dios!”.

25 Más fácil le es a un camello pasar por el ojo de una aguja, que a un rico entrar en el Reino de Dios.

26 Ellos se asombraron todavía más y comentaban entre sí: “Entonces, ¿quién puede salvarse?”

27 Jesús, mirándolos fijamente, les dijo: “Es imposible para los hombres, mas no para Dios. Para Dios todo es posible”.

28 Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Señor, ya ves que nosotros lo hemos dejado todo para seguirte”.

29 Jesús le respondió: “Yo les aseguro: Nadie que haya dejado casa, o hermanos o hermanas, o padre o madre, o hijos o tierras, por mí y por el Evangelio,

30 dejará de recibir, en esta vida, el ciento por uno en casas, hermanos, hermanas, madres, hijos y tierras, junto con persecuciones, y en el otro mundo, la vida eterna”.

Mark 10:17 - 3017 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.

19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’ ”

20 He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.”

21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.”

28 Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.”

29 Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel,

30 who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.

Reflections on Mark 10:17 - 30 Reflexiones en Marcos 10:17 - 30 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Oct. 14, 2012 Today is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Let us examine what the Gospel means and what the Fathers of the Church said. St. Augustine (Confessions 13.19) says he regarded the good teacher as a man and nothing more (as distinct from the assumption that He is good as God incarnate). Note that Jesus immediately asks: “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.”

Hoy es el Vigésimo Octavo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. Vamos a examinar lo que dice el evangelio, y lo que dicen los Padres de la Iglesia. San Agustín (Confesiones 13.19) dice que el hombre solo veía a Jesús como un buen profesor y nada más. No lo veía como Dios Encarnado. Noten como Jesús inmediatamente lo nota preguntando: “¿Porqué me dices bueno? Nadie es bueno sino que Dios.”

The man asks a good question: “What must I do to enter eternal life?” Jesus suggests that he keep the commandments. He answered that he had done pretty good in keeping the commandments since his youth. “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” And Jesus looked upon him and loved him. Jesus must have been very impressed with this young man. He was moved to put his sincerity to the test. He was doing pretty good, but he could do better.

Jesús sugiere que guarde los mandamientos. Él contesto que ya los había cumplido desde su juventud “Maestro, todos estos los he observado desde mi juventud.” Entonces, Jesús, mirándole, le amo. Jesús ha de haber estado muy impresionado con este joven. Fue conmovido a poner su sinceridad a la prueba. Iba muy bien, pero podía hacer algo mejor.

“You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” This was the same invitation he had given the Apostles. They had left all things and followed him. This young man had the invitation to be Apostle # 13. He hesitated. He balked. His countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

“Una cosa té falta; Anda, vende todo lo que tienes, y dalo a los pobres, y tendrás tesoro en el cielo; y ven, sígueme.” Esta fue la misma invitación que le había dado a los Apóstoles. Ellos habían dejado todo, y lo habían seguido. Este joven tenia la invitación de ser Apóstol # 13. Pero vaciló. Se negó. Colgó su cara, y se fue triste, porque tenia grandes posesiones.

Shakespeare once said: “There are times in the affairs of men, which, taken at the tide, lead on to glory; rejected, lead to a life of regret.” This was one of those times. Imagine what a great man he would have been. The whole world would have known him as a hero, a leader in the things of God, an Apostle. Instead, We do not even know his name. We do know he went away sad.

Shakespeare una vez dijo: “Hay tiempos en los asuntos de los hombres, que, tomados al creciente, llevan a la gloria; rechazados, llevan a una vida de pesar.” Este fue uno de esos momentos. Imagínense que gran hombre podía haber sido. Todo el mundo lo hubiera conocido como un héroe, un gran personaje en las cosas de Dios, un Apóstol. En vez de eso, ni siquiera sabemos su nombre. Lo que sí sabemos es que se fue triste.

It is good to notice the things that make us sad, and the things that make us joyful. St. Ignatius Loyola worked on awareness. He noticed that when he read books of chivalry, he felt sad, downcast. But when he read the Lives of the Saints, and the Life of Christ, he felt joyful. Eventually he wrote his rules for the Discernment of Spirits. “It is characteristic of the evil spirit to harass with anxiety, to afflict with sadness, to raise obstacles backed by fallacious reasoning that disturb the soul. Thus he seeks to keep the soul from advancing.”

Es bueno notar lo que nos hace tristes, y lo que nos hace gozosos. Es lo que hizo San Ignacio de Loyola. Noto que cuando leía libros de caballería, quedaba triste, deprimido. Pero cuando leía las Vidas de los Santos, y la Vida de Cristo, se sentía lleno de gozo. Con el tiempo escribió sus Reglas de Discernimiento de Espiritos. “Es característico del los espiritos malos morder, tristar, y poner impedimentos, inquietando con falsas razones, para que el alma no pase adelante.”

“It is characteristic of the good spirit, however, to give courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations and grace. This he does by making all easy, by removing all obstacles so that the soul goes forward in doing good.”

“Es característico del buen espirito dar valor, y fortaleza, consolaciones, lagrimas, inspiraciones y gracia. Esto lo hace haciéndolo todo fácil, removiendo todos los obstáculos para que el alma siga adelante haciendo el bien.”

Jesus looks upon you with love, just as he did with the rich young man. And he also challenges you to go from where you are, to something better. It is easy to hang on to things overmuch. It is easy to stay in our comfort zone. But we have to be alert, so that we do not loose our freedom to follow Jesus. Jesus came to set us free. There is no greater joy than to follow Jesus!

Jesús te ve con amor, así como lo hizo con aquel joven rico. Y también te da el reto: que salgas de donde estas a algo mejor. Es fácil apegarse demasiado a ciertas cosas. Es fácil quedarse donde uno esta confortable. Pero hay que estar alertas, para que no piérdanos la libertad para poder seguir a Jesús. Jesús vino para hacernos libres. ¡No hay gozo más grande que seguir a Jesús!

Jesus added: “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” (Mark 10:23-24). The disciples were amazed, so Jesus repeated it. Jesus said: “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When they were exceedingly astonished they said among themselves: “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said: “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.”

Jesús añadió: “¡Cuán difícilmente entraran en el reino de Dios los que tienen riquezas!” (Marcos 10:23-24). Los discípulos se asombraron, y Jesús lo repitió. Luego Jesús dijo: “Es más fácil para que un camello pase por el ojo de una aguja, que entrar un rico en el reino de Dios.” Cuando los Apóstoles estaban aun más asombrados, discutían entre si: “¿Quién, pues, podrá ser salvo?” Jesús, mirándolos, dijo: “Para los hombres es imposible, mas para Dios, no; porque todas las cosas son posibles para Dios.”

When Peter reminded the Lord that they had given up everything and followed him. Jesus said: “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers, or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.”

Cuando Pedro le recordó al Señor que ellos habían dejado todo para seguirlo, Jesús dijo: “De cierto os digo que no hay ninguno que haya dejado casa, o hermanos, o hermanas, o padre, o madre, o mujer, o hijos, o tierras, por causa de mi y del evangelio, que no reciba cien veces mas ahora en este tiempo; casa, hermanos, hermanas, madres, hijos, y tierras, con persecuciones; y en el la época que ha de venir, la vida eterna.”

Clement of Alexandria (Salvation of the Rich Man 22) interprets this in the spiritual sense. “God does not arbitrarily require us literally to hate or abandon those dearest to us. But if we are to love our enemies, it must be in accordance to right reason, that, by analogy we should also love our nearest relatives…. But insofar as one’s father, or son, or brother, becomes for you a hindrance to faith or an impediment to godly life, one should not then work in concert with that temptation. Attend to the spiritual, rather than the fleshly, is the meaning of the command.”

Clemente de Alejandría (Salvación del Hombre Rico 22) interpreta esto en el sentido espiritual. “Dios no nos requiere arbitrariamente literalmente odiar o abandonar a los seres mas queridos nuestros. Pero si hemos de amar a nuestros enemigos, debe ser de acuerdo con razón apropiada. Por analogía, hay que amar a nuestros parientes mas cercanos... Pero tanto cuanto nuestro padre, o hijo, o hermano, es un impedimento a la fe o un impedimento a una vida con Dios, uno no debe actuar de acuerdo con esa tentación. Atiende a lo espiritual, mas bien que a la carne, es lo que quiere decir este mandato.”

Clement also has this to say about the rich. “The Savior by no means has excluded the rich on account of wealth itself, and the possession of property, nor fenced off salvation against them, if they are able and willing to submit their life to God’s commandments, and prefer them to transitory things.

Clemente también tiene esto que decir de los ricos. “El Salvador de ninguna manera ha excluido a los ricos por razón de sus riquezas en sí mismo y la posesión de propiedades. No les pone un cerco contra ellos para la salvación, si pueden y quieren someter sus vidas a los Mandamientos de Dios, y lo prefieren a Él a cosas transitorias.

Let them look to the Lord with steady eye, as those who look toward the slightest nod of a good helmsman, what he wishes, what he orders, what he indicates, what signal he gives his mariners, where and when he directs the ship’s course. This means we exercise self-control, and seek God alone, and breath God, and walk with God. Such a man submits to the commandments, being free, unsubdued, and free of disease, unwounded by wealth.”

Que vean al Señor con ojo fijo, así como los que ven a cualquier seña con la cabeza más menor de un buen timonero, donde y cuando él dirija al curso del barco. Esto quiere decir control de si mismo, y buscar solamente a Dios, y respirar Dios, y andar con Dios. Tal hombre se somete a los mandamientos, siendo libre, no sometido a las riquezas, libre de la enfermedad, no herido por las riquezas.

Caesarius of Arles says: “Rich and poor, listen to Christ: I am speaking to God’s people. Most of you are poor, but you too must listen carefully to understand. And you had best listen even more intently if you glory in your poverty. Beware of pride, lest the humble rich surpass you. Beware of wickedness, lest the pious rich confound you. Beware of drunkenness, lest the sober excel you” (Sermons 153.2).

Cesario de Aries dice: “Ricos y pobres, escuchen a Cristo: Estoy hablando al pueblo de Dios. La mayoría de Ustedes son pobres, pero Ustedes también deben oír cuidadosamente para entender. Y es mejor que oigas mas atentamente si te glorias en tu pobreza. Cuidado con el orgullo, no vaya a ser que el humilde rico te sobrepase. Cuidado con la maldades, no sea que los ricos piadosos te confundan. Cuidado con la borrachera, no sea que los sobrios te sobresalgan” (Sermones 153.2).

Clement of Alexandria (op.cit.) also observes that God provides a fairer wind for more willing souls. But if they only abandon their eagerness, the wind that God provides is thereby obstructed. For to save the unwilling is an act of compulsion. But to save the willing is an act of grace.

Clemente de Alejandría (Op. Cit.) también observa que Dios provee un viento más bello a la alma que más voluntad tenga. Pero si ella solo abandona su ardor, el viento que Dios provee se estorba. Porque salvar a los que no quieren es un acto de compulsión. Pero salvar a los que si quieren es un acto de gracia.

St. Augustine (Letters, 157, To Hilarius) notes that the Apostles were the first to follow in the practice of this complete self-giving. One who gives up both what one owns and what one desires to own, gives up the whole world. The value of their response does not depend on how much they give up. Nor does the quantity determine the worthiness. One who having nothing gives up little is not less worthy than one who having much gives up all.

San Agustín (Cartas, 157, A Hilario) nota que los Apóstoles fueron los primeros para seguir la practica de entrega total. Uno que rinde tanto como lo que pertenece a él y lo que desea tener, da todo el mundo. El valor de su responso no depende de cuanto ellos rinden. Ni la cantidad determina la dignidad. Uno que teniendo nada da poco, no es menos digno que uno que teniendo mucho da todo.

In these days of recession, everyone is aware of the importance of a good national economy. Studies show the poor are getting hit harder than the middle class or the wealthy. The early Christians gave according to their means, to each according to his needs (Acts 2:45). The Catholic Church teachings on social justice speak about the need for a more equitable distribution of wealth.

En estos días de recesion, todo mundo se da cuenta que importante es tener una economía nacional buena. Estudios indican que los pobres han sufrido mas que los de media clase y que los ricos. Los Cristianos tempranos (Hechos 2:45) daban según lo que podían, a los que necesitaban según su necesidad. La Iglesia Católica en sus enseñanzas acerca la justicia social habla de la necesidad de tener mas igualdad en la distribución de los bienes.
