The Pontifical Collection for the Benefit of the Holy Places is on Good Friday, March 30, at all parishes! Today, as we know, living the Christian faith in the Middle East is not at all easy. Our parishes are called once a year on Good Friday to support Christians in the Holy Land. Please give generously as many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. “Let us work for the good of all” (Galatians 6:10). http://www.commissariat.ca/

Stewardship Reflections

“I will be their God and they shall be my people.”

- Jeremiah 31:33

What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our

neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.

Palm Sunday

We have now come to the most sacred week of all time – Holy Week. You will notice the covering of

the cross and statues – why do we do this? This custom goes back over a 1500 years.

On the eve of Passion Sunday, the crucifixes, statues, and pictures in the churches are draped in purple

cloth as a sign of mourning. This custom originated in Rome, where in ancient times, the images of the papal

chapel in the Vatican used to be shrouded when the deacon sang the concluding words of the Sunday Gospel,

“Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple” (John 8: 59). The liturgical services of Passiontide are based on

what happened to our Lord during the last days before His death, leading up to the mysteries of the Passion.

(Mystery, in this connection, is the religious term for any episode of Christ’s life related in the Gospels.) The

Mass texts are dominated by the thought of the Just One, persecuted by His enemies, as He approaches the

supreme sacrifice on Golgotha. The Church, by the way of the purple, also expresses her shame as we put our

savior through his passion and death. This is a time for reflection on the love of God, the love of Jesus for each

one of us. He is our model; we owe him gratitude! Let the “purple” be a teaching for you … let it lead you to

reflect on the passion and death of Jesus and how you need to repent and believe in the Gospel

It begins today with Palm Sunday – Jesus weeps over the city and then rides into it. He weeps because

he knows the city is, in so many ways, sunk in sin and stubbornly refuses all the graces that he is offering. It

will suffer horribly for this. He doesn’t walk away though, but rides into the city on the donkey… knowing full

well what is going to happen.

On Holy Thursday Jesus, will institute 2 magnificent sacraments; the Mass (the Holy Eucharist), and the

Priesthood wherein the Eucharist will become present to us. The Mass starts at 7:00pm followed by the

Transference of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose till 11:00pm. This commemorates Jesus’s journey

to the Mount of Olives wherein he allows himself to be captured. There will be confessions during this time

On Good Friday we pray the Stations of the Cross at 11:00am followed by the beginning of the Divine

Mercy Novena. This is a beautiful devotion and one that every Catholic should cultivate and pray periodically.

Jesus walked the real one; Jesus only asks us to meditate on his Walk and to incorporate it into our own lives …

to help us be faithful to him and our Catholic life. Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion and Death begins at

3:00pm. There is no Mass anywhere in the Church on this day. It is a mandatory day of fast and abstinence

for all Catholics. Remember this – write a note on your fridge.

On Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil begins this year at 8:00pm. We have 15 adults being baptized into

the Catholic Church. This is THE liturgy of the year. I strongly encourage you to attend the Vigil … especially

if you have not done so before. It is divided into 4 parts: Liturgy of Light, of Word, of Baptism and of

Eucharist. If you do attend Mass this night, it satisfies for the Sunday obligation (meaning you do not have to

return on Sunday).

This is the most sacred time of the liturgical year. Prepare yourself and get ready to accompany Jesus, as

he offers himself for you.

Fr. Hamilton!

In the first century, the early Christians celebrated every Sunday in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus. By the second century, they established a particular day for the celebration of the resurrection, which was connected to the Jewish Passover.

Their observance began at sun down on Saturday evening. They called it the Night of the Great Vigil, a time of remembrance and expectation that lasted throughout the night so they could sing “alleluia” at dawn on Easter morning. It was during the Night of the Great Vigil that new Christians were received into the Church.

By the fourth century, it became customary for

people to make pilgrimages to Jerusalem to celebrate what was called the “Great Week,” which included Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. The diary of a woman named Egeria in 381 contains the first accounts of the special rites, prayers and devotions that took place in Jerusalem during the Great Week.

Over time, the practice of observing Holy Week spread throughout the Christian world, with prayers, historical re-enactments and special liturgies. During the Middle Ages, the celebration of the Easter Vigil gradually fell out of practice. The important days of the week were Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

In 1955, the Vatican re-established the Easter Vigil as an important part of Holy Week observances.

During the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), the bishop called for the restoration of the early Christian rituals for receiving new Christians into the Church at the Easter Vigil. In 1988, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults was issued.

Today, Easter Vigil with the Easter fire, the lighting of the paschal candle, the reading of salvation history, the celebration of the sacraments of initiation for catechumens and renewal of baptismal promises for the faithful is once again an integral part of Holy Week celebrations.

Taking time to meditate on the seven last words of Jesus is a traditional devotion during Holy Week. Here are the last words spoken by Jesus with their Scripture citations. You might want to read the passages from your Bible and then ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what meaning these words have in your life today:

The Seven Last Words of Jesus

Holy Week CustomsPalm Crosses From medieval times, people have believed that blessed palms formed into the shape of a cross would protect them from danger. The easiest way to make a cross from blessed palms is to cut two pieces of the palm, arrange in the shape of a cross, put a thumbtack in the middle, and attach the cross to a doorway or a bulletin board. Check the Internet for directions on how to braid or weave palms into more decorative crosses.

Housecleaning In many cultures the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week are designated as days for vigorous housecleaning in preparation for Easter. This custom probably evolved from the Jewish custom of ritual cleaning before Passover.

Colouring Eggs Decorating eggs was a pagan symbol of rebirth at springtime for the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Persians and even the Chinese. Christians adopted the coloured egg as a symbol of new life which comes with the Resurrection.

Blessing of Easter Baskets In many cultures, families bring food that will be eaten on Easter Sunday to church in a basket for a special blessing on Holy Saturday.

Visiting Churches The custom of visiting several churches to say a prayer on Holy Thursday was a tradition that evolved from the practice of making pilgrimages to holy places.

Easter Lilies The tradition of buying Easter lilies during Holy Week for use as decorations in homes and churches came into practice in the 1800s. The white flower is a symbol of purity and new life that heralds the resurrection of Jesus.

Sweet Breads In many cultures, Holy Week was traditionally a time for baking sweet breads, cakes and pastries that would be served on Easter Sunday.

New Clothes From the time of the early Christians, the newly baptized wore white garments made from new linen. In medieval times, it became a tradition for people to wear new clothes on Easter Sunday, symbolizing the “new life” that comes with the Resurrection. In some places it was believed that bad luck would come to those who could afford new Easter clothes but refused to buy them.

Holy Water Blessing Some families bring holy water containers to Mass on Easter so they can bring home some Easter water, which is blessed during the Easter Vigil, to bless their homes.

During Holy Week bishops bless sacred oils in the diocesan cathedral at a special liturgy known as the Chrism Mass.

The oil of chrism is used during baptisms, confirmation, ordination and the consecration of altars. The oil of catechumens is used at the Easter Vigil. The oil of the sick is used to anoint people during the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

The oils are then distributed to the parishes for sacramental celebrations throughout the year.

As part of the liturgical reforms of Vatican II, the renewal of priestly promises was incorporated into the Chrism Mass.

The Chrism Mass is an ancient celebration that traditionally takes place on Holy Thursday morning. But in recent years, many dioceses celebrate the Chrism Mass on an evening earlier in Holy Week so that more people can attend.

The word “Triduum” comes from the Latin word three most sacred days in the Church year. It begins at sundown on Holy Thursday, reaches a high point at the Easter Vigil, and concludes with evening prayer at sundown on Easter Sunday.

The liturgical celebrations during the Triduum on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday are rich with symbolism and flow from one to another in a seamless way. While it may appear as if these liturgies are separate and distinct, they are actually intended to be one continuous celebration that commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.

For this reason, Catholics are encouraged to observe the entire Triduum by attending all of the liturgies.
