At the end of all programs,

we had a farewell party for

friends who was going to

leave Busan. Good bye and

Take care, friends! We are

proud of the moment we were

together as MANNAM family.

Though families were far

away from here, Korea, we

hope it was great time with

another family with MANNAM !

On the 10th, February, there

was an event, ‘설날 (Seol-Nal)

with MANNAM.’ About 60 peo-

ple came and enjoyed the

holidays with MANNAM family.

‘설날 with MANNAM’ was not

the first time. The event was

on 21st, January in 2012 at

the beginning of Busan branch.

Last year, we focused on only

Korean culture, but this year,

we tried to introduce other

countries and enjoy all to-

gether! So, preparing the pro-

gram and dishes, the new

menu, 월남쌈 (Vietnamese

Wrap) was added to introduce

another food culture as well as

consider there were many

vegetarian friends.

Ahead of the event, we re-

ceived many words for names

in Korean language through

MANNAM Korean classes and

Korean staffs. Then friends

chose one name card on

which the name and its mean-

ing was written at the door.

Each group had a joyful dinner

time with Vietanmese Wrap

and Tteok-Guk (a soup with

sliced rice cake.)

After the dinner, we did

charades (guess the answer

seeing the gestures/body lan-

guages), dividing into groups.

Then, we learned how to do

세배 (Sae-Bae, New Year’s

bow.) You can see detailed

steps how to bow properly on

the New Year’s day on Aislin’s

Seol-Nal with MANNAM

Let’s Enjoy a Bowl of Tteokguk! Tteokguk is a Korean

traditional food eaten during

Lunar New Year’s day. It is

made with 가래떡 (Ga-rae-

tteok.) Koreans think that

people grow one year older by

eating Tteokguk.

Garaetteok is a long and

white rice cake, which means

longevity. Also, the color of

white is a symbol of a new

beginning as well as purity

and brightness. The shape of

sliced Garaetteok looks like

coins. So Koreans welcome a

new year and hope longevity

and wealth having a bowl of

Tteokguk.

If you want to make

Volunteering: Make the World More Beautiful to Live Together

The 2nd <더 PEACE> talk concert: Equality and Discrimination

concert was Rodrigo Braune, a

Brazilian friend in MANNAM

International Busan North

branch gave us speech with

the theme 'Equality and

Discrimination.'

In part 2, people was divided

into a few of groups, then we

shared our experience of

discrimination and made the

pledge to end discrimination.

There were variety people and

variety stories. Discussion was

going on in the group, then

one of the members

announced their experiences

and pledge. Among them,

many friends, who are not

Koreans, experienced

discrimination as foreigners in

Korea. When they getting on

the subway, for example,

Koreans avoid to sit beside

them. Even more severe case

is that boss whom friends work

with does not call their name

just say ‘야! (‘ya.’)

However, beyond finding

problem, we started to discuss

to overcome and end

discrimination around us.

Preparing the 3rd peace talk,

we need more speaker and

fresh ideas! If you want to be a

presenter or give advice for us,

please do contact us!

How do you think of

volunteering? Volunteering is

usually considered as sacrifice

for others, not wishing any

financial gain. Of course, we

can gain a feeling of self-worth

or self-respect. However, it is

still more influential to others.

Not only people in need who

are served by volunteers but

also third party who just see

and hear the good activities. A

study at Harvard found that

there was a significant rise in

the level of Immunoglobin A

(protective antibody) when

subjects watched the

biographic film of Mother

Theresa.

Therefore, what we are

Share your heart

to Make the World

More Beautiful!

MANNAM is a volunteer organization whose goal is succinctly defined in our motto, our rallying cry, our

call to arms: When Light Meets Light there is Victory. Our mission is to bring all people of different

nationalities, creeds and cultures together through volunteering and to learn and understand about each other:

when good things come together, the result will be even greater – world peace. Korea has long been known

as the country of courteous people in the East and the 'land that does not forget kindness'. Our aim is to

spread our vision and the goodness in this culture across borders. We want to bring the light of love across

the globe and from this will come cries of "Victory!"
