Philanthropy Delegates will be participating in an active philanthropy event benefiting the Little Steps Applied Behavioral Analysis Early Intervention Program. Little Steps provides individualized, high quality learning opportunities for children with developmental disabilities. Delegates will be creating puzzles to donate to the program. These puzzles will help the children in developing their cognitive and motor skills. Active Philanthropy will be held in Wescoe Hall, room 3139, in 2 shifts as follows:

Spirit

Puzzle Points Puzzle points, the MACURH 2014 term for spirit points, will be awarded to those delegations showing spirit and enthusiasm. Puzzle points will be updated on the MACURH 2014 website until the beginning of the conference weekend. Silent Cheer Zones In order to encourage excitement and passion for MACURH at all times, MACURH 2014 is converting “No Cheer Zones” into “Silent Cheer Zones” where delegates are encouraged to cheer silently using hand motions. Making the Puzzle Throughout the conference, puzzle pieces will be hidden throughout campus. Delegates can find these and turn them in for 15 puzzle points! Each piece will be colored in a certain way, and in the end they will make a design such as the MACURH 2014 logo. Photo Scavenger Hunt If a delegation takes and submits a picture together in front of certain locations across campus, they will earn puzzle points! 15 puzzle points will be given to any delegation that completes the photo scavenger hunt! Clues will be given out to these 10 locations at check-‐in and can also be found on the Guidebook beginning on Friday.

Myth Busting the Conference Bid: How to Host Presented by Emily Braught, Jimmy Hicks, Joshua Abdo & Megan Jimmerson, No Frills 2015 Conference Staff, Kansas Union, Parlor B Join the No Frills Conference Staff as they debunk worries and concerns about conference hosting. Once the myth's been busted, you'll know how you could be the next to host a conference for the region. This program aims to alleviate concerns about bidding, give some helpful tips, and provide plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Pillar Promotion Presented by Kyle Wilson, Regional Board of Directors, Kansas Union, Parlor C Has your NRHH Chapter struggled to program around all 4 pillars of NRHH? Do you want to learn how to better uphold the 4 Pillars of NRHH in your chapter? Then this is the program for you! Come participate in a discussion about all 4 pillars of NRHH: Service, Scholastics, Recognition, and Leadership. You will learn what these pillars mean, and how to effectively program around all four pillars! Plus we will all share ideas about programming from our own institutions.

Piecing Your Life Together Presented by James Geiger of Northwest Missouri State University, Community Building & Academic Achievement, Wescoe 4035 Do you know where you want to be in ten years, but don't really have a concrete plan on how to get there? It can often be difficult to translate long-‐term dreams we have for ourselves into short term, action-‐oriented goals for the present. This program will first focus on turning our own dreams into actions. Then, we will discuss how to help others do the same for themselves.

A look into St. Cloud State University's work with students in recovery from alcohol and drugs. We will look at all levels of support including language, programs, organizations, and living learning communities. We will share what our campus has done and how you can bring the support to your campus.

Safe Trick or Treat Presented by Lindsey Fry & Patrick Roscoe of Fort Hays State University, Community Building & PCC, Wescoe 4051 A fun and exciting on campus event that involves the community in which your university is located. Also a great way to get hall involvement going. Even a way to get a friendly hall competition going.

Successful Teamwork: The Psychology of Leadership within Teams Presented by Evan Sakai of Creighton University, Community Building & Leadership, Wescoe 4023 In Residence Hall Government, we are constantly working in team-‐based settings. Teams and groups are the backbone of our organization and act as the foundation for successful programs and powerful legislation. However, what makes for a successful team? What are some desirable leadership qualities? When members of a team conflict with one another, how should the leader respond to it? Through this presentation, you’ll learn about some of the basic psychology that goes into leadership and working effectively in team-‐based settings. Topics will include valuable leadership qualities, different leadership styles, and how to effectively deal with conflict.

Dragging Away the Stereotypes Presented by Miranda Cherry of the University of Nebraska Kearney, Diversity, Wescoe 4002 Dragging Away the Stereotypes is a program sponsored by the Queer Straight Alliance at the University of Nebraska Kearney. It's a night that welcomes people from all walks of life and different cultural background to embrace and enjoy an evening full of fun and empowering entertainment. The programs main focus is to educate individuals about Drag Culture as well as the LGBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, asexual, and ally) community; and to create an impactful, liberating environment.

You’re a Tribute! How to Survive?: Piecing together the Mentor-‐Tribute Relationship Presented by Tyler Conlon & Matthew Goff of Minnesota State University Mankato, Leadership & Advisor, Wescoe 4012 You've been selected to represent your District (a.k.a your residence hall student body)! Congratulations! Now what? Just like Katniss Everdeen and Haymitch Abernathy, the advisor-‐advisee relationship takes intentional effort to insure success. From communication to one-‐on-‐one meetings to expectations of each other, we'll train hard to overcome whatever obstacles the Hunger Games can throw at us. Come learn strategies for ensuring survival as an RHA or NRHH Tribute (Executive) and Hunger Games Mentor (Advisor)! To maximize the effectiveness of this program we encourage that both advisor and advisees from the same school attend, but it is not required.

Coaching Leadership Presented by DeVynarae Meeder of the University of North Dakota, Leadership, Wescoe 4076 Looking how to be a leader of a large group? Coaching leadership is a different way to lead a large group and bring the people together as a team. This program looks at three main parts of coaching a team that applies to leading that will benefit the entire group. Coaching leadership will not only show you how to be a great leader of a large group but to coach others to become great leaders.

Nacho Normal Organization Presented by Dawn Emmons of Webster University, PCC, Wescoe 4040 Nacho Normal Organization is about starting and ending your year off with a twist. This is all about starting your year by getting people in the door, interested in what your RHA provides and of course the favorite for any college student...food.

Let’s go to the Beach, each. Let’s go get away Presented by Charlee Samuelson & A.J. Ladner of Fort Hays State University, PCC, Wescoe 4071 Who likes to have fun over spring break? Everybody does, right?! Have you ever wanted to host a program that shows students how to have fun and be safe at the same time? Then this program is for you! We'll talk about things such as sun safety, alcohol awareness, self-‐defense tips, tattoo and piercing safety, and sex safety. We'll also be doing a few of the activities we had at our event!

ART: Motivation Presented by Ryan McFadden, Advisor, Wescoe 1007 This session will help advisors understand and dialogue on how to keep all levels of their student leaders motivated throughout their terms. These sessions will also spotlight recognition tools as a way to motivate and provide positive feedback to students.

Advising Across KU’s Campus Presented by KU Faculty & Staff, Advisor, Wescoe 1045 Select advisors from across KU’s campus will provide tips and strategies that have made them successful in their careers as advisors. In this session they will present topics relevant to advising and different ways to advise a diverse student body.


Harry Potter Weekend Presented by Kat Robotham of the University of North Dakota, Community Building, Wescoe 4071 Everyone loves Harry Potter! However, most of us have not received our letter to Hogwarts. In this presentation, you will learn about a fun way to create your own Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on your own campus. Individuals who attend this program will engage in activities to cope with their own stress, as well as learn ways to bring a large-‐scale stress reduction program to their own campus.

Do you want to learn how certain types of media affect society? We will watch various media clips and discuss how these social stigmas make a difference in our various communities.

The Science of Personal Leadership Presented by Cody Dessellier & Shane Herman of the University of North Dakota, Leadership, Wescoe 4025 Leadership development is a never-‐ending process that can be quite daunting. By applying the Scientific Method to our leadership, we can gain a better understanding of what we are doing and what is going wrong. Through this program, we will discover our personal leadership styles and how to apply them to groups, as well as new methods to analyze Hall and RA programs.

Reading Body Language Presented by Tyler Bluml of the University of North Dakota, Leadership, Wescoe 4012 Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and became confused by their body language? In this presentation, you will learn a lot about body language (both verbal and nonverbal), as well as ways in which to improve your own body language. Come learn about the biggest part of conversation: the body!

Training the Superhero within you: Hero Training Presented by Megan Jimmerson & Josh Danker of the University of Iowa, Leadership & PCC, Wescoe 4051 Students can come to learn how to effectively implement RHA training programs on their campus. HERO (Hall Executive Resident Officer) Training is a weekend long training retreat hosted by the University of Iowa to train incoming RHA members for their positional requirements throughout the school year. RHA training is a crucial piece of the campus puzzle in developing and improving the experiences of students living within the residence halls. HERO Training has proven to be a fun and successful way to get to know the new RHA members, while also developing their leadership skills and training them for their positions.

Wellness Week Presented by Emily Starr of the University of Iowa, PCC, Wescoe 4043 Wellness Week encompasses seven days of programming with approximately 30 different programs. Learn to embrace social, physical, intellectual, emotional, financial, environmental, and spiritual wellness through the five types of programming in your residence halls!

Recently we discovered problems within our own constitution and under-‐went a major process of revising and restructuring to make our constitution an accurate reflection of our organization and our responsibilities to our community. We know this process can be tedious, overwhelming and easily postponed because your constitution "Is fine for now", but we would like to show you the little steps you can take to transform your constitution into a living document.

This program involves gathering ideas from the residents, breaking these ideas up into groups, conducting research, presenting these ideas to the professional staff of Housing and Residential Life, having the professional staff return with a reply, and then following up on these projects if needed. This session will give you step by step instructions and tips in order to make this a successful program at your institution.

Blow Your Stress Away Presented by Dawn Emmons & Kim Meyer of Webster University, PCC, Wescoe 4067 Getting stressed with all the homework? Need to just take a break and relax? If so come to this event where you will learn some relaxing techniques through food, games, activities and even a craft.

Halloween in the Halls Presented by T-‐Asia Mays & Donna Gladden of Missouri State University, Community Building, Wescoe 4001 This program is based on allowing university staff to bring their children into the resident halls and treat or trick one to two days before actually Halloween. In this program you can participate in three main ways, 1. by volunteering your room to give out candy in your resident hall for the children, 2. being a "pumpkin pal" which is a set of people that are responsible for taking the children all around campus and to the doors for candy, and last but not least you can make a game stand or activity for the kids to play before they go our their tours such as... pin the stem on the pumpkin, or face painting.

What’s in Your Shoebox? Presented by Jonathan Onnen & Jessica Petrik of St. Cloud State University, Community Building, Wescoe 4051 Come find out what could be hidden in someone else's shoe-‐box!Everyone has a different parts of them that they let be known to others. More often than not, there are stories we do not know or something about a person we may know very well that we might not know either. Come to our program to get an understanding of what people may be carrying around with them in their shoebox.

A Few Minutes, Everyone Wins It Presented by Jamal White of the University of Northern Iowa, Community Building & PCC, Wescoe 4012 Activeness, competitiveness, social interaction, and even some brain work all in one. Residence within the hall will partner up with 1 or 2 people that they do not already know and compete against fellow residence teams to complete varying challenges and tasks on each hall floor consisting of physical, mental, and food involving activities.

We will be incorporating diversity into this fun filled program. Global Interactions Presented by Andrew Rosenbaum & Renee Hanson of the University of North Dakota, Diversity, Wescoe 4067 Global Interactions is a program that helps to create an open forum for American and International students to learn about other cultures, customs, and languages outside of the classroom. It helps to teach the customs and culture of other countries from a first hand perspective. The program helps international students to learn from us to develop a better understanding of American Culture. This program can break down social barriers, create long lasting international friendships, and create networking for Americans. Through Global Interactions we are able to get a better understanding of the world and nurture the celebration of global diversity.

Putting the Puzzle together for your Top 1%: Planning and Executing NRHH Points System and Curriculum Presented by Benjamin Billesbach & Melissa Peters of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Leadership & Advisor, Wescoe 4071 The Scarlet and Cream Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary at the University of Nebraska-‐Lincoln uses a calendar curriculum to be intentional about meeting topics, including service opportunities, recognition opportunities, leadership development, and academic support. Through the calendar, our chapter is intentional about ensuring we are covering each pillar throughout the month. In the program, we will talk about the intentionality of each pillar as well as why we selected what we did for each month and the pillar. Also, learn about the point system our chapter is using to encourage active membership through the four pillars to earn points towards chapter apparel, graduation cords, etc.

This program unites students from all areas of campus to work for the good of others while building pride and school community. A long-‐standing tradition at Creighton University, this program serves as a chance for all students to come together and represent their school to the community while performing service.

All You Really Needed to know about Politics You Learned in Kindergarten Presented by Dane Schreiber of the University of St. Thomas, Community Building, Wescoe 4076 Workplace politics can be tricky to navigate but sometimes the best ways to deal with them is with a very simple set of rules. Come to this session based on the book "All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum to learn how the rules we learned in Kindergarten still apply today.

72-‐Hour Lockdown Presented by Dustin Johnson & Jenn Schlepp from St. Cloud University, Diversity, Wescoe 4008 This educational presentation will bring you through the journey of mental illness and disorder. We will be talking about the vast variety of mental disorders, the stigmas around them, and resources for everyone.

Come create a masterpiece with us as we dive into each others backgrounds, look into some of the diverse populations at each university and figure out how to successfully program for and work with each individual on your campus! Journey with us as we walk in each others shoes, get over the awkward, and overcome stereotypes, all while learning to "Paint with ALL the Colors of the Wind!"

Wall Words Presented by Kelsey Bergman of the University of Northern Iowa, Community Building, Diversity & Leadership, Wescoe 4023 Wall words is an interactive program that gets people to think about the world around them, learn about others, and themselves. There will be words in different categories hung up around the room. From there the group will be split into smaller groups and given time to look at the words. Then they will have time to discuss the words and their views on the categories with others in their group. This activity is to promote knowledge of others, the world around them, as well as good communication skills. This program can also be quickly and easily tailored to the number of people that arrive to the program.

Crisis Crunch Time Challenged Presented by Kody Henke of Iowa State University, Community Building & Leadership, Wescoe 4020 As student leaders, we all know there can be times when the expected becomes reality, forcing us to shift roles and take action. Come and experience the Crisis Crunch Time Challenge, a fast-‐paced, interactive program focused on multi-‐tasking in a hectic environment. This program involves relying on a team when the times get tough and utilizing diverse leadership styles to accomplish a common goal. Put your leadership to the test and see if you can withstand the elements of the Crisis Crunch Time Challenge.

Building RHA Better, Together Presented by Jacob Joseph & Jadean Hoff of St. Louis University, Community Building, Leadership, PCC & Advisor, Wescoe 4002 At previous conferences, we have encountered differences in structure within RHAs of different campuses. Here we will present what our structure is like and discuss the advantages that come with it. Our structure focuses on retention of hall council members through increased participation and cooperation with the Executive Board.

Do You Pass the Stress Test? Presented by Claire Nichols & Meghan Busswitz of the University of Northern Iowa, Leadership & Academic Achievement, Wescoe 4035 Many people know they are stressed but they may not know the full effects of stress on their body and mind! This program will test your knowledge of stress and describe in detail the 4 different ways stress can affect your body. There will be a section that examines how many physical symptoms you experience when you’re stressed and also demonstrations to show how to treat stress headaches and other common stress-‐related symptoms the healthy way. There will also be a section dedicated to stress-‐prevention and reduction. All types of students and people suffer from stress, so everyone should find out if they pass the Stress Test!

It is my esteemed pleasure to welcome you to MACURH 2014: Piecing Together the Bigger Picture here at The University of Kansas! The conference staff has been hard at work for over the past year to build a wonderful conference experience for you this weekend. They have put forth a tremendous effort to ensure an amazing stay here in the beautiful city of Lawrence.

As you start off this weekend, do me a favor, remove the preconceived notions you had of what a leadership conference is supposed to be, and instead open yourself up to the new and wonderful experiences all around you. Take a deep breath and let go of the stress of a typical school week and revel in the atmosphere of the conference while being surrounded by almost 329 other delegates excited to be here with you. On behalf of the MACURH Regional Board of Directors, I encourage you to reach out to those around. You have before you a unique opportunity to meet with and learn from individuals that are just as passionate about making their residential communities better places as you are. Please, take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of this weekend.

MACURH has a long and rich history of student leaders. Our region is filled with fantastic individuals all who have their own story to tell and their own piece to add the picture. Over this weekend I hope that you take the initiative to meet some of these other incredible leaders. The people you meet at this conference can not only serve as great resources and networking tools, but can also become great friends. Furthermore, I challenge everyone to find something at this conference that you can take home to your institution. It can be anything from a new awesome program, an idea for a new policy or initiative that you would like to see, a cheer, or even the insane amount of MACURH spirit. By taking something back from this conference, you will be able to share it with those who are not able to attend the and thus you help keep the MACURH spirit with you throughout the year.

Also, please remember that what you get out of this conference is directly proportional to what you put into it. The more energy and passion you put in, the more spirit you will get back. By challenging yourself, stepping outside of your comfort zone, recognizing these around you and actively participating in the programming and events, you will be able to fully gain the most out of this conference. MACURH is what you make of it. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and I promise you will not be disappointed.

I, along with the rest of my executive staff and General Assembly of the National Residence Hall Honorary, want to express our sincerest delight in having the privilege of hosting MACURH 2014 at the University of Kansas. Being a piece of the puzzle, along with RHA, that represents KU Student Housing, not only is NRHH excited to showcase our campus to the rest of the region, but we are also thrilled to bring student leaders together from across MACURH.

The four pillars on which the MACURH conference is centered upon—tradition, teamwork, diversity, and leadership—are not only central themes in all that NRHH does, but also in everything that happens at KU. Student leaders from the MACURH region will have the opportunity to grow in these four pillars during the conference, through programs, socials, philanthropy, and many other opportunities. Plus Flat Molly will be there! I am passionate about NRHH. I love everything NRHH related. I am really trying to focus on building on everything NRHH stands for, but also trying to create new initiatives and promote balance between pillars. NRHH means everything to me.

Devin Melton, Associate Director of Finance and Records Host Institution: Southeast Missouri State University Major: Masters in Business Administration I am excited for MACURH 2014 because it will be my fourth and last MACURH before I graduate, so it will be interesting to compare the experience this year with my first. Taylor Hanna, 2014 Regional Conference Chair Host Institution: The University of Kansas Major: Applied Behavioral Sciences I am excited for MACURH 2014 because conferences are the best time to meet people from the region, nation and beyond. I am also excited to show off my campus to the region! My favorite leadership moment was returning from MACURH 2013 with a team of leaders who were ready and determined to host MACURH 2014! It was exciting to go on this journey with this team and to make life long friendships with these incredible leaders.

Expectations

NACURH Alcohol and Drug Policy Alcohol and illicit drugs are nationally recognized as substances that may have a negative effect on the lives of college students. As a leadership organization that works largely with college students under the drinking age, it is recognized that alcohol is not needed for a good time or to promote positive growth. Illicit drugs can be lethal. All MACURH conferences, retreats, and meetings will be designated “alcohol and drug free”. The method of enforcement will be at the discretion of the Conference Staff, in conclusion with the CRC, National Advisor, National Chair, the Regional Advisor and the Regional Director from the region the student represents. Holiday Inn Policies The poolside area in the Holiday Inn will be open for use by delegates until 11pm. Additionally, the conference headquarters located in the boardroom will be open 24/7, however the hotel areas surrounding the headquarters will be closed so please be quiet and courteous in those areas. Checkout The hotel’s official checkout time is 11am. If your delegation needs to stay longer, the hotel can keep your baggage elsewhere. Room keys can either be turned into the front desk or left in the rooms themselves. All rooms will be billed to the University of Kansas MACURH conference so there is no need to look for the individual hotel room bill.
