Competence based approach
in language teaching
“Competence”
or
“Competency”?
Competence: what people can do = knowledge +
skills to attain the goal
Competency: how they do it = behavioral patterns
(competence + commitment)
KEY COMPETENCES FOR LANGUAGE
LEARNING
Value and sense competence
Learners are able to:
- perceive and understand the world- identify their position and mission - choose the goals and make decisions
Critical for the individual’s learning path and the further life itself
General culture competence
Learners are able to identify:
- peculiarities of home and world cultures- spiritual and moral values of a person, specific nations and humanity as a whole- family, community and social events and traditions- science and religion in a person’s life and their impact on the world- everyday life and leisure – efficient ways of time management
Cognitive and learning competence
Learners are able to:
- set goals- plan- analyze- reflect- self-assess- be functionally literate: tell facts from fiction; measure; use a variety of cognitive methods (probabilistic, statistical, etc.)
Information competence
Learners are able to:
- carry independent information search- analyze information- select information- organize information- transform information- save information- share information Critical for working with information in the domain of study as well as in the world itself
Communicative competence

Traditional approach
vs. competence
based approachWhat is the difference?
Traditional approach
Competence based approach
Teaching goals
Acquiring a set of knowledge and skills about the language
Using the language in a meaningful real-life contextStudents are able to…
The main result
“I know what” “I know how”
Learning process
Reproduction Production
Dominant component
Teacher-centered Student’s autonomy and independent work
Control process
Statistics of students’ achievements
Complex assessment of achievements
Traditional approach:
From acquired knowledge and skills to solving a communication problem:
Teaching “What?”lack of, low or no motivation to learn.
Competence based approach:
Solving a real-life problem by means of acquiring and using necessary knowledge and skills:
Teaching “How to…?”high motivation to learn for solving
a real-life problem
Value and sense competence
General culture competence
Cognitive and learning competence
Information competence
Communicative competence
Self-perfection competence
Social competence
The most efficient motivation approach – appealing to a student’s personality and experience:- background- opinions- values and beliefsthrough developing critical thinking skills:- analyzing- comparing- contrasting- supporting / rejecting- reasoning
How can we provide competence-based learning
in a real classroom?
A photo collage to work with at the beginning of each unit
Which of the teaching aims is the most important one in a competence based classroom?
- Educational
- Practical
- Developing
- Upbringing
PRACTICAL AIMSWhat real-life activities will students be able to perform?
EDUCATIONAL AIMSWhat language knowledge and skills will they need for performing those activities?
DEVELOPING AIMSWhat competences and
skills must be developed for performing those
activities?
UPBRINGING AIMSWhat personal
competences and traits must be developed for
performing those activities?
Consider cognitive processes for learning
A FEW RECOMMENDATIONS
We have to challenge learners to think, review and get engaged in complex cognitive processes. Learners construct their own learning from simple to more complex thinking skills.
Mind the 3 steps of a learning unit:
- activate previous knowledge and present content - structure knowledge- apply knowledge
Use practical real-life contexts which are relevant tolearners. Tasks should be seen as challenging andnot only language related.
Set the meaningful context: protecting the environment
Warm up in a meaningful context
WHAT DO WE DO?
Activate previous knowledge
Set up the area for meaningful research
Encourage and develop critical thinking by analysing, comparing, contrasting, exchanging opinions, discussing and reasoning.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Appeal to personal background, values and experienceUse previous knowledgeEncourage critical thinking and interaction
WHAT DO WE DO?
Whenever possible, embed tasks in meaningful global contexts to enhance a holistic vision (from local to global)
Create learning situations that alternate individual, pair, team and whole class work to enhance interaction.
Use real-life samples and teaching materials for promoting learners’ relevant response in a meaningful context.
Appeal to personal background, values and experienceUse previous knowledgeUse cross-cultural approach and real-life statistics or factsEncourage critical thinking and interaction
WHAT DO WE DO?
Encourage setting goals, making decisions and planning further actions
WHAT DO WE DO?
Encourage independent information search, analysis, organizing and sharing
Appeal to personal background, values and experience
Use cross-cultural approach and real-life statistics or facts
Encourage critical thinking and interaction
Foster autonomous learning by giving an active role to the student and encouraging the use of the following learning strategies:
- Have a clear motivation- Immerse yourself- Listen frequently- Learn vocabulary in a smart way- Think in the foreign language- Use software or online resources to build up vocabulary- Dare to make mistakes- Read and write as much as you can in the foreign language- Do short but regular learning sessions
Use assessment not of learning but for learning. Consider self / peer-assessment. Make students reflect on their learning process and mistakes as a way to improve on their learning.
Rethink the teacher’s role in the classroom in the way to be more guiding, facilitating and mentoring.Put the accent on motivating students for learning rather than instructing and controlling them.
