I have just completed the course work for the Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) (Honours) with Swinburne University’s Design Factory (Victoria, Australia). The final honours year involved an international team developing innovative bicycle solutions for intermodal transport, finishing with a presentation as part of Stanford University’s SUGAR network (California USA).

GHISALLOProduct // Urban commuter cycleTopic // Industrial designCompleted // 2015 - 2016Time Scale // 9 Months
The Brief //
Design an environmentally sustainable and inclusive solution that improves the experience of urban soft mobility commuters, namely in what concerns the convenience, comfort, accessibility and safety of their daily home-work travels.
9
Commuting by bicycle is more active, cheaper, and better for the environment than taking a car. What’s stopping so many of us?
Through ethnographic research and user testing, the following barriers were discovered.
• Low fitness level
• Fear of motorists
• Need to store bulky items
• Reluctance to compromise on clothing and style
• Difficulty of taking a full size bike onto a train!
The Ghisallo is designed to motivate urban commuters to start using a sustainable transport method in their daily travels. It is aimed at professionals who value style, convenience and a sense of security.

The Ghisallo cycle is a holistic solution which addresses multiple functional and emotional user needs.
1. Smooth - The seatpost and handlebars are adjustable for a customised ergonomic position which promotes good posture.
2. Storage - Customisable and weatherproof, the front luggage compartment keeps your bags safe.
3. Stylish- The low frame provides easy access, no matter what you wear. Faux leather and timeless colours add an air of elegance.
4. Safe - Two front wheels creates a larger visual presence without affecting maneuverability. Proximity-activated safety lights communicate the vehicle’s presence to other road users.
5. Stable- Three wheels assists balancing, stopping and starting.
6. Swift - With optional pedal assist to 25km/h, you never have to break a sweat.
7. Seamless - The rear half unlocks quickly and swings underneath the frame into a slot. When folded, the cycle rolls around easily. It’s ideal for train trips and grocery shopping.
