Oh dear. I think learning sports is toodifficult , Louis thought to himself. It’smuch easier to play with my toys. I think I’ll go do just  that. —After all, it’s not 

really essential to know how to playsports well. Louis then told his dad thathe was tired of sports and didn’t feel like

practicing anymore.

Louis generally didn’t like to

stick to a task until it was done.In fact, it was very rare thatLouis saw anything through tocompletion. He’d quickly feel

that it took too much time or

effort to complete something,and then he’d become bored.

Sometimes Louis would show aninterest in something that seemedinteresting to him — but as soon ashe tried learning the skill and foundthat it was a bit harder than expected or it

required some work, he would quit. Heespecially would give up easily whensomething required him to practice a lot.

Louis decided that his life would be betterif he simply played with his toys all daylong. He stopped all studies as well.Instead he did whatever he wanted … and

he soon was bored!

Puxa. Acho que aprender esportes é difícil demais, — pensou Luiz. É mais fácil brincar com os meus brinquedos. Acho que vou fazer isso. Afinal, não é essencial sabermos jogar bemesportes. Então, Luiz contou ao paique estava farto dos esportes e que não

queria mais praticar.

Luiz geralmente não gostavade perseverar numa tarefaaté terminar. Na verdade,raramente fazia qualquercoisa até o final. Logo,logo já achava que era

demais o tempo e esforçonecessários para completar

qualquer coisa, então ficavaentediado. Ele às vezes

demonstrava interesse poralguma coisa, mas logo que

tentava aprender e descobria que era

um pouco mais difícil ou trabalhoso doque imaginava, ele desistia. Issoacontecia principalmente quando algorequeria que ele praticasse muito.

Luiz decidiu que sua vida seria melhorse ele simplesmente brincasse comseus brinquedos o dia todo. Ele

também parou de estudar. Passoua fazer só o que queria … e logo, logo

ficou entediado!

Num vilarejo próximo a maioria dos

moradores era trabalhadores rurais.Como os adultos da comunidade nãoeram ricos como os pais de Luiz, elesabia que as crianças não tinhamtantos brinquedos legais quanto ele.Resolveu então caminhar até o vilarejopara ver se encontrava alguém que

quisesse ir até sua casa brincar com elee seus brinquedos.

O primeiro garoto que encontrou sechamava Franz. Ele estava carregandouma pilha de madeira. Eles come-çaram a conversar alegrementeenquanto caminhavam. Luiz estava tão

feliz por ter encontrado um amigo econvidou Franz para brincar de―cavaleiros‖ naquela tarde.

In a nearby village lived mostly

farmers. Because the adults in thecommunity weren’t rich like his

parents, Louis knew that theirchildren wouldn’t have as many

nice toys as he had. So he decidedto walk to the village to see if any of the children would like to come to

his house to play with him and histoys.

He first met a boy named Franz,who was carrying a pile of wood.Soon they were chatting happily asthey walked along together. Louiswas so happy to have found a friend

and asked Franz if he wanted toplay knights with him thatafternoon.

 — Tenho um castelo de brinquedoe um monte de cavaleiros e outrosacessórios. Vai ser muito legalbrincarmos juntos — disse.

Franz explicou que ele não ia poderbrincar com ele naquele momento,pois estava levando madeira para aoficina do pai, que lhe ensinavacarpintaria.

 — Isso não é muito trabalho? — 

Luiz perguntou impressionado.

 — É sim, —  respondeu Franz. — Mas é divertidoaprendernovas coisas.Além disso, logovou ser um bom

carpinteirocomo o meupai. O quevocê estáaprendendo?

Luiz olhoupara o chãoEnvergonhadoe não dissenada.Despediu-sede Franz e foiprocurar outrascrianças de sua

idad

―I have a toy

castle withmany knightsandaccessories. It

would be veryfun toplay withthemtogether,‖saidLouis.

Franz explained hat he wasn’t able

to play with Louis at that time,because he was bringing wood to hisfather’s workshop where his dad

was teaching him carpentry.

―Isn’t that a lot of work?‖ Louis

asked in amazement.

―Yes, I guess it is,‖ Franz replied.

―But it’s fun to learn a new skill.

Besides, I’ll soon be a good

carpenter, like my dad. What areyou learning?‖

Louis looked down, a little ashamed,and said nothing. He said goodbyeto Franz and went on in search of others his age.

Então viu Linda, que justamentesaía pela porta da casa para daruma tigela de leite ao seugatinho. Luiz se apresentou.

 — Você gostaria de vir à minha

casa brincar hoje à tarde? — perguntou para Linda. — Tenhocaixas de roupas de fantasias.Podemos fingir que somos lordese damas e inventar umabrincadeira. Vai ser ótimo!

Linda respondeu — Puxa, euadoro me fantasiar. Mas hoje nãoposso, pois estou ajudandominha mãe. Estou aprendendo afazer pão.

 — Fazer pão? — ExclamouLuiz. — Já tentei fazer pão uma

vez. Sovar a massa é trabalhoduro! Como pode gostar de fazerisso?

 — Gosto de assar pães, — 

respondeu Linda. — Mesmo quesovar a massa seja um pouco

difícil, dá para fazer tantascoisas gostosas depois que seaprende a assar pães e doces.E você, o que está aprendendo?

Mais um vez, Luiz abaixou acabeça e admitiu que não estavaaprendendo nada. Ele se

despediu e seguiu caminho

He then met Linda,who had just steppedout of her house to

give a bowl of milkto her cat. Louisintroduced himself to

Linda.

―How would youlike to come over to

my place to playthis afternoon?‖

Louis asked Linda.―I have boxes of 

dress-up clothes.We could pretendto be lords and

ladies and make up a play. It would be great!‖

Linda said, ―Oh, I love dressing up. I

can’t do that today, though, because I’m

 baking with my mother. I’m learning

how to make bread rolls.‖

―Baking!‖ exclaimed Louis. ―I tried

baking bread once. Kneading the doughis such hard work! Why would youwant to do that?‖

―I enjoy baking,‖ said Linda. ―Eventhough it is a little bit of work to kneadthe dough, there are so many yummythings one can make once you learnhow to bake. What are you learning?‖

Once again Louis hung his head, andadmitted to Linda that he wasn’t

studying any skills. He waved goodbyeand continued on his walk.

As Louis walked through the townthat day, he met many boys and girls,all busy learning and doing things.They were happy and had goals thatthey were aiming to achieve.

That night at home, Louis had a lot tothink about. Sure he had more toysthan the children whom he’d met. Hedidn’t have to study hard if he didn’t

want to, and he could play all day. Buthe was sad, lonely, and unfulfilled. Ashe thought about it, he realized that if he wanted to be a well-rounded,useful person when he grew up, hewould need to put some work into

learning useful skills while he wasstill young, like he saw these otherchildren doing.

Soon Louis was applying himself togaining important knowledge andlearning several useful skills. Thoughit took hard work in order to learn

some of these new skills, Louis washappy and fulfilled!

Ao caminhar pelo vilarejo naquele dia,

Luiz conheceu muitos meninos emeninas, todos ocupados aprendendo efazendo alguma coisa. Eram felizes etinham metas que queriam alcançar.

Naquela noite, de volta à casa, Luiztinha muito no que refletir. Era óbvio quele tinha mais brinquedos que as outras

crianças que conhecera. Ele não tinhaque estudar se não quisesse, e podia ficabrincando o dia inteiro. Mas ele eratriste, sozinho e não se sentia realizado.Ao pensar nisso, percebeu que sequisesse ser uma pessoa útil e talentosaquando crescesse, teria que investir

esforço para aprender algumashabilidades úteis enquanto ainda erapequeno, como vira as outras criançasfazendo.

Logo, Luiz passou a se dedicar aaprender várias habilidades novas e úteiApesar de requerer trabalho duro para

aprender algumas dessas novashabilidades, ele estava feliz e realizado.

Logo ficou fascinado pelo grandecomputador na sala principal da casa deseus pais. Depois de algumas aulas como pai, Luiz decidiu que queria aprendermais coisas que pudesse fazer naquelecomputador. Seu pai concordou em lhe

dar algumas instruções básicas sobrecomo usar o computador, e concordouem ensinar também os novos amigos deLuiz, Franz e Linda, quando o visitassemnos fins-de-semana. Muitas vezes, Luizera tentado a desistir e fazer outra coisa,mas Franz e Linda o encorajavam aperseverar. Juntos, eles tinham dominadoalguns conhecimentos básicos deinformática.

Não demorou muito para Luiz criar seupróprio programa de computador. Era umhorário simples que o ajudava a

organizar os seus

dias. Eledescobriu que aofazer issoconseguiaencaixar aindamais atividadesnas quaisaprendia novashabilidades.A vida estava setornando tãoemocionante queagora era difícilencaixar todas ascoisas que queria

fazer.

In particular, Louis soon discovered afascination with the big computer setupin the main hall of his parent’s house.

After some lessons with his dad, Louisdecided that he wanted to find outmore about what one could do with it.

Louis’s dad agreed to give him somebasic instructions for using thecomputer, and agreed to teach Louis’s

new friends Franz and Linda as wellwhen they visited Louis sometimes onweekends. Louis was often tempted togive up and do something else, butFranz and Linda encouraged him to

persevere. Together they soon masteredsome basic computing skills.

Before long, Louis had created his firstcomputer program. It was a simpleschedule application that helped himorganize his

days. Hefound byscheduling hisdays he wasable to fit ineven moreskill-gainingactivities. Lifewas becomingso exciting forLouis that hewas nowhaving troublefittingeverything in

that hewanted to do.
