Scope and Content Note
“Lu Yen Music Collection” includes 779 items dating from 1930’s to 2011, with a majority between
1964 and 2008. Among the items are music scores, writings, correspondence, cartoons, photographs,
programs, clippings, documents and printed materials, and reel-to-reel tapes.
Four categories are under “Music Scores”: manuscripts, music fragments and music materials, music
analysis, and hand copied scores. Among these the composition manuscripts are the most important part of
“Lu Yen Music Collection”. There are 105 finished and unfinished pieces composed between 1964 and 2008.
The first 76 pieces are arranged chronologically. The other undated 29 works are arranged in order of sizes.
In general, a piece with a basic structure and a title is put under this category and considered a complete
composition. In particular, “School Song for Animal University” (MS046) is an arrangement. It is listed here
chronologically because it is the only arranged work. Materials under the title of a composition may include
manuscripts, one to three manuscript photo copies, computer printout or printed scores, drafts, and related
raw materials such as series tables, program notes, orchestration, lyrics, or other papers created through the
process of composing this work. Photo copies often bear hand-written notes or revisions by the composer. Lu
Yen usually made a neat copy of the complete scores with felt-tip pen. This is an indication that the
composer considered a job done. Drafts are often done in pencil.
Music fragments and music materials: Lu Yen left behind numerous music fragments, most of them
written with pencil on music notation papers, ranging from a few bars to several pages. If these could not be
categorized with any of the above mentioned 105 compositions, then they belong to this category. This
category also includes series tables, tone-row table, range, and other materials for composition. Items are
arranged in chronological orders. Under music analysis Lu Yen had written several analyses of western
classical composers with notes, e.g. “Vingt Regards Sur l' Enfant-Jesus” by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992),
“Six Short Pieces” by Arnold Schoenberg, (1874-1951), etc. Also, Lu Yen supported his study in America by
transcribing music scores. Two hand transcribed scores are listed at the end of “Music Scores” category.
There are two parts under “Writing”. In the first part are Lu Yen’s written papers while the second part
includes the five articles by Lu Yen’s widow Cheng Shih-Ya commemorating Lu Yen. Hand written slips
from the final days of Lu Yen were also included here. Most of Lu Yen’s written record is not dated. The
content includes his Chinese and English resume written after his return to Taiwan, dates and brief
introductions to his compositions, speech notes for major awards, teaching materials and notes for his classes
at Soochow University, students’ homework with comments, class rolls, hand written Buddhist sutra, Yi-jing
and notes. There are also scribbled slips, envelopes, etc. Articles by Ms. Cheng Shih-Ya are dated from 2008,
the year Lu Yen passed away to September 2011. The 11 sheets of written conversation between Lu Yen and
Cheng Shih -Ya were the final record of Lu Yen’s life, when he was in the hospital bed unable to talk.
13
Three parts make up the category “Correspondence”: First there are letters from Lu Yen’s parents and
other family members when Lu Yen was in America. Most of these are from 1965 to 1967. Next there are
correspondence, cards, and wedding invitations of Lu Yen and Cheng Shih-Ya, dated from 1998 when they
first met to their marriage in 2007. Then there are other correspondence, including letters from friends,
recommendation letters for students, dated from 1965 to about 2000. All items in this category are arranged
chronologically.
In addition to composing music, Lu Yen was also fond of illustration and drawing cartoon. Characters
came alive under his simple pen strokes, filled of humor and childlike innocence. Most of the items under the
category of “Cartoons” are drawn on music scores, documents, envelopes, slips, and are undated. So they are
arranged according to the orders assigned by Ms. Cheng Shih-Ya. Only a few have been rearranged due to
their sizes. The art works include simple sketches in ball point pen, some colored and some on A3 papers.
The themes are mostly people and animals, especially the “old donkey” which he took pride to identify with,
and the “little turtle” which represents his wife. There are also landscapes, Buddha, etc.
One hundred and four photographs are on file, including 33 of Lu Yen, 24 of him and family or wife,
and 47 with students and friends. They range from 1980 to his death. These items are mostly in chronological
orders.
Programs clippings are in chronological orders. There are seventy programs starting with the first
performance of his work in America in 1967 and ending with the Lu Yen Memorial Concert at Soochow
University in 2010. Lu Yen composed several percussion pieces and had worked closely with Forum Music.
Many concerts were performed by members of Forum Music or performed at the recital hall of Forum Music.
Newspaper clippings are mostly between 1984 and 1999. Most of them are pertaining to award ceremonies
or concerts.
Documents and printed materials contain items of varied natures, including all non-hand written papers
and some items related to Lu Yen but do not belong to any of the above mentioned categories. They are
published music, identification cards, employment letters from universities, administration and teaching
documents, a valuable music sore and a valuable book of his collection, and journal articles concerning Lu
Yen. There are 44 items classified and chronologically arranged.
“Reel-to-reel tape” includes six reels of tape recording. These include part of Lu Yen’s music, and
fragments of other music. Only SR002 and SR003 have dates of recording. Recording dates of other reels are
estimated to be in the 1980’s. Also, SR005 and SR006 cannot be identified as Lu Yen’s works. These are kept
and duplicated for the time being. Content of these reels has all been digitized.
