The Presidents Report Geoff Churcher
So, where has the first half of our fishing season gone? It’s almost Christmas and I have yet to hear any of the ”I caught 30 fish today at a secret location, reports”. Even from me! Truth be known, I personally have had a slow start to the season. Old age, golf, a broken rod, the weather, family commitments, saving up for next year’s trip to NZ - you know all the excuses already. Scott’s article on the SFF 108 Tassie trip, elsewhere in this Fly Fisher, thankfully breaks this cycle. At the November General meeting we held the vote on the Royston House Project. In the end, after an extensive due diligence process, the Committee wasn’t able to support this project. The member vote at the GM accepted the Committee’s recommendation not to proceed with this project. In reaching this position I would like to publically thank Julian Hart and his son-in-law Mark Purves for, first of all, bringing this idea to Southern and then in the very open and positive way they helped us with the due diligence processes. The tipping point was the family’s lack of assured tenure of the House. If any members have a personal interest in assisting Julian and Mark in maintaining this wonderful historic building, I am sure they would welcome your help. The Committee will continue to look for ways to enhance our stream craft training programs. There are lots of new ideas surfacing during Committee discussions about new Club Branding – SFF badges, camo SFF logos, new camo uniform caps and shirts, new sponsorships and a couple of new marketing initiatives. We are closing off the membership renewals at the end of December. Our current numbers are 85 financial members plus 10 Life members, giving a total for 95 Southern Members. We seem to be growing at 2-4 new members a month. So a total SFF membership figure of around 110 members by the end of this financial year seems achievable. One of the new marketing initiatives is to reprint our SFF Business cards. We all know that the most successful form of marketing is word of mouth referrals. So, if you could all find space in your wallets for a couple of SFF Business Cards...and talk to your mates about the great fun you get out of your SFF membership, our new member target will be easily met. I note with sadness the passing of Royce Hagen. Royce was a relatively new member of SFF. Unfortunately we didn’t see much of Royce as he had serious health problems soon after he joined. We wish to pass on the clubs thoughts and condolences to Royce’s family. On a happier note our Christmas Party in on this coming Sunday at David Wood’s home, if you are coming please ensure Jim Johnson knows so we can save ONE of Gary Rapley’s prawns for you. Please have a safe and joyous festive season. Also remember not to fish alone in isolated areas over the break. Take a newbie SFF member fishing with you and remember the life they save might be yours. Geoff Churcher

Millbrook Lakes Trip Report (Part two) Tony Hyett A group of eight Southern Fly Fishers entered the realms of Millbrook lakes domain and where instantly re classified as a proud race of a people called Millbrookians. Enter the Southern Millbrookians. The weekend of the 4th to 6th October 2013 was the time Millbrook Lakes was blessed with our presence. We were presented with some of the finest guides available David Dodd, Jim Jackman and Phil Weigall backed up by the promoters and administration guys John Clewlow, Mark Weigall and Phil Weigall himself. This entourage of brilliance left Southern members nowhere to go but onward and upward to the Lakes of a fly Fishermen’s heaven. The Lakes under Millbrook’s domain are within approximately fifteen kilometers from the accommodation cabins also on a lake. These Lakes about ten are all on private property with access only through Millbrook Lakes Fly Fishery and are fly-fishing only catch and release. I myself have mastered the art of being able to hook up a fish and release it before it reaches the bank. This is my version of catch and release which now seems to be practiced widely. These Lakes are extremely well looked after and are pristine with very controlled stocking programs, which provides the opportunity to catch trophy fish. The Southern Millbrookians comprised of Roley Ansems, Tony Hyett, Collin McMillan, Bruce Ratcliffe, Alistair O`Connor, Ray and Cathy Hill and Ken Pridgett. Late Friday afternoon is generally a very good time to fish the cabin lake with a massive amount of rising fish to a midge hatch. My success was very limited using a buzzer pattern beneath a carrot fly but is usually the best way to go. Just before dark I tied on a non weighted tan coloured No 16 nymph and wacko, it didn’t matter what type of retrieve used the fish slammed the fly. I dropped two, had at least another 8 hits and caught three great 3 pounders, before the fish went off. I was stoked. Roley, Bruce and myself had success on another lake with a red buzzer about six feet under a dry fly indicator. About three fish each landed with one of Roley’s being around 6lb. All members caught good fish and linked with the ambience of the log cabins surrounds giving way to an extremely congenial atmosphere. Bear in mind that the fishing at Millbrook lakes is not always easy, you have to work for your reward. On one lake on a clear windless day Alistair, Bruce and I polarised at least twenty fish each of 4lb upwards cruise up to our red buzzers and tease us with refusals. Very frustrating with no fish taken but how fantastic is it to watch these wonderful fish cruising through the H2O. A good number of fish were netted on the weekend and the guides were able to pick up a few tips from the Southern team.

Millbrook Lakes Trip Report (Part two) cont. Tony Hyett I look forward to next year’s trips to Millbrook in March and May being well attended. Most of our rivers and lakes in Victoria have not fished well for some time; I still believe a number of fish are there but harder to catch. Although In my opinion our fisheries are not being look after and managed by the powers that be in the interest of the angler. This is where a set up like Millbrook is ideal for a club like Southern. We can fish in areas that are being well stocked and looked after and can almost be guaranteed to catch fish at a reasonable rate. Some of the photos of our trip have been previously published in the Fly Fisher and can also be seen on the website.

The Great Southern Casting Competition – Results so far. The jousters gathered together on the 14th of November 2013 for one of the most prestigious competitions ever held during the existence of mankind. These masters of the sport came from far and wide, places like Caulfield, Mt Waverley, Highett and Malvern travelling at their own expense. The competitors were only a few in numbers but what a display of courage, expertise and entertainment. Two teams were set up “The A team” & “The B team” and I placed myself, unselfishly in the B team purely to even up the numbers. The weather was perfect and much fun and frivolity was had by all involved. Round One Results: Wet Fly: Possible 50 points A Team B Team Bruce Ratcliffe 39 Points Tony Hyett 18 Points Richard Scrivens 34 Points Les Pratt 7 Points Garry Rapley 27 Points Peter Cairns 4 points Dry Fly: Possible 50 Points A Team B Team Richard Scrivens 45 Points Tony Hyett 25 Points Bruce Ratcliffe 43 Points Les Pratt 19 Points Garry Rapley 35 Points Peter Cairns 17 Points Skish: Possible 100 Points A Team B Team Garry Rapley 87 Points Tony Hyett 55 Points Bruce Ratcliffe 84 Points Les Pratt 42 Points Richard Scrivens 75 Points Peter Cairns 41 Points Totals: Bruce Ratcliffe 166. Richard Scrivens 154. Garry Rapley 149 Tony Hyett 167. Les Pratt 68. Peter Cairns 62 Remember that the second and final round will be held on Thursday February 13 and will include an evening BBQ and a chance for everyone to have a casual cast at the hoops. So come one and all to give this caper a go and have some fun along the way.
At the November General Meeting Roley Ansems launched the Southern Fly Tying Circle concept that has been welcomed by both the Committee and the members. This will involve developing a Fly Tying workshop that will operate during the day to produce flies requested by the club members. If you are interested in participating please give Roley a call on 0418 418 457 to find out more as the exact details and logistics are currently being finalised. Get your orders ready.

VR Fish News Peter te Hennepe
State Council Meeting The VRFish AGM was held on 16th November 2013. All positions were filled with only two new Board members. The meeting continued with the new constitution being accepted. The VRFish ‘Wish List’ was discussed in detail. Ten priority items were provided by the State Election Workshop group regarding the
action items related to the 2014 State Election Policy. Items such as: - offshore all weather boat ramp access, improved funding for boat ramp capacity in Victoria, management of Corio Bay and Gippsland Lakes, consultation in Port of Hastings Expansion and increased habitat improvement and protection works programs were some of the items highlighted and discussed. After the meeting Mr. Ross McGowan (Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria) addressed the meeting. Ross provided some background on his previous work, his current position and some details on future developments. Ross also mentioned the new Fisheries Advisory Council and its advisory role to the Minister. It should be noted that Recreational Fishing License fee money is available to clubs for appropriate purposes or events. Projects which require funding such as improving habitat, fish stocking for fishing events, educational programs etc. are just some areas which receive funding. Put your ideas forward to the SFF committee. The club would also like to congratulate Peter on his appointment as one of the two CVFFA delegates to VR Fish (The Peak Body).

Marysville Golf & Fishing Day Trip Report Ken Moran The Golf Report From the indications after our last trip to this great venue we had booked for 24 starters however, sadly, we had to revise our numbers to only 8 players. What we lacked in numbers was made up by the quality of the players. "Hacker" Hyett was at his best and did his utmost to keep everyone informed whenever he hit a ball that actually found a fairway. "Legs" McDonald will be banned next year if he doesn't wear trousers as the reflection from his Lilly Whites made it hard to concentrate on a putt. It took us a while to realise that "Camo" Churcher was playing as he wore regular clothes and could not hide in the trees when "finding" his lost balls. He even tried to call a meeting but couldn't get a quorum. "Prattypuss" Pratt was looking a winner at the start until some yabbies’ refused to give back his ball from the river. "Mo" Snare at least looked like a golfer until he yelled "Six" instead of "Fore" and then claimed he didn't nick it at all. "Apples" Boast was very upset that at this time of the year there was no free fruit on the course and he forgot to pack his morning tea so his game was suffering. "Tiger" Ansems refused to be put off by the heckling from some bloke who looked like John McIntyre who kept yelling "missed again" from somewhere on the river and eventually won his maiden Marysville Championship with a 2 under par score. This reporter was unable to concentrate on his golf as he had to constantly deal with "Prima Donna's" who got upset whenever their partners refused to concede puts over 20 feet. Even allowing for all of the above, we had a great day, lots of fun and everyone enjoyed the venue and friendship. The Fishing Report Peter Suzic joined us for lunch and over a snag mentioned that he had a secret spot on the Taggerty. Before anyone had a chance to get more detail Tony had rushed to his car and was off. It took Ray & Peter an hour to catch up, thankfully they were able to get a spot and proceeded to land some nice fish, yes you guessed right, around 2 pound. Peter & Geoff were so exhausted from the golf that they decided to fish on the river along side the course, now John McIntyre had flogged this water all morning for "one fish about 6 inches" but he must have been using the wrong fly because these guys cleaned up some 20 fish between them. Did someone say totaling 2 pound? John McIntyre attached himself to the winner, Roley, and hoped for better luck on the Rubicon. As they say "you can't have it all" and so they got nothing. Les & Ken tried their luck on the Little River only to find that everyone and their dogs were also at the same place, more like Little Bourke Street. Like the golf, some win, some do Ok and others are along for the fun. Apologies to anyone who did not get a bagging.

‘Tassie 108’ Trip Report Scott Dargan You may be wondering why the 2013 Tasmania Trip has been titled the ‘Tassie 108 Trip’, and it is simply because that is the total number of fish that where caught over about seven fishing days. Scott Dargan, David Wood, Shane Bennett, Peter Cairns, Les Pratt, Malcolm Green, Ray Hill and Cathy Hill arrived at the cottage in Maydena on Friday November 29 for what was to be an adventure filled trip. The festivities started with a view across the Mountains when Peter Cairns exclaimed – ‘What do you think that is in the bedroom window next door?’ This led to 8 faces peering into said bedroom to discover that the neighbours were partaking in what can only be described as ‘Afternoon Delight!’ All Scott could say to this was welcome to Maydena! Now moving on from that show to the fishing action, we started well with many fish being landed over the first couple of days and the fishing gods indeed looked after us with the weather. Ray and Shane both caught their first wild brown trout on the Tyenna during the first day, which was sensational. We discovered a few things about Malcolm on the trip including that he is a bit of a dark horse fisherman with him landing the first fish of the trip, the last fish of the trip and quite a few nice ones in between. We also discovered that he has a fantastic appetite and greatly appreciates a nice steak (or two!). It was not long before all parties were partaking in the guiding service offered by David Dick (Tyenna Dave) and a great deal of learning commenced in earnest which was a highlight of the trip for all. It was great to see our newer members Ray and Cathy Hill out on the river in some rather challenging conditions, which saw Ray land a nice fish in some pretty rough territory. By this stage the trip tally was well on the rise. On the third day we headed to the secret lake where Scott landed a beautiful 3lb Brown assisted by Les. Everyone also enjoyed a BBQ over the open fire and a few social drinks by the lake as the sun went down. We returned to fish the Tyenna the following day and Scott had a close encounter with a large Tiger Snake that fell on him from a tree. The fishing gods were not thanked for this delivery from above. Later in the week David took Peter, Malcolm and Ray up to connect with Roley Ansems and his mate Dennis at Little Pine. They fished a number of lakes and had most success at Pine Tiers with five good fish landed. While they were away Scott, Les and Shane continued to fish the Tyenna using both nymphs and dries, with the fish responding well. Another highlight was tying our own flies each night and learning new patterns that are specific to the Tyenna. It is certainly a wonderful feeling to tie your own fly and catch all your fish on it the following day. David wood provided excellent coaching and assistance in this area, and also with casting and stream craft. He certainly demonstrated these skills by catching the most fish on the trip. Once again Peter Cairns provided exceptional food, even grain fed 30 day aged Rib eye and enough cheese to sink a battleship. The Camembert could have been mistaken for a cheesecake! Once again a wonderful trip with great camaraderie, good fishing and some memorable experiences for all. I could write more, however I will let the pictures expand on the story.
