Understanding Idiomatic Expressions
The meaning of idiomatic expressions can be very
hard—even impossible—to guess. Word structure
doesn’t always help, and can even fool us entirely! But
good readers don’t give up on the first try. They keep
reading, in search of contextual clues—examples,
explanations, opposites, or similar phrases—that can
help them figure out the meaning of idiomatic
expressions.

From what goes before and after the sentence, we
can get the meaning of the sentence: Do you think
that you have the right or power to tell others what
should be done and what should not be done? Or,
you are not entitled to teach anyone what is right or
what is wrong. To be continuedTo be continued

From the context, we might find that “have
gone a step further” means to add or explain a
bit more.

Nowadays, some people like burning the candle
at both ends. A case in point is that of my
brother. In addition to his regular job, my
brother is also serving as a consultant to several
government agencies and helping to set up his
friends in business. I just don’t know how long
his health will permit him to go on like this.

For you to be better conditioned for reading as fast as 100 words per minute, as required in the new type of examination “Speed Reading”, Text B can serve to be your fast-reading material. But, for this purpose, the best course of action is to know what to scan for in your skimming. Thus, the trick is to keep in your mind the key words of each question before you start off. That is where the “Questions Previewing” comes in.

Para. 1 He worked himself to death, finally and
precisely, at 3:00 A.M. Sunday morning.
Para. 2 The article about his death didn’t say that, of
course. It said he died of a heart attack, but every one
of his friends and acquaintances knew it instantly. He
was a perfect Type A, addicted to working, they said
to each other and shook their heads—and thought for
five or ten minutes about the way they lived.

Question 8
Para. 3 This man, Phil, who worked himself to death
finally and precisely at 3:00 A. M. Sunday morning
—on his day off—was at work. He had devoted the
last eighteen years of his life to that work. He was
fifty-one years old and a vice-president. More
precisely, he was one of six vice-presidents, and one
of three that might conceivably—if the president
died or retired soon enough—have been promoted to
the top spot. Phil could not afford a rest.

Para. 4 He worked six days a week, five of them until
eight or nine at night, during a time when his own
company had begun the four-day week for everyone
but the executives. He did not divide his time with
outside interests, unless, of course, you consider his
monthly game of golf. To Phil, it was work. He always
ate egg salad sandwiches at his desk. He was, of course,
overweight and had high blood pressure. On Saturdays,
Phil wore a sports jacket to the office instead of a suit
because it was the weekend.

Para. 6 But it did list his “survivors” quite
accurately. He is survived by his wife, Helen, forty-
eight years old, a good woman of no particular
marketable skills, who worked in an office before
marrying and mothering. She had, according to her
daughter, given up trying to compete with his work
years ago when the children were small. A company
friend said, “I know how much you will miss him.”
