Å Ä·iet, ka laiks, kas mÅ«s Ŕķir no LielÄs mÅ«zikas balvas ceremonijas 2020. gadÄ, ir ilgs kÄ mūžība. Å Ä« gada laikÄ esam piedzÄ«vojuÅ”i, centuÅ”ies pÄrvarÄt, atrast jaunus kultÅ«ras procesa modeļus situÄcijÄ, kÄdu lÄ«dz Å”im nespÄjÄm pat iedomÄties!

The time that separates us from the Grand Music Award Ceremony in 2020 seems to be as long as eternity. During this year, we have experienced and tried to overcome, as well as found new models of the cultural processes in a situation that we couldnāt even have imagined until now! Now is the time of the great musical rest, though, instead of quarter note rest it has grown into half note rest, and at times even into a whole note rest. Though, this rest is saturated with inner tension and intellectual processes, just like in works of Arvo PƤrt. I am grateful to the vast family of musicians for their creativity, strength and never-ending energy at a time when we are rapidly modulating from the act of āpresentingā in the classical sense to more up-to-date man-ner of ācreating and presentingā!Despite everything, our music culture maintains high standards and keeps evolving, so that next time when we can meet in person again, it can create an unforgettable experience! My heartfelt congratulations to all the nominees and laureates!

Imants KalniÅÅ” ienÄk latvieÅ”u mÅ«zikÄ ar simfoniÄ·a ambÄ«cijÄm 1964. gadÄ. AbsolvÄjot profesora Ädolfa Skultes kompozÄ«cijas klasi Latvijas Valsts konservatorijÄ, enerÄ£ijas pilnais jauneklis mums dÄvÄ savu Pirmo simfoniju, un drÄ«z vien tai seko arÄ« OtrÄ un TreÅ”Ä. VÄl pirms tÄm 1963. gadÄ tapis Äellkoncerts, un Å”o desmitgadi kuplina arÄ«dzan viÅa spožais Koncerts orÄ·estrim. Kritika uzteic komponista savdabÄ«go valodu, tomÄr KalniÅu neapmierina viÅa darbu rezonanse vienÄ«gi koncertzÄlÄs un Å”aurÄ profesionÄļu lokÄ ā viÅÅ” alkst uzrunÄt daudz plaÅ”Äkus sabiedrÄ«bas slÄÅus un atzÄ«st, ka vÄlÄtos dzÄ«vot revolÅ«cijas laikÄ un rakstÄ«t dziesmas. KopÄ ar domubiedriem daudzpusÄ«gais mÅ«ziÄ·is nodibina grupu ā2xBBMā un tieÅ”i tai rada savas pirmÄs roka balÄdes ar dzejnieku laikabiedru izaicinoÅ”iem un konjunktÅ«rai visai neÄrtiem tekstiem.Jau kopÅ” daiļrades sÄkumiem Imants KalniÅÅ” paralÄli darbojies arÄ« teÄtra un kino mÅ«zikas laukÄ. PÄc studijÄm viÅÅ” uzÅemas LiepÄjas teÄtra MÅ«zikas daļas vadÄ«tÄja pienÄkumus, un drÄ«z vien talantÄ«gÄ skaÅraža mÅ«zika kuplina arÄ« citu teÄtru iestudÄjumus. 1971. gadÄ top pirmÄ rokopera Padomju SavienÄ«bÄ āEi, jÅ«s tur!ā ar brÄļa Vika libretu, kura pamatÄ ir Viljama Sarojana drÄma. SavukÄrt 1973. gadÄ dzimst CeturtÄ simfonija ā opuss, kas Imanta KalniÅa vÄrdu ierakstÄ«jis Latvijas kultÅ«ras kanonÄ. StÄvovÄcijÄm sveiktais darbs sapludina akadÄmisko un neakadÄmisko mÅ«ziku. Skatuves gaitas tas sÄcis valdoÅ”ajai varai pieÅemamÄkÄ instrumentÄlÄ formÄ, atsakoties no partitÅ«rÄ sÄkotnÄji iekļautÄs vokÄlÄs partijas un tÄdÄjÄdi arÄ« teksta ā amerikÄÅu dzejnieces Kellijas Äerijas vÄrsmÄm, taÄu savÄjie vÄstÄ«jumu sadzird un saprot arÄ« bez vÄrdiem... The creative work of the composer IMants kalnIÅÅ” covers an extremely wide and diverse range of genres ā from pop songs to operas, from film scores and theatre music to symphonies. Many of the works of the outstanding maestro have become dazzling symbols of their time, so they are often called revolutionary and have gained cult status. Many of them have become folklorized over time, but continue to address personally and inspire also these days. The language of Imants KalniÅÅ”ā music is brilliantly individual and recognizable. In his style one can notice a lot of ostinato figures and detailed ornaments of a melody or a leading theme, nor it lacks characteristic harmonious sequences and cadences, but above all, it creative the fusion of the academic and non-academic music. Imants KalniÅÅ” entered the Latvian music with the ambitions of a symphonist in 1964. After graduating from the composition class of Professor Ädolfs Skulte at the Latvian State Conservatory, the energetic young man gifted us his First Symphony, which was soon followed by the Second and the Third one. Even before these compositions, the Concerto for Cello was written in 1963, and this decade boasts also his brilliant Concerto for Orchestra. Critics praised the composerās peculiar language, but KalniÅÅ” was not satisfied with the resonance of his work only in concert halls and a small circle of professionals ā he longed to address much wider sections of society and admitted that he would like to live during the revolution times and write songs. The versatile musician established a band ā2xBBMā together with the like-minded people, and created his first rock ballads based on the texts by contemporary poets, which were often quite challenging and inconvenient for the powers that be. Since the beginnings of his creative work, Imants KalniÅÅ” has also worked in the field of theatre and cinema music. After his studies, he assumed the duties of the head of the Music Department of the LiepÄja Theatre, and soon the music of the talented composer enriched also the productions of other theatres. In 1971, the first rock opera in the Soviet Union was created, āHey, You There!ā with a libretto by his brother Viks, based on a play by William Saroyan. In 1973, the Fourth Symphony was born ā an opus that etched Imants KalniÅÅ”ās name in the Latvian Culture Canon. The work was met with standing ovations and merged the academic and non-academic music. The composition started its journey on a stage in an instrumental form, which was more acceptable for the ruling power, renouncing the original vocal part of the score, and thus also the verses of the American poetess Kelly Cherry, but often the messages are heard and understood even without words... In its original form the symphony was first performed only in 1997 in the US.Several other notable works were also composed before the time of the Atmoda. Among them are the operasā I Play, I Danceā (1976) and āIphigenia in Aulisā (1981), as well as oratorios āThe Poet and the Mermaidā (1973), āMorning Hoursā (1978) and the Fifth Symphony (1979). There has also been created excellent music for such legendary films as āFour White Shirtsā (1967) and āBlow Ye Wind!ā (1973), also āLake Sonataā (1976), āThe Rocky Roadā (1983), āThe Mischief of EmÄ«lsā and āSprÄ«dÄ«tisā (1985), as well as music for the popular animated films āThe Gold Strainerā (1975), āThe Bathhouse of the Rabbitsā (1978), āBiminiā (1981) and many others. Much has also been written for the theatre, as well as songs ā both in the field of academic and non-academic music ā and concert programs for the legendary groups āMenuetsā and āTuraidas rozeā, later joined by āAutobuss debesÄ«sā, which are directly associated with the music of Imants KalniÅÅ” (also called ImKa among his friends and fans). In 1995, the tradition of āImantdienasā experienced its renaissance, but it began in 1976, bringing together those who were like-minded. Due to this very reason they were not favoured by the ruling power, so the tradition was banned in 1982. Since the time of the third awakening, Imants KalniÅÅ” seemed to be moving away from the world of music and focusing on politics. On May 4, 1990, he became one of the deputies voting for the restoration of Latviaās independence, and later served the people in the 5th, 6th, 7th and the 8th Saeima. In 1998, the artist received the Order of the Three Stars, 3rd class. And for many as a surprise, in 2011 he gifted us the Koran, he had translated into Latvian. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the maestro, in January the national music publishing house āSKANIā released a set of five albums dedicated to the symphonic music of Imants KalniÅÅ”. It contains all the seven symphonies of the maestro and the works from the concert genre, including the symphonic miniature āSantakrusaā and the impressive music of the finale from the film āBlow Ye Wind!ā In the booklet that is supplementing the monumental edition, Imants Zemzaris aptly describes the personality of his namesake and the style of his colleague, or we can also find some captivating portraits of KalniÅÅ” in several other books dedicated to his creative work, which are definitely worth flipping through, thus immersing into the beautiful depth of the nominees creative work...

Maestro aleksanDrs vIÄ»uManIs has created a dazzling page in the history of the Latvian music and opera. The conductorās creative work includes about 70 operas and 30 ballets, as well as a myriad of symphonic scores, always allocating the central place to the works of the Latvian composers. Several generations of music lovers have grown up alongside his brilliant interpretations in person and in the form of sound recordings.Aleksandrs Viļumanis is a brilliant personality, endowed with an enviable memory and talent of a passionate narrator, a temperamental and extraordinary musician with a biography worth of a novel, which lacks no curious situations and scandals, neither creative imagination or artistic dedication and moments of triumph.Having worked in opera houses of Riga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Oslo and Tampere, for twenty years Viļumanis has also created the musical program of the Sigulda Opera Music Festival, which was founded in 1993. Even twice ā from 1975 to 1986 and again from 1994 to 1996 - he performed the duties of a conductor and artistic director of the Latvian National Opera. Full of enthusiastic ardour, during this time Aleksandrs Viļumanis significantly expanded the repertoire, as well as created a wonderfully coordinated ensemble of opera singers. Such outstanding soloists as Inese Galante, Ingus PÄtersons, JÄnis SproÄ£is, Elga Brahmane, Sergejs Martinovs, Samsons Izjumovs, Nikolajs GorÅ”eÅins and Aleksandrs Poļakovs were later in the 1990s joined by Inga Kalna, Eduards Äudakovs and Egils SiliÅÅ”. Under the direction of the conductor, our opera and ballet artists have created unforgettable moments for both the Latvian audience and for the lovers of the performing arts during the guest performances in Russia, France, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, Italy and elsewhere. It is significant that also the life of the maestroās parents is linked with the RÄ«gaās White House - his father was the prominent soloist of the Latvian National Opera ā Aleksandrs Viļumanis, but his mother was the long-term concertmaster of the Opera ā HelÄna Viļumane, while the path of the musicianās spouse Baiba Viļumane is closely connected with the ballet world. If the conductor (born in 1942) has inherited his musicality and great work capacities from his talented parents, then his sense of style and dramaturgy was acquired during his studies with the legendary masters LeonÄ«ds VÄ«gners and Edgars Tons. Even before seriously focusing on conducting, the former student of the EmÄ«ls DÄrziÅÅ” Music School and the Latvian State Conservatory (now the JÄzeps VÄ«tols Latvian Academy of Music), studied also percussion. And, in 1962, he started his career at the Latvian National Opera exactly as an orchestral musician, later trying his hand at the positions of prompter, choir master and conductorās assistant. Aleksandrs Viļumanis made a convincing debut at the Latvian National Opera conductorās stand in 1968 with a production of Giuseppe Verdiās opera āTroubadourā (without any rehearsals! - replacing Rihards GlÄzups, who was unwell at that moment), and also later the abundant creative heritage of the Italian opera masters has played an important role in his repertoire, with equally significant emphasis on the stage productions of the French and Russian authors.Aleksandrs Viļumanisā contribution to the promoting of Latvian music is also invaluable - several Latvian operas or their restaged productions have been premiered under his direction. Let us remember just Imants KalniÅÅ”ā āI played, I dancedā or Romualds Kalsonsā āThe Prodigal Sonā, JÄnis MediÅÅ”ā āFire and Nightā or AlfrÄds KalniÅÅ”ā āBaÅutaā and Zigmars LiepiÅÅ”ā āNotre-Dame de Parisā. It is definitely worth highlighting the artistās attention to the large-scale vocal symphonic works and orchestral scores ā also in this field, along with the world-famous masterpieces; he has always created an opportunity to celebrate Latvian music by playing the works of both our classics and contemporaries. The creative contribution of Aleksandrs Viļumanis has been honoured with several awards. In 2012 he was awarded the Annual āLatvijas gÄzeā Opera Award, and in 2010 the maestro was appointed a Commander of the Order of the Three Stars.

Conductor aInÄrs rubIĶIsā interpretations have purposeful vision and emotional depth, as well as dramatic clarity and the ability to create the catharsis of empathy. Last year it was evident in an unusually large number of AinÄrs RubiÄ·isā concerts ā because of the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, the otherwise busy master and the musical director of the Comic Opera Berlin, spent more than a month in his homeland, finding an opportunity to perform several impressive concert programs in cooperation with the Latvian musicians. The expression of the pianist reInIs zarIÅÅ”ā interpretations possess an extraordinary balance between the very personal and unshakably objective. Last year, we had a chance to witness that on several occasions. In the Dzintari Concert Hall, ZariÅÅ” fascinated with his view of Johann Sebastian Bachās āGoldberg Variationsā, and empathically interacted with tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko in German Romantic music, and directly addressed the audience with Beethovenās First Piano Concerto, fantastically interacting with the chamber orchestra Sinfonietta RÄ«ga, lead by Normunds Å nÄ. In the Great Guild and on the stage of the CÄsis Castle Park, together with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Reinis dazzled in the interpretations of music by Igor Stravinsky and Dmitry Shostakovich, as well as surprised with the original program āBridgesā within the framework of the New Music Festival āArenaā. He also participated in the live concert streaming of the Latvian Radio, āAlone in the Studioā, and moved the audience with the masterpieces of the Viennese classics, performing as a part of the great Trio Palladio.

JÄnIs PorIetIs has polished the sound of his trumpet till perfection during his studies with outstanding experts in Latvia, the Netherlands, Finland and the USA, where he obtained a doctorate from the Unversity of Kansas. He delighted critics in the Carnegie Hall in New York, and performed in the Inauguration Parade of Barack Obama, with the Kansas Brass Quintet. Despite the tempting job offers in the US and China, Porietis returned to Latvia to refine the musical life next to us. Not only is he a lecturer at the JÄzeps VÄ«tols Latvian Academy of Music, and head of the Brass Instrument Class at the Department of Wind, Brass and Percussions, but, since 2016, also the principal trumpet of the Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra. Last year, he continued to perform regularly with organist Ilze Reine and played in various chamber ensembles. Last year, his trumpet resounded noticeably both on the stage of the CÄsis Castle Park and in the Great Guild, the home of the orchestra, and has echoed in the vaults of the Riga Cathedral , playing together with the State Choir āLatvijaā and his own wind instruments quintet. The sound of his trumpet is bright and strong, at times gentle and magical, but always precise and suggestive... And even when the trumpet in Porietisā hands is replaced by a camera, we are equally enchanted by his talent.

We know anDreI PusHkarev as a virtuoso vibraphonist, long-term soloist of the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra and a masterful arranger. The Ukraine-born musician has long since become the local and regularly enriches Latvian music life with creative surprises. Last year, among such events was a concert āVisions fugitivesā, which took place on October 3, in the Exhibition Auditorium of the Concert Hall āCÄsisā. It enchanted not only with Andreiās sparkling interaction with pianist Agnese EgliÅa, but also with his arrangement of Prokofievās music. Thanks to Pushkarevās creative ātouchā, which abounds in both the saturated jazz tones as well as stylistically rich references, we got to see the chrestomathic piano cycle in a whole new light. The creative path of pianist GeorGY osokIn is closely linked with the musical heritage of Frederic Chopin. His international success in several competitions related to the music of this legendary 19th century virtuoso is an evidence of that, which includes not only becoming a finalist in the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, but also Georgyās amazing interpretations of the romanticistās music, often described as revolutionary. When, on February 8, Georgy Osokin performed Chopinās Second Piano Concerto with Kremerata Baltica at the Dzintari Concert Hall, we had a chance to experience the emotionally captivating energy of the personality of the talented soloist that was convincingly translated into piano sound, which suggests that the way Georgy plays Chopen would have seem exciting and interesting also to the author himself. Fascinating is also the way how the youngest representative of the Osokins dynasy interacts with the Chamber Orchestra Kremerata Baltica, which has confirmed its sympathies for the gifted pianist by announcing him its first permanent guest soloist!

The emotionally saturated opus radiates sweet pain that contrasts with some darker sensations and intertwines with a timeless smile, while the vast palette of timbrall nuances in the portrayal of nature, seems like a mystical touch to the soul and eternity... The romantic opus saw its premiere on September 13, at the Dzintari Concert Hall, where it was wonderfully performed by the Chamber Orchestra Kremerata Baltica, in a mutual understanding with the violinist Hugo Ticciati - and mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini.

In uGIs PraulIÅÅ”ā picturesque cycle āMass anD InterluDes LāHOMME ARMĆā, the traditions of sacred music nicely blend in the modern soundscape. The expanded new piece is intertwined with the motifs of a song L`homme armĆ© by an anonymous Renaissance author, and the fine interludes are glamorously set alongside with the movements and chants of a traditional mass with biblical texts. The world first heard the new piece on December 20, when it enriched the Euroradio Christmas Music Day marathon from the Latvian Radio Studio 1. During the premiere, the author himself played on keyboard instruments and was joined by the vocal group Ars Antiqua Riga and organist JÄnis PelÅ”e, as well as Kaspars Majors and Vairis NartiÅ”s, who were in charge of the voices of the peculiar sounding baroque trombones, sackbuts.

The composerās emotionally tense musical expression fuses with the references to the timeless music of the great Ludwig van Beethoven, so it addresses directly and is very personal. The opus was commissioned by the world-famous Berlin-based string quartet Artemis and was also fantastically premiered by them at the LiepÄjaās āGreat Amberā concert hall within the framework of the Autumn Chamber Music Festival, which took place on October 2; and a day later was performed at the Dzintari Concert Hall, both moving, thrilling and soothing the audience.

Violinist DanIIl bulaYev has literally grown up on a stage, delighting the audience, including notable critics and harsh juries of international competitions not only in Latvia, but also far beyond its borders. In the hands of the gifted musician the violin speaks emotionally, easily and youthfully freely, at the same time being also able to raise challenging and existential questions, and last year we became convinced of that several times. In a harmonious and refined dialogue with the pianist Maxim Tanichev, Daniil surprised us and moved with the deep and heart-felt reading of the opuses of Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Francis Poulenc and MieczysÅaw Weinberg, at the concert āFrom baroque to 20th centuryā, which took place on October 20, in the VEF Culture Palace. The brilliant violin of the student of Nelly Sarkisyan excelled also at the symphonic concerts dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the EmÄ«ls DÄrziÅÅ” Music School. Technically polished and emotionally saturated was the solo of Daniil Bulayev from the Camille Saint-SaĆ«nsās virtuoso opus Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, which resounded from the stage of the Great Guild on October 16, in the program āReStart ā 75ā, where, just like at the concert of the January 29, āLai dzÄ«vo baroks!ā, at the Ziedonis Hall of the Latvian National Library, Daniil also successfully tried on a role of a concertmaster.

For three days, from July 24 to 26, the concert hall āLatvijaā celebrated its 1st anniversary by inviting guests to the concert performance āoneā. It was a unique journey in the new Ventspilsā Concert Hall and the music of Darius Milhaud, which was made remarkable by the creative concept of artists Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo, as well as the
Jubilee Chamber Orchestra, assembled by the conductor Aigars Meri. The creative team had brilliantly embodied the idea of being solitary and united, which aptly reflected on the strange time of pandemics, when solitude is more significant than ever and so essential for achieving a common goal and perhaps even survival. The Six Little Symphonies of the representative of the legendary French group of six composers, or āThe Sixā, sounded unusual and fresh, and all the individual voices addressed the listeners from different parts of the concert hall and were all united in a rich music experience. Listeners were invited to experience both an intimate dialogue with each instrument and to feel the power of the unity by immersing themselves in the sound of the orchestra. Step by step and sound after sound, the guests of the anniversary witnessed both the impressive buildings and architectural subtleties of the composition, as well as its scope...

The concert āIveta aPkalna, raIMonDs Pauls anD lnsoā, which took place within the framework of the Organ Music Festival āORGANismiā under the considerate management of the conductor JÄnis Stafeckis, on October 24, at the Embassy of Latgale GORS, was an Event that will be remembered for a long time to come. When two such dazzling personalities met on the stage for the first time ā the world-famous organist Iveta Apkalna and the legendary pianist and composer Raimonds Pauls, we were destined to experience a fantastic musical understanding, which addressed the listeners with both the high professionalism and deep emotionality... Alongside with the music of the maestro ā popular melodies from motion pictures, quotes from the slightly forgotten opuses from the early years and the new piece written especially for Iveta Apkalna, also compositions by Giya Kancheli and Samuel Barber were performed.
