We are well into the new academic year and I am pleased to share with you some of the recent developments and upcoming events at Yu Neng.

1. UPDATES1.1 Hosting Overseas Visit to the School

We hosted a visit for Indonesia Bina Bangsa School on Tues 31 March. The delegation comprising the principal, vice-principal, 3 staff and 34 pupils had a good time interacting with our Yu Neng pupils. Our guests enjoyed learning more about the various programmes in Yu Neng and had a better understanding of the education system in Singapore during the half-day tour. It was indeed a memorable experience for pupils and staff from both schools! Coincidentally, we found out that the Indonesia Bina Bangsa principal, Mr Yew Yi, is a former pupil of Yu Neng Primary School !

1.2 P4 Cultural Immersion Trip to Malacca

To help students develop key 21st century competencies such as civic literacy, global awareness and cross cultural skills that will prepare them to thrive in the age of globalization, the P4 pupils embarked on a 2-day/1-night Cultural immersion trip to Malacca on 1-2 April 2015. During the trip, the pupils visited SJK (Tamil) School and had opportunities to learn and interact with the Malaysian pupils. In addition, the pupils were engaged in a fun-filled and authentic learning experience as they visited the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum and UNESCO Heritage City, George Town to develop understanding and appreciation of the Peranakan culture and Dutch/Portuguese influences on the history of Malacca.

1.3 Cyber Wellness Student Ambassador Conference 2015

Our Cyber Wellness (CW) student ambassadors, Tan Jia Jun and Darren Tan of Resilience 6-1, Tee Mei Qi of Teamwork 5-1 and Beldon Chow of Teamwork 5-3 gave a presentation of Yu Neng’s Cyber Wellness Programme at the Cyber Wellness Ambassador Programme Conference 2015 which took place at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on Wed 25 March.

The Director of Educational Technology, Mrs Shirleen Ong-Chee Yan Hoon, stopped by the booth set up by our CW student ambassadors to talk to them. 1.4 English Week, Mon-Thur 30 March to 2 April 2015

“Passionate Readers, Eloquent Speakers” is the theme for this year’s English Week. Working hand in hand with the library teachers, Madam Sitti Zainon and Ms Lee Hui Shan, the Parent Support Group (PSG) worked very hard to entice pupils to love the English Language through games which incorporated sight words, phrasal verbs and idioms. The pupils had fun in fishing “rhyming words” out from pools and dressing up as “idioms”. Creativity filled the air with our kind parent volunteers running the English activities alongside the teachers during the recess periods. A big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who were instrumental in the success of the English Week.

2. UPCOMING EVENTS2.1 International Friendship Day Fri 10 April 2015

The school will be commemorating International Friendship Day (IFD) on Fri 10 April 2015. In conjunction with the theme this year, 'Deepening International Friendships', the pupils will be engaged in a special class activity and assembly programme to learn about and appreciate other cultures in cosmopolitan Singapore. We hope that parents will connect with your child/children and encourage them to share with you some of the lesson ‘take-aways’ he/she had gained from the IFD activities.

2.2 P4 Road Safety Park Tue 28 April 2015

To heighten the awareness of road safety, the P4 pupils will be participating in an authentic learning experience at the Road Safety Park on Tue 28 April 2015. Through the road safety programme, we hope to instill a safety mindset on “Think Safe, Play Safe, Stay Safe” and help them to be responsible road users.

2.3 P6 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve visit Mon-Fri 13-17 April

The P6 pupils will be embarking on a 1-day learning journey to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve during the period 13-17 April. During the trip, the pupils will learn about how the various unique plants and animals adapt in the harsh environment of the mangroves through a nature walk and hands-on workshop. The pupils will also get to participate in an ecological game to enhance their knowledge on the biodiversity of mangroves. More details will be provided separately closer to the trip.

2.3 Class Photo-taking session

There will be a class Photo-taking session for all pupils on Monday, 27 April 2015. Pupils are reminded to be in their full school uniform (with school tie) on that day. For pupils who have PE lessons on that day, they are also required to bring along their PE T-shirts and shorts to change into for their PE lesson. Parents may want to ensure that your child is dressed smartly and come in a neat hairstyle on that day.

2.4 Stand Down of CCA

As mentioned in the previous LTP (Jan) dated 5 Jan 2015, all CCAs will stand down Mon-Fri 27 April to 29 May 2015 in view of the Semestral Assessment 1. Parents may want to set aside some time to provide some support and encouragement to our pupils as they prepare for their SA1 during this period.

2.5 Labour Day on Fri 1 May

Labour Day falls on Friday, 1 May this year. As it is a public holiday, pupils need not come to school that day. School will resume on Monday, 4 May.

3. IN CLOSING

We would like to thank you once again for your continuous support and encouragement.
