Available Positions

A. York Region District School Board (YRDSB) invites parents, guardians or caregivers of students attending schools in the

following areas:

CEC East – one elementary, one secondary

CEC West – one elementary

CEC Central – one elementary

CEC North – one elementary, one secondary

Membership is available for one (1) year or two (2) years on the Parent, Family and Community Engagement Advisory

Committee (PEAC) to commence in November 2019. The Board will approve membership terms, as required. There are

currently six (6) positions available. To check the respective schools in each area (CEC East, West, Central and North) use our school locator.

Further information about the role of PEAC may be found at the Ontario Ministry of Education website School Councils and

Parent Involvement Committees. Parents/guardians interested in serving as a member of PEAC are asked to submit an

electronic application between May 21, 2019 and June 17, 2019 (final deadline) using the Google Form or calling Education and Community Services at 905- 727-0022 ext. 2242 to submit a paper application.

We are refreshing the www.yrdsb.ca website and our school websites, and invite you to share your feedback through a brief survey. The information from the surveys will help us ensure that the content,

navigation and layout meet the needs of students, families and community members.

Our websites provide important information about our school and Board, resources to help your child succeed, school programs and more.

The two-part survey is anonymous, confidential and voluntary, and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. If you have any questions

STUDENT AWARD

Student Spark Speech Competition Winner

Amira also placed in the Top Four in York Region for her Student Spark Speech that she presented on Student Voice in French. Amira will be presenting her speech at the EdTech Camp in

September.

What is a Student Spark?

A Student Spark is a four-minute talk in which students share their ideas and spark thought in others on a particular topic. Their talks are supported by a slide deck that consists of 16 slides. The

slides auto-advance every 15 seconds.

The Talks this year were inspired by one of the following three prompts:

● What should the school system look like to best prepare you for your future?

● How has technology shaped who you are and who you want to be? ● How might students use their voice to impact the world around them?

The Alliance of Educators for Black Students Annual Student Awards

On Thursday May 2nd at Richmond Green Secondary School, Amira Z.

in grade 7, won an award from the Alliance of Educators for Black Students. This Achievement Award

was for her continuous positive school involvement &

leadership.

EQAO REMINDER

Starting next week, grade 3 & 6 students, will be participating in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO’s) Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary

and/or Junior Divisions.

In six one-hour sessions, students will complete a variety of assessment activities designed to allow them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge relating to reading, writing and

mathematics as described in The Ontario Curriculum. The assessment is administered province-wide and is developed by Ontario teachers and assessment experts to reflect curriculum

expectations. Please be reminded that, as in previous years, Grade 3 students in French Immersion programs will be completing only the mathematics component of the assessment in a French translation. Grade 3 students will not be completing the reading and writing components and will receive

results only for mathematics.

All Grade 6 students in French Immersion programs will participate in all three English-language assessments. An English/French glossary of mathematical terms will be provided.

As an extension to our snack program, students in grade 3 & 6 will be provided with a snack

before or after their assessment. Snacks will range from juice boxes, school safe cookies, and/or school safe granola bars.

Grade 6 students will be writing on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning of next week.

Grade 3 students will write on Wednesday and Thursday morning of next week.

We would appreciate it if families could avoid signing out their children during these times.

Fight the Bite!against blacklegged ticks and Lyme disease

What are blacklegged ticks?

Ticks are small bugs that feed Ticks can be found on tall grasses Ticks attach themselves to people oro˜ the blood of animals and humans. Adult ticks and bushes in wooded areas animals who brush past. Most tick bites

are the size of a sesame seed. Nymphs (adolescent almost anywhere in Ontario are painless and ticks can attach ticks) are no bigger than a poppy seed. including York Region. themselves and feed for up to five days.

If you find a tick on yourself or a family member remove it quickly!

1. Grasp the tick with tweezers as closeas possible to your skin and pullit straight out

2. Do not put anything on the tick or tryto burn it o˜

3. Disinfect the area with rubbing alcohol4. Wrap the tick in a moist paper towel

and put in a screw-top container5. Store it in the fridge until you can bring

it into a York Region Public Healthlocation

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi which is spread through the bite of an

infected blacklegged tick. Not all ticks are infected with the bacteria.

Symptoms of Lyme disease may include: • A skin rash• Fatigue or weakness• Headache• Fever or chills• Dizziness or confusion• Muscle and joint pain• Swollen lymph nodesMost people will start to show signs of illness within one to two weeks. See your health provider if you develop symptoms of Lyme disease a°er a tick bite or a°er visiting a wooded or brushy area.

Protect yourself each time you are in a wooded or brushy area by: • Wearing light-coloured, longpants, long-sleeved tops andclosed footwear

• Using an insect repellentcontaining DEET or icaridin

• Walking in the middle of the trail• Showering when you get home

to remove unattached ticks• Checking yourself, your family

and your pets for ticks• Removing attached ticks as

quickly as possible
