Wat is jou

besluit?

Om die beste Man vir my vrouen pa vir my kinders te wees. Natuurlikkan ek dit nie in my eie krag doen nie. Ja

Lessons from LionsWatching the Lions win a hard-contestedSuper Rugby game against the Waratahs, 27–22, was an absolute joy to watch.Win or lose, every game the Lions play is amasterpiece. And, I don’t mean just for thebrand of rugby they play, but for the waythey play the game. Here’s a team that has no ‘superstars’ andhas little chance of shaping in the SuperRugby competition, let alone making theplayoffs. Yet, its now on the brink of gettinga shot at the playoffs above teams that haveastounding pedigrees, and the silverware intheir cabinets to prove it.I don’t know what the future will hold for theLions. But, win or lose, they’re an example ofwhat can be done when you get the reciperight and play the game in the right spirit. No JudgementWhen any player makes a mistake and givescoach Johan Ackermann (and me) a heartattack, there’s no judgement. Another playerwill go up to the ‘culprit’ and give him wordsof encouragement. I suspect that there’s a‘no-blame’ culture in the Lions that allowsplayers to more freely express their individualtalents. The players have been givenpermission to push the envelope and whenthey don’t pull it off, they see it as a learningexperience.Set Each Other Up To WinThis for me is the most endearing aspect ofthe Lions. You can see that they arecomrades-in-arms. You get that they reallycare for each other. They are selfless and seteach other up to win. Here’s a bunch of

individuals that will go to hell and back foreach other.Focus On ProcessMany teams focus on the result, which isobviously to win. I’m sure that the Lions doto. But it is patent that whilst winning is atthe back of their mind, it’s not what they focuson. They focus on the process of playingrugby to the best of their ability. They knowif they give 100% focus on the process andgetting better and better, the result will come. They Live In JoyThe Lions are one of the few Super Rugbyteams I’ve seen that play with abandon andpure joy. You just get that they are enjoyingthemselves on the field because they areexpressing the best of themselves. And,because they enjoy themselves, they just playbetter. They appear to get in the zone moreoften than not and flow beautifully.Maybe I’m just romanticising the Lions andwhat they have achieved against all odds. Bethat as it may, I think that the Lions areteaching us all lessons on how to conductourselves in this human endeavour.Do what you love, live in joy, be curious andnot judgemental, be encouraging, focus inthe moment on doing your best work and setothers around you up to win. It doesn’t matterif you win or lose. What’s important is thatyou’ve played your game magnificently andboth you and those you care for havebenefitted in untold ways.

Load shedding is at the top of the agendaSouth African business owners’ worst fears ofthe 2008 blackouts re-occurring are beingrealised with billions of rand in potentialeconomic growth being wiped out every monthas widespread power outages affect thecountry.”Load shedding currently tops the list ofinsurance nightmares keeping business ownersawake at night. But they are also nightmareswhich businesses can insure against,” saysBryan Verpoort, Head of Corporate andBusiness Insurance at Standard Bank, as heunpacks five insurance risks that everybusiness owner should make sure they areadequately protected against:Load sheddingPersistent load shedding is the number oneinsurance nightmare for companies andindividuals, because most policies simply donot cover the consequential damages thatcould arise from a power cut.Mr Verpoort says the problem is that a powercut is a foreseeable event and insurance isdesigned for events that are not planned. Loadshedding is, unfortunately, predictable andtherefore manageable. The onus of riskmitigation therefore lies on the business ownerrather than on the Insurer.Ninety percent of claims are not likely to becovered in the event of a power cut, as coveragewould generally apply up to a limited amountwhere power surges or spikes cause damage toequipment, like servers or printers. Still, business interruption insurance is being takenout on the mistaken belief that they are coveredfor consequential losses, when in fact this typeof insurance only covers perilous events suchas wind, snow, fire, or an explosion as theunderlying cause.”There has been an increase in requests forthis type of insurance and we are trying toeducate clients that it may not be the solutionto load shedding problems,” he continues.

Weather-related damagesWhile certain risks are foreseeable, there isjust no certainty when it comes to weather.Rain and hail damage in 2012 led tothousands of claims worth an estimated R1billion, and early indications are hail damagecould be significant again this year in thesummer rainfall region.”We have already seen some severe stormsin the first quarter of 2015; and, while notyet as bad as 2012; there is a major risk ofan increase in claims later this year. Hailhas been a theme for two years running,”says Mr Verpoort. It’s not just hail, however, that poses risks. Many businesses – recently livestockfarmers – are faced with weather-relatedproblems that can come in cycles, or be one-off events (like floods), and are increasinglyat risk of under-insuring themselves againstlosses of livestock, produce or other goodsand equipment.”Adequate business insurance cover andunderstanding the reasonable steps aninsurer expects a business owner to take insafeguarding their assets can go a long wayin alleviating these stresses and ensuringthat, should an unforeseeable event occur, business owners have the peace of mindthat their claims won’t be repudiated.Regardless of the business’ insurance needs– in these tough economic conditions it isessential for business owners to speak toan advisor to ensure that they have thecorrect cover in place to avoid significantfinancial losses,” concludes Mr Verpoort.Remember our free Entrepreneurshiptraining. is verbrande hout. So wat is jou lewens uitkyk?VredePastoor Johan Venter
