Why do we do Simran?

ਸਾਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ॥ਆਨ ਤਤਆਤਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਤਸਮਤਰ ਤਸਮਤਰ ਤਸਮਤਰ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ ਆਤਪ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ ॥

To my friends who are Saints, make this

your work. Renounce everything else, and

Jap Har’s Name. Simer, simer, simer and

find peace. You Jap and have others Jap

too.

Jap means to Chant

You can chant with your mouth or mind or

sometimes both.

People use tools outside of Gurmat

ਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਅਖਰ ਦੁਇ ਇਹ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ ਜਪਤ ਜਪਤ ਭਏ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥੧॥ These two words, Har, Har, make up my

mala. By continuing to Jap, God has

become merciful to me, His humble servant.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਿੁਰਮੁਤਖ ਪਰਿਾਸਾ ॥ਨਾਮ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਵਆ ਸਭ ਸਾਸ ਤਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਤ ਸੁਨੀ ਮਤਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੨॥ Chant the Naam, as Gurmukh, and be exalted.

Without the Naam, I have no other support; the

Naam is woven into my SasGras. ||1||Pause||

When my Surti listens to the Naam illuminates

my mind and it is pleased. One who speaks the

Naam he alone is my friend and companion.

||2||

ਸਿਲੇ ਜੰਤ ਭਜਹੁ ਿੋਪਾਲੈ ॥

All beings vibrate and meditate on the Lord

of the World.

ਪੰਤਿਤੁ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਉਚਾ ਕੂਕਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਤਹ ਤਪਆਰੁ ॥ ਅੰਤਤਰ ਿਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਈ ਮਤਨ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਿਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਜਿਤੁ ਪਰਿੋਧਦਾ ਨਾ ਿੂਝੈ ਿੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ ਤਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਿਵਾਇਆ ਮਤਰ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read, and shout out loud, but they are attached to the love of Maya.

They do not recognize God within themselves-they are so foolish and ignorant! In the love of duality, they try to teach the world, but they do not understand meditative contemplation. They lose their lives uselessly; they die, only to be re-born, over and over again. ||1|| 86

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਤਕਛੁ ਤਿਤਧ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ ਤਜਉ ਕੁੰ ਚਰੁ ਨਾਇ ਖਾਕੁ ਤਸਤਰ ਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥ ਜੇ ਵਿ ਭਾਿ ਹੋਵਤਹ ਵਿ ਊਚੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤਹ ਸਤਚ ਸੂਚੇ ॥੪॥੭॥੫੯॥ One who acts in ego, knows nothing about the

Way. He acts like an elephant, who takes a

bath, and then throws dust on his head. ||3||

If one's destiny is great and exalted, O Nanak,

one chants the Naam, the Name of the

Immaculate, True Lord. ||4||7||59||

Truth Illusion

Without Kirpa/ Grace nothing is possible

ਕਤਰ ਤਕਰਪਾ ਤਜਸੁ ਆਪਨੈ ਨਾਤਮ ਲਾਏ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਤਹ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਿਤਤ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥ Those who have

Kirpa get attached to the Naam - O Nanak,

in the fourth state, those humble servants

attain salvation. ||5|| 284

Sato gun compassion,

contentment, humility,

tolerance, moral control

Tamo gun Sexual behavior, Anger,

Greed Attachment, Pride

(FIRE)

Rajo gun Hopes Wishes, Desires

Anxiety ,Worries (PAVAN)

ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਹਤਰ ਰੰਿ ਰੰਿੋ ॥ ਜਤਪ ਤਜਹਵਾ ਹਤਰ ਏਕ ਮੰਿੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Dye yourself in the color of the Lord's Love.

Jap the Name of the One Lord with your

tongue, and ask for Him alone. ||1||Pause||
