What is liberation?

You have to know God.

ਸਨਹਫਲੰ ਿਸਿ ਜਨਮਸਿ ਜਾਵਿੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਸਬੰ੍ਦਿੇ ॥ Life is useless, as long as one does not know the Lord God.

You do not know sin, the purpose of your life, what separates you from God.

ਨਰ ਅਚੇਿ ਪਾਪ ਿੇ ਡਰੁ ਰੇ ॥ You people are unconscious; you should be afraid of sin.

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਿਿਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਿਰਸਨ ਿਾਸਹ ਿੁਮ ਪਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Seek the Sanctuary of the Lord, Merciful to the meek, Destroyer of all fear. ||1||Pause||

ਬ੍ੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਜਾਿ ਿੁਨ ਿਾਵਿ ਿਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੀਐ ਮੋ ਿਰੁ ਰੇ ॥ The Vedas and the Puraanas sing His Praises; enshrine His Name within your heart.

ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਸਿ ਮੈ ਹਸਰ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਸਰ ਸਿਮਸਰ ਕਿਮਲ ਿਭ ਹਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ Pure and sublime is the Name of the Lord in the world. Remembering it in meditation, all sinful mistakes shall be washed away. ||1||

ਮਾਨਿ ਦੇਹ ਬ੍ਹੁਸਰ ਨਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਕਛੂ ਉਪਾਉ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਕਾ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ॥ You shall not obtain this human body again; make the effort - try to achieve liberation!

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਿ ਿਾਇ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਮੈ ਭਵ ਿਾਿਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਰ ਉਿਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੯॥੨੫੧॥ Says Nanak, sing of the Lord of compassion, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||9||251||

ਬ੍ਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਸਰ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਮਸਨ ਸਹਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ People wear all sorts of costumes and wander all around, but in their hearts and minds, they practice deception.

ਹਸਰ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਈ ਮਸਰ ਸਵਿਟਾ ਮਾਸਹ ਿਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ They do not attain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and after death, they sink into manure. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਿਰਹ ਹੀ ਮਾਸਹ ਉਦਾਿੁ ॥ O mind, remain detached in the midst of your household.

ਿਚੁ ਿੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਿੋ ਕਰੇ ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਿਾਿੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Practicing truth, self-discipline and good deeds, the Gurmukh is enlightened. ||1||Pause||

ਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਿਬ੍ਸਦ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਸਿਆ ਿਸਿ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਘਰੈ ਮਸਹ ਪਾਇ ॥ Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind is conquered, and one attains the State of Liberation in one's own home.

ਹਸਰ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਈਐ ਿਿਿੰਿਸਿ ਮੇਸਲ ਸਮਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ So meditate on the Name of the Lord; join and merge with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||2||

No Hypocrisy on this path

ਿਨੁ ਬੈ੍ਿੰਿਸਰ ਹੋਮੀਐ ਇਕ ਰਿੀ ਿੋਸਲ ਕਟਾਇ ॥ If I cut my body into pieces, and burn them in the fire, ਿਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਿਮਿਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਅਿਸਨ ਜਲਾਇ ॥ and if I make my body and mind into firewood, and night and day burn them in the fire, ਹਸਰ ਨਾਮੈ ਿੁਸਲ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕੋਟੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ and if I perform hundreds of thousands and millions of religious rituals-still, all these are not equal to the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਅਰਿ ਿਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਈਐ ਸਿਸਰ ਕਰਵਿੁ ਿਰਾਇ ॥ If my body were cut in half, if a saw was put to my head,

ਿਨੁ ਹੈਮੰਚਸਲ ਿਾਲੀਐ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਿੇ ਰੋਿੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ and if my body were frozen in the Himalayas-even then, my mind would not be free of disease.

ਹਸਰ ਨਾਮੈ ਿੁਸਲ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਿਭ ਸਡਠੀ ਠੋਸਕ ਵਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ None of these are equal to the Name of the Lord. I have seen and tried and tested them all. ||3||

ਕੰਚਨ ਕੇ ਕਟੋ ਦਿੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਹੁ ਹਵੈਰ ਿੈਵਰ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ If I made a donation of castles of gold, and gave lots of fine horses and wondrous elephants in charity, ਭੂਸਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਿਊਆ ਘਣੀ ਭੀ ਅੰਿਸਰ ਿਰਬ੍ੁ ਿੁਮਾਨੁ ॥ and if I made donations of land and cows-even then, pride and ego would still be within me. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਸਮ ਮਨੁ ਬ੍ੇਸਿਆ ਿਸੁਰ ਦੀਆ ਿਚੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੪॥ The Name of the Lord has pierced my mind; the Guru has given me this true gift. ||4||

Be careful of Religious People who call themselves elevated and have titles.

ਅੰਿਸਰ ਕਪਟੁ ਭਿਉਿੀ ਕਹਾਏ ॥ He is full of deceit, and yet he calls himself a devotee of Bhagaautee.

ਪਾਖੰਸਡ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ Through hypocrisy, he shall never attain the Supreme Lord God.

ਪਰ ਸਨੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਿਸਰ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ He slanders others, and pollutes himself with his own filth.

ਬ੍ਾਹਸਰ ਮਲੁ ਿੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜੂਸਠ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥ Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away.

ਿਿਿੰਿਸਿ ਸਿਉ ਬ੍ਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਏ ॥ He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਚਾਏ ॥ Night and day, he suffers, engrossed in the love of duality.

ਹਸਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਿੈ ਬ੍ਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals.

One can not achieve liberation with out good lifestyle.

Do not trust those who ask for money.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਕਰਿੂਿੀ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ Without good deeds, liberation is not obtained.

ਮੁਕਸਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The wealth of liberation is only obtained by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਪੂਜਾ ਸਿਲਕ ਕਰਿ ਇਿਨਾਨਾਂ ॥ He performs worship ceremonies, applies the ceremonial tilak mark to his forehead, and takes his ritual cleansing baths;

ਛੁਰੀ ਕਾਸਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਹਸਥ ਦਾਨਾ ॥੨॥ he pulls out his knife, and demands donations. ||2||

ਬ੍ੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਸਖ ਮੀਠੀ ਬ੍ਾਣੀ ॥ With his mouth, he recites the Vedas in sweet musical measures,

ਜੀਆਂ ਕੁਹਿ ਨ ਿੰਿੈ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੩॥ and yet he does not hesitate to take the lives of others. ||3||

ਅਸਿਆਿਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਿਾ ਿਾਚਾ ॥ Those who live a spiritual lifestyle - they alone are true.

ਮੁਕਸਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਸਕਆ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਾਚਾ ॥੧॥ What can the false know about the secrets of liberation? ||1||

Put away the physical and look for Namm.

ਨਿਨ ਸਫਰਿ ਜੌ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੋਿੁ ॥ If Yoga could be obtained by wandering around naked, ਬ੍ਨ ਕਾ ਸਮਰਿੁ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਿਭੁ ਹੋਿੁ ॥੧॥ then all the deer of the forest would be liberated. ||1|| ਸਕਆ ਨਾਿੇ ਸਕਆ ਬ੍ਾਿੇ ਚਾਮ ॥ What does it matter whether someone goes naked, or wears a deer skin, ਜਬ੍ ਨਹੀ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਆਿਮ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ if he does not remember the Lord with his soul? ||1||Pause||

ਮੂਡ ਮੁੰ ਡਾਏ ਜੌ ਸਿਸਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ If the spiritual perfection of the Siddhas could be obtained by shaving the head,

ਮੁਕਿੀ ਭੇਡ ਨ ਿਈਆ ਕਾਈ ॥੨॥ then why haven't sheep found liberation? ||2||

ਸਬੰ੍ਦੁ ਰਾਸਖ ਜੌ ਿਰੀਐ ਭਾਈ ॥ If someone could save himself by celibacy, O Siblings of Destiny,

ਖੁਿਰੈ ਸਕਉ ਨ ਪਰਮ ਿਸਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥ why then haven't eunuchs obtained the state of supreme dignity? ||3||

ਕਹੁ ਕਬ੍ੀਰ ਿੁਨਹੁ ਨਰ ਭਾਈ ॥ Says Kabeer, listen, O men, O Siblings of Destiny:

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਸਕਸਨ ਿਸਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥ without the Lord's Name, who has ever found salvation? ||4||4||

How is the mind trapped?

ਪਸਹਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਸਣ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਸਰਆ ਸਮਿਰਾ ਬ੍ਾਲਕ ਬ੍ੁਸਿ ਅਚੇਿੁ ॥ In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding.

ਖੀਰੁ ਪੀਐ ਖੇਲਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਸਰਆ ਸਮਿਰਾ ਮਾਿ ਸਪਿਾ ਿੁਿ ਹੇਿੁ ॥ You drink milk, and you are fondled so gently, O my merchant friend, the mother and father love their child.

ਮਾਿ ਸਪਿਾ ਿੁਿ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਿਬ੍ਾਈ ॥ The mother and father love their child so much, but in Maya, all are caught in emotional attachment.

The moment you took milk and felt the embrace of family you got attached to Maya.

No one achieves liberation after death so put your efforts in something permanent.

ਸਨਕੁਟੀ ਦੇਹ ਦੇਸਖ ਿੁਸਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ੂਝ ੈ॥ Gazing upon the tiny bodies of your children, love has welled up within your heart; you are proud of them, but you do not understand.

ਲਾਲਚੁ ਕਰੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਚਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਿੂਝੈ ॥ You long for the dignity of a long life, but your eyes can no longer see anything.

ਥਾਕਾ ਿੇਜੁ ਉਸਡਆ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਘਸਰ ਆਂਿਸਨ ਨ ਿੁਖਾਈ ॥ Your light has gone out, and the bird of your mind has flown away; you are no longer welcome in your own home and courtyard.

ਬ੍ੇਣੀ ਕਹੈ ਿੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਭਿਿਹੁ ਮਰਨ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਸਕਸਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥ Says Baynee, listen, O devotee: who has ever attained liberation after such a death? ||5||

Maya Has two Forms

Physical- anything made out of 5 elements.

Sublet- Any thought you have.

We are enveloped in Maya that is why anything we do for the body wont get the Mind liberation.

Maya is what we need liberation from.

ਰਜ ਿੁਣ ਿਮ ਿੁਣ ਿਿ ਿੁਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਇਹ ਿੇਰੀ ਿਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ Rajo gun; Tamo gun and Sato gun, are all called Maya.

ਇੰਦਰੀ ਦਿੇ ਦਿੇ ਫੁਸਨ ਿਾਵਿ ਿਰੈ ਿੁਣੀਆ ਸਖਨੁ ਨ ਸਟਕਾਵੈਿੋ ॥ There are ten organs of sense and action; the ten wander unrestrained. Under the influence of the three dispositions, they are not stable, even for an instant.

ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਵਿਿਸਿ ਆਵੈ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਿੋ ਪਾਵੈਿੋ ॥੩॥ Coming in contact with the True Guru, they are brought under control; then, salvation and liberation are attained. ||3||

There are 4 boons given for every Human.

3 are for the body and one is for the Mind.

ਚਾਸਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਸਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

He came into the world to obtain the four great blessings.

ਸਿਵ ਿਕਿੀ ਘਸਰ ਵਾਿਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

He came to dwell in the home of the Shiva and Shakti, energy and matter.

ਏਕੁ ਸਵਿਾਰੇ ਿਾ ਸਪੜ ਹਾਰੇ ਅੰਿੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਵਿਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

But he forgot the One Lord, and he has lost the game. The blind person forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||

ਚਾਸਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਸਿ ਜਨਸਮਆ ਸਿਵ ਿਕਿੀ ਘਸਰ ਵਾਿ ੁਿਰ ੇ॥

One is born to achieve the four great objectives of life. The spirit has taken up its home in the material world. ਲਾਿੀ ਭੂਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਿੁ ਜਹੋੈ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੋਸਹ ਖਰੇ ॥੩॥ Driven by hunger, it sees the path of Maya's riches; this emotional attachment takes away the treasure of liberation. ||3|| ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਇਿ ਉਿ ਿੂਿਿ ਥਾਸਕ ਪਰੇ ॥ Weeping and wailing, he does not receive them; he searches here and there, and grows weary. ਕਾਸਮ ਕਰੋਸਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਸਰ ਸਵਆਪੇ ਕੂੜ ਕਟੰੁਬ੍ ਸਿਉ ਪਰੀਸਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥ Engrossed in sexual desire, anger and egotism, he falls in love with his false relatives. ||4|

ਕਰਮ ਿਰਮ ਪਰਸਭ ਮੇਰੈ ਕੀਏ ॥ My God created religious rituals.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਸਿਸਰ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਕੀਏ ॥੪॥ He placed the glory of the Naam above these rituals. ||4||

ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਚਾਸਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ॥ The four great blessings are under the control of the True Guru.

ਿੀਸਨ ਿਮਾਏ ਏਕ ਸਕਰਿਾਰਥ ॥੫॥ When the first three are put aside, one is blessed with the fourth. ||5||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਸਪ ਹਸਰ ਿੁਨ ਅਕਥ ਿੁਨਥਈ ॥ O my mind, chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, which are said to be inexpressible.

ਿਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਿਭੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਮੋਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਨ ਪੀਛੈ ਲਸਿ ਸਫਰਥਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Righteousness and Dharmic faith, success and prosperity, pleasure, the fulfillment of desires and liberation - all follow the humble servant of the Lord like a shadow. ||1||Pause||

Without Namm no one got to Liberation.

ਜਾਿੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਿ ੇਆਵੈ ॥ How can we know where we came from?

ਕਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ਿਮਾਵੈ ॥ Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge?

ਸਕਉ ਬ੍ਾਸਿਓ ਸਕਉ ਮੁਕਿੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation?

ਸਕਉ ਅਸਬ੍ਨਾਿੀ ਿਹਸਜ ਿਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Lord? ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਦੈ ਅੰਸਮਰਿੁ ਮੁਸਖ ਨਾਮ ੁ॥ With the Naam in the heart and the Ambrosial Naam on our lips,

ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਸਨਹਕਾਮ ੁ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ through the Name of the Lord, we rise above desire, like the Lord. ||1||Pause||

4th State can only be explained through a True Guru.

ਜਨਸਮ ਮਰੈ ਿਰੈ ਿੁਣ ਸਹਿਕਾਰੁ ॥ One who loves the three qualities is subject to birth and death.

ਚਾਰੇ ਬ੍ੇਦ ਕਥਸਹ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ The four Vedas speak only of the visible forms.

ਿੀਸਨ ਅਵਿਥਾ ਕਹਸਹ ਵਸਖਆਨੁ ॥ They describe and explain the three states of mind,

ਿੁਰੀਆਵਿਥਾ ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਿੇ ਹਸਰ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ but the fourth state, union with the Lord, is known only through the True Guru. ||1||

You can read but you need a Guru to explain.

ਰਾਮ ਭਿਸਿ ਿੁਰ ਿੇਵਾ ਿਰਣਾ ॥ Through devotional worship of the Lord, and service to the Guru, one swims across.

ਬ੍ਾਹੁਸੜ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਇੋ ਹੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Then, one is not born again, and is not subject to death. ||1||Pause||

ਚਾਸਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਹ ੈਿਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ Everyone speaks of the four great blessings;

ਸਿੰਸਮਰਸਿ ਿਾਿਿ ਪੰਸਡਿ ਮੁਸਖ ਿੋਈ ॥ the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Pandits speak of them as well.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿੁਰ ਅਰਥੁ ਬ੍ੀਚਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ But without the Guru, they do not understand their true significance.

ਮੁਕਸਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਿਸਿ ਹਸਰ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ The treasure of liberation is obtained through devotional worship of the Lord. ||2||

Through Bakthi, devotion to Shabad Guru, Liberation is obtained.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਹਰਦ ੈਵਸਿਆ ਹਸਰ ਿੋਈ ॥ Those, within whose hearts the Lord dwells,

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਭਿਸਿ ਪਰਾਪਸਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ become Gurmukh; they receive the blessings of devotional worship.

ਹਸਰ ਕੀ ਭਿਸਿ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥ Through devotional worship of the Lord, liberation and bliss are obtained.

ਿੁਰਮਸਿ ਪਾਏ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ੁ॥੩॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, supreme ecstasy is obtained. ||3||

Like a lotus one lives in Maya but is attached to Namm, the feet of God.

ਸਜਸਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਿੁਸਰ ਦੇਸਖ ਸਦਖਾਇਆ ॥ One who meets the Guru, beholds Him, and inspires others to behold Him as well.

ਆਿਾ ਮਾਸਹ ਸਨਰਾਿੁ ਬ੍ੁਝਾਇਆ ॥ In the midst of hope, the Guru teaches us to live above hope and desire.

ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਿਰਬ੍ ਿੁਖਦਾਿਾ ॥ He is the Master of the meek, the Giver of peace to all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਸਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਿਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥ Nanak's mind is imbued with the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||12||

Give up your hopes for Maya and you will find the Gate to Liberation.

ਅੰਮਾਵਿ ਮਸਹ ਆਿ ਸਨਵਾਰਹ ੁ॥

On the day of the new moon, give up your hopes.

ਅੰਿਰਜਾਮੀ ਰਾਮ ੁਿਮਾਰਹ ੁ॥

Remember the Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਜੀਵਿ ਪਾਵਹ ੁਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

You shall attain the Gate of Liberation while yet alive.

ਅਨਭਉ ਿਬ੍ਦ ੁਿਿ ੁਸਨਜੁ ਿਾਰ ॥੧॥

You shall come to know the Shabad, the Word of the Fearless Lord, and the essence of your own inner being. ||1||

The gate is small and your Ego is big how will you enter?

ਕਬ੍ੀਰ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਿੰਕੁੜਾ ਰਾਈ ਦਿਵੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ O Kabeer, the gate of liberation is narrow, less than one-tenth of a mustard seed. ਮਨੁ ਿਉ ਮੈਿਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਾ ਸਨਕਸਿਆ ਸਕਉ ਕਸਰ ਜਾਇ ॥ The mind has become as big as an elephant; how can it pass through this gate? ਐਿਾ ਿਸਿਿੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਲੈ ਿਠੁਾ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਾਉ ॥ If one meets such a True Guru, by His Pleasure, He shows His Mercy. ਮੁਕਸਿ ਦਆੁਰਾ ਮੋਕਲਾ ਿਹਜੇ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ Then, the gate of liberation becomes wide open, and the soul easily passes through. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਸਿ ਨੀਕਾ ਨਾਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਿੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ O Nanak, the gate of liberation is very narrow; only the very tiny can pass through. ਹਉਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਅਿਥੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਕਉ ਕਸਰ ਸਵਚ ੁਦੇ ਜਾਇ ॥ Through egotism, the mind has become bloated. How can it pass through? ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਸਮਸਲਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਿਈ ਜੋਸਿ ਰਹੀ ਿਭ ਆਇ ॥ Meeting the True Guru, egotism departs, and one is filled with the Divine Light. ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਿਦਾ ਮੁਕਿੁ ਹੈ ਿਹਜੇ ਰਸਹਆ ਿਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ Then, this being is liberated forever, and it remains absorbed in celestial bliss. ||2||

You need a True Guru to destroy the Ego.

You must do everything under the Guru’s Instruction.

ਮਨੂਆ ਦਹ ਸਦਿ ਿਾਵਦਾ ਓਹੁ ਕੈਿੇ ਹਸਰ ਿੁਣ ਿਾਵੈ ॥ His mind wanders in the ten directions - how can he sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord?

ਇੰਦਰੀ ਸਵਆਸਪ ਰਹੀ ਅਸਿਕਾਈ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਿੁ ਸਨਿ ਿੰਿਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ The sensory organs are totally engrossed in sensuality; sexual desire and anger constantly afflict him. ||1||

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਿਹਜੇ ਿੁਣ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥ Waaho! Waaho! Hail! Hail! Chant His Glorious Praises.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਇਿੁ ਜੁਿ ਮਸਹ ਦੁਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਿੁਰਮਸਿ ਹਸਰ ਰਿੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Name is so difficult to obtain in this age; under Guru's Instruction, drink in the subtle essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਚੀਸਨ ਮਨੁ ਸਨਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਿਾ ਹਸਰ ਕੇ ਿੁਣ ਿਾਵੈ ॥ Remembering the Word of the Shabad, the mind becomes immaculately pure, and then, one sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਿੁਰਮਿੀ ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਿਾ ਸਨਜ ਘਸਰ ਵਾਿਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ Under Guru's Instruction, one comes to understand his own self, and then, he comes to dwell in the home of his inner self. ||2||

Try to read on your own it wont work. Emotional Attachment to Maya is erased with Gurmat.

ਹਸਰ ਸਨਰਮਲੁ ਅਸਿ ਊਜਲਾ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿੁਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ The Lord is Immaculate and Radiantly Bright; without the Guru, He cannot be found.

ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਨਾ ਬ੍ੂਝਈ ਭੇਖੀ ਭਰਸਮ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ He cannot be understood by reading scriptures; the deceitful pretenders are deluded by doubt.

ਿੁਰਮਿੀ ਹਸਰ ਿਦਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਿਨਾ ਹਸਰ ਰਿੁ ਿਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord is always found, and the tongue is permeated with the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ਿੁਰਮਿੀ ਿਹਸਜ ਿੁਭਾਇ ॥ Emotional attachment to Maya is shed with intuitive ease, through the Guru's Teachings.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿਬ੍ਦੈ ਜਿੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਫਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਿਈ ਖਾਇ ॥ Without the Shabad, the world wanders lost in pain. The self-willed manmukh is consumed.

ਿਬ੍ਦੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਈਐ ਿਬ੍ਦੇ ਿਸਚ ਿਮਾਇ ॥੪॥ Through the Shabad, meditate on the Naam; through the Shabad, you shall merge in Truth. ||4||

The Shabad is also called Guru.

ਮਾਇਆ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਿ ਸਫਰਸਹ ਿਮਾਸਿ ਨ ਲਿੈ ਿੁਭਾਇ ॥ The Siddhas wander around, deluded by Maya; they are not absorbed in the Samaadhi of the Lord's Sublime Love.

ਿੀਨੇ ਲੋਅ ਸਵਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਅਸਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ The three worlds are permeated by Maya; they are totally covered by it.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿੁਰ ਮਕੁਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਦੁਸਬ੍ਿਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥ Without the Guru, liberation is not attained, and the double-mindedness of Maya does not go away. ||5||

ਮਾਇਆ ਸਕਿ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਕਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ What is called Maya? What does Maya do?

ਦੁਸਖ ਿੁਸਖ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਬ੍ਿ ੁਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ These beings are bound by pleasure and pain; they do their deeds in egotism.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿਬ੍ਦੈ ਭਰਮ ੁਨ ਚਕੂਈ ਨਾ ਸਵਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥ Without the Shabad, doubt is not dispelled, and egotism is not eliminated from within. ||6||

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਪਰੀਿੀ ਭਿਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿਬ੍ਦੈ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ Without love, there is no devotional worship. Without the Shabad, no one finds acceptance.

Benefits of the Guru.

ਜਾਸਮ ਿੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਸਲ ਿਨਸਹ ਸਕਆ ਿਾਰਵੁ ਸਦਜਇ ॥ One who has the Guru on his side - how could he be proud of his wealth?

ਜਾਸਮ ਿੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਸਲ ਲਖ ਬ੍ਾਹੇ ਸਕਆ ਸਕਜਇ ॥ One who has the Guru on his side - what would hundreds of thousands of supporters do for him?

ਜਾਸਮ ਿੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਸਲ ਸਿਆਨ ਅਰੁ ਸਿਆਨ ਅਨਨ ਪਸਰ ॥ One who has the Guru on his side, does not depend on anyone else for spiritual wisdom and meditation.

ਜਾਸਮ ਿੁਰੂ ਹੋਇ ਵਸਲ ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਿਾਖੀ ਿ ੁਿਚਹ ਘਸਰ ॥ One who has the Guru on his side contemplates the Shabad and the Teachings, and abides in the Home of Truth.

ਜੋ ਿੁਰੂ ਿੁਰੂ ਅਸਹਸਨਸਿ ਜਪੈ ਦਾਿੁ ਭਟ ੁਬ੍ੇਨਸਿ ਕਹੈ ॥ The Lord's humble slave and poet utters this prayer: whoever chants to the Guru night and day,

ਜੋ ਿੁਰੂ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਦ ਮਸਹ ਿਰੈ ਿੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਹ ਥੇ ਰਹੈ ॥੩॥੭॥ whoever enshrines the Name of the Guru within his heart, is rid of both birth and death. ||3||7||

ਿੁਰ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਘੋਰੁ ਅੰਿਾਰੁ ਿੁਰੂ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿਮਝ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ Without the Guru, there is utter darkness; without the Guru, understanding does not come.

ਿੁਰ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿੁਰਸਿ ਨ ਸਿਸਿ ਿੁਰੂ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਮਕੁਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ Without the Guru, there is no intuitive awareness or success; without the Guru, there is no liberation.

ਿੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਿਚੁ ਬ੍ੀਚਾਰੁ ਿੁਰੂ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ So make Him your Guru, and contemplate the Truth; make Him your Guru, O my mind.

ਿੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਿਬ੍ਦ ਿਪੁੰ ਨ ਅਘਨ ਕਟਸਹ ਿਭ ਿੇਰੇ ॥ Make Him your Guru, who is embellished and exalted in the Word of the Shabad; all your sins shall be washed away.

ਿੁਰੁ ਨਯਸਣ ਬ੍ਯਸਣ ਿੁਰੁ ਿੁਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਿੁਰੂ ਿਸਿ ਕਸਵ ਨਲ੍੍ ਕਸਹ ॥ So speaks NALL the poet: with your eyes, make Him your Guru; with the words you speak, make Him your Guru, your True Guru.

ਸਜਸਨ ਿੁਰੂ ਨ ਦੇਸਖਅਉ ਨਹੁ ਕੀਅਉ ਿ ੇਅਕਯਥ ਿੰਿਾਰ ਮਸਹ ॥੪॥੮॥ Those who have not seen the Guru, who have not made Him their Guru, are useless in this world. ||4||8||

Seava of Guru is listening to Shabad.

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਿਸਿਿੁਰੂ ਸਮਲਾਏ ॥ By His Mercy, we meet the True Guru.

ਿੇਵਾ ਿੁਰਸਿ ਿਬ੍ਸਦ ਸਚਿੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ Center your awareness on seva-selfless service-and focus your consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਸਰ ਿਦਾ ਿੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੧॥ Subduing your ego, you shall find a lasting peace, and your emotional attachment to Maya will be dispelled. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਬ੍ਸਲਹਾਰਸਣਆ ॥ I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, I am totally devoted to the True Guru.

ਿੁਰਮਿੀ ਪਰਿਾਿੁ ਹੋਆ ਜੀ ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਹਸਰ ਿੁਣ ਿਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, the Divine Light has dawned; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. ||1||Pause||

ਿਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਖੋਜੇ ਿਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਏ ॥ Search your body and mind, and find the Name.

ਿਾਵਿੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਸਕ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ Restrain your wandering mind, and keep it in check.

ਿੁਰ ਕੀ ਬ੍ਾਣੀ ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਿਾਵੈ ਿਹਜੇ ਭਿਸਿ ਕਰਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੨॥ Night and day, sing the Songs of the Guru's Bani; worship the Lord with intuitive devotion. ||2||

ਇਿੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਸਰ ਵਿਿੁ ਅਿੰਖਾ ॥ Within this body are countless objects.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਿਾਚੁ ਸਮਲੈ ਿਾ ਵਖੇਾ ॥ The Gurmukh attains Truth, and comes to see them.

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਿਵੈ ਮੁਕਿਾ ਅਨਹਦ ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੩॥ Beyond the nine gates, the Tenth Gate is found, and liberation is obtained. The Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates. ||3||

ਿਚਾ ਿਾਸਹਬ੍ੁ ਿਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥ True is the Master, and True is His Name.

ਿੁਰ ਪਰਿਾਦੀ ਮੰਸਨ ਵਿਾਈ ॥ By Guru's Grace, He comes to dwell within the mind.

ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਿਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਸਿ ਰਾਿਾ ਦਸਰ ਿਚੈ ਿੋਝੀ ਪਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੪॥ Night and day, remain attuned to the Lord's Love forever, and you shall obtain understanding in the True Court. ||4||

ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰ ਨ ਕੀ ਿਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ Those who do not understand the nature of sin and virtue

ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਿੀ ਭਰਸਮ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥ are attached to duality; they wander around deluded.

ਅਸਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਿਾ ਮਿੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਫਸਰ ਸਫਸਰ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੫॥ The ignorant and blind people do not know the way; they come and go in reincarnation over and over again. ||5||

ਿੁਰ ਿੇਵਾ ਿੇ ਿਦਾ ਿੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ Serving the Guru, I have found eternal peace;

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਸਕ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥ my ego has been silenced and subdued.

ਿੁਰ ਿਾਖੀ ਸਮਸਟਆ ਅੰਸਿਆਰਾ ਬ੍ਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਖੁਲਾਵਸਣਆ ॥੬॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, the darkness has been dispelled, and the heavy doors have been opened. ||6||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਸਰ ਮੰਸਨ ਵਿਾਇਆ ॥ Subduing my ego, I have enshrined the Lord within my mind.

ਿੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਿਦਾ ਸਚਿੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ I focus my consciousness on the Guru's Feet forever.

ਿੁਰ ਸਕਰਪਾ ਿੇ ਮਨੁ ਿਨੁ ਸਨਰਮਲੁ ਸਨਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਵਸਣਆ ॥੭॥ By Guru's Grace, my mind and body are immaculate and pure; I meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||7||

ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਿਭੁ ਿੁਿੈ ਿਾਈ ॥ From birth to death, everything is for You.

ਸਜਿੁ ਬ੍ਖਿੇ ਸਿਿੁ ਦੇ ਵਸਡਆਈ ॥ You bestow greatness upon those whom You have forgiven.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਇ ਿਦਾ ਿੂੰ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਿਵਾਰਸਣਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੨॥ O Nanak, meditating forever on the Naam, you shall be blessed in both birth and death. ||8||1||2||

Do Seva to Remove Ego and Enter to the gate of God.

ਿੁਰ ਕੀ ਿੇਵਾ ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ In the Guru's service is reflection upon the Shabad.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਿਾਰੁ ॥੭॥ Subduing ego, practice pure actions. ||7||

ਜਿੁ ਸਬ੍ਨਿਿ ਹਮ ਦੇਸਖਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism.

ਿੁਰ ਿੇਵਾ ਪਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਿਚੁ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥ Only by serving the Guru is God obtained, and the true gate of liberation found. ||4||

Destroy Ego through Seva

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਆਇਆ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਿਇਆ ॥ In ego they come, and in ego they go.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਜੰਸਮਆ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਮੁਆ ॥ In ego they are born, and in ego they die.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਸਦਿਾ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਲਇਆ ॥ In ego they give, and in ego they take.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਖਸਟਆ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਿਇਆ ॥ In ego they earn, and in ego they lose.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਿਸਚਆਰੁ ਕੂਸੜਆਰੁ ॥ In ego they become truthful or false.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰ ਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ In ego they reflect on virtue and sin.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਨਰਸਕ ਿੁਰਸਿ ਅਵਿਾਰੁ ॥ In ego they go to heaven or hell.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਹਿੈ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਰੋਵੈ ॥ In ego they laugh, and in ego they weep.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਭਰੀਐ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਿੋਵੈ ॥ In ego they become dirty, and in ego they are washed clean.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਜਾਿੀ ਸਜਨਿੀ ਖਵੋੈ ॥ In ego they lose social status and class.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਮਰੂਖੁ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥ In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.

ਮੋਖ ਮਕੁਸਿ ਕੀ ਿਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.

ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਸਵਸਚ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਸਰ ਕਸਰ ਜੰਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ Living in ego, mortal beings are created.

ਹਉਮੈ ਬ੍ੂਝੈ ਿਾ ਦਰੁ ਿੂਝੈ ॥ When one understands ego, then the Lord's gate is known.

ਸਿਆਨ ਸਵਹੂਣਾ ਕਸਥ ਕਸਥ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ Without spiritual wisdom, they babble and argue.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਲਖੀਐ ਲੇਖ ੁ॥ O Nanak, by the Lord's Command, destiny is recorded.

ਜੇਹਾ ਵੇਖਸਹ ਿਹੇਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੧॥ As the Lord sees us, so are we seen. ||1||

Teach your mind to Serve renounce hypocrisy.

ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬ੍ੋਿਹੁ ਬ੍ੂਝਹੁ ਿੋਈ ॥ Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.

ਲੋਕ ਿਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਿੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਿਮਝਹੁ ਿਦਾ ਿੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥ The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||

ਮਨਮੁਸਖ ਡੰਫੁ ਬ੍ਹੁਿੁ ਚਿੁਰਾਈ ॥ The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.

ਜੋ ਸਕਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਿੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.

ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥ They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬ੍ਹੁਿੁ ਅਸਭਮਾਨਾ ॥ The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.

ਬ੍ਿ ਸਜਉ ਲਾਇ ਬ੍ਹੈ ਸਨਿ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥ They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.

ਜਸਮ ਪਕਸੜਆ ਿਬ੍ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਿਾਨਾ ॥੬॥ Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿਸਿਿੁਰ ਿੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.

ਿੁਰ ਪਰਿਾਦੀ ਸਮਲੈ ਹਸਰ ਿੋਈ ॥ By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.

ਿੁਰੁ ਦਾਿਾ ਜੁਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥ The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਜਾਸਿ ਪਸਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਸਡਆਈ ॥ For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.

ਿਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਿਰੀ ਸਬ੍ਦਾਸਰ ਿਵਾਈ ॥ Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਿੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥ O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2||

Benefits of Guru’s system

ਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਿਸਨ ਮਕੁਸਿ ਿਸਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ The Guru's system is the way to liberation.

ਿਾਚਾ ਆਸਪ ਵਿੈ ਮਸਨ ਿੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The True Lord Himself comes to dwell in the mind. ||1||Pause||

ਿੁਰ ਦਰਿਸਨ ਉਿਰੈ ਿੰਿਾਰਾ ॥ Through the Guru's system, the world is saved,

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਲਾਏ ਭਾਉ ਸਪਆਰਾ ॥ if it is embraced with love and affection.

ਭਾਉ ਸਪਆਰਾ ਲਾਏ ਸਵਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥ How rare is that person who truly loves the Guru's Way.

ਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਿਸਨ ਿਦਾ ਿੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥ Through the Guru's system, everlasting peace is obtained. ||2||

ਿੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਿਸਨ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ Through the Guru's system, the Door of Salvation is obtained.

ਿਸਿਿੁਰੁ ਿੇਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਿਾਿਾਰੁ ॥ Serving the True Guru, one's family is saved.

ਸਨਿੁਰੇ ਕਉ ਿਸਿ ਕਾਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ There is no salvation for those who have no Guru.

ਅਵਿਸਣ ਮੁਠੇ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹੀ ॥੩॥ Beguiled by worthless sins, they are struck down. ||3||

By your Seva you will be Jeevan Mukhath.

ਜੀਵਿ ਮੁਕਿ ਿੁਰਮਿੀ ਲਾਿੇ ॥ Those who are attached to the Guru's Teachings, are Jivan-mukta, liberated while yet alive.

ਹਸਰ ਕੀ ਭਿਸਿ ਅਨਸਦਨੁ ਿਦ ਜਾਿੇ ॥ They remain forever awake and aware night and day, in devotional worship of the Lord.

ਿਸਿਿੁਰੁ ਿੇਵਸਹ ਆਪੁ ਿਵਾਇ ॥ They serve the True Guru, and eradicate their self-conceit.

ਹਉ ਸਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਿਦ ਲਾਿਉ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ I fall at the feet of such humble beings. ||1||

ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਿਦਾ ਹਸਰ ਕੇ ਿੁਣ ਿਾਈ ॥ Constantly singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I live.

ਿੁਰ ਕਾ ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਿੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਹਸਰ ਕ ੈਨਾਸਮ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਿਸਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Word of the Guru's Shabad is such totally sweet elixir. Through the Name of the Lord, I have attained the state of liberation. ||1||Pause||

Make God your friend.

ਅਪਨੇ ਲੋਭ ਕਉ ਕੀਨੋ ਮੀਿੁ ॥ For their own advantage, they make God their friend.

ਿਿਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਪਦੁ ਦੀਿੁ ॥੧॥ He fulfills all their desires, and blesses them with the state of liberation. ||1||

ਐਿਾ ਮੀਿੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਿਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ Everyone should make Him such a friend.

ਜਾ ਿੇ ਸਬ੍ਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ No one goes away empty-handed from Him. ||1||Pause||

ਅਪੁਨੈ ਿੁਆਇ ਸਰਦ ੈਲੈ ਿਾਸਰਆ ॥ For their own purposes, they enshrine the Lord in the heart;

ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਰੋਿ ਿਿਲ ਸਬ੍ਦਾਸਰਆ ॥੨॥ all pain, suffering and disease are taken away. ||2||

ਰਿਨਾ ਿੀਿੀ ਬ੍ੋਲਿ ਰਾਮ ॥ Their tongues learn the habit of chanting the Lord's Name, ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਿਿਲੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥ and all their works are brought to perfection. ||3|| ਅਸਨਕ ਬ੍ਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਸਲਹਾਰਾ ॥ So many times, Nanak is a sacrifice to Him; ਿਫਲ ਦਰਿਨੁ ਿੋਸਬੰ੍ਦੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੭੯॥੧੪੮॥ fruitful is the Blessed Vision, the Darshan, of my Lord of the Universe. ||4||79||148||

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਿੰਿੀ ਬ੍ਟਵਾਰੇ ॥ Twenty-four hours a day, the highway robbers are my companions.

ਕਸਰ ਸਕਰਪਾ ਪਰਸਭ ਲਏ ਸਨਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ Granting His Grace, God has driven them away. ||1||

ਐਿਾ ਹਸਰ ਰਿੁ ਰਮਹੁ ਿਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ Everyone should dwell on the Sweet Name of such a Lord.

ਿਰਬ੍ ਕਲਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਭੁ ਿੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ God is overflowing with all power. ||1||Pause||

ਜਨ ਕੋ ਪਰਭੁ ਿੰਿੇ ਅਿਨੇਹੁ ॥ God's humble servant is in love with Him.

ਿਾਜਨੋ ਿੂ ਮੀਿੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰਸਹ ਿੇਰ ੈਿਭੁ ਕੇਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ You are my Friend, my very best Friend; everything is in Your Home. ||1||Pause||

ਮਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਿਉ ਿਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਿਉ ਿਨੁ ਲਖਮੀ ਿੁਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥ I beg for honor, I beg for strength; please bless me with wealth, property and children. ||1||

ਮੁਕਸਿ ਜੁਿਸਿ ਭੁਿਸਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਪਰਮ ਸਨਿਾਨ ॥ You are the Technology of liberation, the Way to worldly success, the Perfect Lord of Supreme Bliss, the Transcendent Treasure.

ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਿਸਿ ਸਨਹਾਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਿਦਾ ਿਦਾ ਕੁਰਬ੍ਾਨ ॥੨॥੪॥੪੯॥ In the Fear of God and loving devotion, Nanak is exalted and enraptured, forever and ever a sacrifice to Him. ||2||4||49||

How Waheguru treats the one who is devoted to Him.

ਦਾਿ ਅਸਨੰਨ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਨਜ ਰਪੂ ॥ Says God: my slave is devoted only to me; he is in my very image.

ਦਰਿਨ ਸਨਮਖ ਿਾਪ ਿਰਈ ਮੋਚਨ ਪਰਿਿ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਰਹ ਕਪੂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The sight of him, even for an instant, cures the three fevers; his touch brings liberation from the deep dark pit of household affairs. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਰੀ ਬ੍ਾਂਿੀ ਭਿਿ ੁਛਡਾਵੈ ਬ੍ਾਂਿੈ ਭਿਿੁ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ਮੋਸਹ ॥ The devotee can release anyone from my bondage, but I cannot release anyone from his.

ਏਕ ਿਮੈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਿਸਹ ਬ੍ਾਂਿੈ ਿਉ ਫੁਸਨ ਮੋ ਪੈ ਜਬ੍ਾਬ੍ੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ If, at any time, he grabs and binds me, even then, I cannot protest. ||1||

ਮੈ ਿੁਨ ਬੰ੍ਿ ਿਿਲ ਕੀ ਜੀਵਸਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਜੀਵਸਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਿ ॥ I am bound by virtue; I am the Life of all. My slaves are my very life.

ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਐਿੀ ਿੈਿੋ ਿਾ ਕੈ ਪਰੇਮ ਪਰਿਾਿ ॥੨॥੩॥ Says Naam Dayv, as is the quality of his soul, so is my love which illuminates him. ||2||3||

Your own way is a worthless religion.

ਜਾ ਮੈ ਭਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ There is no meditation on the Lord within him.

ਸਿਹ ਨਰ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥ ੁਖੋਇਆ ਯਹ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ That man wastes his life uselessly - keep this in mind. ||1||Pause||

ਿੀਰਥ ਕਰੈ ਬ੍ਰਿ ਫੁਸਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਹ ਮਨੂਆ ਬ੍ਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੋ ॥ He bathes at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and adheres to fasts, but he has no control over his mind.

ਸਨਹਫਲ ਿਰਮੁ ਿਾਸਹ ਿਮੁ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਿਾਚੁ ਕਹਿ ਮੈ ਯਾ ਕਉ ॥੧॥ Know that such religion is useless to him. I speak the Truth for his sake. ||1||

ਜੈਿੇ ਪਾਹਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਸਹ ਰਾਸਖਓ ਭਦੇੈ ਨਾਸਹ ਸਿਹ ਪਾਨੀ ॥ It's like a stone, kept immersed in water; still, the water does not penetrate it. ਿੈਿੇ ਹੀ ਿੁਮ ਿਾਸਹ ਪਛਾਨਹੁ ਭਿਸਿ ਹੀਨ ਜੋ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ So, understand it: that mortal being who lacks devotional worship is just like that. ||2|| ਕਲ ਮੈ ਮਕੁਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਿ ੇਪਾਵਿ ਿੁਰੁ ਯਹ ਭਦੇੁ ਬ੍ਿਾਵੈ ॥ In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, liberation comes from the Naam. The Guru has revealed this secret. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਿੋਈ ਨਰ ੁਿਰੂਆ ਜ ੋਪਰਭ ਕੇ ਿੁਨ ਿਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੩॥ Says Nanak, he alone is a great man, who sings the Praises of God. ||3||3||

Through a false guru no one met God

ਘਰ ਦਰ ਸਫਸਰ ਥਾਕੀ ਬ੍ਹਿੁੇਰੇ ॥ Wandering to countless doorsteps and homes, I have grown weary. ਜਾਸਿ ਅਿੰਖ ਅੰਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਰੇੇ ॥ My incarnations are countless, without limit.

ਕੇਿੇ ਮਾਿ ਸਪਿਾ ਿੁਿ ਿੀਆ ॥ I have had so many mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. ਕੇਿੇ ਿੁਰ ਚਲੇੇ ਫੁਸਨ ਹੂਆ ॥ I have had so many gurus and disciples.

ਕਾਚੇ ਿੁਰ ਿੇ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਹਆੂ ॥ Through a false guru, liberation is not found.

ਕੇਿੀ ਨਾਸਰ ਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਿਮਾਸਲ ॥ There are so many brides of the One Husband Lord - consider this. ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਪਰਭ ਨਾਸਲ ॥ The Gurmukh dies, and lives with God.

ਦਹ ਸਦਿ ਿੂਸਿ ਘਰੈ ਮਸਹ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ Searching in the ten directions, I found Him within my own home. ਮੇਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਿਸਿਿੁਰੂ ਸਮਲਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥ I have met Him; the True Guru has led me to meet Him. ||21||

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਿਾਵੈ ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਬ੍ੋਲੈ ॥ The Gurmukh sings, and the Gurmukh speaks.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਿੋਸਲ ਿੋੁਲਾਵੈ ਿਲੈੋ ॥ The Gurmukh evaluates the value of the Lord, and inspires others to evaluate Him as well.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਨਿੰਿੁ ॥ The Gurmukh comes and goes without fear.

ਪਰਹਸਰ ਮੈਲ ੁਜਲਾਇ ਕਲੰਕੁ ॥ His filth is taken away, and his stains are burnt off.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਨਾਦ ਬ੍ੇਦ ਬ੍ੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ The Gurmukh contemplates the sound current of the Naad for his Vedas.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥ The Gurmukh's cleansing bath is the performance of good deeds.

ਿੁਰਮੁਸਖ ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਅੰਸਮਰਿ ੁਹੈ ਿਾਰੁ ॥ For the Gurmukh, the Shabad is the most excellent Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਨਕ ਿੁਰਮਸੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰ ੁ॥੨੨॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over. ||22||

ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚੀਿੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਠਾਇ ॥ The fickle consciousness does not remain stable.

ਚੋਰੀ ਸਮਰਿੁ ਅੰਿੂਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥ The deer secretly nibbles at the green sprouts.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਿਾਰੇ ਚੀਿ ॥ One who enshrines the Lord's lotus feet in his heart and consciousness ਸਚਰੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਚੇਿਨੁ ਸਨਿ ਨੀਿ ॥ lives long, always remembering the Lord.

ਸਚੰਿਿ ਹੀ ਦੀਿੈ ਿਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ Everyone has worries and cares.

ਚੇਿਸਹ ਏਕੁ ਿਹੀ ਿੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ He alone finds peace, who thinks of the One Lord. ਸਚਸਿ ਵਿੈ ਰਾਚੈ ਹਸਰ ਨਾਇ ॥ When the Lord dwells in the consciousness, and one is absorbed in the Lord's Name, ਮੁਕਸਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਸਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਸਰ ਜਾਇ ॥੨੩॥ one is liberated, and returns home with honor. ||23||

ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹ ਖੁਲੈ ਇਕ ਿੰਸਿ ॥ The body falls apart, when one knot is untied.

ਛੇਆ ਸਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਜਸਿ ਹੰਸਿ ॥ Behold, the world is on the decline; it will be totally destroyed. ਿੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਿਮ ਕਸਰ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ Only one who looks alike upon sunshine and shade ਬੰ੍ਿਨ ਕਾਸਟ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਘਸਰ ਆਣੈ ॥ has his bonds shattered; he is liberated and returns home. ਛਾਇਆ ਛੂਛੀ ਜਿਿੁ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥ Maya is empty and petty; she has defrauded the world. ਸਲਸਖਆ ਸਕਰਿੁ ਿੁਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥ Such destiny is pre-ordained by past actions. ਛੀਜੈ ਜੋਬ੍ਨੁ ਜਰੂਆ ਸਿਸਰ ਕਾਲੁ ॥ Youth is wasting away; old age and death hover above the head.

Don’t seek liberation from anyone but the Guru.

ਸਫਸਰ ਸਫਸਰ ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਿੈ ਕਊਆ ॥ Again and again, the crow falls into the trap. ਸਫਸਰ ਪਛੁਿਾਨਾ ਅਬ੍ ਸਕਆ ਹਆੂ ॥ Then he regrets it, but what can he do now? ਫਾਥਾ ਚੋਿ ਚਿੁੈ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ੂਝੈ ॥ Even though he is trapped, he pecks at the food; he does not understand. ਿਿਿੁਰੁ ਸਮਲੈ ਿ ਆਖੀ ਿਝੂੈ ॥ If he meets the True Guru, then he sees with his eyes. ਸਜਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਫਾਥੀ ਜਮ ਜਾਸਲ ॥ Like a fish, he is caught in the noose of death. ਸਵਣੁ ਿਰੁ ਦਾਿੇ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਭਾਸਲ ॥ Do not seek liberation from anyone else, except the Guru, the Great Giver. ਸਫਸਰ ਸਫਸਰ ਆਵੈ ਸਫਸਰ ਸਫਸਰ ਜਾਇ ॥ Over and over again, he comes; over and over again, he goes. ਇਕ ਰੰਸਿ ਰਚੈ ਰਹੈ ਸਲਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ Be absorbed in love for the One Lord, and remain lovingly focused on Him. ਇਵ ਛੂਟ ੈਸਫਸਰ ਫਾਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩੯॥ In this way you shall be saved, and you shall not fall into the trap again. ||39||

ਮਾਂਿਉ ਰਾਮ ਿੇ ਿਸਭ ਥੋਕ ॥ I beg only from the Lord for all things.

ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕਉ ਜਾਚਿ ਿਰਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਸਨ ਮੋਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ I would hesitate to beg from other people. Remembering God in meditation, liberation is obtained. ||1||Pause||

ਘੋਖੇ ਮੁਸਨ ਜਨ ਸਿੰਸਮਰਸਿ ਪੁਰਾਨਾਂ ਬ੍ੇਦ ਪੁਕਾਰਸਹ ਘੋਖ ॥ I have studied with the silent sages, and carefully read the Simritees, the Puraanas and the Vedas; they all proclaim that,

ਸਕਰਪਾ ਸਿੰਿੁ ਿਸੇਵ ਿਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਦੋਵੈ ਿੁਹੇਲੇ ਲੋਕ ॥੧॥ by serving the Lord, the ocean of mercy, Truth is obtained, and both this world and the next are embellished. ||1||

ਆਨ ਅਚਾਰ ਸਬ੍ਉਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਜੇਿੇ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਹਸਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਫੋਕ ॥ All other rituals and customs are useless, without remembering the Lord in meditation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭੈ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਮਸਲ ਿਾਿੂ ਸਬ੍ਨਿੇ ਿੋਕ ॥੨॥੧੯॥੫੦॥ O Nanak, the fear of birth and death has been removed; meeting the Holy Saint, sorrow is dispelled. ||2||19||50 ll

Don’t be fooled by the fakers.

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ The man of false mind practices falsehood.

ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਸਫਰੈ ਿਪਾ ਿਦਾਵੈ ॥ He runs after Maya, and yet pretends to be a man of disciplined meditation.

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਿਸਭ ਿੀਰਥ ਿਹੈ ॥ Deluded by doubt, he visits all the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਓਹੁ ਿਪਾ ਕੈਿੇ ਪਰਮ ਿਸਿ ਲਹੈ ॥ How can such a man of disciplined meditation attain the supreme status?

ਿੁਰ ਪਰਿਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਿਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ By Guru's Grace, one lives the Truth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਿੋ ਿਪਾ ਮੋਖੰਿਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, such a man of disciplined meditation attains liberation. ||1|

ਰਾਜੇ ਿਰਮੁ ਕਰਸਹ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥ The kings acted righteously only out of self-interest.

ਆਿਾ ਬੰ੍ਿੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ Tied to hopes of reward, they gave to charities.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ Without the Lord's Name, liberation did not come, although they grew weary of performing rituals. ||9||

ਕਰਮ ਿਰਮ ਕਸਰ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਮੰਿਾਹੀ ॥ Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation,

ਮੁਕਸਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਿਬ੍ਸਦ ਿਲਾਹੀ ॥ but the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad.

ਸਬ੍ਨੁ ਿੁਰ ਿਬ੍ਦੈ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਸਰ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਿਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned.

ਿੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਿਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ They alone find release, who practice deeds of Truth.

ਅਸਹਸਨਸਿ ਭਿਸਿ ਰਿੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬ੍ਸਣ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ Day and night, the devotees remain imbued with contemplative meditation; they become just like their Lord and Master. ||11||

When you have a real Guru don’t be fooled.

ਜਾਿ ਨਜਾਸਿ ਦੇਸਖ ਮਿ ਭਰਮਹੁ ਿੁਕ ਜਨਕ ਪਿੀਂ ਲਸਿ ਸਿਆਵੈਿੋ ॥ Do not be fooled by appearances of high and low social class. Suk Dayv bowed at the feet of Janak, and meditated.

ਜੂਠਨ ਜੂਸਠ ਪਈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਸਰ ਸਖਨੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਸਿਲੁ ਨ ਡੁਲਾਵੈਿੋ ॥੭॥ Even though Janak threw his leftovers and garbage on Suk Dayv's head, his mind did not waver, even for an instant. ||7||

ਿੁਰੁ ਿਸਿਿੁਰੁ ਿੁਰੁ ਿੋਸਵਦੁ ਪੁਸਛ ਸਿਸਮਰਸਿ ਕੀਿਾ ਿਹੀ ॥ The Guru, the True Guru, the Guru is the Lord of the Universe. Go ahead and consult the Simritees - they will confirm this.

ਸਿਸਮਰਸਿ ਿਾਿਿਰ ਿਭਨੀ ਿਹੀ ਕੀਿਾ ਿੁਸਕ ਪਰਸਹਲਾਸਦ ਿਰੀਰਾਸਮ ਕਸਰ ਿੁਰ ਿੋਸਵਦੁ ਸਿਆਇਆ ॥ The Simritees and the Shaastras all confirm that Suk Dayv and Prahlaad meditated on the Guru, the Lord of the Universe, and knew Him as the Supreme Lord.

ਕਾਲੁ ਸਬ੍ਕਾਲੁ ਭਏ ਦਵੇਾਨੇ ॥ Birth and death are meaningless, for those

ਿਬ੍ਦੁ ਿਹਜ ਰਿੁ ਅੰਿਸਰ ਮਾਨੇ ॥ who enjoy the sublime celestial essence of the Shabad within their minds.

ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਸਿਰਪਸਿ ਵਰਦਾਿਾ ਭਿਸਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਸਨ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ He Himself is the Giver of liberation, satisfaction and blessings, to those devotees who love Him in their minds. ||15||

Liberation is when you are close to God and in Service of God.

ਜਉ ਿੁਮ੍ਹ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੂਸਰ ਕਰਿ ਹਉ ਿਉ ਿੁਮ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਬ੍ਿਾਵਹੁ ॥ If You keep me far away from You, then tell me, what is liberation?

ਏਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਹੋਇ ਰਸਹਓ ਿਿਲ ਮਸਹ ਅਬ੍ ਕੈਿੇ ਭਰਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ The One has many forms, and is contained within all; how can I be fooled now? ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਿਾਸਰ ਕਹਾਂ ਲੈ ਜਈ ਹੈ ॥ O Lord, where will You take me, to save me?

ਿੋਿਉ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਕਹਾ ਦੇਉ ਕੈਿੀ ਕਸਰ ਪਰਿਾਦੁ ਮੋਸਹ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Tell me where, and what sort of liberation shall You give me? By Your Grace, I have already obtained it. ||1||Pause||

ਿਾਰਨ ਿਰਨੁ ਿਬ੍ੈ ਲਿੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਬ੍ ਲਿੁ ਿਿੁ ਨ ਜਾਸਨਆ ॥ People talk of salvation and being saved, as long as they do not understand the essence of reality.

ਅਬ੍ ਿਉ ਸਬ੍ਮਲ ਭਏ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਸਹ ਕਸਹ ਕਬ੍ੀਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਸਨਆ ॥੨॥੫॥ I have now become pure within my heart, says Kabeer, and my mind is pleased and appeased. ||2||5||

Do not seek liberation. Seek Naam.

ਅੰਸਮਰਿਾ ਸਪਰਅ ਬ੍ਚਨ ਿੁਹਾਰੇ ॥ O Beloved, Your Words are Ambrosial Nectar.

ਅਸਿ ਿੁੰ ਦਰ ਮਨਮਹੋਨ ਸਪਆਰੇ ਿਭਹੂ ਮਸਿ ਸਨਰਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ O supremely beautiful Enticer, O Beloved, You are among all, and yet distinct from all. ||1||Pause||

ਰਾਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮੁਕਸਿ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮਸਨ ਪਰੀਸਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲਾਰੇ ॥ I do not seek power, and I do not seek liberation. My mind is in love with Your Lotus Feet.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਹੇਿ ਸਿਿ ਮੁਸਨ ਇੰਦਰਾ ਮੋਸਹ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹੀ ਦਰਿਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ Brahma, Shiva, the Siddhas, the silent sages and Indra - I seek only the Blessed Vision of my Lord and Master's Darshan. ||1||

ਦੀਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਇਓ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਿਰਸਨ ਪਸਰਓ ਿੰਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥ I have come, helpless, to Your Door, O Lord Master; I am exhausted - I seek the Sanctuary of the Saints.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਭ ਸਮਲੇ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਿੀਿਲ ਸਬ੍ਿਿਾਰੇ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੯॥ Says Nanak, I have met my Enticing Lord God; my mind is cooled and soothed - it blossoms forth in joy.

You got this Body to meet God. Now do it.

ਹਸਰ ਚੋਲੀ ਦੇਹ ਿਵਾਰੀ ਕਸਿ ਪਿੈੀ ਭਿਸਿ ਕਸਰ ॥ The Lord has adorned the coat of the body; He has embroidered it with devotional worship.

ਹਸਰ ਪਾਟੁ ਲਿਾ ਅਸਿਕਾਈ ਬ੍ਹੁ ਬ੍ਹੁ ਸਬ੍ਸਿ ਭਾਸਿ ਕਸਰ ॥ The Lord has woven His silk into it, in so many ways and fashions.

ਕੋਈ ਬ੍ੂਝੈ ਬ੍ੂਝਣਹਾਰਾ ਅੰਿਸਰ ਸਬ੍ਬ੍ੇਕੁ ਕਸਰ ॥ How rare is that man of understanding, who understands, and deliberates within.

ਿੋ ਬ੍ੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਸਬ੍ਬ੍ੇਕੁ ਸਜਿੁ ਬ੍ੁਝਾਏ ਆਸਪ ਹਸਰ ॥ He alone understands these deliberations, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਵਚਾਰਾ ਿੁਰਮਸੁਖ ਹਸਰ ਿਸਿ ਹਸਰ ॥੧੧॥ Poor servant Nanak speaks: the Gurmukhs know the Lord, the Lord is True. ||11||

This should be your prayer

ਆਪੁਨੀ ਭਿਸਿ ਸਨਬ੍ਾਸਹ ॥ Please help me sustain my devotion.

ਠਾਕਰੁ ਆਇਓ ਆਸਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ O Lord Master, I have come to You. ||1||Pause||

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹਇੋ ਿਕਾਰਥੁ ਸਹਰਦੈ ਚਰਨ ਬ੍ਿਾਸਹ ॥੧॥ With the wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, life becomes fruitful. Lord, please place Your Feet within my heart. ||1||

ਏਹ ਮੁਕਿਾ ਏਹ ਜੁਿਿਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਿੰਿ ਿੰਿਾਸਹ ॥੨॥ This is liberation, and this is the best way of life; please, keep me in the Society of the Saints. ||2||

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਆਵਉ ਿਹਸਜ ਿਮਾਵਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਸਰ ਿੁਨ ਿਾਸਹ ॥੩॥੬॥੧੪੬॥ Meditating on the Naam, I am absorbed in celestial peace; O Nanak, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||6||146||
