Informação em movimento• When people share information
it flows from person to person From one individual to an
audience, and among members of a group
• Through conversation, instruction, example and observation
• Through mass media and personal media Face-to-face and via written
texts, databases, computer-mediated communication
• Social networks support this information flow Just as roads, bus routes, and
air travel routes support the flow of people
• Examines how social neworks facilitate or inhibit information flow
• With attention to social networks for information exchange, learning, and knowledge construction
• Outline Defining ‘information’ Social network basics Research on infornation
and social networks
redes sociais
Redes de informação• Exchanges of
intangibles Data, Information,
Knowledge, Wisdom• Via conversations,
lectures, radio, TV, books, magazines, pamphlets Face-to-face, phone,
email, chat, online classes, social software, blogs
• For any topic, purpose Work, learning,
knowledge building, friendship, play, kinship
• Troca de intangíveis Dados, informação,
conhecimento, sabedoria• Via conversas, leituras,
radio, TV, revistas, panfletos Face a face, aulas
online, software social, blogs
• Para qualquer assunto, objetivo Trabalho, aprendizado,
construção de conhecimento, amizade, jogos, família
Redes e informação
• Building from Nan Lin’s (2001) theories of social networks and social capital …
• Information can be: Accessible in the
network, • Present, potential (tacit)
Mobilized • Used for some outcome
(explicit) Structural
• Based in the network, embedded
• Who shares what information with whom? How do relationships
between people affect how information reaches them?
How do information sharing patterns affect who gets what kinds of information?
• What facilitates or inhibits information mobility? What technologies? What configurations? Through which people? From where to where?
• Maps show how road networks facilitate or inhibit movement Road systems= network
structures
viários=estruturas de rede
Redes sociais e informação
• Networks let us see how information moves and how actors are positioned
• Information flow lets us see networks
• Traces left behind by our information transfers and exchanges Documents, transcripts,
recordings, archives, memories
Clusters of people, ideas, artefacts
• Common buying, browsing, and citing
Shared history• Co-attendance at events,
meetings, schools, universitites
• Co-participation in committees, boards

• Information sharing through social networks shows How information moves
among members of a social system
How actors and ties between actors affect information movement
Flows, configurations, and networks that result from such movement
What outcomes go with such movement and configurations
• Next - some SN basics• Then - closer look at SN and
information
Actors Nodes in the network Interact and maintain
relations with each otherRelations Lines in the network Connect actors in specific
kinds of interaction, and by joint experience
Ties Lines between actors Exist between actors,
connected by one or more relations
Networks Whole configuration of lines
and actors Result from the combined set
of actors and ties

comunicação e informação
1. Uma variedade de tipos de informação
Collecting data• Ask about specific
information relations Who gave you information
that led to your current job? (Granovetter, 1973)
Who do you discuss important matters with? (Burt, US social survey)
Who do you go to for medical information?
• Or, let the network members tell you about types What do you talk about with
friends? What do you learn from others? What do others learn from you?
Coletando dados• Perguntar sobre relações de
informação específicas Quem te deu informação que
te levou ao seu emprego atual? (Granovetter, 1973)
Com quem você discute informações importantes?
(Burt, US Social Survey)• Ou deixar membros de redes
mencionarem tipos O que você conversa com
amigos? O que você aprende com os outros?
O que os outros aprendem com você?
Tipos: Trabalho e interação social
Study of 25 co-locatedacademic researchers• Asked ‘how often’ they
engaged in 24 types of work and social
interactions -- with up to 20 others in the department
• Factor analysis reduced this to six dimensions Receiving work Giving work Collaborative Writing Computer Programming Sociability Major Emotional Support

•How is the core connected?
•Did we know this core beforehand?
•Does it match members awareness of connections?
3. Atores e laçosIncreasing with the strength of
tie• Number and types of
relations Relational multiplexity
• Self-disclosure, intimacy• Reciprocity• Number of media used
Media multiplexity• Frequency of contact
Which produces• Increased motivation to
share information• Amount and variety of
information that is shared
Weak Ties• Acquaintances, casual
contacts Tend to be unlike each
other Travel in different social
circles• Information exchanges
Infrequent, instrumental Few types of information or
support Low motivation to share
information• Strength of weak ties
Experience, information, and attitudes come from a different social sphere
But, no obligation to share
Ties and Information sharing
Strong Ties• Friends, close friends, co-
workers, team-mates Tend to be like each other Travel in the same social
circles• Information exchanges
Frequent, multiple types: emotional and instrumental
High level of intimacy, self-disclosure
Reciprocity in exchanges• Strength of strong ties
Motivated -- obliged -- to share what resources they have
But, access to same resources
Muitos tipos e frequentes: com conteúdo instrumental e emocional
4. Network Knowledge
Group level knowledge• Transactive memory
(Wegner; Moreland; Borgatti & Cross; Hollingshead; Contractor) Who knows what Who knows who knows
what• Individual’s knowledge of
overall network structures (cognitive social structures) Who goes out with who
• Network control of attention and reward structures Reputation, trust, influence,
control• Types of knowledge
sustaining the network
Conhecimento de grupo• Memória transacional
(Wegner; Moreland; Borgatti & Cross; Hollingshead; Contractor) Quem sabe o quê Quem sabe quem sabe o
sustentam a rede
a
b cKrackhardt: ‘Laços de Simmel’• Simmelian Ties
Pairs contained in complete three-person cliques
Members share more similar views of group structure
• “Our guess is that … cliques lead to stronger ties and stronger ties lead to cliques in a reciprocating process that reinforces the relationship between Simmelian ties and agreement.” (Krackhardt & Kilduff, 2002, p. 288)
Haythornthwaite: ‘Laços latentes’• “a tie for which a
connection is available technically but that has not yet been activated by social interaction” (Haythornthwaite, 2002, p. 387)
• Latent ties provide base on which weak ties can form, and then grow to strong
• Latent tie structures must be initiated by authorities beyond the actors involved E.g., a regular face-to-face
meeting, an email list
5. Resultados pessoais e de rede• Information outcomes
Mobility and distribution of information
External monitoring for new opportunities (gatekeepers, gurus)(Cohen & Levinthal)
• Network robustness Resilience to change in parts,
persistence over time, stable social structure
Known rules of behavior, membership, etc.
Shared monitoring of behavior (Burt)
• Social Mobility How easily you have access to
those with influence How easily you can move out
of your network
• Resultados informacionais Mobilidade e distribuição da
informação Monitoramento externo de
novas oportunidades (Gatekeepers, gurus)(Cohen&
Social capital• “Resources that can be
accessed or mobilized through ties in the network” … resources accessible through one’s direct and indirect ties” (Lin, 1999, 1982)
• Found in a “durable network of more or less institutionalized relationships of mutual acquaintance and recognition” (Bourdieu, 1983)
• Benefits for civic involvement (Putnam; Kavanaugh)
Benefícios pessoais• From networks high in social
capital Social, emotional, economic,
health support Greater the number and density
of relations and ties, the better mental health (Pecasolido)
Note: some influence may be negative (obesity study, Christakis & Fowler, 2007)
• Personal networks change Number of contacts declines
with age Focus on the household
changes with age, marriage Recent U.S. results suggest
decrease in size of core discussion networks (McPherson & Smith-Loven, 2006)
econômico, saúde Quanto maior o número e a
6. Informação, redes e TICs
• Connections to others affect Motivation to adopt
computers and the Internet Satisfaction with online
connection Learning about use, and
sharing learning Using the Internet for
others (‘proxy’ use)• Social networks from work,
school, household, online matter
• Social networks affect who has access to online information
• Contatos com outros afetam Motivação para adotar
computadores e internet Satisfação com contatos
online Aprendizado sobre uso da
internet e aprendizado colaborativo
Uso da internet para outros (por procuração)
• Redes sociais online do trabalho, escola, família são importantes
• Redes sociais afetam quem tem acesso a informação online
ICTs at Home
• Highly related to fluent online use• Uso de TICs em casa etá altamente relacionado a uso fluente

ICTs na escola• Children are a key reason the
Internet is brought into the household Parents buy computers for
children’s schoolwork Children bring learning into the
home from school, and use the Internet for parents
• Income greatly affects use by children Highest income level: 88%
overall use, 83% at home use Lowest income level: 46%
overall use, 22% at home use (NTIA, 2002)
• Being in school greatly affects use by youth (18-24) In school: 85% use the Internet,
not in school: 52% (NTIA, 2002)
Acesso às TICs nas escolas• Major sites for learning about use• Major influence on bringing knowledge about use into the home
casa

ICTs at Work
• Computer use at work greatly increases the likelihood that computers will enter the household (McPherson & Smith-Loven, 2006) 77% of those who use a computer at work have computer/Internet at
home vs 35% for those who do not use a computer at work.
“This underscores a critical connection between the workplace and home: exposure to a computer and the Internet in the workplace makes it substantially more likely for a computer and the Internet to be used at home. Use at work not only acquaints someone with the utility of the technology, it also provides an opportunity to climb a sometimes frustrating learning curve in an environment with technical support. This acquired knowledge can then be taken home and shared with other members of a household.” (NTIA, 2002, p. 62-3)
ICT por ocupação• Use at work differs by occupation, hence affecting who has
access, whose children have access, and who has access by proxy
Uso por procuração• Not being online does not
necessarily mean not having access US: 20% of non-users live
with someone who uses the Internet at home
74% of non-users say they have close friends and/or family who go online (Lenhart et al, 2003)
Family members inside or outside the home act as online searchers for non-users, and help bring non-users online
Skills are brought home from work, school, etc into the household of the non-user
