The manga and anime series  Black Butler  features an extensive cast of characters created by

Yana Toboso.

The series takes place in England during the reign of Queen Victoria. It follows ebastian

!ichaelis" a demonic butler obliged to serve twelve#year#old $later thirteen#year#old% Earl

&iel 'hantomhive due to a contract he made with &iel. In exchange for binding ebastian to

his will" &iel offers his soul to him. The series( storyline follows &iel and ebastian solving

the problems plaguing England while waiting for the day &iel gets his wish) To make the

 people that humiliated him and ruined his life feel the same pain.

ebastian !ichaelis $セバスチャン・ミカエリス Sebasuchan Mikaerisu?%" the title

character " is the demon  butler  of the 'hantomhive household and acts as &iel(s bodyguard.

*eing a butler is a +ob he is completely devoted to" following &iel(s orders with great loyalty

and swiftness. ,e en+oys challenging &iel and doesn(t seem to be truly concerned about his

well#being at times" insulting and irritating him to see his reaction. ,owever" there are times

that he displays concern about &iel(s life" such as when he was worried when &iel had anasthma attack " and again later on when he had a panic attack . ebastian has a fondness for

felines in general" stating he cannot foresee or control his own reactions and feelings when in

 presence of one. -s a demon" he has also shown to be extremely ruthless" sadistic" and

manipulative to his opponents and is intrigued with humans( behaviors and attitudes" as he

finds them interesting because of their insatiable greed.

,e is highly skilled at practically everything and handles every task" no matter how

impossible it is" as well as any problem that arises from the errors of the other staff" with ease.

ue to the fact he is a demon who is bound by a /austian contract" he must abide by &iel(s

will and his contract mark is located on his left hand" allowing ebastian to find &iel wherever

he is whenever &iel(s contract mark is exposed. In return" &iel is able to summon and give

orders to ebastian.

,e is voiced by Toshiyuki !orikawa on the first drama &" aisuke 0no in the anime

adaption and on the second drama &" and 1. !ichael Tatum in the English dub.234254264 In the

upcoming film adaptation" !ichaelis will be portrayed by ,iro !i7ushima.

Ciel Phantomhive

Earl &iel 'hantomhive $シエル・ファントムハイヴ Shieru Fantomuhaivu?% is the business#

savvy" egotistical thirteen#year#old $as of chapter 38% and the head of the 'hantomhive family

after the deaths of his parents" Vincent and 9achel 'hantomhive. ,e runs the /untom

&ompany" which manufactures toys and sweets" with the later addition of a food branch after

winning a 9oyal :arrant. ,is right eye" which is usually covered with a black eye patch"

 bears a  pentagram" the sign of the /austian contract he made with the demon ebastian. ;ike

the previous earls in his family" &iel is currently known as the Queen(s :atchdog $also

translated as <uard og%" tasked with eliminating criminals and solving cases in the

underworld for Queen Victoria.

-fter his parents( deaths and prior to meeting ebastian" he was a slave and a sacrifice in a

cult ritual. uring one particular instance where &iel was being tortured" his hatred for his

torturers summoned ebastian. ,e then commanded the demon to kill all the people in the

room and from that day forward" &iel devoted his life to find the people responsible for the

humiliation and suffering he had to endure. uring his time as a slave" a brand was burned

into his back" which he does not want anyone to see. -s a nobleman" &iel presents himself asa proud" solemn" and mature boy. ue to his past misfortunes" he rarely smiles and is

merciless when dealing with enemies. ,owever" &iel has occasionally expressed concern for

the well#being of the few close to him. espite his stoic demeanor" &iel exhibits traits

 befitting a child for his age" such as his fondness for sweets and games. -s such" &iel is

clever" mischievous and competitive" doing whatever it takes to win a match. -lthough

 physically weak" &iel is proficient with the use of guns" and always carries one in order to

 protect himself. ,e is allergic to cats and had inherited asthma from his mother.

Phantomhive household

The 'hantomhive manor belongs to the 'hantomhive family and is located outside the city of

;ondon. The 'hantomhive family is a secret executive agency controlled directly by Queen

Victoria and is often referred to as the =-ristocrats of Evil= and the =Queen(s :atchdogs=.

They are tasked with eliminating anything that worries the Queen by any means necessary.

They are able to control and manage the underworld of the >nited ?ingdom to avoid any

information of its existence from reaching the general public. -s such" the 'hantomhive

family(s position as the Queen(s :atchdogs is only known by selected individuals in  polite

society. The current head of the family is &iel 'hantomhive" son of Earl Vincent and &ountess

9achel 'hantomhive" who were murdered and their original estate burned $the manor in

which &iel currently resides with his servants is an exact replica of the original manor%. In

addition to the services they provide for the Queen" the 'hantomhive family runs a famous toy

and confectionery corporation called /untom &ompany.

The estate currently has five servants" but their positions as servants are a front for their real

 +obs of protecting the 'hantomhive estate as well as protecting &iel" to whom they are deeply

devoted. *aldroy serves as the cook" /innian is the gardener" and !ey#9in is the maid. The

three were personally chosen and trained by ebastian for their duties. Tanaka has served

under Earl Vincent and ;ady 9achel as their butler" but has not been seen doing any work

during his service under &iel" in which his +ob is the house steward. ebastian !ichaelis" a

demon" acts as the butler after Tanaka. nake is the newest addition" and acts as the footman.

;ady 9achel and Earl 'hantomhive each have one sister@ both married and became a part ofother noble families before the start of the series. 9achel(s sister" -ngelina alles $nicknamed

as !adam 9ed%" married into the *urnett family. he committed the 1ack the 9ipper (s

murders and was killed by her accomplice" <rell utcliff" after her exposure. Vincent(s sister"

!archioness /rancis !idford" married !arAuess !idford" and their daughter" Eli7abeth" is

engaged to &iel.

Baldroy (バルドロイ Barudoroi?)

Baldroy (also spelled as Bardroy), usually referred to as Baldo or Bard, is

the household cook of 1merican descent 9e rarely produces anythin"edi!le as he uses %eaponry such as :amethro%ers to cook, !elievin" that

cookin" is an art re;uirin" e6plosions e!astian !elieves anythin" he

creates is made up of charcoal and carcino"ens Baldroy pursues cookin"

to learn ho% to slo% do%n, as he states cookin" takes patience to master,

%hich %as somethin" he %as not used to durin" his years in the military

When he %as a soldier, his entire platoon %as %iped out, leavin" him as

the only survivor e!astian discovered Baldroy on the !attle$eld after his

comrades had fallen and o8ered him employment While terri!le at

cookin", he is sho%n to !e capa!le of takin" advanta"e of his

surroundin"s, such as usin" $ne :our to create an e6plosion 5ue to hise6perience as a soldier, he takes command over the servants %hen Ciel

Finnian (フィニアン Finian?)

Finnian, usually referred to as Finny, is the household "ardener 9o%ever, it

seems every time he tends to the "arden, it is destroyed throu"h an

accident caused !y his clumsiness 9e is portrayed as an innocent,

optimistic character %ho loves his %ork, !ut is du!!ed an idiot !y

'eyRin is the household maid 'eyRin has e6treme !inocular acuity and

%as "iven a pair of round "lasses !y Ciel, %hich she cherishes and refuses

to "ive up The "lasses limit 'eyRin0s eyesi"ht and prevent her from

vie%in" o!ects correctly at closeran"e, %hich causes her to !e clumsy

%hen doin" her chores ho%ever, e!astian !elieves her main pro!lem is

her intelli"ence and not her eyesi"ht he has a crush on e!astian as she

!lushes %henever she is in his presence and is even clumsier %hen

e!astian is %atchin" he is rather superstitious, !ut admits to havin" a

soft spot for scary stories 'eyRin is a professional sniper and due to her

sharp !inocular vision, she does not re;uire a scope to aid her he is also

physically $t as she can use a sniper ri:e like a hand"un and keeps

 Tanaka (タナカ?)

 Tanaka is the house ste%ard of Eapanese descent 9e %as present %hen

Ciel0s parents %ere killed and %as sta!!ed in the !ack tryin" to protect

Ciel 1s a result, he rarely talks or does any %ork, !ut is al%ays seenparticipatin" in the other servants0 antics e!astian seems to respect him

the most out of all the sta8 9e is usually seen drinkin" from a Eapanese

tea cup and commonly seen in a super deformed form 5espite his

appearance, Tanaka is capa!le of killin" intruders e8ortlessly Prior to

e!astian0s appointment as Ciel0s !utler, Tanaka served as the head !utler

of the Phantomhive household for Ciel0s father 9e is very loyal and kind to

Ciel, and is strict %hen it comes to his duties #nlike the other servants,

 Tanaka is perceptive in e!astian0s actions, as %ell for the reasons !ehind

them When e!astian is apparently murdered, Ciel appoints Tanaka as the

all over his !ody 9is sentences al%ays end %ith a name of one of his many

snakes, indicatin" he is uncomforta!le %hen communicatin" %ith others

unless throu"h his pets 1dditionally, nake %ill use a distinct accent and

for his personal needs and !lames all of his pro!lems on others 5urin" the

course of his time in >n"land, oma !e"ins to mature, althou"h he still

possesses childish traits 1fter learnin" that his servant 'ina hated him for

his i"norance and selfa!sor!ed personality, oma decided to stay %ith
