description

first solo exhibition of theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck, in a context and house for contemporary art. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Kris Verdonck’s work is situated in the transit zone between visual arts and theatre, between installation and performance. In his work, he creates an eerie sketch of the current state of our world. One of Verdonck's creations housed in Z33 is the commission EXOTE, a metaphorical garden installation with a selection of the most invasive alien species (fauna and flora) in Belgium. The indoor garden is part of a route with some of Kris Verdonck’s earlier projections and installations, which have now been gathered in a contemporary art setting for the first time. http://www.z33.be/en/projects/kris-verdonck-exhibition-1

With Kris Verdonck – EXHIBITION #1 Z33 is showing the works of theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck (1974) in a major solo exhibition. For the first time his work has been gathered under a single roof in a house for contemporary art. Verdonck’s crea-tions are situated in the transit zone between visual arts and theatre, installation and performance, and dance and architecture. This, com-bined with Verdonck’s topical, critical view of our society and world, is what brought him to the attention of Z33.

Verdonck’s installations and performances are designed to reflect on the ‘current state of the world’, with its environmental problems, eco-logical disasters and wars. He takes different facets of a world that we recognise, and translates, magnifies or brings them to the surface. The field of tension between man and machine, man and society, and man and nature creates an atmosphere of ‘Unheimlichkeit’ or alienation in his work. In Z33, Verdonck focuses on the confusion and alienation of man in his environment, but also on the confusion of the world itself in which the Apocalypse is already upon us.

Verdonck gives shape to this latter image in Z33 in a new work: EXOTE. This ‘garden installation’ houses a selection of the most invasive alien species (plants and animals) in Belgium, which constitute a genuine threat to biodiversity, the economy and public health. EXOTE is part of a larger route of projec-tions and installations that Verdonck has already created. Some of these were already shown in his work K, a Society (2010), which revolved around images of a Kafka-esque so-ciety: over-perfected and unsettling. In Z33, Verdonck’s work will be seen for the first time not in a theatre but in a visual arts context, thus creating a different perception of time and space for the viewer.

Along with the installations and projections in Z33, Verdonck also explores the city as an exhibition space, integrating a night projection into the Hasselt urban area as a ‘painting for the city’. More informa-tion about the extended programme for EXHIBITION #1 can be found at the back of this mini-catalogue.

Kris verdoncK

Your work is situated in the transit zone between visual arts and theatre. So far, it has mainly been shown in theatres. This is your first major exhibition. Do you expect your images to see a shift in meaning in this new context?

That’s the great experiment of this exhibi-tion. I hope that not much will change, but we just don’t know. In the theatre, time has a big impact

on the work: this usually has to do with a theatrical time that the audience experiences. Whether it’s an object, a video or a play that’s being shown, in a theatre the audience is asked to view it for a clearly delimited time. This dynamic influences their perception of it. A theatre-goer sees things differently than someone who can just decide to leave. In the semi-enclosed, darkened theatre, there’s much more social pressure not to leave, and this too influ-ences the perception. The figures that I create – whether they’re filmed or live – usually do a very limited number of actions or movements. Time and dura-tion has a big impact on them as well. In a visual arts context, the quality of the image may gain in importance. But actually I don’t know for sure.

You’re certainly being confronted here with viewers who belong to a different ‘circuit’ than theatre-goers. I’m very curious about that. You can see my ‘plays’ like I/II/III/IIII or

END – and also many of my performances – as big installations that are displayed in a theatrical context. For me they’re installations in every sense. People who are familiar with visual arts have less difficulty with this, while a theatre or dance audience still likes to see an evolution or even a story in the figures. So the ‘visual arts way’ of viewing the piece works very well in my theatre projects or performances. I’m also curious as to what this relationship with the audience in a house for contemporary art will be like. For me it’s really about what’s happening inside the viewer at the moment of the experi-ence. For example, when walking around in the EXOTE installation – in this garden full of invasive alien species – you can hardly claim that there’s ‘a classic theatrical tension’ in the air.

In the theatre we mainly use our eyes and ears, whereas the gar-den seems to address all senses.

Over the last thirty years, installation artists have indeed aimed to get audiences to experience things with multiple senses; as if you’re actually step-ping into a painting. EXOTE is an installation that you walk around in and that you yourself become part of.

It’s not only a ‘total experience’ for the viewer; EXOTE is also push-ing the boundaries of art itself.

The entire production process, both before and after the exhibition, is part of the work. Looking for the plants and animals, dealing with safety pro-visions, protecting staff, viewers and the environment, destroying the plants, cleaning up afterwards… It’s all part of the installation. We have to be aware that the whole environment – not only Z33, but also Hasselt and the surround-ing areas – could potentially be impacted by this work. The invasive alien species have to be kept within the walls of the exhibition space. Otherwise, they could damage the environment in a very direct way. In a ‘performance’ it’s always about something ‘real’, something that’s not being played but is actually real. The garden is a real and dangerous ‘object’: a situation that you can’t take lightly; an environment with entities that could cause visitors direct physical injuries. For example, if you touch the giant hogweed you might get burnt.

Making ‘dangerous’ art: is that one of the tasks of an artist today?

We live in a completely infantilised, ‘vaseline-ised’ society, a society in which we’re double-insured for everything, because ‘something’s bound to happen at some point!’ It’s a society that’s cracking under the weight of over-protection, that’s coming to a standstill due to the crippling fear of what might happen. To me, art seems to be a good tool that we can use to enter into a dialogue with this reality, in order to return to a lost sense of reasonableness. Obviously, the scientists we spoke to in preparing EXOTE cannot (or may not?) think in such extremes as artists when it comes to communicating about dangerous, invasive alien species to a wide audience. They would never cre-ate such an extreme garden as this in order to set a public debate in motion and touch a raw nerve.

In your earlier work, you particularly emphasised the relationship between man and machine, and man and object. In your 2010 work K, a Society, you show man in his societal relationships, in relation to other people. In EXOTE you bring animals and plants together. Are machines and objects fading into the background?

The core theme of my work is ‘Unheimlichkeit’ or alienation. This arises by creating an environment which has a direct influence on the players. It is a situation or state that is strange and unpleasant. In EXOTE, this is a garden. The plants and animals are not a problem as such, and they are not to blame. They originally come from a different biotope with natural enemies, which keeps the ecosystem there in perfect balance. They ended up here due to globalisation, our travels, international trade... And many of the invasive alien species that you’ll see here are also easily available in garden centres. So we don’t even realise what we’re putting in our own gardens.

Beeld opbouw EXOTE foto: Maya Wilsens (A Two Dogs Company)

In EXOTE, I’m con-tinuing on with the common thread of my earlier work. But the physical influence of the created environ-ment now concerns not the performers, but the viewers instead. This was also the case in my earlier installa-tion, BOX. The light source in that work was so bright that the viewers had to

wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. In EXOTE, the plants and animals are ‘foreign’. We brought them here and, by doing so, created an environment in which we ourselves become foreign: we have to protect ourselves in order to be able to walk around in it. So a similar process is set in motion as in my earlier work. If you were to wonder what sort of nature would fit into the world of the people I showed in K, a Society, then you’d arrive at EXOTE. All those figures are the inhabitants of this garden; they walk around in it.

Marianne Van Kerkhoven

One of the criteria for which works you’d present in this exhibition was whether they could be ‘constantly present’ in Z33. So you couldn’t use an installation like DANCER #1, for example, which lasts only a few minutes before having to be reset for technical reasons. Given the context of visual arts I naturally chose for the works that could

run ‘on loop’, so to say. Over the last two years I’ve concentrated more on objects than on performers, the result being what you see here. Visitors will be able to explore the exhibition using an audio guide that maps out a ‘guided’ and ‘timed’ route. On weekends we give tours with a ‘guided guide’ that leads the visitor from one work to the next and takes about an hour and a quarter. That’s about a good ‘theatre time’. People often say that my work is too plastic for the theatre. So actually I’m now hoping that people will say it’s too theatrical for a house for contemporary art.

(…) Daar zit de man dagen en jaren. Hij probeert telkens toegelaten te worden. (…)

FRIEZE consists of two projec-tions of enlarged figures standing up straight. They are cramped inside a small, tall box and they wait. They try to keep straight, but their bodies insist on contorting in the confined space. Nevertheless they persevere in maintaining their dignity. Keeping up appearances. When the man and the woman are completely upside down, they slowly pull themselves upright again, straighten their clothes and look ahead as if nothing hap-pened.

The figures in FRIEZE are typi-cal ‘Verdonck-characters’: business types, neatly dressed, civilised and modern, but all stuck in a system, in an untenable situation. But they don’t ask questions. They maintain their faith; persistence is the message.

The characters in FRIEZE could be considered to be a modern version of the caryatids: the human figures that often replaced pillars in classical architecture. They were functional as well as ornamental and emanated power. The caryatids in FRIEZE on the other hand, display their vulnerability in the extreme.

Before the Law stands a doorkeeper. To this doorkeeper there comes a man from the country and prays for admittance to the Law. But the door-keeper says that he cannot grant admittance at the moment. The man thinks it over and then asks if he will be allowed in later. “It is possible”, says the doorkeeper, “but not at the moment.” (…) There he sits for days and years. He makes many attempts to be admitted. (…) During these many years the man fixes his attention almost continuously on the doorkeeper. (…) Now he has not very long to live…”

DANCER #3 shows a robot try-ing to stand up straight. He always falls down again, but never gives up. He endures this process of trial and error cheerfully and indefatigably. The energy of this automaton is infec-tious. His clumsiness and constant failure display the optimism of a clown who’s always tripping over.

DANCER #3 is one of Kris Verdoncks’ variations on the meta-morphosis from chaos to order.

MOUSE shows – enormously magnified and in extreme slow-mo-tion – a mouse walking into a trap. The trap closes, the iron breaks the small body, the mouse dies.

We eat meat every day and we know that therefore animals are killed. But at the same time, we don’t want to know this, and we definitely don’t want to be confronted with it visually. MOUSE is an image from everyday reality, an image of our daily hypocrisy. Because of the mag-nification of sound and movement it becomes a mini-opera.

For this recording, a camera with super slow motion (10,000 im-ages/sec) was used. These cameras unravel the mechanics of a move-ment, just like photographer Ead-weard Muybridge did. By using this technique we are shown a different, ‘subjective’ reality. In MOUSE we experience an emergency situation in a very clear and slow way. The ‘subjective’ experience becomes a nightmare.

No animals were harmed shooting this video.

“Alas”, said the mouse, ”the world is growing smaller every day. At the beginning it was so big that I was afraid. I kept running, and I was glad when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner stands the trap that I must run into.” – “You only need to change your direction”, said the cat, and ate him up.”

A large company of people be-longing to ‘higher society’ gazes at the audience. The men and women stand in a line next to each other, very close to each other, all equally tall. They incessantly whisper words in each others’ ears and they look the spectator impudently in the eye. GOSSIP is like a peeking painting that is amused by the spectator and looks down on him.

GOSSIP shows a ‘community’, uniform, civilised, empty but deter-mined. Men and women, young and old, all grown-ups. Deformed but equal to each other and extremely satisfied. They have suppressed their fear, confusion and sense of ‘Unheimlichkeit’ and they display their pseudo-happy exterior. They are representatives of a society that stands at the edge of an abyss. Children are absent in this society.

We are five friends, one day we came out of a house one after the other, first one came and placed himself beside the gate. (…) Finally we all stood in a row. (…) Since then we have been living together, it would be a peaceful life if it weren’t for a sixth one continually trying to interfere. He doesn’t do us any harm, but he annoys us. (…) We push him away with our elbows, but however much we push him away, back he comes.”

thread, and indeed it does seem to have thread wound upon it. (...) One is tempted to believe that the creature one had some sort of

intelligible shape and is now only a broken-down remnant. (…) I ask myself, to no purpose, what is likely to happen to him? Can he possibly die? Anything that dies has had some kind of aim in

life, some kind of activity, which has worn out; but that does not apply to Odradek. (…) He does no harm to anyone that one can see; but the idea

that he is likely to survive me I find almost painful.”

From: ‘The Cares of a Family Man’ by Franz Kafka

HUMINID is inspired by the history of the creation of the ‘homun-culus’. This is an artificial miniature human that philosophers, alchemists and scientists have sought over the centuries since Greek Antiquity.

In HUMINID, the spectator is addressed directly by a creature that can be called part human and part doll. Halfway between human and thing, halfway between life and death. In Faust II (1832) Goethe describes how Mephistopheles and his helper Wagner bring a small artificial being to life in a phial (a flask).

The huminid shown here is simultaneously both flask and being, womb and embryo. He is made of dead matter, is a not-anything, but his heart beats and he breathes. He is still unfinished, he grows inside his pod and he wants to ‘be’, but at the same time there is the knowledge that he is not viable outside the flask. He talks ceaselessly, he exists only in language. HUMINID is one of the variations on the metamorphosis from chaos to order.

With the voice and image of actor Johan Leysen. Script inspired by Samuel Beckett’s ‘Lessness’.

The ‘machinery’, appliances and objects that are situated behind the scenes of a performance / show, are visualized in this space. The ma-chines often look like medieval instru-ments (of torture). At the same time, they are often high-technological objects, that fulfil complex functions. They form a large contrast with the extreme esthetical images that they produce.

The overview of machines and earlier performances / installations by Kris Verdonck addresses the field of tension between man and machine in today’s society. What relationship can/must/do people want to enter into with technology? How difficult is the balancing act between human control and submis-sion to machines? There are differing degrees in the extent to which we put ourselves at the mercy of machines: from not being able to function with-out our mobile phones to depending on life and death on a breathing machine.

– Marianne Van Kerkhoven

Kris Verdonck’s work is characterised by an atmosphere of ‘Unheimlichkeit’. The word ‘unhe-imlich’ – it was Freud who brought this feeling to our attention – is not easy to translate: strange, incom-prehensible, mysterious, frightening, associated with supernatural powers. Literally, un-heim-lich means he who has no home, who belongs nowhere. He who is adrift from the familiar.”

Syncope is the medical term for fainting, a sudden, usually tempo-rary, loss of consciousness generally caused by insufficient oxygen in the brain. Typical symptoms progress through dizziness, clamminess of the skin, a dimming of vision or greyout, possibly tinnitus, complete loss of vision, weakness of limbs to physical collapse. (Wikipedia)

So perhaps the best resource is to meet everything passively, to make yourself an inert mass, and, if you feel that you are being carried away, not to let yourself be lured into taking a single unnecessary step, to stare at others with the eyes of an animal, to feel no compunction, in short, with your own hand to throttle down whatever ghostly life remains in you, that is, to enlarge the final peace of the graveyard and let nothing survive save that. A characteristic movement in such a condition is to run your little finger along your eyebrows.”

From: ‘Resolutions’ by Franz Kafka

In the middle of a room stands a big container with high sides. On the surface of the water, the spectator sees a man floating. He is much big-ger than an average man, he wears a smart suit and holds his briefcase tightly in his arms. The briefcase keeps him floating. He waits. Submis-sive and hardly surprised about the situation in which he finds himself, he floats calmly, smokes a cigarette and turns in the water.

Pre-syncope is a state consisting of lightheadedness, muscular weak-ness, and feeling faint (as opposed to a syncope, which is actually fainting). In many patients, lighthead-edness is a symptom of orthostatic hypotension. Orthostatic hypotension occurs when blood pressure drops significantly when the patient stands from a supine or sitting position. If loss of consciousness occurs in this situation, it is termed syncope. (Wikipedia)

In PRESYNCOPE the camera slowly and steadily slides down the façade of a very tall office block. The ground approaches slowly. We hear the calm voice of someone describ-ing his thoughts and impressions during the fall. This inner monologue contains scraps of memories from the lifetime that preceded the fall, trivial details of the previous workday, strange reflections on falling and on the world… The image stops as the camera reaches the foot of the build-ing, almost touching the water.

The garden, ‘planted’ on the first floor of Z33, houses a selection of the most invasive alien species (animals and plants) in Belgium, from the Japanese knotweed to the bull-frog. The visitor walks around in a protective suit in this end-of-the-world landscape, a sort of mono-world overgrown with just a few species. As certain non-native species in the installation present a potential threat to biodiversity in Hasselt and the surrounding areas (some species ar not yet present here), visitors need to be aware that even the smallest seed or animal cannot be allowed to escape. The evolution of the garden, the protective clothing and the safety provisions involved in the installation as well as the destruction of the gar-den form an essential and necessary part of the artwork.

EXOTE’s aim is not to position itself within the scientific debate on biological invasions, but to be a metaphor to reflect on our interac-tion with the environment in which we live.

In EXOTE we admire the beauty of water and other plants, of amphib-ians, fish and birds. We experience the paradoxical beauty of this negative Garden of Eden. But this sense of happiness is quickly over-shadowed by the knowledge that it is not this glorious garden that is ill, but rather the people who created it...

Man’s ever-increasing interfer-ence in nature leads to a profound disturbance of the biological bal-ance. Totally estranged from nature, as machines of consumption we poison our own environment to the point that we can no longer live in it. The images of people in white suits, masks and gloves in the oil gunk in the Gulf of Mexico, the red-brown sludge of the Hungarian aluminium factory and the unhealthy air of our big cities might seem futuristic, but are in fact all too current and real. They form the point of departure for EXOTE, the ‘garden installation’ that Kris Verdonck has made for Z33. The enclosed garden stands as a metaphor for a world in which man is increasingly forced to protect himself from an environment that he himself has created.

InvasIve alIen specIes are types of plants and animals that are spread by human hands outside their natural area, and come to flourish in the new environment. This phenomenon is not new, but its frequency and scope have seen a spectacular increase due to globalisation and the exponential growth of the transport and travel sectors. Alien species can be brought in via ballast water from ships, for example, or via fruit trans-ports. However, only a small number of them actually become invasive in the new environment.

Due to their explosive growth, these species tend to displace other, native species, and as such they constitute a problem for biodiversity, the economy and public health. Biological invasions by invasive alien species are considered one of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide.
