The water is just right for making sake, and authentic sake has been made here for 400 years. Throughout the town, the rustic brown and black wooden fences combine with the white warehouses and the beautiful sake breweries lining the street. Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum 月桂冠大倉記念館 3 This museum preserves and exhibits vital sake-brewing equipment and explains the sake making history in Fushimi as well as the history of sake-making in Japan in an easy-to-understand fashion. Inside, visitors will hear the “sake-brewing song” that is sung while making sake. Also, the atmosphere of a sake brewery is recreated, and sake tasting is offered. Kizakura Memorial Hall 黄桜記念館 4 Kizakura, widely known for its kappa image, has produced a sake and cuisine experience. The Kizakura Memorial Hall introduces the folklore around kappa, and offers craft beer, Ginjoshu premium sake and other samples paired with Kizakura original Kaiseki dishes (a traditional Japanese multiple course meal) at the Kizakura Sake Bar. Teradaya 寺田屋 5 Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the leaders of the Meiji Restoration lodged at this boathouse inn. Sword cuts and the back staircase used by Sakamoto’s wife Oryou, to warn him of the approaching assassins in what is known as the Teradaya Incident are preserved here. A photo exhibit helps to conjure up that era of history. Gokonomiya-jinja Shrine 御香宮神社 8 This shrine is dedicated to Empress Jingu, called “Japan’s first goddess of safe births.” The magnificent front gate of Fushimi-jo Castle is relocated here. A beautiful rock garden was produced by the landscape architect, Kobori Enshu. The spring water that flows here, called Gokosui, is said to heal illness when drunk. Fushimi Port Park, Fushimi Port Plaza 伏見港公園・伏見みなと広場 7 Fushimi Port was opened when Toyotomi Hideyoshi had the Fushimi Castle built. It was also the base for water transportation to and from Osaka. The coming and going of the flatboats and Sanjukoku ships allowed the port to prosper for a while, but it gradually went into decline in modern times and is now shut. That history is preserved in the Misukomon Lock Gate Museum. Saigan-ji Temple 西岸寺 6 The Oil-Covered Jizo is deified here. In the old days, oil makers in Kyoto and Yamazaki have held a service to pour the leftover oil over Jizo. When one merchant prospered after doing this, many people came with oil to pour on Jizo in hopes that their wishes would come true. It is said that Matsuo Basho visited and a poem monument is placed on the temple grounds. Station Area Map for strolling Keihan Railway Fushimi-momoyama Sta. Chushojima Sta.
