El nombre lo acuña el poeta Otto zur Linde, de la generación anterior para referirse a la reacción al grupo de la revista Charon (1904)
contra el impresionismo.
En realidad es un movimiento que se consolida en Alemania, pero que nos remite a muchos antecedentes. Ya Van Gogh, en las cartas que escribe a su hermano Teo en Arles, había anunciado lo que sería la premisa fundamental del movimiento que nacería décadas más tarde:
“Expresar lo físico por lo psíquico en
imágenes y colores”.

"...regresaba de hacer mis bosquejos sumido en mis pensamientos, cuando de pronto, al abrir la puerta del estudio me vi enfrentado a una imagen de indescriptible belleza incandescente. Perplejo me quedé mirándola. El cuadro carecía de tema, no representaba ningún objeto que se pudiera identificar y estaba totalmente compuesto de manchas brillantes de color. Finalmente me acerqué
y sólo entonces vi lo que realmente era: mi propio cuadro,
cuya posición en el caballete había cambiado, quedando ladeado y
como apaisado. Una cosa se me hizo clara, que la objetividad,
la representación de los objetos no tenían ningún sentido en mis
cuadros y, que en realidad, era perjudicial para ellos".
