Uit die Voorsitterstoel

Die SKOMK het besluit om ‘n Kersfees projek genaamd die SKOMK Liefdadigheidsfonds, te loods, waarvan die opbrengs aan behoeftige kinders geskenk sal word. Die SKOMK sal nog die organisasie benoem wat voordeel sal trek uit die opbrengs. Die projek is geloods tydens die Sop en brood-aand en sal aangaan tot die begin van Oktober 2016. Tydens elke uitstappie sal ‘n houer beskikbaar wees waarin kontant-bydraes geplaas kan word. Die komitee doen ‘n beroep op al ons lede om asseblief die projek te ondersteun en so te verseker dat ons ‘n verskil kan maak in ‘n behoeftige kind se lewe.

Die bywoning van uitstappies bly ‘n bekommernis. Die beplande ete-uitstappie na Totties moes gekanselleer word as gevolg van geen belangstelling. Die heerlike uitstappie na Beaufort-Wes se Karoo Nasionale Park is ook swak bygewoon. Ons doen ‘n vriendelike dog ernstige beroep op klublede om asseblief toekomstige beplande uitstappies by te woon.

Registrasie vir die Liquorland Erfenistoer was weer baie gou vol bespreek en die res van die reëlings verloop volgens plan. Ses en twintig motors het vanjaar ingeskryf, waarvan sewe voor 1930 vervaardig is. Vanjaar se roete deur die Wes-Kaap sluit ses passe in, asook die alombekende R62 roete deur die Klein-Karoo, met ‘n totale afstand van ± 1150 km. Die toer sal vyf dae en vier nagte duur vanaf 24 – 28 September 2016. Groot dank aan al die instansies se bydraes en ondersteuning wat die toer moontlik maak.

Die SKOMK se Bedford brandweerwa is padwaardig en onderhandelinge met die kurator van die Transnet museum om hom daar te berg vir besigtiging is afgehandel.

Dit is weer dié tyd van die jaar dat die jaarlikse ledegeld betaal moet word. Kyk asseblief elders in hierdie uitgawe vir die bankbesonderhede - vir diegene wat elektronies wil betaal. Groetnis

Die eerste helfte van die jaar is al verby en die tweede helfte sal seker nog vinniger berby gaan. Ek het vyf maande gelede afgetree en kan nie rekenskap gee van wat ek in die tyd gedoen het nie, waar gaan die tyd heen? As the chairman mentioned, it is disappointing to see how few people attend the events. Gerhard Hoepfner is putting a lot of effort in to organise events only to find that some bookings need to be cancelled due to lack of interest. Some events do however attract larger numbers and it is always fun to get out and enjoy some time in the company of fellow enthusiasts. I’m also always looking for an excuse to take the Model T out on the road. For the social media nerds out there, visit the Southern Cape Old Car Club Facebook page and interact. Ek wil weereens ‘n beroep op lede doen om artikels te skryf oor klubaktiewieteite. Dit is altyd inteessant om ander se ervarings van byeenkomste te lees. Stuur gerus u bydrae gerus vir plasing in die SPANNER. Please note that we still do not have e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers for all our members. VICTORIA WEST MOTOR SHOW 19 MARCH 2016

The above motor show was once again held in Victoria West, with a much wider entry of vehicles, this time from Graaf Reinet, Beaufort West, Montague as well as the surrounding Victoria West area, (and the writer from KZN). It was gratifying for the organizers to see much more willingness from people in distant towns to bring their vehicles to show, and this year they numbered about 30 cars, trucks and bikes. The catering ladies also came to the fore, and great goodies were available to purchase from the catering setup in the old building that used to be the Mannetjies Roux Rugby Museum. As a result, the funds swelled for

contribution to the Old Age Home – a VERY worthwhile effort for this distant, and far-away Karoo town. Thank you Danie Swart for your continued effort, we will see you again next year. On a personal note, I LOVE the cleanliness, quietness, and stunning beauty of the wonderful area known as the Karoo, so I hope you don’t mind me attaching the above, which for me says it all. BESOEK AAN KAROO NASIONALE PARK – 28/29 Mei 2016 Deur Chris van Staden

Vroegdag Saterdagoggend trek ons oor die mooie Robinsonpas na Oudtshoorn, deur DE RUST en stop vir ’n baie welkome ontbyt in Meiringspoort. Dit bly maar so spesiaal om hier te vertoef. Hier wag ons vir Jan en Anita Wright maar soos gewoonlik is ou Jan nie juis op tyd nie en ons ry maar verder sonder hulle. Next stop was the farmstall between Meiringspoort and Beaufort West where we just had to stock up with genuine KAROO LAMB ( Tm) chops ! ! Some 20 kms further a real WELCOMING COMMITTEE awaited us at the BOEREKA farm stall. Brian Zechlin was there with quite a few SCOCC members from the area. Natuurlik was hulle daar met ou motors. Die Wrights het hier by ons aangesluit. Die gewone bespreking rondom die voertuie het heelwat tyd opgeneem. Amongst other things George’s GPS was used to determine the real speed Hannes Basson was doing in his lorry ! Die volgende stop was die KAROO NASIONALE PARK en na die uitpakkery het die energiekes ‘n draai gery maar party het net ge-chill. Die fasiliteite hier is eersteklas en teenstrydig met die meeste ander parke word dit goed onderhou ! Die aand het die Wrights weer by ons aangesluit asook Anita se suster en swaer Jan en Ada Kruger, hulle is regte Beauforte Westers. Daar is lekker gebraai en op een of ander totaal onverklaarbare manier het ‘n 2 liter bottel OBS by ons aangesluit ! In hierdie park sluit die fooie ontbyt elke oggend in en mens kon goed wegpak Sondagoggend waarna ons weer ’n paar draaie gery het. Ons was toe gelukkig om behalwe heelwat bokke twee leeu wyfies te sien, seker die gefrustreerde nooiens van die stoute SYLVESTER wat net die vorige Vrydag na Addo geskuif is. Ons was min maar dit was LEKKER !

KAROO NASIONALE PARK – 28/29 Mei 2016 Deur George Marx

Die uitstappie na die Karoo Nasionalepark was n wonderlike ondervinding. Ek het nie gedink dat die Karoo so n mooi omgewing bied nie. Ek en Mariette het vir Chris en Nelie van Staden op 28 Mei 2016 om 08h00 by die Total garage, Grootbrakrivier ontmoet vanwaar ons vertrek het oor die Robertsonpas na Beaufort Wes. Ek het hierdie keer die Morris Minor 1000 laat rus vir die Erfenistoer, en met die 1961 Anglia gery. Jan Wright het laat weet dat hy en Anita met sy Morris Minor gaan ry en by ons gaan aansluit in Meiringspoort. In Meiringspoort het ons n lekker ontbyt genuttig, Nelie en Mariette het eers gou n besoek aan die waterval gebring terwyl ons gewag het op Jan se aankoms. Jan het egter later gery as wat ons verwag het, en met geen selfoon ontvangs het ons later gery, min wetende dat hy kort op ons hakke was. Voor Beaufort-wes was ons aangenaam verras toe Brian Zechlin met sy Anglia, Hannes Basson met sy 1950 Chev vragmotor, die alombekende Swannie met sy 1963 Ford asook sy vriend met n ses silinder Holden ons ingewag het. Swannie en sy vriend was juis weer op pad om na ‘n Austin te gaan kyk. As die ou-motor gogga jou eers byt dan is dit n blywende siekte. Die ontvangs by die Park was uitstekend en die diens van die beste. Die selfsorg eenheid in ‘n Kaaps-Hollandse styl bied ‘n ongelooflike uitsig oor die Park en sy berge. Ontbyt wat verskeie keuses bied was ingesluit by die huur van die eenheid. Ek en Mariette het die Saterdagmiddag die Klipspringerpas gery en verskeie wild gesien waaronder Rooi Hartebees, Volstruise, Zebras en die ongelooflike elegante Klipspringer. Die Klipspringer bly maar mooi as hy so trots op die hoogste punt van n rots staan en jou dophou. Saterdagaand het Jan en Anita Wright asook familie van hom [Kruger] by ons aangesluit en ons het Chris en Nelie se eenheid beset vir n ongelooflike lekker braai. Terwyl ons die middag wild

gaan verken het, het Nelie n gebakte nagereg voorberei. Dankie Nelie vir n lekker bederf. Op 29 Mei 2016 het ek en Mariette na n heerlike ontbyt vertrek. Chris was slimmer en het ook geboek vir die Sondag. Nou ja, daar is nog die werkersklas. Ek het vir oulaas n draai deur die Park gery op pad na die uitgang. Mariette het my snaaks aangekyk, want wie sal nou wild op die vlaktes verwag so na aan die dorp. Ons was aangenaam verras en het verskeie Rooi Hartebeeste gekry asook Volstruise, Zebras, Elande, Gemsbokke, Kudus, die grys Rhebok en die cherrie op die koek, n Leeu wyfie. So eindig nog n wonderlike uitstappie wat deur die klub gereel is., Baie dankie aan die bestuur vir n wonderlike naweek. Dit was elke sent die moeite werd. George Marx

DIE MILLIGAN TOERGROEP KUIER OP REEBOK. (Deur : Evert J. van Rensburg)

Op Dinsdag 14 Junie het ek by die Grootbrakse motorhawe lede van die Milligan toergroep ontmoet en het ons (sowat 20 motors) in konfooi gery tot by Kobus en Fienie Halliday se musem op Reebok. Die toergroep het bestaan uit ongeveer 68 lede en was verteenwoordigend vanuit al die provinsies. Later het Pierre Olivier, ons klubvoorsitter, ook by ons aangesluit. ‘n Pragtige versameling van veterane het gepronk voor die museum en ons kon terselfdertyd ‘n blik kry op hoe die ander klubs se motors lyk. Die ou veterane is en bly maar seker een van ons mooiste en kosbaarste erfenisse. (Sien meegaande foto’s). Ons het nie net die Halliday museum se baie mooi versameling geniet nie, maar ook baie nuwe vriende gemaak met lede vanuit die ander provinsies. Dit is ook altyd interessant om met ander kennis te maak en te gesels oor hul belangstellings en versamelings, asook watter tipe motors hulle besit en so meer. So word daar dan ook goeie inligting bekom en kennis uitgeruil. Elke versamelaar se

motor(s) het mos maar gewoonlik ‘n geskiedenis van hoe hy/sy dan daaraan gekom het. (Baie interessante stories). Die Milligan toergroep bestaan hoofsaaklik uit twee bene, naamlik die groep motors wat slegs die toer meemaak en ‘n ander groep motors wat deelneem aan die tydrenne. Nou ja, die tydrenne is nogal gekompliseerd – baie reëls en boekhouding of sal ek eerder sê kophou en tydhouding!! Een van die lede het ook op ‘n ligter noot met my gedeel hoe hy en sy vrou soms verskil oor tye, roetes en plekke!! Ha ha … Die Milligan toer se formaat het ook iewat verander. Daar word nie meer net getoer van punt A na punt B nie. ‘n Bestemming (plek van verblyf) word bepaal en dan word daar dagtoere onderneem na verskillende plekke en besienswaardighede. Die 2016 Milligan toergroep se basis was vanjaar in Mosselbaai en hulle het tuis gegaan by die Diaz strand hotel. Die toer het dan ook op Vrydag 17 Junie ten einde geloop. Volgens wat verneem word sal aanstaande jaar se toer vanuit Port Elizabeth plaasvind. Laastens wil ek ook net ons hartlike dank en waardering uitspreek teenoor Kobus en Fienie Halliday vir hul gasvryheid tydens die besoek. Soos ons hulle ken word geen moeite ooit ontsien nie en daarvoor sê ons baie dankie. Baie sterkte dan ook met die goeie werk en verhoudinge wat deurlopend gebou word met besoekers

landswyd, asook met ander klubs.

Points, Plugs & Condensers

We are advised by the experts to change the points, plugs and condenser on a fairly regular basis. This is true to a point as older cars invariably run a bit on the rich side and the plugs tend to foul-up long before they burn out.

These fouled up plugs can be the major cause of hard starting. It’s therefore wise to either clean the carbon off them or replace them with nice new shinny ones. The points also can wear out as they are opening and closing at a furious rate. However, many years ago a wise man, many years in the trade, said we can question replacing the condenser. When examining the points see if they have a metal build up on either side – if they have, replace the points and condenser. If they don’t show a build up rather keep the condenser and replace only the points. The build-up of metal on either of the points indicates the condenser is either over or under capacity. No wear on either side indicates the correct capacity – so why replace it? Good quality condensers like Lucas and Delco last for years but unfortunately are hard to find today. If you have any on the shelf hang on to them. Many of the modern replacements are of questionable quality. Whilst working on the distributor check if your distributor has a little fly lead that goes to the points. It’s a thin very flexible woven lead which enables the advance/retard plate on which the points are mounted to turn freely. If this is in anyway worn - replace it soonest. These leads, which have a limited life, are often hard to find. If you see any at flea markets we suggest you buy a couple and keep them as spares – you could need them one day.
