Robson gets no proper goodbye Unless strike settled no chance to grieve before bulldozer hitsGrant [email protected]

Unless the teachers strike is suddenly settled students at John Robson elementary won’t get to say goodbye to their school before it’s bulldozed.

Robson will be leveled this summer to make way for the new Fraser River middle school. The students will be transferred to the new Qayqayt elementary, expected to open in September.

Serena Trachta, chair of the Robson parent advisory council, said if the strike lasts until the end of the school year the students won’t get a chance to go through the grieving process of losing a building they learned and lived in for almost 200 days a year.

“It sounds superficial but at this elementary school age it’s a significant development to form attachments like that. This is that formative time when they’re doing that. We’ve gone ahead and gotten them attached and now we’ve abruptly terminated that.

Coun. Jonathan Coté wants Wayne Wright’s job.

And he isn’t waiting around to find out if New Westminster’s mayor will vacate the position without a fight.

Coté, 35, declared Wednesday he will run for mayor in the November civic election.

Wright said he is still contemplating whether or not to run for a fifth term. Coté said he had a conversation about the election with Wright last week, and “it had come to a point where I had

to make a decision.” “I have respect for Wayne and the

work he has done in the city, but I feel it’s time for New Westminster to make its next big step, especially with a new Official Community Plan and the implementation of the Master Transportation Plan.

“We worked well as a team on council, and I’m proud of the accomplishments as a whole over that time … I think I’m the right person to lead us through those changes in the next few years.”

If they face off against each other

there won’t be any animosity said Wright.

“Jonathan is the best educated, one of the most knowledgable councillors that’s ever sat in the

city of New Westminster. I can’t say anything different in that.”

The only issue they’ve differed on that Wright could remember was approving the Vancouver Biennale putting an art work featuring two transport containers at

Westminster Pier Park. For the voters, he said, it will

come down to a choice between

an experienced incumbent and a knowledgable newcomer.

Wright said he won’t declare his intentions until September, which is when he usually does it. If he doesn’t run it will be to spend more time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He said the fire is still in his belly to do the job, citing the work he did as co-chair on the TransLink mayors council transit plan announced last week.

“I’ve just come off working on the TransLink plan for 12 grueling weeks and we’ve come off so good,” said Wright.

“There’s no goodbye before it’s bulldozed, no ceremony,” said Trachta.

The same could be said for Hume Park, which will be shut down for budgetary reasons.

There had been discussions at Robson about giving the students the opportunity to say goodbye.

“[Last] Friday was their sports day, and everything was gearing up towards that, and then we were supposed to have two weeks getting this cleaned up and winding down to this time. It was a mad rush [last Friday],” said Trachta.

She noted a lot of equipment and supplies was put in boxes in

case of the strike. “What happens if the strike

ends? Everything’s packed up,” said Trachta.

“This process got short circuited, they got sent home with everything. Boxes are stacked up everywhere. Even if they go back, what are they going to be doing? What are they going to be working on?”

Trachta said Robson’s parents are upset and frustrated by the strike. They want to see more discussion between the province and the teachers on class size and composition.

The PAC is writing a letter to the Ministry of Education

calling for that conversation because larger classes with more special needs students have had a detrimental effect at Robson.

New Westminster superintendent/CEO John Gaiptman was in a sombre mood

when discussing the strike’s implication on the district.

“I am deeply concerned about morale,” said Gaiptman on Tuesday.

“I think everybody is in a tough, tough position. It’s a position that nobody wants to be in. Somehow,

we’ve got to make sure that this is the place that people want to be and are excited about the profession we’ve all chosen to be in. This has been hard on

everybody.”He said grade 10, 11 and 12

students are writing exams under the supervision of senior staff.

The Grade 12 exams will be sent to a central location to be marked.

The others will be marked by senior staff, principals and vice principals.

All Grade 12 students will get report cards and they will have all of their marks regardless if they were taking grades 10, 11 or 12 level courses.

“But if we don’t get back soon, we will not have report cards for our K to 11 students. That is difficult. It’s still being debated at the Labour Relations Board as to the Grade 10 and 11s, but

certainly our students in K to Grade 9 will not be receiving a report card if there is no resolution,” said Gaiptman.

He added summer school plans are still underway and students wanting to go should enrol.

But the district is still waiting to see if they’ll be allowed to hold summer school.

If there’s a quick settlement it will be a challenge for the district to get up and running on short notice.

It’s a challenge Gaiptman wants.

“If there is resolution in the next couple of days we will absolutely make it work.”

Coté said he’s been thinking about running for mayor for a number of years. He is finishing up his third three-year term on council after first being elected at the age of 26. He lives in Downtown New Westminster with his wife Alix and three daughters.

Along with his duties on council and working for ICBC, Coté recently completed his urban studies masters thesis at Simon Fraser University which he will be defending later this year.

Coté said doing the SFU program has given him a unique perspective on the issues cities face. It also increased his base of knowledge and connected

him to some of the more innovative ideas that have been used by cities around the world.

“This is an opportunity to take a leadership role not only in New Westminster but in the Metro Vancouver region,” said Coté.

His fascination with cities began at an early age when his father would occasionally take him to where he worked in Downtown Vancouver.

“I was so excited by the hustle and bustle of the big city,” said Coté. “I have a huge passion for cities and

the ability of cities to be able to tackle [many issues]. Local politics is a good way to actually create the change we need to see in the world.”

Coté has received the endorsement of former New Westminster MP and MLA Dawn Black. She has been a mentor for him ever since he went to her for advice before running for council in 2005.

“Jonathan has demonstrated a great understanding of our unique community and the needs and aspirations of the people who live here,” said Black in a Coté press release. “He has shown tremendous leadership at the council table and has the experience needed to lead our community.”

Coté has eyed a mayoral run a long time

ART IN THE LIBRARYWildlife graces the walls of the New Westminster Public Library in two very diff erent art shows.

On the Ramp, Tamara Sale returns with a new exhibition of wildlife photographs entitled The Merganser Sisters and More. All photographs are local taken at Tamara’s preferred locations of Piper Spit on Burnaby Lake and Fraser Foreshore Park.

In the Reference Department, Colleen Harrington presents her show Ravens with Roses. The focus of the show is the watercolour birds, which were inspired by the ravens of London. Ravens are treated like royalty in the Tower of London since legend has it that should there be no ravens in the Tower, the Monarchy will fail. Her 3-dimensional roses provide colour and contrast to the black of the birds.

The art can be viewed at any time during library open hours. The New Westminster Public Library is located at 716 6th Avenue; 604-527-4660; www.nwpl.ca

Priority to walking, cycling, transit, and holds line on vehicle trafficGrant [email protected]

New Westminster’s draft master transportation plan (MTP) aims to increase the number of walkers, cyclists and transit users in New West, while not adding any regional traffic to its streets.

After more than two years of open houses and analysis, the draft was revealed to city council Monday. It puts feet at the top of its transportation hierarchy followed by bicycles, transit, commercial vehicles and cars.

“This plan addresses a lot of the issues that surround transportation in New Westminster. Certainly there are no easy solutions to the transportation issues in New Westminster,” said MTP task force co-chair Coun. Jonathan Coté.

The 228-page MTP sets a goal of at least 50 per cent of all trips in New Westminster being by foot, bicycle or transit by 2031 and 60 per cent by 2041. Currently there are about 167,000 local trips per day made by New West residents by those modes of transportation. If the trend were to continue it would increase to 250,000 by 2041, and local car trips would remain stable at about 100,000.

The plan is counting on no additional through traffic because reducing regional car trips is part of TransLink’s strategy. The report admits the city will have to work closely with other municipalities and jurisdictions to make sure New West doesn’t get any more traffic than it

does today. The city aims to reduce the

average distance travelled by car by a third to approximately 6.5 km per day by 2041. A 2011 estimate had residents driving 10km a day.

Three quarters of the city’s streets have sidewalks, about 255 kilometres’ worth. The plan calls for filling in the gaps with priority going to streets close to schools, SkyTrain stations, parks and within the Downtown core and other areas with lots of pedestrians.

MORE, BETTER SIDEWALKS

It suggested more sidewalk maintenance, repaving, improving surface quality, widening sidewalks, increasing accessibility, building boulevards and buffers between pedestrians and vehicles, and removing obstructions.

Building areas that promote pedestrian usage is another of the plan’s policies.

“Pocket parks and plazas, enhanced landscaping, public art, street trees, litter and recycling bins, benches, curb extensions, weather protection, and pedestrian-scale street lighting are examples of good public realm features,” said the report.

MORE CYCLING

Cycling accounts for one per cent of trips in New Westminster, most averaging less than five kilometres. The MTP wants to encourage more bike usage for short trips by developing a safe, comprehensive bicycle network that is time competitive with other ways of getting around.

Last Tuesday morning, Janet Grant got a phone call from her boss John Gaiptman, New West’s superintendent of schools.

Grant, SD40’s director of instruction, was told Alissa Arnold’s French immersion kindergarten class from Lord Tweedsmuir elementary was at Science World, which was now in lockdown.

Earlier, a man had been shot in Yaletown. There’d been an exchange of gunfire with police and he’d fled on a bike. Further along, outside Science World, more bullets flew, leaving the shooter and an officer injured.

On Twitter, people shared photos of the injured lying on the pavement, police vehicles, yellow tape. A dramatic scene, from a distance.

Grant was asked to help coordinate the response at Tweedsmuir.

As she would later learn, the adults opened the door to exit Science World and were about to guide the group of five and six years olds onto the plaza when they heard gunshots. They quickly rushed back inside, where they huddled in the gift shop, away from the windows.

Meantime, at Tweedsmuir, principal Patti Farris had a visitor, school police liaison officer Const. Carmel Keenan. At their meeting they were discussing, among other things, lockdown protocols.

Arnold’s first call came from the gift shop: Science World was in full lockdown. The kids were all safe.

Over the next hour or so, Arnold called frequently with updates, aware that parents who had heard the news would be anxious.

“She was a star through the whole thing,” Grant told me. “I cannot say enough about this teacher.”

Later, Arnold called to say the kids had been moved into the theatre, where they were watching Journey to the South Pacific and enjoying popcorn.

At such a tender age, how

much did they understand what was happening? That’s a mystery.

Meanwhile, back in New West, a team of people were preparing for the students’ return.

“We didn’t want our response to make them think they should be upset,” said Grant.

Counsellors from other schools were called in to help.

As parents arrived to pick up their kids, they were ushered into the learning centre for a briefing with Jane Osborne, a middle school counsellor. Another counsellor was ready in case Mme. Arnold or Val Keith, the educational assistant who accompanied the field trip, needed support upon their return. Having held it together throughout the incident, they might feel an emotional whiplash when it was over.

In the learning centre, parents were urged to project calm to their children.

As Ms. Farris would say in the letter sent home to all parents later in the day, it was best to avoid media coverage and not probe about the incident. If your child brings it up, by all means respond, but don’t unduly inflate their experience.

“I think our sense was right,” Grant said, “that parents might be more traumatized… as they knew the full extent of the situation.”

Another concern: What if the media swooped in with cameras and microphones just as the kids arrived in their school bus?

Grant anticipated this, and police were there to keep media at bay (which might have raised anxiety in itself, but perhaps was lesser of two evils).

When the children arrived back at school, the ever-calm Ms. Farris, who retires this month, greeted them.

The students and parents who accompanied them returned to their class, as they would normally do.

Food and drinks were awaiting them, as the lockdown meant they’d missed lunch.

Many were grateful for that. And then one girl said, ‘Hey,

Madame Arnold, what about my show and tell?”

So she called the kids over to the carpet, and they all participated in a routine they practise every day in their kindergarten class.

From lockdown to circle time

Take lead on transit

Building a transit system is expensive.

Not building one even more so.Last week the Mayors’ Council

of civic leaders from all the communities that comprise Metro Vancouver laid out an ambitious $7.5-billion plan to improve public transit in the region.

They’d achieve that with more buses, a light rail line that would eventually connect Langley City, via Newton, to the Expo SkyTrain line in Surrey, an extension of the Millennium Line to Arbutus with further expansion to UBC in the future.

They also pledged improvements to the HandyDart and SeaBus services, as well as the construction of new four-lane toll bridge to replace the Pattullo.

Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan voted against the plan. He called it a “wish list” that was overly “ambitious.”

Unless the provincial government gets on board with the plan and makes some tough decisions to see at least some of it to fruition, it might never be worth the reams of paper it’s printed on.

To pay for the plan, the mayors want the province to implement a tolling system in which motorists pay to travel anywhere in the region, whether or not they cross a bridge. That would generate enough revenue to allow TransLink to reduce its gas tax from 17 cents to 11 cents per litre.

So far Premier Christy Clark hasn’t commented on the mayors’ proposals.

She seems to be hedging transit’s future on the outcome of a referendum that still hasn’t got a date, or even a defined question.

The mayors had the right idea to present an integrated, comprehensive plan for transit in Metro Vancouver.

It’s time for the provincial government to put the wheels in motion to begin realizing it.

Otherwise it will just end up costing us more to keep building bigger roads.

COMMENTI’ve just returned from my

first visit to New York. We spent the week on Manhattan Island and still didn’t see all the sites.

What I did see was the restoration of many small theatres and the building of skyscrapers around these theatres.

I ask the question, how can the New York architects and politicians find ways to build around and save these old theatres and keep them in the city’s inventory, when the architects and politicians here in New Westminster can’t find a way to save Massey Theatre?

I took in a show at the Broadway Theater built in 1924—now surrounded by a skyscraper. Saw The David Letterman Show at the old Ed Sullivan Theater, built in 1927, which still has the cast-iron ticket booth in the lobby, surrounded by a skyscraper.

And I saw many more theatres saved from the wrecking ball.

Residents of New West want

a new high school—and sooner, not later.

And many are concerned with the possible burial sites under the Pearson wing of the high school.

But getting back to New York…

Manhattan was home to the Lenni-Lanape Nation of Indians, and was bought from them by the Dutch for approximately 60 guilder.

The First Nations are not forgotten in Manhattan—the name itself is a derivative of a Munsee Indian name Manna-hata. New York has the National Museum of the American Indian right on the island.

New Westminster has put up $6 million to the school district for added seating capacity in the new theatre to be incorporated into the new school.

Why can’t we build around the Massey Theatre, saving the cost to build a new theatre, retaining all the fly system and backstage space (not in the new plans) needed to put on

noteworthy events and shows and take the $6 million from the city and build a space dedicated to the history and people from the past, at the Pearson wing.

The Pearson site has had an army base and high school on that ground for many years.

There may not be anything left to find on the site.

Have an archaeologist and First Nations on site and collect what is found.

New Westminster could have the only space in the Lower Mainland dedicated to preserving the First Nations language, literature, history and art, and give the students a place to study New Westminster’s First Nations history.

Why not do it here?

And, as often happens, a calm descended as ritual took over.

The other parents were quietly ushered in from the learning centre and stood at the edges of the room.

“We wanted the children to have an end to the day that was very natural and normal,” said Grant.

A friend of mine was one of those parents.

When show and tell was done, he walked up to his son and casually said “How was your day, buddy?”

And he heard about the wonderful things kids learn at Science World.

About gravity and how rollercoasters work. And they even got to watch a movie.

Exactly the kinds of things that should happen when you go to a place like that.

A complete network would ideally place every resident and business within 500 metres of a bike route.

To making biking more convenient, the MTP proposes more secure on-street parking in key locations, retrofitting buildings with bicycle facilities, requiring shower facilities and lockers at workplaces, and implementation of a public bike sharing program.

UPTOWN TO DOWNTOWN

As for transit, the MTP recommends the city explore creating a free shuttle service between Downtown and Uptown in conjunction with the business improvement areas in those neighbourhoods or other partners.

The draft plan said New Westminster should work with TransLink to increase peak period service on Twelfth Street, Sixth and Eighth avenues and East Columbia. The city would also like to improve peak period service in Queensborough, Fraserview and Victoria Hill.

The MTP said Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth, Columbia and East Columbia streets and Sixth and Eighth avenues should be priorities for transit to reduce

bus service delays. The city can help make that possible with improved signal coordination, bus bulges and dedicated bus lanes. The plan also calls for safer and more accessible bus stops and shelters.

CREATING ‘GREAT STREETS’

The MTP also trumpeted the concept of Great Streets, places for people to be instead of being only places to move through.

Great Streets would have features that make them more comfortable to walk, rest and be active along as well as more attractive. The MTP identifies Twelfth, Sixth, Columbia and East Columbia streets and Eighth and Ewen avenues as potential Great Streets.

The MTP says right now the balance in some of those corridors favours motor vehicles. To change that around the plan recommends better pedestrian crossings, wider sidewalks, resting places, lighting, boulevards, public art and even streetcars on Columbia.

REGIONAL TRAFFIC ON FRINGE

The plan would like to see through traffic funneled

to major roads on the city’s periphery such as Tenth Avenue and Stewardson Way. Along with asking TransLink to remove Royal Avenue, East Columbia and East Eighth Avenue from the truck route network, the long-term goal is to also get them off of Front and Braid streets.

The plan lays out policies that would prioritize traffic calming and green streets in neighbourhoods.

The MTP suggested timeframes of two to five years to develop many of the projects, although the ideas for goods movement are long-term projects.

“This is a wish list, but in many respects it’s only a wish list in relation to how hard we work to convince people this is the right thing to do,” said Harper. “You have to make it really easy for people to get out of their cars. Either that or make gas $3 a litre.”

A final open house on the draft plan is to be held next week, although no time or place has been announced. The final draft will also go to other agencies such as TransLink and adjacent municipalities for comment. Final adoption is expected in September.

Councillor wants to break cycle to spend more time with familyGrant [email protected]

Whoever is elected mayor in New Westminster won’t have at least one familiar face at the council table.

While Coun. Jonathan Coté has declared his candidacy for the mayor’s chair and Mayor Wayne Wright hasn’t made up his mind yet, Coun. Betty McIntosh has decided not to run.

McIntosh, 63, said she would like to spend more time with her grandson and travel in the trailer she and her husband Ken recently bought. She said having to go through so many reports and so many meetings was a cycle she’d like to break.

McIntosh has served

five terms on council. In the latest one she was the only councillor not to have received New Westminster District Labour Council support.

“I’ve helped bring a balanced opinion and a questioning that I don’t take everything at face value, I have a critical eye,” said McIntosh.

The McIntosh name, however, might remain at the council table. She said her son Scott, 39, will run for council. He

built a new house in New Westminster that required dealing with a lot of bureaucracy.

“He’s got his opinions on how city hall should work,” said McIntosh.

She believes there could be a significant change coming on council. That’s over and above the fact there will be at least two new councillors since she’s not running

and Coun. Jonathan Coté has entered the mayor’s race.

“I don’t believe the incumbents are going to be reelected, it’s as simple as that. I know there are other people who will be coming forward,” said McIntosh. “I’ve heard a lot of criticism about how this council has been treating people in the community. You’re never assured a seat, and I’m hoping there’s a greater balance than what there has been.”

In her opinion council has been too wrapped up in fighting the provincial government.

“When so much partisan politics is coming into the chamber it’s not benefiting the community,” said McIntosh, who worked as an emergency nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital. “You might not agree with [a provincial] minister but you’ve got to be

respectful.”She has been

involved in the community since she had “a new babe” in her arms when she joined a parents

group at Richard McBride elementary. In 1993 she ran for school board and then council three years later. She lost in 2002 but returned in 2005.

Except for 2008 when she joined the Voice New Westminster slate, McIntosh has campaigned as an independent.twitter.com/lonegrangerbnw

McIntosh won’t run for reelection

Safety Tip:As schools begin their summer break, there will be more children around the roads. Road safety is not always top of mind for kids, so make sure you pay extra attention, especially around

playgrounds where speed limits remain in effect year-round.

Question of the WeekFour-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel got behind the wheel of a kart when he was just three-and-a-half years old and was racing at age eight. Should we encourage teens to follow that example, as a way of learning about vehicle speed and control before getting their first license at 16?

Hot laps with F1 World Champ Sebastian VettelBOWMANVILLE, Ontario. Four-time Formula One world champion Se-bastian Vettel has been driving since 1991 – 20 years less than yours truly. The Infiniti-Red Bull Racing Team lead man was only three-and-half years old when he took the wheel on a kart in his native Germany. He began racing four years later at the ripe old age of eight. He has a few years under his safety harness but he’s always up to learn from his elders.Last year, the 26-year-old wunderkind showed off his driving skills to me and buddy Brian Makse – a man also with racing pedigree – in an Infiniti FX50 Vettel Edition FX on the Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France. We both figured his cornering needed work. Seb’s seat time with us clearly paid off as thereafter he won his fourth straight F1 championship. It came as no surprise then that he would jump at the opportunity to take the wheel again alongside me. Brian wasn’t available but I headed here to the Canadian Tire Motorsport in Ontar-io to work the magic again. The affable young guy has had a tough start to the F1 season, battling with the new hybrid technology.I put in some time first with retired F1 driver and now ace BBC TV F1

commentator David Coulthard on an auto cross track, laid out in the shape of the Infiniti logo. As I finished my turn at the wheel of the Infiniti Q50, the Scot sent me off to Seb with the words: “No cones were hurt in this filming . . . ”I’ll take that as a compliment for my error-free drive.Buckled up in anoth-er Q50S ($47,450), I wondered if Seb would demonstrate an improved cornering technique as we did a hot lap together around the reputedly fast 3.95-kilometre track. He

greeted me warmly, I thanked him for a hat he had kindly autographed, which I recently auctioned off. He was pleased to hear it had raised hundreds of dol-lars to help send local leukemia-strick-en teen Ryan Fagnan and his family on a last vacation, shortly before he died. We roared out of the pit lane through the first turn and continued to accel-erate downhill – close to 170 km/h – towards the second turn. Locals told me the stretch to the turn features a number of camber changes down to the second turn, scene of most of the track’s fatal crashes. Gulp.Obviously, nobody had cautioned him as he whipped the family sedan effortlessly round, talking about how he relaxed as we drove. Movies with happy endings apparently. Ah, the same conclusions he likes to F1 races.

“There haven’t been too many of those lately,” he joked, pressing harder on the metal, perhaps to make a point. As Infiniti Director of Performance, Vettel is truly playing a role in the development of future road products, rather than merely offering his name as a celebrity endorsement. He talked enthusiastically about the new com-pact, performance-oriented Q30, which should see the light late next year in Europe and a little later in Canada. The 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 Q50S we were riding in also benefitted from a little of his input. He’s clearly looking forward to Infiniti giving the go-ahead to the Q50 Eau Rouge concept, which features the Nissan GT-R’s growling 560-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Another corner loomed and I leaned into the door, as he barely slowed from the rapid pace we had zipped along the straight. “Your cornering has improved since last year,” I offered cheekily.

“Thank you, I think I’ve got the apexes about right,” he grinned. Hours earlier, it’s doubtful he had even heard of the tricky track, nevermind driven it. Harkening back to his references to happy endings, I reminded him that after driving with me last year he had enjoyed nothing but success.“That’s right . . . it’s all down to you,” he said with what I believed was a thoroughly genuine smile of appreci-ation.The end was nigh. Time flies when you are having fun: our hot lap and friendly chat took less than four minutes.Last Sunday, he enjoyed only his second podium finish of the year taking third place at the Montreal Grand Prix. You’re welcome, Seb. Same time next year, in the Eau Rouge?

By Zack SpencerDriveway

With a flash of lightning beside our car, my co-pilot Alexandra Straub let out a screech as loud as the ac-companying crack from the massive flash. Pouring rain in our tiny car made the very first day of the 2014 Mazda rally one to remember. The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) is a car most would associate with sunny, summer top-down driving but this little machine was determined to show what it was made of. The howling wind, torrential rain and debris-covered roads were all taken in stride as we carved our way through the Tennessee mountains on our way to the Brasstown Valley Resort in neighbouring Georgia. Over three days, we experienced the MX-5 on some of the most dramatic and scenic roads this continent has to offer.Last year was the inaugural Mazda Rally, which Alexandra and I won, taking home $10,000 in charity money for Kidsport. As last year’s champions, we had extra pressure to repeat, something we soon learned would be much tougher than we had imagined. If you ever take a drive through the south east of the United States, do yourself a favour and divert away from the interstate highway system and experience driving nirvana, traversing

the Blue Ridge, Unico and Smokey Mountain ranges. The lush National and State parks along with small towns and twisting river valleys is something to experience. This is a destination for drivers too, especially the “Tail of the Dragon”, a section of highway 129, just inside the North Carolina border that has 318 turns over an 18km stretch. This is a favourite of motorcycle riders but open to anyone wanting to experience back-to-back corners ranging from very tight to wide, sweeping turns. Our run up this road was wide open thanks to steady rain.Paved roads are the place the MX-5 shines, wet or dry. It never felt like the car was out of control, even on the fastest and most aggressive corners. There is so much goodness dialled into this little car that it rewards the driver and passenger hour-after-hour. With a front engine, rear drive setup and perfect weight distribution, the MX-5

has been one of my all-time favourite cars because of its simplicity. The small, light, thrifty dimensions matched to a raspy 2.0L 4-cylinder and 6-speed manual makes for a fantastic power-to-weight distribution, meaning the 160hp engine might not sound like much on paper but, in practice, it makes the most of every situation. One thing Mazda’s event planners has us do was

drive and collect informa-tion for each day’s challenges. All were kept secret until the beginning of each drive, including the roads we might travel. A surprise: some sections were unpaved. Taking Mazda’s brand new MX-5 through backroads at speed meant rocks flying, branches felled from the previous night’s storm kicking up, sliding sideways through corners and pounding over rough and rutted gravel. At the end, the MX-5 showed no signs of wear. Over the three-day event, Alexandra and I didn’t have one disagreement, I made some navigational errors and so did she. We let it roll, these were long days and we hoped small glitches wouldn’t impact our score much. At the end, we had slipped from second place after the first day to fifth place. Sadly, next year we won’t be able to proudly display the number one on the side of our Black Press [email protected]

2014 Silverado an ideal truck for the big truck guyBy Ian Harwood Driveway

You can feel your voice get deeper when you climb aboard this big guy.The 2014 Chevy Silverado HD I tested recently featured a 6.6-litre Duramax Turbo V8 diesel engine, mated to an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission, capable of putting out 397 horses and provides 765 lb ft of torque. It gets deeper. This guy can carry up to 1706 kg and tow up to 8119 kg. And the truck box has load-bearing upper hooks rated to hold 113 kg each.InteriorThe interior is very well organized, comfortable leather 12-way front bucket seats that are heated and cooled. The rear seats are a 60/40 split. Heavy use of dark wood burl is very prominent and gives the truck a different level of sophistication. The navigation screen is positioned perfectly and is easy to program without distracting you from the road. Steering wheel controls help with radio functions and incoming phone calls. The dash could have been better, lots of plastic and not that appealing. SafetyThere is a single-stage driver and front passenger airbag. An OnStar protection service is available, and offers direct communications between emergency services and the vehicle. An electronic immobilizer is standard equipment and prevents the vehicle from being started without the key. Forward collision alert, lane departure warning and safety alert driver seat are all standard.RoadworthyThe steering is direct and responsive and makes driving a large truck very easy. There is no fighting the steering wheel—a problem with other trucks in this category. The cab is quiet with little road or tire noise. The diesel engine is a little noisy but not a big concern. The EZ lift tailgate is a nice feature, especially opening with one hand.Towing CapabilityThis vehicle can tow up 8,119 kg and combined with the improved trailer sway control makes towing enjoyable. The stabilitrak control system can sense if your trailer is swaying and help control it by combining the power of the engine and the braking system to keep the trailer under control. The rearview camera is a nice touch helping to align the trailer during hookup. Hill start assist is a good feature and helps prevent you from rolling back on a hill by maintaining brake pressure until the engine delivers enough torque to move the truck up the hill.Fuel economy15.8/10.2 L/100 km (city/highway)VerdictNot too long ago driving a heavy duty truck with a diesel engine meant you were in for a bumpy ride, not to mention the noise and smell of diesel fuel. Not now. Fast forward to today and the ride is smooth, the noise is greatly reduced and you can hardly smell the fuel. These trucks still work hard as ever, but are also used as mobile offices, meeting rooms, and for family outings.

New West drummer plays Buckingham PalaceParticipates in changing of the guard ceremony with Vancouver Police Pipe Band in LondonMario [email protected]

A New Westminster drummer is marching into history.

John Briggs, who works at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus, is in England with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band which is participating in the venerable changing of the Queen’s guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

It’s the first time a non-military band has performed in the ceremony, which has been a daily tradition in London for 350 years.

“It is literally the most incredible experience I’ve ever had,” said Briggs, who’s played in pipe bands for almost 50 years. “Nothing will ever top this in my life for sure.”

The band is scheduled to participate in four ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and two at

Windsor Castle during its time in England.

The band was also given

the opportunity to play in the forecourt at St. James Palace as the Queen’s guards who are

completing their 24-hour shift formed up for the eight-minute march down The Mall to Buckingham Palace.

That’s the first time a pipe band has played in the forecourt since the St. James Palace was built as the London residence for King Henry VIII in 1536, explained Briggs in an email. Normally the military bands only start playing when the march off down The Mall commences.

“There are thousands of people lining the streets every day to see this,” said Briggs.

To stay in step for its official duties, on Monday the band marched from Wellington Barracks, near Buckingham Palace, to Green Park where it lay a wreath at the Canadian War Memorial.

The trip to England is a highlight of the pipe band’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Scott McAlpine is no longer president of Douglas College.

Dave Taylor, a spokesman for the post-secondary institution, said McAlpine has left the college to pursue other opportunities. Taylor said McAlpine was not fired by the board of directors.

“Dr. McAlpine has made significant contributions over the last five years during which time Douglas College has seen considerable growth,” said Taylor. “We all wish him the best in his endeavours.”

Taylor said Kathy Denton, vice-president of academics, will take over on an interim basis until a replacement can be found.

McAlpine, 57, was hired in August 2009. The Waterloo, Ont., native came to Douglas after 20 years at Grande Prairie Regional College in Alberta where he’d risen from political science instructor to vice-president. He has a PhD from

the University of Calgary. He replaced Susan Witter, who retired after 12 years at Douglas.

Anvil Centre opens Sept. 14The grand opening of the Anvil Centre civic

facility in Downtown New Westminster will be held Sunday, Sept. 14.

The opening of the Anvil Centre, which had a $41.5 million price tag, will run from noon to 6 p.m. with the official ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m.

The centre has space for conferences, a 364-seat theatre, a new media gallery, the city museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

The city has also announced the Wait for Me Daddy War Memorial statue will be unveiled at Hyack Square at 11 a.m. on Oct. 4.

It’s a bronze sculpture based on an iconic photo taken at that spot almost 75 years ago. Canada Post will launch its Wait for Me Daddy commemorative stamp that day. The city museum will also have a Wait for Me Daddy exhibit.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

By Kerry Vital

Nanaimo’s Melissa Tolsma describes herself as a “reluctant renovator.” If something isn’t broken, there’s no need to fi x it, and duct tape can fi x anything that is broken.

However, when she saw the opportunity to enter last year’s Reno Me! with FortisBC contest and win $10,000 towards a renovation with natural gas, she decided that her outdoor space could use a bit of sprucing up.

Aft er winning the contest, her renovation adventure began. Tolsma notes that she’s always cold, so having the warmth of natural gas was tops on her priority list.

Currently, one of the most popular options

that use natural gas is a fi re pit, which will be an integral part of Tolsma’s renovation and something she is particularly looking forward to.

“My eight-year-old daughter is very excited about having a year-round s’mores facility right in the backyard!” Tolsma says.

According to FortisBC, outdoor natural gas fi replaces and fi re pits allow you to spend more time outdoors, even in the cooler months. Th ey’re also more convenient for homeowners, who won’t have to spend time chopping wood or dealing with uncontrolled smoke and fumes or spitting embers. Like all natural gas appliances, they provide instant heat and are available in a variety of styles.

Tolsma’s cast concrete fi re pit, from Solus Decor, is expected to arrive soon, and contractor Brad Fraser of Jonker Custom Building has been hard at work.

“Brad is working on two cedar benches to be installed next to the fi re pit,” Tolsma says. “I’ve had fun spending way too much time on Houzz, gathering ideas and images that have really helped to shape the project.”

Th e fi re pit is just the beginning of Tolsma’s ongoing outdoor space renovation.

“I’m going to have my licensed gas contractor extend the gas line to accommodate a gas barbecue and heater in the future,” says Tolsma.

FortisBC notes that a natural gas barbecue

can be extremely convenient for homeowners looking for fuel on demand, as you’ll never have to deal with running out of propane or charcoal. It also allows you to cook with diff erent temperatures at the same time and control the heat more easily.

Natural gas barbecues use fl exible hoses that connect to the home’s natural gas supply and have a built-in shutoff . Th is quick-connect feature makes it simpler to attach as well. Another benefi t is that cooking outdoors will keep your home cooler during the warm summer months.

Photos submitted by FortisBC, above and top right, and Melissa Tolsma, rightBarbecuing with natural gas is extremely convenient, as it uses the home’s natural gas supply and homeowners are able to grill with several different temperatures. Reno Me! with FortisBC contest winner Melissa Tolsma is looking forward to the installation of her new natural gas fi re pit as part of her natural gas renovation.

Natural gas possibilities inspire renovators

Renderings by Sarah Gallop Design Inc., above, and Jonker Custom Building, belowAs part of Tolsma’s win, she received a rendering of her outdoor space from Sarah Gallop Design Inc. After hiring Jonker Custom Building, she worked with contractor Brad Fraser to make the plans fi t her space and her lifestyle.

In addition to using natural gas for outdoor living, Tolsma is including a new deck in her outdoor space renovation.

“Th e deck is built with locally harvested cedar, and has a lovely, earthy West Coast feel to it,” she says. “Brad even built a custom raised garden box with some of the left over lumber. I’ve been busy with some landscaping and gardening work, so it’s all starting to come together.”

Another option for using natural gas outdoors is a hot tub, with its consistent, fast heat and automatic safety shut-off controls for added peace of mind. Plus, avid swimmers will be glad that natural gas can also heat swimming pools.

Th e possibilities for natural gas use outside continues to inspire renovators. Depending on where you live, natural gas patio heaters keep you warm outdoors, even in the fall and winter. Th ey use radiant heat to warm objects around them, according to FortisBC, and are connected to your home’s natural gas supply. You can also fi nd natural gas patio lamps that can be used to light walkways, patios and other outdoor entertaining spaces. Th ere are models available that provide bright steady light or ambient natural glow, so you’re easily able to create the mood you want for entertaining.

Natural gas is a convenient choice for more than just spending time outside.

Th e inside of Tolsma’s home is heated with natural gas as well.“With a small house like mine, I love that my gas furnace can heat the

house to a comfortable temperature within a few minutes,” says Tolsma. “I don’t have a fi replace inside, so I’m looking forward to having a natural gas fi re feature on my new deck.”

Whether you’re upgrading your heating system or extending natural gas to the backyard, you’ll need the services of a licensed natural gas contractor. Find someone qualifi ed in your neighbourhood at fortisbc.com/fi ndacontractor.

Th e cost to operate natural gas appliances is very aff ordable. Natural gas rates continue to cost less than it would cost to run with electricity. Don’t believe it? FortisBC has an online energy calculator that will help you compare the cost of fuel sources and their energy effi ciency, demonstrating that natural gas is an aff ordable choice for homeowners. Find it at fortisbc.com/energycalculator.

Tolsma is blogging throughout her renovation. Find her blog on your local Black Press newspaper’s website, or at www.bclocalnews.com/business/realestate.

“I’m looking forward to having a deck launch party next month, and I will be inviting all my awesome family, friends, co-workers and neighbors who helped me win,” Tolsma says. “Th ere will be burgers and s’mores galore!”

You too could enjoy natural gas in your backyard. Enter FortisBC’s Endless Summer Nights Contest for your chance to win a $10,000 natural gas dream patio. But hurry, the contest closes June 30, 2014.
