DREAMNAVIGATION Interview with Dr Kang Owner of Kang Eastern Medicine

JPy supports women who follow their dreams in LA and we interview them in each of our issues This month we will be interviewing the owner of Kang Eastern Medicine Dr Kang Her clinic in Pasadena specializes in helping women with their health problems We had a chance to ask her about her encounter with Oriental medicine and her future goals

What was the story behind you opening a clinic in AmericaI was born and raised in Tokyo I was going to an all-girls school but

I always felt like I didnrsquot really belong there At that time I sought my

mother for advice and told her that ldquoI wanted to go to Americardquo She

responded saying ldquoWhy donrsquot you try itrdquo and let me do a study abroad

program in California where our relatives lived I decided to stay after the

program and went on to university in the States After graduating from

university I started working as a flight attendant However I suddenly

became ill and no doctor could seem to tell me what was wrong with

me I had no clue what was the cause of my poor health condition and

I felt so defeated because none of the treatments were effective Thatrsquos

when I came across Eastern medicine I tried acupuncture and Chinese

medicine and they completely improved my condition Since I had such

an amazing result through the acupuncture treatments I wanted to

learn more about it So I enrolled myself in university that taught

Oriental medicine got an acupuncture license in Japan returned to

the US to study at Yosan University which is known for their acu-

puncture program When you visit a hospital when you get sick they

usually prescribe you a ton of medicines But those medicines have

side effects and sometimes they can cause you skin disease or to be an

anorexic However acupuncture and Chinese medicines have no side

effect Not only it healed my illness but I became more stable men-

tally and physically In Western medicine for example when you have

a stomachache they prescribe you medicines to cure the pain How-

ever in Eastern medicine we focus on the reason why you are having

a stomachache and try to heal the whole body I was inspired by that

idea ldquoto improve the symptoms by adjusting the balance of the bodyrdquo

and wanted to cure people through Eastern medicines

Please tell us about your clinic ldquoKang Easter MedicinerdquoKang Easter Medicine is a clinic specializing in solving womenrsquos

health problems by using Eastern medicines such as acupuncture

and Chinese medicines We often receive inquiries about the anti-

aging treatment and the infertility treatment Since acupuncture

enhances the function of internal organs and increases metabo-

lism itrsquos also effective for rejuvenation Acupuncture is highly ef-

fective for stress which is one of the major causes of infertility I

focus on helping my patients to relax and also to re-balance their

body to prevent illnesses As an example you might think you

just have a stiff neck but stiff neck can be a sign of something

severe You might feel very tired or have a hard time sleeping at

night But whatever it may be I would like to work closely with

my patients and look for the cause of the symptoms together

Whatrsquos rewarding about your jobI definitely feel happy when my patients thank me My ultimate goal

as a healer is to heal my patients and make sure they are healthy So

when my patients thank me after their conditions got improved I

feel like I want to appreciate them back It is also rewarding when a

patient suffering from insomnia tells me that she had a good night

sleep and even snored or when a patient says ldquoI felt like I was at a

spardquo because that means the treatments were so relaxing It is also

a pleasure when a patient who was going through infertility treat-

ments drops by at the clinic with her brand-new baby

What are your current goals you haveSince acupuncture is still a bit of a mystery to many people I

want to continue creating a welcoming environment so that peo-

ple would feel comfortable visiting the clinic I opened the sec-

ond clinic this year but I would love to open more in the future

I want to bring awareness to the fact that Eastern medicine can

help prevent diseases When I first opened the clinic there were

nights when I could not sleep because I was constantly thinking

about what I could have done better for my patients I felt pres-

sured like I had to heal all of my patients However I realized that

no two humanrsquos bodies are the same Irsquove learned to help them

individually with my knowledge and experiences Obviously we

cannot change the past no matter how hard we try So I focus

on whatrsquos going to happen tomorrow not what had happened

yesterday I keep this in mind moving forward as a healer

Any messages for JPy readersI think as a woman we all want to stay young and beautiful As

we get older beauty only shines through if you polish yourself

inside Some of my patients who come in for cosmetic acupunc-

ture treatments only request to get their faces done However

I think the meaning of true beauty is to balance the whole body

not just the concept of making the appearance look younger

I think many of us are guilty of not taking care of ourselves

enough when life gets hectic But please do not take your health

for granted I encourage you to listen to your body Fatigue and

edema can be a sign that your body is trying to warn you some-

thing Women can create a younger appearance with make-ups

and clothes but their internal organs age just like they age

every year I would like to help women who suffer from those

imbalances of their appearance and real aging of their internal

organs Ultimately patients are the ones who cure their own

bodies not the hospital nor the doctor ldquoYou make an effort

to cure yourselfrdquo --With this idea in mind I will continue to

spread Eastern medicines in the future

Dr Myeongae Kang DAOM LAcOriginally from Tokyo Dr Kang came to America during her high school years After graduating from Arizona State University she started working as a flight attendant Thatrsquos when she suddenly became ill and came across Eastern medicines which healed her completely Since she was so impressed with the power of Eastern medicine she decided to study it and got an acupuncture license in Japan After returning to the US she got another acupuncture license and earned a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Yosan University which is known for their acupunc-ture program She has opened the first clinic in July 2007 and just opend her second location in Pasadena this Fall

アメリカで開院された経緯を教えて下さい

東京で生まれ育ち女子校に通っていましたが当時いわゆ

るldquo女子校カルチャーrdquoに馴染めない気持ちがありましたそ

んな時母に「アメリカに行ってみたい」と相談すると「トライし

てみたら」と親戚のいるカリフォルニアに留学させてくれま

したそのまま米国で大学に進学しビジネスメジャーで卒業

後フライトアテンダントの仕事に就きましたしかし仕事で体

調を崩し色々な病院を訪ねても原因が分かりませんでした

体調不良の理由も分からず治療も効かず途方にくれていた

時期待もせず試してみた鍼と漢方ですっかり改善それが東

洋医学との出会いになりましたこれを機に自身で経験した鍼

治療の素晴らしさを学ぶため東洋医学の大学に入り直し日

本で鍼治療のライセンスを取得米国に戻ってからは鍼治療

で知られるYosan大学でも学びました病気になって病院に行

くとたくさんの薬が処方されますが時にその副作用で皮膚

病になったり食欲不振になったりすることがありますしかし私

は鍼と漢方が体に合い副作用もなく病気も治りさらには精

神的にも肉体的にもバランスが良くなりました西洋医学では

お腹が痛い時その痛みに効く薬が処方されるのが通常です

が東洋医学では何故お腹が痛いのかという観点で体全体を

治していくという考え方をします「体のバランスを整えること

で出ている症状を改善する」という東洋医学に魅力を感じこ

の療法で多くの方を健康にしたいと思い開業に至りました

東洋医学を代表する鍼や漢方で女性の悩みを解決するクリ

ニックです最近特に問い合わせが多いのはアンチエイジン

グと不妊治療鍼は内蔵機能を高め代謝を良くするので

若返りにも効果がありますそして不妊の大きな原因のひと

つであるストレスにも高い効果を発揮します私の治療は精

神的にリラックスして頂くことを目的にしたものなので 体調が

「何となくいつもと違うな」と感じたらすぐ来院して頂いて何

か症状が出る前に患者さんの心と身体のバランスを整えた

いと思っています肩こり一つにしても肩こりから来る症状も

あれば何かがおかしくて肩こりが症状として出ている場合

もあります疲れやすい眠れないなどちょっとしたことでも

一緒に原因を探して行くというのが私の治療スタイルです

お仕事をしていて楽しいことはどんなことでしょう

患者さんに「ありがとう」と言って頂けるのがやはり一番嬉しい

です治療家として患者さんに健康になってもらいたいという

想いで仕事をしているので症状が改善した患者さんに感謝

をされるとこちらまで感謝したい気持ちになりますまた不眠

症に悩んで来院して下さった患者様が治療後にはいびきを

かいて寝れるようになりましたと報告して下さったり「スパに

来る感覚で来ています」と言って下さったりリラックスして頂

いたと感じられる時は幸せに感じますそして不妊治療で通院

して下さっていた患者さんが無事に出産され赤ちゃんと一緒

に来院して頂くのもとても嬉しいです

今の目標を教えて下さい

鍼治療はまだまだマイナーな分野で限られた人だけが受け

ているというイメージがあるので多くの人に身近に感じて頂

けるような環境づくりをして行きたいです今年二件目のクリ

ニックをオープンすることになりましたがこれからももっと増

やして病気になる前に体の調子を整え病気を予防できる東

洋医学を多くの人に広めたいと思っています開業した当初は

「こうすればよかった」「ああすればよかった」と過ぎたことに

ついても考え眠れない日が続いたこともありました結果を出

さなくてはと思い詰め「妊娠させなきゃ」「完全に治さなきゃ」

とプレッシャーに感じていたのですしかし人間の体にマニュ

アルはなく同じ症状でも同じ病気でも人それぞれ知恵と経

験で解決して行くしかありません当たり前のことですが過去

は考えて変わるものではないので昨日のことではなく明日の

ことに目を向けて前に進み続ける治療家でありたいです

JPyの読者にメッセージをお願いします

「美しくなりたい」というのは多くの女性が持つ願いですが

表面だけ磨いても美しくなるのは難しいもの歳を重ねれば

重ねる程内面を磨いてからこそ表面に出る美しさがあると

思います美容鍼を受けたいと来られる患者様の中には顔

だけをご希望される方も多いですが「顔だけ美しく見せる」

という考え方ではなく体全体のバランスを整えて内面を

磨き結果として美しさが顔に表れるというのが本来の姿で

すまた忙しいと自分を大切にしないことがありますが 自

分の健康を過信しないことむくみやだるさなど自分の体か

ら出されたちょっとしたサインに耳を傾けるように心がけて

下さい外見はメイクやファッションで若作りできていても

内蔵は年相応というアンバランスな女性も増えているので

内面のアンチエイジングも助けてあげられるような存在でい

たいと思っています自分の体を最終的に治すのは病院で

も医者でも私でもなく患者さん自身そういった意味で「自

分で努力して治す」という意識を持たせることができるよう

にこれからも正しい東洋医学を伝えて行きたいと思います

取得2011年７月に最初のクリニックを開院し2014年9月に二つ目のロケーションをオープン

Louis Vuittonrsquos leopard print stoles are so great I always end up buying them every time they come out with a new one I screamed when I saw the new multicolored kind

I love that Gucci carries a lot of high-heeled shoes From the use of bamboo to the ornamental studs they do no wrong

1 ボウルに小麦粉とベーキングパウダーをふるい入れバターを加え指でつぶしながらサラサラになるまで混ぜる2 砂糖と塩を加えておおまかに混ぜベリー類とライスドリンクを加えカードで切るように混ぜたらまとめにする3 台に打ち粉をふり②を手のひらで3cm程の厚さにのばす4 ③を2つに分けて上に重ね再度3cmの厚さにするこれをもう一度繰り返す5 最後に2cmほどの厚さにして型を使ってくり抜く6 天板に間隔をあけて⑤を並べ表面にライスドリンクを刷毛で塗りグラニュー糖をふりかける7 摂氏210度（華氏410度）のオーブンで10分焼いて出来上がり

1 フライパンにくるみを入れて乾煎りしておく2 ボウルに（A）の粉類を入れて混ぜ合わせる3 別のボウルに（B）をすべて入れよく混ぜ②に加え合わせる4 煎ったくるみを加えてよく混ぜたら型に8割ほど流し入れる5 蒸し器に並べて20～25分ほど蒸すオーブンを使う場合は摂氏180度（華氏355度）で30分ほど焼く

1 ボウルにお湯砂糖ひとつまみ抹茶パウダーを入れてよく混ぜる2 鍋に豆乳と残りの砂糖を入れて温める熱くなってきたらゼラチンと①を加えてよく混ぜ沸騰する前に火を止める3 ②を濾して容器に流し入れる4 粗熱がとれたら冷蔵庫に入れて冷やす5 （A）を混ぜ合わせ粗熱を取る6 ⑤の抹茶シロップをプリンにかけて出来上がり

1 Roast the walnuts in a frying pan 2 Combine all the ingredients of (A) in a bowl and stir 3 In a different bowl put in all the ingredients of (B) Stir well and then stir into bowl (A)4 Stir in the roasted walnuts and then pour in 80 of the batter5 Place it in a steamer and steam for 20~25 minutesFor conventional ovens bake for 30 minutes at 355degF

1 Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl Add the butter and mix well with your fingers2 Quickly mix up the sugar and salt Add the berries and rice drink Mix together in a chopping motion3 Put ②rsquos batter on a board covered with flour and flatten out the dough to 1 inch in thickness4 Split ③rsquos dough in half place them on top of one another and flatten out to 1 inch in thickness again Repeat this again5 Flatten the dough to 08 inch in thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out the scones6 Line the scones onto the cookie sheet leaving enough space around each one of them Glaze them with rice drink and sprinkle with granulated sugar7 Bake at 410degF for 10 minutes

1 In a bowl add hot water a pinch of sugar and matcha powder Stir well2 In a pan heat up the soymilk with the rest of the sugar When it gets hot add the gelatin and ① Stir well Turn off the heat before it starts to boil3 Filter ② and pour into molds4 After it has cooled off a little put into refrigerator 5 Mix (A) and let cool6 Drizzle the syrup on top of the pudding

Sweet desserts seem to taste more delicious during fall season Desserts make anybody happy and we all love them but they can be a driving force behind the cause of cavities In this issue we asked the expert of beautiful teeth Dr Itoh what he thinks about those sweet devils

秋は甘〜いスイーツが特に美味しく感じる季節幸せな時間を演出してくれるみんなが大好きなスイーツですが時に虫歯を引き起こす原因の立役者となることもhellip今号は美しい歯の エキスパート伊藤先生にrdquo歯科医として考えるスイーツのあり方rdquoについてお話を聞きました

虫歯はバクテリア（細菌）によって引き起こされます口

の中には無数のバクテリアが存在していますこればか

りはどんなに美人な女性でもハンサムな男性でも皆

同じ様に持っているものですバクテリアは口の中に入っ

て来た糖分をエサとして繁殖しますその際排泄物とし

て酸を出します口の中に甘い物が入って来てから口の

中はどんどん酸性に陥り約20分でその酸度はピークに

達しますこの酸が歯の表面に付くと歯を溶かし始め虫

歯を引き起こしてしまうのです

スイーツを心から楽しむために気をつけたい4つのポイント

甘くて美味しい大好きなスイーツを思いっきりエンジョイするためには正しい知識を持ちましょう

4 Things to Keep in Mind When Enjoying Sweet Desserts

Cavities are caused by the bacteria There are countless bacteria inside of our mouths A beauti-ful woman or a handsome man it doesnrsquot matter everybody has them Bacteria breed using sugar that comes inside of the mouth as their bait And at that time acid gets issued as the waste When sweet food enters the mouth inside of the mouth gets more and more acidic and the acidity reaches its peak in 20 minutes When the acid attaches to the surface of the tooth it begins to melt that area

出来るだけ短時間でエンジョイし直後に歯磨きがベスト

食べたら口を濯ぐか歯ブラシをしましょうスイーツを食べた後出来るだけ20分

以内に歯磨きをする事が大切ですもし簡単に歯磨きができない状況であれば

水でぶくぶくうがいをするだけでもかなりの違いがあります

口の中に長く残る飴類キャラメル類はできれば避けましょう

バクテリアは唾液や水を飲む事によってある程度は洗い流されますがキャラメ

ルなどのお菓子類は歯の表面にこびり付き長時間にわたって糖分を供給し続

けるため歯磨きをする以外に取り除くのは難しいものですできるだけ短時間

でエンジョイできるスイーツを選ぶこともお勧めします

キシリトールの甘味料を使ったスイーツがあればベスト

キシリトールはバクテリアが消化出来ない為その餌とはならずバクテリアの繁

殖につながりませんまた虫歯を引き起こすバクテリアを減らすため虫歯に良い

とも言われています実際にキシリトールが50以上甘味料として含まれる商品

の中には歯科学会のお墨付きをもらっている商品もあるのです

シュガーレスの表示にご注意

シュガーレスと書いてある場合何が入っているのか注意する必要があります

シュガーレスというのは製造の過程で砂糖が使われていないという事ですが完

全にシュガーフリーでない場合もあります例えば砂糖の変わりに蜂蜜や果糖

サトウキビライスシロップ等が含まれている場合があるので注意が必要です

Brush your teeth immediately after consuming sweet foodRinse your mouth or brush your teeth after you eat If possible try brushing your teeth within 20 minutes after eating sweet food If you are away from a tooth brush and a tooth paste just rinsing your mouth with water can make a huge difference

Try avoiding long-lasting candies such as hard candies and caramelsAlthough bacteria get washed out to some extent by saliva or drinking water candies such as caramels are easy to stick to the surface of the tooth and continue to feed sugar for a long period of time Those are hard to get rid of unless you brush your teeth So I recommend you pick a desert you can finish relatively in a short period of time

Choose a dessert that was made with sweetener xylitol Bacteria cannot digest xylitol therefore it does not lead to the breeding of bac-teria In addition it is said that xylitol helps reduce the number of bacteria and prevent cavities Actually there are some products that use xylitol more than 50 of their sweeteners and they have got the endorsement from the Dental Society

Be careful of the ldquosugarlessrdquo labelsWhen a label says a product is ldquosugarlessrdquo you should pay close attention because you donrsquot know whatrsquos actually in it When they say ldquosugarlessrdquo which means sugar was not being used in the process of manufacturing but this does not always mean itrsquos completely sugar-free For example they might be using honey fructose sugar cane or rice syrup instead of the sugar
