Jette Lewinsky-Haapasaari (1948-1998)

On a short winter day, with the sun shining on the beautiful landscape covered with a thin layer of snow, Jette

Lewinsky-Haapasaari passed away in Kuopio, November 12th 1998, exhausted by the cancer against which she had fought since 1990.

Jette was born in Copenhagen on 13 March 1948 as daughter of a naval officer and the youngest of three sisters. She spent her childhood and adolescence in Bagsvaerd, then still a rural suburb of Copenhagen. The beautiful countryside close to the family home and her involvement in the girl guide movement nurtured her interest in natural history. In 1967 she finished grammar school, the science side, and was matriculated at the

university of Copenhagen the same year, studying biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biochemistry. The following year, 1968, she was employed at the Botanical Museum as a student assistant in the bryological herbarium. Whether Jette's interest in bryology was established before her employment I do not know, but from then on her future as a bryologist was an established fact. Beyond any doubt the inspiration from Kjeld

Holmen (1921-1974) was a decisive factor in her choice. Then curator of the bryological herbarium, Holmen was an enthusiastic, charismatic and always very carefully prepared teacher and guide on excursions. He

succeeded in encouraging several students to pursue studies in bryology -

among them Jette. Under Holmen's

guidance Jette and eight fellow students prepared a handbook of Danish bryophytes of which the first part "Den danske mosflora 1. Bladmosser" was published 1976 after a prodrome had been printed 1973; all species are illustrated with drawings by Jette or her fellow student Lennart Rasmussen.

In the 1960s and 1970s mapping of the flora of Greenland was carried out by Gr0nlands botaniske Unders0

gelse (Botanical investigation of Greenland) and with fellow students Jette took part in this work visiting the

Skjoldungen and Tasiilaq areas on the East coast in 1970 and 1971, respectively, and Ameralik-Fiord on the

West coast in 1973. The paper on the mosses from Skjoldungen was the first one Jette published. Jette contin ued mapping bryophytes from Greenland together with her colleague at the bryophyte herbarium, Gert Steen

Mogensen and published the results in a series of eleven papers. With Holmen as supervisor Jette graduated 14 February, 1973, with a paper on the family Plagiotheciaceae

in Denmark that was published in Lindbergia 1974. From June 1973 Jette, holding a scholarship at the Botani cal Museum, worked to get a licentiate degree (corresponding to a modern Danish PhD) still under the aegis of

Kjeld Holmen, the object of the study being Orthotrichaceae in Greenland. Despite Holmen's sudden death in December 1974, Jette obtained her degree in November 1976 with a paper on Amphidium and one on

Orthotrichaceae in Greenland. From 1 June 1975, Jette was appointed lecturer at the Botanical Museum, succeeding Holmen as curator at

the bryophyte herbarium. On June 1 1977, she was appointed associate professor. Jette took interest in the flora of the Faroe Islands and published with Dorte Boesen and Lennart Rasmussen

a checklist of the bryophytes of the islands in 1975. In 1985 she visited the islands, collecting specimens for the museum and for a bryophyte flora. She co-operated with the Faroese botanist Johannes Johannsen and organ

ized with him an excursion for the International Botanical Congress in 1987. Jette published six papers on

Faroese bryophytes, but the planned handbook for which she made several illustrations was never finished. With her first husband Jette went to Australia and New Zealand in 1973, returned 1979-1980 for six months

and again in 1987-1988 for a year. She collected specimens for the museum, studied Australiasian Orthotri chum and Zygodon species (the former with H.P. Ramsay) and also wrote (with J. Bartlett) about

Pseudoscleropodium purum in New Zealand. Until the very last Jette kept her connections with colleagues in both countries and contributed late in her life to the Flora of Australia (again with H.P. Ramsay).

Jette worked with other genera also; she published on Tortula, Leskeella and Pseudoleskeella, Leptodontium and Lindbergia, Weissia, Anisothecium and Glyphomitrium. These papers were often parts of her work with the bryophyte floras of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The core of Jette's work, however, was her revisions of the genus Orthotrichum.

"The family Orthotrichaceae in Greenland. A taxonomic revision", published in Lindbergia 1974, a part of Jette's work for the licentiate degree, was the first of ca 50 papers she published either alone or with colleagues about Orthotrichum and Orthotrichaceae. Having worked through the Orthotrichum species of the continents Jette summed up the research in 1993 in her Finnish dissertation: "Monographic studies on Orthotrichum

(Musci)". It consists of eight papers revising Orthotrichum species in Africa, Australasia, Southeast Asia, South America, Hawaii and Europe headed by "A Synopsis of the genus Orthotrichum (Musci, Orthotrichaceae)" 1978-1993. The genus is in this paper described as comprising 116 species and 11 varieties distributed among seven subgenera of which two were further subdivided into sections: Jette based the subdivisions on peristome evolution, which she had studied for many years. She described 20 new species and three new varieties and

made six new combinations. As with Jette's publications from the very first, many of the species are illustrated with her careful and graceful drawings. Jette assumed that the genus differentiated in the Gondwana continent in Triassic-Permian with a major speciation taking place in the Cretaceous.

One would expect this survey to be the then ill Jette's last word about Orthotrichum, based as it is on

classical taxonomic principles. But Jette of course wanted her ideas about relations between species and their evolution tested with cladistic analyses and these were carried out in cooperation with Lars Heden?s. The result was a new phylogeny; a single species was made a new genus, the remaining species were shown to

constitute a monophyletic group, tentatively divided into eight subgroups. Immersed stomata were shown to have developed twice and doubling of chromosome numbers with subsequent loss of one chromosome to have

happened once or twice within the genus. The analysis supported the hypothesis of Southern Hemisphere

origins for the group. This study, published shortly after Jette's death, shows, with other late and partly still

unpublished papers, that Jette until the very end kept intact the characteristics of a genuine scientist: Persever ance and willingness to change views in accordance with recognition of new facts or new analyses of known

facts.

Jette was curator at the bryophyte herbarium at the Botanical Museum, but also took care of other duties

there. The building housing the Botanical Museum was originally intended for public exhibitions, but such had never been made because of lack of space and money. In the 1970s she and her colleague Jette Baag0e made

plans for alterations to make the house suited for modern exhibitions and between 1986 and 1992 arranged six

temporary ones in the museum, either alone or with colleagues, treating themes like "Plants in the city",

"Botanical souvenirs" or "Genetic engineering - a natural matter". Jette did not only initiate these exhibitions,

with her artistic talent, taste and dexterity she literally built them up in close cooperation with the leading technician J0rgen Andersen. Jette's interest in communication of the botanical science to the public made her

the representative of the Botanical Museum in the Copenhagen Museum Council 1987-1992, and she was

instrumental in the establishment in 1986 of the school service, which arranges guided tours in the botanical

garden and teaches botany to school children, a cooperation between the museum, the botanical garden and the

municipality of Copenhagen. Jette was also elected leader of the museum 1983-1985, a difficult office, which

she discharged with efficiency and tact. Married to a colleague, Jette had two daughters born 1976 and 1980. Learning in 1990 that she suffered from

cancer she reorganized her life completely. She took leave from the museum 1 September 1992 (resigning 31

August 1994), divorced and moved to Kuopio in Finland, where she married Dr. Matti Haapasaari, leader of

the Museum of Natural History and colleague in bryology and arctic botany. The work with Orthotrichum

continued, leading to a Finnish doctorate in June 1993 and other papers. The work stopped only a few months

before her death. I first met Jette when she came to the Botanical Museum as student assistant to Holmen in 1968.1 know of

no one to whom the old proverb "suaviter in modo, fortiter in re" is better suited. In negotiations, in matters of

administration and of science she was sweet, but firm. She was always willing to listen, but only changed her

mind if she was convinced by arguments. She was a great diplomat, but never yielded for diplomatic reasons.

Jette could deviate from her principles for humane reasons, but then made a clear statement of them and

explained why she in this particular case discounted them. She never raised her voice, and if she disagreed with someone or about something she always told it politely and with consideration, but in a way which left no

doubt about her opinion. Jette seldom spoke much; her precision and sense of humour made it often possible for her to be brief. She had a most telling twinkle in her eyes (which one could sometimes fear), but when she

chose to talk her humour and love sparkled. She was also a very faithful friend. These traits in Jette's character became even more apparent when she fell ill. There is no pause in the list of

publications, the work continued. She left the museum, but connections to colleagues and friends were kept up. Letters in her characteristic handwriting and e-mails were frequent, informative, funny and long. She wrote

about her work, excursions, daily life in Finland, social events, about the garden and above all about nature and

the climate. No one, who reads these letters or visited Jette and Matti in their home or their summer cottage on

an island in one of the many lakes in Finland, could doubt the sources from which Jette replenished the strength she needed to fight successfully for so many years against the cancer.

We who knew her have lost a dear and faithful friend, bryology a skilled and conscientious scientist. The

work Jette Lewinsky-Haapasaari put her name to will keep that name alive.

Acknowledgment - The author wishes to thank Lars Heden?s, Riksmuseet, Stockholm, who read the manuscript with
