Voelker

Voelker Park is part of the San Antonio Greenways development project which aims to connect the various parks throughout the city by utilizing the greenbelts that flow along 100 year flood plains. Recalling its his-tory as a farm, once owned by the Voelker family, the park aims to become a bastian of wildflower preserva-tion and wildlife care.

The new visitor center will invite guests to explore the various trails that meander through the live oak forest to the central fields and meadows that hide from the suburban development surrounding the park. The form of the building slices into the hillside beside the ad-jacent creek, where programming is suspended from the conrete spine. Cantilevering from the spine, gallery space and reception areas hang over the creek edge,

blurring the line between park and shore. Restroom facilities and offices for the park rangers are housed along the spine structure. At ground level, educational facilities and a full kitchen is avaliable to rent and utilize for various occasions.

Community gardens are planned to be integrated into the grounds between the parking lot and the entrance, ensuring that today’s youth do not forget the impor-tance of the environment. Like a little Texas gem, the visitor center will ensure the growth of the park and the surrounding community.

URBAN THEATRE : art centre and school

Urban

Urban Theatre is situated at the intersection South King Street and Punahou. The building is a 12 storey magnet school for the arts. Built in two parts, the entry building along S. King St houses the public art galler-ies, offices, and recording facilities.Connected to the second tower by a bridge that forms a gateway and stage, the 12 storey tower houses student dorms and faculty/staff residences.

Each of the 640 sqft units set aside for offices and residences can be shifted in its structural housing to orient the view towards different perspectives of Ho-nolulu. Views of note would be the Waikiki Skyline, Hawaiian Sunsets, and Diamond Head.

The central courtyard placed between the buildings acts as a free expression place, where students are able to paint, act, or any other form of artistic expres-sion. The balconies of the units above look down into the courtyard allowing the entire complex to become engaged. The bridge connecting the towers also de-fines a space on the ground floor where performers can engage with the passing community on Punahou Street.

The project integrates the noises, sights, and sounds of the city to truely integrate the life of the urban atmo-sphere. Urban Theatre in turn, adds to the symphony of the city.

HillLudgateactivates the wall

New

Ludgate Hill currently refers to the neighborhood adjacent to the London Stock Exchange and St Paul’s Cathedral. Being a site where the ruins of the ancient Roman Wall still stands, throughout the colonial era a gate once stood in its place. Demolished in 1760, the historical importance of the site in the planning of London and the numer-ous rivers channeled underground throughout the victorian age has been lost to all but texts and adventurers.

In the hypothetical event that the block where the Old Ludgate was located had succummed to fire, the City of London is looking to replace the con-demned block with a park and pumping station to ensure future water reserves are avaliable when threatened by fire in the future. In the event, the Roman wall had become exposed and must be integrated into the site which provides access to the stock exchange from the Thames Link.

Reconstructing the former pieces of the wall, a sheet of water flows vertically creating a transpar-ent barrier. At times, penetrations allow visitors to pass through the wall untouched. This process creates the New Ludgate, where visitors are greeted on the other side by an iconic building that highlights London’s rich hydrologic history.

The building bursts forward as acrylic dowles adorn the forward facing facades. Within is a subterranean musuem housing a reconstructed victorian water-pump that services the outside water water system. Complete with exhibition room and main gallery hall, the building also houses a modern waterworks, where visitors have the opportunity to engage with modern utili-ty services and systems.

Surrounded by a reservoir, the double glazed facade utilizes evaporative cooling along the two glass fa-cades. At night these facades can be projected upon, displaying images of national pride and other events. The transparency also allows those who are pass-er-bys to observe the motion of the victorian pump as it supplies water to the grounds.

Due to the channelling of rivers underground through-out the victorian age, a common adventure sport of underground river diving is a popular, yet treacherous hobby. The reserviors at this site can be used for train-ing courses for these adventurers on future missions underground. The site is also conveniently located ad-jacent to the mouth of the River Fleet, a famous site for tunnel diving.

The Ancient CityShouXian寿

Preserve and ReinventRestore

Once the ancient capital of the Chu kingdom during the Warring States period, Shouxian is located west of Shanghai in Anhui province. Famous for its preser-vation of the ancient city wall, which served as a de-fensive feature as well as flood wall to protect the city during the flood season, the city has gone through a number of modern updates in the previous 40 years which have left physical scars throughout the com-munity. Having grown into a density unsustainable for a fortress town, city officials and developers plan to relocate 140,000 residents and reconstruct the neigh-borhoods to appeal to a tourist population.

Part of a team of students, the studio set out to ex-plore a less destructive option for the redevelopment of the city in the coming years.Three distinct typologies of

development were identified; Main Streets, Neighbor-hoods, and Perimeter Walls.

Main Street development looked to remove the inhos-pitable commercial development of the 1990’s and replace it with a new development scheme that aims to return the proper scales and feeling to the tradi-tional town. Of importance is the preservation of the traditional axis, development of safe waking streets, and integration of adjacent communities, ehancing the urge to explore and communicate.

Neighborhood development aims to return the materi-ality and organic feeling of growth and change to the sub-districts of the city. It is in these hidden materials that the true history of growth and the local residents

can be told.

Perimeter Wall development will attract tourism to-wards the perimeter of the city, easing city center congestion and allowing for the expansion of key local industries such as fresh produce and famous tofu. Al-ternative local craft industries will help develop the city as a self sustaining community.

Prototype

The development of the southern main street is important in that it is currently a popular destination for goods and services. An inves-tigation at what happens at the pedestiran scale begins to define how the changes in scales and layering of the circulation and traditional axis develops the main street to encourage community interaction and safe mobility.

The Artifact Pottery

Pottery plays an important role in the development of Chinese culture and identity, being able to trace its beginnings more than 8,000 years BCE. Many tech-niques are utilized in the restoration of shattered pot-tery. Old cracks create new lines as they are refused together. New infill adds to the overall body to help complete the original pot, its addition careful to not take attention from the true essence of the overall pot.Rather than replicating the past and fitting it to mod-ern models, Shouxian aims to patch the holes left by deteriorating meodern development and highlighting the past.

The central concept of Kunshan Quay derived from the opportunities of an elongated site and waterfront location. Cutting through the two buildings, the sculptural paths reach across the site and unfold into a third structure with a sloping roof garden. The arms draw users not only into the site but upwards to the second level. Users are encouraged to explore to the upper levels as the three main circulation routes connect to the second floor. Guests are further encouraged to visit the third level roof deck with the unique tree structure canopy and open air terraces. The upper levels also provide panoramic views that overlook the waterfront. The first level provides plentiful seating areas and a main central space that opens up to the river. With a curved sculptural form and innovative structure, Kunshan Quay offers a visually pleasing and exciting journey for a desirable shopping experience.

ELEVATION SKETCH

Located in a prosperous special economic zone near Shanghai, China, the city of Kunshan in Jiang-su provence has seen an explosion in population and economic wealth. To be developed along a riverwalk park adjacent to a newly constructed residential neighborhood, the project aims to interact with the various types of users by creating a hill for people to climb on.

Predominately composed of service and dinning facilities, the project activated the second storey by utilizing three different design features. The build-ing connects itself directly to the walking bridge that crosses the river, allowng pedestrians to freely flow through the second storey on their way along the boardwalk. A monolithic stiarcase greets new visitors from the street and invites them to continue climbing up towards the various roofdecks that overlook the waterfront. From the east, pedestrians are led up an earth berm that terminates in a cafe and multipur-pose performance space. The burm then connects to the second storey and on towards the pedestrian bridge.

Due to the various methods of bridging the program-ming of the three buildings, unique spaces are cre-ated throughout the site that extend the percievable space of the shops to the outdoors. Open areas are integrated into the design to allow for groups of playing children and nightly community gatherings of dancers and performers.

The central concept of Kunshan Quay derived from the opportunities of an elongated site and waterfront location.

Cutting through the two buildings, the sculptural paths reach across the site and unfold into a third structure with a

sloping roof garden. The arms draw users not only into the site but upwards to the second level. Users are encouraged

to explore to the upper levels as the three main circulation routes connect to the second floor. Guests are further

encouraged to visit the third level roof deck with the unique tree structure canopy and open air terraces. The upper

levels also provide panoramic views that overlook the waterfront. The first level provides plentiful seating areas and a

main central space that opens up to the river. With a curved sculptural form and innovative structure, Kunshan Quay

offers a visually pleasing and exciting journey for a desirable shopping experience.

A tensile fabric canopy partially covers the roof deck adjacent to the cafe on the burm and the roofdecks of the two three storey buildings connected to the pedestrian bridge. The canopy provides for rain pro-tection and a refuge from the sun during the warmer months.

Much like the trees that line the riverbank accom-paning visitors on their walk from the bridge, the canopy utilizes a tree-structure to create a more transparent support structure and tree-like column scheme to help invite visitors to the higher decks. Gardens are planted on the berm to provide private areas to sllow visitors more intimate interactions with friends and family.

Open to the river, the program retains an inviting gesture that draws people to the edge from the street.Layering plays an important role in fluidity of movement within the site, creating unique inter-sections of people and program throught the site. Maintaining continuity of the pedestrian bridge that crosses the river, an extension of the bridge contin-ues across the central courtyard, allowing for people wanting to cross directly to the riverwalk to become engaged in the activity below.

A primary focus for this project was the development of the ar-chitectural details and preparation for construction documents. An understanding of fundamental structural design and components necessary for enclosure was a key aspect of developing a detailed wall section and callouts for the Kunshan shopping centre. Further-more, an understanding of the local capabilities in construction and quality was key to developing a section that could be constructible according to local skill sets.

The development of the various public spaces rely heavily on the specific details needed to ensure their constructibility. Investigations had to be made in order to develop an appropriate tree structure and various material studies allowed for the development of the many floor level changes and roofdecks/gardens.

Hailar | China

ELEMENT | 海拉尔

Hulunbuir In the northernmost province of China, the city of Hai-lar is the centre of administrative power and economics in the northernmost reaches of Inner Mongolia. Long fridged winters are iconic of the area which shares a climate and geography similar to that of Ulan Bator and other areas in nearby Mongolia. As part of the sec-ond tier city development scheme throughout China, Hailar’s population is expected to grow substantially as a new economic centre is developed alongside an artificial lake built in the heart of the city.

The client is a private local developer and is interest-ed in develoing a residential, retail, and office complex which overlooks the nearby artificial lake. Requested to provide a second option for the client to choose from,

the following project resembles a competition within the office between the foreign architects and our Chi-nese counterparts. With four weeks to develop a new masterplan, massing, and proposal, presentation to the client and selection of winning proposal was the goal.

Story: Carved from the land, the hills surrounding HAi-lar have become important geographical boundaries that have protected its people and culture. A cross-roads of three great ancient empires, Hailar grew to be a place for people to gether and rest in warmth and celebration. This project has been given the gift to recollect these celebrations, and give forth to the community a new breath of warmth and celebration in the heart of Hailar.

Developed as a new hearth for the city of Hailar, pro-gramming and development of the final scheme relies heavily on three guiding principles.

Plaza: carved from the landReflecting the rolling hills and mountains of the sur-rounding steppe, the various gathering spaces in the complex are seemingly carved from the topography of the new masterplan, shielding users from the fridged northern winds during winter.

Form: Protected BoundariesThe geography protects Hailar, as the project protects those within. Much like the organization of a ger-village with a perimeter for safety and doors facing inward amongst each other, the projects provides protective

spaces around localized “hearths.”

Entry: Gathering of PeopleThe entry of each ger opens into the central gather-ing space of the temporary village. The projects greets each entry with a large plaza space for gathering and performing. These spaces work to direct and distribute pedestrian traffic throughout the site with careful at-tention to private and public programming.
