行政總裁的話 CEO’s message

In this issue, we are pleased to report on JEC’s involvement in several significant energy management projects in Thailand. At the new Government Office Center Complex and associated Energy Center, JEC has been responsible for installing and maintaining state-of-the-art energy management solutions, including a gas-fuelled co-generation power plant. At a separate project in Bangkok, the Energy Complex, JEC is also playing a leading role in helping to obtain LEED accreditation for this facility - through the installation of efficient systems ranging from electrical and water management to air-conditioning and lighting. With involvement in such projects and incorporation of innovative energy-efficient technology, JEC aims to build upon its strengths as a specialist E&M engineering contractor whilst upholding a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

February 2009 saw the grand opening of a new showroom in Hong Kong, which features a full range of Midea kitchen appliances and advanced energy-saving lighting products from around the world – in order to further supplement our range of building products suitable for commercial and residential projects. JEC is also pleased to be contributing to the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort in Singapore, through the supply and installation of the world’s largest operable partition wall, and we look forward to the opening of the first part of the resort at the end of this year.

Throughout JEC our commitment to community service remains strong, with each of our territories furthering their community-based initiatives over recent months. In terms of environmental health and safety, JEC is also pleased that in 2008 we achieved our lowest rate of personnel injury in recent years; despite such progress, continual improvement in this area remains our foremost priority.

今期，我們將報道怡和機器參與泰國能源管理計劃的最新消

息。在全新的「政府辦公中心綜合項目」及相關的「能源

中心」項目中，怡和機器負責安裝及落實先進的能源管理方

案，其中包括一個燃氣熱電聯產發電站。在曼谷，怡和機器

亦參與名為「能源綜合項目」的計劃，並擔當領導角色，

負責安裝有關電力及水務管理、空調及照明等範疇的高效益

系統，以協助該項目取得LEED認證。透過參與此等項目及

引入創新節能科技，怡和機器成功發揮優勢，確立其作為

專業機電合約工程承包商的地位，同時對環境可持續性作出

貢獻。

在2009年2月，一個全新陳列室在香港隆重開幕，專門展示

美的集團全套廚房電器以及各國的尖端節能照明產品；這個

陳列室將進一步強化我們的樓宇產品系列，為商住項目提供

更佳方案。怡和機器亦有幸參與新加坡的濱海灣金沙綜合娛

樂城，負責供應及安裝世界最大的活動間隔牆；娛樂城的第

一期將於本年底開幕，實在令人期盼。

此外，過去數月，怡和機器繼續回饋社會，在各業務地區推

行社區計劃。在環境健康與安全方面，公司於2008年錄得

數年來最低的人員受傷率，成績教人鼓舞。不過，我們決不

自滿，定當繼續提升有關表現。

合娛樂城可於2009年底局部啟用。該項目被這個

美國博彩集團喻為「亞洲的皇冠」，是新加坡兩大

賭場項目之一，擁有三幢酒店大樓共2650間豪華

Las Vegas Sands is confident that despite the current economic downturn, and an initial delay in construction work, the partial opening of Marina Bay Sands Resort Singapore will go ahead at the end of 2009. This project, touted as the “crown jewel of Asia” by the US gaming giant, is one of two major casino projects in Singapore, and boasts 2650 luxury rooms in three hotel towers, extensive meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) facilities, two theatres, an art and science museum and high-end shopping malls.

Having been awarded two major contracts already, and with potential for greater involvement in the near future, JEC Singapore is proud to be associated with this prestigious project.

JEC Singapore’s involvement currently comprises a major contract to design, supply and install, in collaboration with leading Dutch operable wall specialist Parthos, the world’s largest operable partition wall system, spanning 4 km. Representing the largest installation procedure of its kind in the world, this challenging logistical exercise brings to the forefront the core skills and value of JEC Singapore.

In addition, as part of a contract to provide ironmongeries in partnership with Ingersoll Rand as major hardware supplier, JEC Singapore will provide engineering, design and supply management solutions.

JEC Carnival Spring Dinner 2009怡和機器嘉年華暨2009週年晚宴JEC held its annual Spring Dinner on 10th March 2009 at the Grand Hall, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year’s theme was a festive carnival, with colourful decorations, games and special staff performances. JEC Chief Executive, Mr Alex Newbigging, took the opportunity to present several outstanding performance awards to JEC staff, including Long Service Awards for service of over 20 and 40 years, Caring Team Awards, and other external awards.

Trane Provides Carbon Reduction Solutions at Festival Walk特靈為又一城提供減碳方案

鑑於特靈客戶對特靈的冷水機組十分欣賞，因此特

靈維修部成功獲得合約，負責為太古地產位於香

港九龍塘的又一城商場，更換四套冷水機組；原先

使用已逾十年的裝置，將更換成特靈CenTraVac

HCFC-123 冷水機組，以發揮更佳的成本及能源

效益。

有關工程預計可降低冷水機房的耗電量超過 35%，

有助減少二氧化碳排放及改善能源效益。合約內

容還包括建立特靈Tracer DDC控制系統（連 2.5

年保養服務），藉此提供最佳的系統設計及安裝，

以及節省更多能源。

Based on the customer’s own positive experiences with Trane chillers, Trane Service has been awarded a contract to replace the four sets of chillers at Swire Properties’ Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, which are now over ten years old, with cost and energy-efficient Trane CenTraVac HCFC-123 chillers.

This contract will provide both reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions and greatly improved energy efficiency for the customer, by reducing estimated chiller plant electricity consumption by more than 35%. The contract also includes Trane’s Tracer DDC control system (with 2.5 years of maintenance) to provide an optimal system design and installation, and maximise energy savings.

The highly praised energy performance of the Trane CenTraVac HCFC-123 chiller offers proven efficiency, while the low global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerant HCFC-123 makes this product a popular choice worldwide.

Jardine Distribution, a leading distributor of applied construction chemical products, recently launched its newest products Soilguard and Optimum Flex during the Philippine World Building and Construction Exposition (WORLDBEX), held from 18th to 22nd March 2009 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

Soilguard, a high quality product from Protim, manufacturer of Solignum, is a soil termiticide that is used as a soil treatment to prevent termites from attacking homes. The distinguishing features of Soilguard are that it is both odourless and economical.

Optimum Flex is a highly flexible cementitious waterproofing product that is ideal for balconies, roof decks, etc. During the 5-day event, product demos were provided to more than 50,000 WORDLBEX visitors to introduce the product’s unique features.

The “Cluster Green Ceremony and Inauguration of Wind Turbine and PV Panels at Kowloon Hospital”, a project for which JEC was the main contractor, was held on 2nd December 2008. Following a short introductory video, Mr Raymond Lin, JEC’s Operations Director of Building Equipment & Products was invited to receive a souvenir.

JEC’s grid-connected hybrid solar and wind turbine system is located on the roof of the West Wing, Kowloon Hospital. It is the first hybrid solar and wind turbine system in public hospitals in Hong Kong. The system comprises of 108 solar photovoltaic panels and two vertical-axis wind turbines, with a total maximum electrical power output of 20 kW. The estimated annual energy output of the system is 29,000 kWh, resulting in a Carbon Dioxide emissions reduction of 22,620 kg.

Solar power and wind power are two of the world’s most plentiful energy sources. The main advantage of the grid-connected hybrid power system is that electricity is generated both at times of strong sun and wind. When there is neither sun nor wind, the grid-connected backup supplies electricity from CLP’s conventional power grid.

Another feature of the system is the vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), instead of a traditional horizontal-axis turbine (HAWT), with the benefit that VAWTs can capture all wind directions without directional adjustment, while turbulent winds do not cause any adverse effects to their performance. VAWTs are also rendered more stable and reliable by having only one moving part and no collecting ring.

performance• Low noise, no vibration, stable and

reliable operation• State-of-the-art airfoil design• High efficiency• No harm to wildlife (bird strikes)

Assessing site and environmental conditions during the design phase, photovoltaic panels have been arranged to fully utilise the space on the flat roof. Moreover, in view of ‘Feng Shui’ concerns regarding traditional HAWTs, VAWTs with modern and attractive appearances are preferred.

JEC is confident that this successful project will contribute greatly to the promotion of renewable energy applications throughout Hong Kong.

怡和機器的太陽能及風力混合發電系統將

與電網相連，並設於九龍醫院西翼天台，

是香港公立醫院首個太陽能及風力混合發

電系統。系統包含 108 個太陽能光伏電

池板及兩個垂直軸風力渦輪機，最大電力

輸出功率 20 kW，預計全年輸出能源量

為 29,000 kWh，可減少排放二氧化碳達

22,620 公斤。

太陽能及風力是地球上兩大電力來源，有

取之不竭的優點。與電網接駁的混合發電

系統，能在太陽猛烈及風力強勁時製造電

力；當缺乏陽光及強風時，與電網連接的

後備系統則從中華電力公司的傳統電網

取用電力，維持建築物的運作。

系統的另一特點，是採用垂直軸風力渦

輪機（VAWT），而非傳統的水平軸渦輪

機（HAWT）；前者的優點是能夠捕捉所

有風向而毋須調整方向，同時狂亂的陣

風也不致影響其表現。此外，VAWT 只

有一個轉動部位，並無集流環，因此較

為穩定可靠。

VAWT較HAWT優勝的其他地方：• 革命性全方位低起動扭矩發電機• 沒有齒槽效應• 極佳的低風速自我起動表現• 低噪音、無振動及穩定可靠的運作• 先進的螺旋槳設計• 高效益• 不損害野生動物（機鳥互撞）

在設計之初，公司先評估地點及環境因

素，然後精心研究太陽能光伏電池的擺放

位置，以充分利用天台空間。此外，傳統

HAWT會造成風水問題，但VAWT的外型

則時尚漂亮得多。

Project 1 - Government Office Centre Complex (GOCC)

• GOCC is designed as a sustainable building with advanced green engineering concepts.

High Efficiency Air-conditioning SystemJEC provides and installs a variety of equipment and facilities within the complex, such as: • High efficiency air-conditioning and

ventilation systems for the Zone B main office building.

• The Energy Center (Co-Generation Plant) which acts as a distributed power generation and combined heat plant, supplying electricity and chilled water for the adjacent GOCC.

Highlights: • Located on a 47.35 hectare piece

of land on Chaeng Wattana Road, Bangkok Thailand.

• Comprises two zones: - Zone A: A 9-storey main office

building of 150,000 sqm and a car park building.

- Zone B: A 9-storey main office building of 917,000 sqm, a 4-storey car park building, a 4-storey dormitory, a 2-storey canteen, a meeting hall, an energy centre, a utility building and two water ponds for cooling purposes.

• GOCC will hold over 28 government agencies, including the Office of Police Forensic Science, the Treasury Department, the National Health Security Office and others.

Project 2 - The Energy Center (Co-Generation Plant)


Increased Energy Efficiency with Lower CostsThe cooling demands of the GOCC are estimated to reach 8,900 RT during weekday work hours, and can be as low as 2,000 RT during off-peak hours. The building is designed with sustainability in mind. To address the high temporal difference in cooling demand, a thermal storage system is installed. The system will be charged by chilled water during the night and discharged during the day. This significantly reduces the maximum cooling capacity of the plant, thereby saving energy and recurrent costs.

During the day, gas turbines will use natural gas to generate electricity as the absorption chiller produces chilled water. At night, when electricity costs are cheaper, the electric chillers will produce chilled water.

This combined heat and power plant delivers a 35% increase in efficiency relative to a normal power plant. The Energy Center’s mechanical and electrical systems, including plant balance, are installed and maintained by JEC, whilst Italian-Thai Development Public Co. Ltd is responsible for the building structure and other main equipment supply.

JEC is responsible for all plant equipment; we provide installation for chilled water, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, sanitary and fire protection systems, lighting, plant watering and drainage networks, and electrical and communication systems.

Highlights: • Located adjacent to GOCC is the

Energy Center (Co-Generation Plant) which uses natural gas as a fuel for gas turbine generators to generate electricity.

• The plant comprises two gas turbine generators at 4.7 MW each, two 3,000 tonne refrigerant (RT) absorption chillers, two 2,000 RT electric chillers and two 1,000 RT electric chillers.

• Waste exhaust heat is used to run absorption chillers and produce 6,000 RT of chilled water at 6 degrees Celsius.

Project 3 - Energy Complex (ENCO)

Safety Code (National Fire Protection Association) to ensure fire safety of the buildings.

ENCO will also feature:• A “double skin” concept, with dual

façades incorporated at buildings A and B. These buildings will have shading devices installed within the one metre space between the inner and outer façade to control light and heat radiation, allowing excess cooled air from the air-to-air heat exchanger to be vented into the gap between the façades, thereby reducing inward heat transfer.

• Photovoltaic (solar) cells on the roofs of four buildings to generate electricity for internal use.

• An air-conditioning system designed according to ASHRAE 90.1, ‘Energy Efficient Design of New Buildings Except Low-rise Residential Buildings’. A variable-air-volume (VAV) system is used to ensure the temperature and condition of air throughout the building is precisely controlled to minimise energy waste.

• A sophisticated Building Management System (BMS) to ensure all engineering systems are integrated and operated optimally, thereby enhancing energy efficiency. The integrated BMS includes a Building Automation System, Fire Alarm System, Energy Management System and Security System.

• A wastewater treatment plant to

collect and treat wastewater from all buildings, to be reused in the water flushing system.

JEC’s CapabilitiesJEC is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all plant equipment, supply and installation of building service systems for Building A, and the main chiller plant for Building F, which includes the air-conditioning and ventilation system, electrical and communications system, sanitary and fire protection system, lighting, plant watering, drainage and water features for landscaping, and the electric chiller system.

in Bangkok, the complex will house Thailand’s energy-related state agencies and private companies including the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) and others.

• ENCO is billed as the first truly energy-efficient building in Thailand.

• ENCO is designed as a sustainable building under the LEED Green Building Rating System. LEED is a third-party certification programme and internationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

• Comprises five buildings and one plant:- Building A : office building

(36-storeys, 118,000 sqm)- Building B : office building

(25-storeys, 61,500 sqm)- Building C : office building (8-storeys,

19,800 sqm) - Building D and E: car park buildings - Building F: electric chiller plant

Sustainable Project Design ConceptIn line with LEED green building certification, the project’s design concept comprises sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmospheric features, materials and resources, indoor environment quality and design processes. ENCO will also use the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and

怡和機器機電工程之能源改善系統當今世界日益關注環保及能源使用，因此項目設計師與

樓宇業主也渴望應用創新技術，藉此改善能源效益及

減少環境損害。怡和機器正與客戶及技術夥伴合作，

落實多個先進方案，以實現上述目標。本文將重點介

紹泰國怡和機器近期落實的項目，並講解其優點。

高效能空調系統怡和機器為項目提供及安裝各類型產品，

例如： • 為區域B主辦公大樓安裝所有高效能空

調及通風系統。• 為「能源中心」（熱電聯產發電站）提

供及安裝產品，該中心將作為分散式

發電站及熱電聯產機房，為毗鄰的

GOCC供應電力及冷水。

項目一 – 政府辦公中心綜合項目(GOCC)

重要資料： • 位於泰國曼谷Chaeng Wattana Road

一處面積達 47.35 公頃的土地。 • 包括兩個區域：

- 區域A：將建造一幢九層高的主辦公

大樓（總面積 150,000 平方米）及一

幢停車場大樓。

- 區域B：將建造一幢九層高的主辦公

大樓（總面積 917,000 平方米）、一

幢四層高的停車場大樓、一幢四層

高的宿舍、一幢兩層高的食堂、一

個會議大堂、一個能源中心、一幢

多用途大樓，以及兩個發揮涼快作

用的水池。 • 項目竣工之後，將成為逾 28 個政府機

構的辦事處，其中包括警察鑑證科學

辦事處、財政部以及國家健康安全辦

事處等。 • 項目的設計採用先進綠色工程概念，

符合可持續原則。

項目二 – 能源中心(熱電聯產發電站)

重要資料： • 毗鄰GOCC的能源中心（熱電聯產發電

站）採用天然氣作燃料，藉此推動渦輪

機製造電力。 • 發電站包括兩個氣體渦輪發電站（每個

為 4.7 MW）、兩個 3,000 公噸冷媒（RT）

吸收式冷凍機、兩個 2,000 RT電力冷凍

機，以及兩個 1,000 RT電力冷凍機。 • 釋出的廢熱將用作推動吸收式冷凍機，

可以攝氏六度製造 6,000 RT冷水。

較低成本節省能源在工作日辦公時間，GOCC的冷凍需求預

計為 8,900 RT；在非繁忙時段，則低至

2,000 RT。鑑於冷凍需求在不同時段有莫

大差異，因此大樓設計強調可持續性，例

如冷凍機組會於晚間把熱力儲存起來，待

至日間釋放出來。這將大大降低機組的最

大冷凍產能，有效節省能源及降低經常性

開支。在日間，氣體渦輪機將使用天然氣

製造電力，同時吸收式冷凍機組將製造冷

水；及至晚上，當電力成本較為低廉時，

電力冷凍機將可製造冷水。

這個高效能熱電聯產發電站，其效益較一

般發電站高出 35%。能源中心（熱電聯產

發電站）項目的機電裝置，包括電廠輔機，

均由怡和機器安裝及保養；Italian-Thai

Development Public Co. Ltd則負責建築物

結構及其他主要設備的供應。

怡和機器的任務包括供應及安裝以下機房

設備：電力及冷水、空調及通風系統、衛

生及防火系統、照明、機房用水及排水網

絡，以及電力與通訊系統。

項目三 – 能源綜合項目(ENCO)

重要資料： • 項目位於曼谷Vibhavadi Rangsit

Road，將是泰國的能源相關部門及私

營公司的辦事處，例如國家能源部、泰

國石油局等。 • 被喻為泰國首個真正的節能建築物。 • 項目依照LEED綠色建築評級系統設

計，屬可持續的建築物。該評級系統為

第三方認證計劃，是設計、建造及營運

高效能綠色建築方面的國際公認標準。 • 項目包括五幢大樓及一個機房：

- 大樓A：辦公大樓（36 層，118,000

平方米）

- 大樓B：辦公大樓（25 層，61,500

平方米）

- 大樓C：辦公大樓（8 層，19,800 平

方米）

- 大樓D及E：停車場大樓

- 大樓F：電力冷凍機房

ENCO的可持續性設計概念為符合國際認可的LEED綠色建築認證的

規定，項目設計注重可持續的用地、用水

效益、能源及氣溫情況、物料及資源、室

內環境質素及設計程序。這個能源綜合項

目並採用NFPA 5000 建築施工和安全規

範（美國國家防火協會），確保建築物備

有良好的防火措施。

此外，這個能源綜合項目還包括以下特

點：• 「雙表皮」概念，即在大樓 A 及 B 建造

雙層外牆。在內牆與外牆的一米空間

之中，將設有遮陽裝置，以控制日光

及熱力散射，使「空氣對空氣熱交換

器」釋出的多餘冷氣，流入牆壁之間

的空隙，減少由外至內的熱力傳輸。

• 四幢大樓的天台均鋪設光伏（太陽能）

電池，以製造電力供內部使用。 • 空調系統按照 ASHRAE 90.1 標準設

計，屬「新建築物節能設計（低層住宅

大廈除外）」。系統採用「可變風量」，

確保整個大廈的溫度及空氣質素能夠

準確控制，並把能源浪費減至最低。• 備有精密的樓宇管理系統（BMS），確

保所有工程系統互相連繫及運作妥善，

藉此增強能源效益。綜合式BMS包括

屋宇自動化系統、消防警報系統、能

源管理系統及保安系統。• 備有廢水處理站，以收集及處理各大

樓排出的廢水，然後循環應用於沖水

系統。

怡和機器參與部份怡和機器負責大樓A所有機房設備的安裝

及保養、各樓宇服務系統的供應及安裝；

同時也負責大樓F的主冷凍機房，其中包

括空調及通風系統、電力及通訊系統、衛

生及消防系統、照明、機房用水、排水、

園景用水，以及電力冷凍系統。

JEC’s personnel injury incident rate, measurable for incapacitations greater than three days, was 2.08/1,000 in 2008. This is the lowest figure in recent years, marking another year of significantly improved health and safety performance.

Despite this success, however, JEC’s 2008 performance appraisal and 2009 goal-setting focused on the following questions:• Are we really satisfied with our

previous year’s performance? • In which areas can JEC achieve

further sustainable improvements?

JEC’s commitment to ongoing improvement in health and safety performance is driven by a philosophy that there is never room for complacency. After objective review of the root causes of past incidents and audit report findings, the following key areas have been targeted for improvement:

Operating ForesightForesight refers to the ability to forecast a sequence of events and potential outcomes. Most, if not all, dangerous incidents could be prevented if better foresight was employed to identify and communicate potential future hazards, and this requires project managers to adopt the right ‘safety first’ attitude. In other words, when assessing a particular task, effective health and safety management requires that the project manager estimate the associated hazards in the same manner as planning timing, cost and labour resources. When hazards are identified, preemptive measures can be taken before work begins.

Management PriorityWith a strong commitment to ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public in the vicinity of JEC sites, occupational health and safety is JEC’s foremost management priority. In order to fully protect staff, subcontractor workers, customers and the general public, JEC expects its managers to apply the same safety standards at the workplace as applied to their own families and homes.

Our project managers obviously wish to demonstrate effective time management and seek to avoid wasting time. However, there is never any excuse for viewing health and safety as a luxury. Using a top-down approach, JEC aims to cultivate a management culture

Subcontractor ManagementSubcontractors are a key element of JEC’s resources on site. Thus it is vital that JEC project managers are fluent in how to best manage the activities and all safety aspects of subcontractors.

Furthermore, when an incident occurs, project managers must accept full responsibility on behalf of JEC, and understand that blaming subcontractors is unacceptable. As JEC’s subcontracted resources form an integral part of the overall JEC operating system, the level of professionalism expected of JEC project managers demands acceptance of full accountability with respect to subcontractor performance.

The key to success in these three areas lies in staff at all working levels possessing the right attitude to health and safety. By supporting cultivation of the correct attitude through a clear policy, standing system and management commitment, JEC is confident in its ability to sustain and improve upon a high level of health and safety performance.

營運上的遠見遠見指有能力預計連串事件的發展以及

況下，如能好好思考推測，識別潛在危

險並作出警告，則可避免嚴重意外發生；

要具備這樣的能力，項目經理必須培養

「安全第一」的態度。換句話說，在評估

一個特定工作時，項目經理必須遵從有

效的健康及安全管理方法，評估各種相

關風險，嚴謹程度與計算時間、成本及

人力資源不遑多讓。一旦發現潛在危險，

便必須在開始工作之前，採取預防措施。

次承包商的管理次承包商在怡和機器的工地上扮演著重要

角色。因此，怡和機器項目經理必須妥善

管理次承包商的活動及各項安全細節。

此外，如發生事故，項目經理必須代表怡

和機器承擔全部責任，不可把責任推卸給

次承包商。由於次承包商的服務是怡和機

器營運系統的重要部分，項目經理必須發

揮高度專業精神，就次承包商的工作表現

承擔所有責任。

公司於上述三個範疇能否取得成功，有賴

各階層員工是否具備正確的健康與安全觀

念。為協助員工培養正確的態度，怡和機

器已定下清晰的政策、等級系統及管理承

諾，相信健康與安全表現將可精益求精，

不斷進步。

Energy Costs and Maintenance SavingsThe light output of the RXD is equivalent to a traditional 2 x 26 W compact fluorescent light, and offers a lifelong energy saving of 24,000 kWh, an overall energy reduction of 35%.

Aside from providing day-to-day energy cost savings, the LEDs’ assured lifetime also makes them perfect for applications where maintenance and lamp replacement is difficult or disruptive, dangerous, or perhaps presents a security risk.

Based on 10 hours use per day, RXD will perform maintenance free for 13.7 years, compared to only 2.7 years for standard compact fluorescent lamps, whose lifespan is compromised further by the effects of regular switching.

Specifying with Confidence in a Confusing MarketplaceAs with any rapidly evolving technology, specifiers, installers and end users may be wary that some LED products may not deliver all the benefits promised. It is important to recognise that light fittings use two types of LED: either the 5 mm LEDs previously used in commercial fittings, or high-output (HO) chip-on-board LEDs which have become the

Available in warm white or cool white, each with a remarkably high colour rendering index, these products deliver high quality lighting performance, combined with all the advantages of low energy consumption and a maintenance free life. Furthermore, of particular interest to retail and museum applications, the ultraviolet (UV) output of these products is virtually zero.

Thermal Management of LEDs 5 mm LEDs, now largely limited to the domestic market, provide only half their original light output after 6000 hours, whereas HO LEDs continue to produce close to their entire original output after this time, and can offer viable output for over 10 years of commercial use.

However, lengthy operational life is dependent on correct light fitting design, effective thermal management and accurate current flow. Since LEDs generate heat from the rear rather than the front, fittings must be specifically designed to accommodate LED components, to maximise operational benefits. LED replacements are thus not appropriate for every kind of light fitting.

LED products themselves must also have prominent thermal management elements. Cooper’s RXD and DXS use heat pipes, a proven technology commonly found in modern laptops, in place of traditional heat sink methods, to achieve a compact and lightweight design.

AXENT旗下的產品，RXD及DXS現提供

和機器正是Cooper Lighting在香港及澳

RXD及DXL糅合先進的高輸出率LED技

術。有關產品備有暖白色或冷白色選擇，

開關而受到損害。

制定規格　用家可安心使用與其他不斷演變的技術一樣，規格制定

者、安裝者及終端用戶也許都注意到，

部分LED產品未能發揮聲稱的優點。值

得留意的是，照明裝置實際上使用兩類

LED：即從前應用於商業裝置的 5 毫米

LED，以及漸受歡迎的高輸出率(HO)

板上芯片型LED。HO LED還有一項優

點，是可跟不同光學元件輕易整合，而

Cooper的RXD及DXS便充分利用這個

特點。

LED的溫度管理現時多半應用於本地市場的 5 毫米LED，

其光度於運作 6000 小時後只能達原先光

度的一半。相反，HO LED在運作同樣時

間後，其光度仍能接近最初的水平，因此

即使作商業用途逾十年，仍能提供理想的

光度輸出率。

然而，如想達致持久的運作壽命，必須擁

有正確的照明裝置設計、有效的溫度管理

及準確的電流量。由於LED從後面產生

熱力而非前面，因此裝置必須經特別設計

以配合LED部件，方能發揮最佳的運作

效益。也因為這個緣故，不是每種照明裝

置都適合進行LED更換工程。

LED 產品本身亦必須備有良好的溫度管

理元件。Cooper 的 RXD 及 DXS 採用了

熱管這種現代手提電腦常用的高效技術，

捨棄了傳統的散熱片，因此產品更小巧

輕盈。

JEC is committed to showing dedication to professional development by providing internal and external resources for young staff, who may have joined either as engineers, or through the management trainee programme.

Successful professional development requires a mutual commitment between JEC and its staff. Benefiting from the opportunities offered by JEC, young engineers and management trainees are able to give their best, seizing opportunities to learn, and emerging both as successful professional engineers and complete individuals who are able to contribute to wider society.

Trainee Experiences at JECCynthia Lam

My experience with JEC’s Electrical and Mechanical Contracting (E&MC) Business Unit, where I was responsible for modifying a stage at the

Hong Kong Space Museum, was interesting and inspiring. Since there were many wooden columns supporting the stage, the design relied heavily on site measurement, and I needed to get my hands dirty to complete the task, by climbing under the stage to obtain precise dimensions.

The highlights were seeing my own design approved and chopped, and frequently being called ‘Si Fu’ (experienced worker) by staff at the museum! Overall, this experience gave

me a remarkable feeling of success and achievement.

Gareth KwokI am most grateful to JEC for their carefully designed training programme, which provided me with the opportunity to train at an affiliate company,

consolidating my engineering design knowledge and allowing me to build my own network. In providing wide job exposure and managerial coaching, I believe JEC has greatly assisted my development as a professional engineer.

Kenneth WuOver three years as an Engineering Trainee, I have been involved in projects such as lift installations in MTR stations, installing the lifting platform

and wind-wave tunnel turntable at the University of Science and Technology, and installation of a new hangar at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Through the challenge of working on all stages of the project, from tendering to commissioning, I have developed communication skills and a sound technical knowledge of engineering and logistical planning, while also learning how to effectively co-ordinate with different subcontractors.

Kevin KwongLast year, I was nominated to join the Jardine Ambassador Programme after graduating from the management trainee scheme. On this programme, I

worked alongside people with different backgrounds to learn and spread the message of care for mental health. The programme provides an invaluable opportunity to enrich our social capital through coordinating with schools, non-government organisations and the business sector. Besides engineering input, this alternative experience allowed me to contribute to society, bringing a sense of fulfilment. I would encourage my peers and colleagues to get a taste of it.

Pace NgJEC’s training programmes provide a wide range of training in different companies and industries, broadening our horizons and developing us into

well-rounded management trainees. I have explored three different building divisions in the last eight months, and learnt how to sell and promote products from doors and hardware to sanitaryware and building supplies. I have also assisted in the organisation of exhibitions and seminars to follow market trends and hear potential customers’ opinions,

Along with my colleagues, I recently visited the Midea factory at Shun De in Guangdong Province, PRC, learning how the facility is managed systematically. As part of the overseas rotation, I am excited that JEC has recognised my ability, and given me the chance to continue my training in one of our overseas offices.

都要作出承擔。怡和機器不斷提供各種

機會，讓年青工程師及管理見習生盡展

所長、多多學習，藉此栽培他們成為傑

出的專業工程師及能幹的人才，為社會

作出貢獻。

怡和機器見習生的經驗分享林萱如我曾於怡和機器的機電合約工程部實習，

當時職責是為香港太空館改裝一個舞台，

過程有趣且獲益良多。由於該舞台是依

靠多條木柱作支撐，因此設計上十分講

究工地的尺寸量度；為了完成任務，我

曾爬進舞台底部量度尺寸，弄污雙手也

在所不計。

最高興的是，我的設計得到批准，可付諸實

行，而太空館職員也常稱呼我為「師傅」！

總括而言，那次經歷給我莫大成功感。

郭肇聰我很感謝怡和機器提供完善的培訓計劃，

使我有機會在一家聯屬公司受訓，使我

的工程設計知識大有進益，又讓我建立

人脈網絡。怡和機器讓我接觸到不同類

型的工作，又安排管理人員給我指導，

對我發展成為專業工程師甚有幫助。

個項目，包括為港鐵車站安裝升降機；為

科技大學安裝升降機平台及風浪槽轉盤；

以及為廣州白雲國際機場安裝新飛機庫。

由投標以至委派工作，項目的各個階段都

給我帶來挑戰，提升了我的溝通技巧、工

程知識及後勤策劃能力，而且還讓我學

會有效地協調各次承包商的工作。

鄺祈穎去年，我剛從管理見習生計劃畢業，迅

即獲提名參加「怡和大使計劃」。這計劃

讓我跟不同背景的人一起工作，學懂關

心精神健康，並把有關訊息傳揚開去。

我並有機會跟學校、慈善機構及商界聯

繫，豐富了我的社會經驗。除了貢獻我

的工程知識外，我還可透過計劃回饋社

會，感覺有意義又滿足。我必定鼓勵同

事參加這個計劃。

伍佩珊怡和機器的培訓計劃，讓員工可在不同

公司及行業接受訓練，增廣見聞，有助

成為全面的管理見習生。過去八個月，

我曾於三個不同建築產品部門任職，學

會如何推銷大門、硬件、潔具及建築用

品等產品。我還協助籌辦展覽會及講座，

成功緊貼市場趨勢及聽取潛在顧客的意

見，有助日後提供更優質的服務與產品。

此外，我還與同事參觀位於廣東省順德

縣的美的集團廠房，認識到如何有系統

地管理工廠設施。此外，我也有機會調

職至海外地方，接受訓練，並參與當地

的主要項目。能獲得公司的賞識及栽培，

誠然十分高興。

JEC Caring Team Organises Day Camp with Mental Health Association of Hong Kong

On 7th December 2008, JEC Caring Team, in collaboration with the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, organised the “Walk Along With You (II): Partner Connection-Helping Confront Mental Obstacles” Day Camp activity. 16 volunteer workers led 32 ex-mentally ill persons to Our Hands Farm. With the help of the Farm manager, Ka Po, the volunteers and ex-mentally ill persons worked together in the fields, and made a tasty meal of bread and dumplings for lunch. The ex-mentally ill persons initially required a little encouragement from the volunteers to get fully involved in the activities, but eventually initiated a sing-song with the volunteers to mark a positive end to a successful ‘giving’ day.

試。在最後環節，康復者更邀請義工們一

同唱歌，令在場氣氛相當融洽。希望此計

劃於未來能延綿不斷。

JEC Hong Kong Caring Team Visits the Elderly with St James’ Settlement香港怡和機器義工隊　探訪聖雅各福群會長者

On 30th November 2008, JEC Caring Team, in collaboration with St James’ Settlement, organised a visit to 52 elderly households in Lamma Island, Hong Kong. Despite the cold weather, voluntary workers were out in force to bring scarves hand-knitted by their JEC colleagues. Some of the elderly recognised volunteers from a previous visit in July, and were delighted to see JEC’s familiar faces.

手編織的圍巾送給長者。部分長者還認出若干義工曾於七月來訪，倍感欣慰。

JEC Philippines’ Gift Donations to White Cross Orphanage菲律賓怡和機器向White Cross孤兒院

捐贈禮物

On 11th December 2008, a team headed by Guenter Taus of JEC Philippines visited the White Cross Orphanage in San Juan Metro, Manila.

JEC Philippines used funds collected from penalties under the office’s “mobile phone-silent mode policy” to purchase milk, toys and other gifts, distributed to over 200 children at the orphanage. JEC Philippines also invited clients to participate in the event, and successfully raised 36,000 pesos.

During the visit, the children showed visible appreciation and excitement over their gifts, and will certainly look forward to further support from JEC Philippines in the future.

Mr Peter Long and Mr Eddie Ho from JEC attended Cummins’ Dealers Conference in Beijing, China, from 8th to 9th January 2009. During the presentation dinner, JEC was presented with the Cummins East Asia Excellent Sales Award in recognition of JEC’s outstanding performance in the generator set business for 2008.

Outstanding Apprentice Award傑出學徒獎

We are proud to announce that Mr Lee Pat Hon of M&R won the Outstanding Apprentice Award 2008, organised by the Vocational Training Council (VTC). Each year, employers in a variety of trades are invited to nominate their apprentices to participate in this competition, with a single winner selected from each trade area. To win this award, Mr Lee Pat Hon successfully completed two rounds of awards interviews, first by the inspectors of apprentices and then by the Committee on Apprenticeship and Trade Testing.

VTC has arranged for all awardees to join a trip to Singapore in early March, and the Presentation Ceremony was held on 18th March 2009.

三月初前往新加坡考察，而比賽的頒獎典禮亦於 2009 年 3

Harriti Lee: JEC Caring Team began as a social service programme, which used our Maintenance & Renovation colleagues’ technical expertise to fix electrical equipment, wiring and air-conditioning systems. As it evolved, we increasingly collaborated with different Non-government organisations (NGO) to service the young, the elderly and the ex-mentally ill. Our activities allow our colleagues to understand the needs of different groups in society, and provide a valuable and rewarding experience for their own personal development.

What motivated you to join the Caring Team?Harriti Lee: I wanted to use my personal time to contribute to a good cause, as I have always been interested in caring for others.

Dorothy Lam: At first, my motivation was to learn more about successful event organisation, and joining the Caring Team provided an opportunity for that. I have gained tremendously in terms of personal development since joining the team. At the beginning, I was shy and reserved in meetings, and uncertain how to express my ideas, but these days, I am confident to raise my opinions. Moreover, I know the important steps required for coordinating a successful and enjoyable event on behalf of colleagues and those using the service.

Kwok Pak Chiu: I enjoy being active and I am passionate about helping others.

Betty Yu: I was active in volunteering outside work, so when I heard that JEC was starting its own Caring Team, I was keen to get involved. It was my first time joining an organising committee and it was a steep learning curve. However, being a committee member helped me develop a wide range of important skills, from public speaking to written communication and liaison with external parties, such as social workers and NGOs. Through working out how to resolve various challenges, all these skills continue to improve with each activity we organise.

Which Caring Team activity was the most memorable experience?Dorothy Lam, Betty Yu and Kwok Pak Chiu: The day out with children from the HK Children & Youth Services in Central was an incredible challenge in terms of preparation. We walked through the routes several times to ensure that all safety and logistical issues were covered. In the end, it was worth the hard work, because we saw how much the children enjoyed working as a team to navigate their way around Central. For many of them, it was their first time riding the Star Ferry, eating wonton noodles or visiting sightseeing spots in the area.

Harriti Lee: Another event that stood out was a trip to the Hong Kong Wetland Park, again with the HK Children & Youth Services. It was an interesting day for the JEC volunteers, and the children were very active. Also, a rare opportunity to visit the Police College in Wong Chuk Hang ended up being just as fun and interesting for our JEC volunteers as it was for our guests!

李艷芬：怡和機器義工隊最初原是一個服

務社會的計劃，打算利用我們保養及維修

的專業技術，為有需要人士修理電器、電

線及空調。後來義工隊不斷演變，並跟各

個非政府組織合作，為年青人、長者及精

神病康復者提供服務。透過各種活動，同

事們得以認識及服務社會各階層，對個人

發展有莫大幫助。

是什麼驅使你參加義工隊？李艷芬：我想把私人時間投放在有意義的

事情上，而且我一向喜歡幫助別人。

林淑汶：最初，我希望學習籌辦活動的技巧，

而參加義工隊是一個很好的機會。自此，我

在個人發展上獲益良多。回想初時，我在會

議上時常表現害羞，不敢直抒己見，但現在

我已培養出自信，敢於發表意見。此外，我

還學會籌辦活動的重要步驟，知道如何為服

務對象及同事帶來稱心滿意的節目。

郭伯釗：我個性一向好動，且樂於助人。

楊麗雅：從前，我也在公餘時間參與義工服

務，因此當知道怡和機器打算組織義工隊，

我便渴望參加。當時我參加了籌辦委員會，

是首次加入這類組織，需要學習的東西很

多。作為委員會成員，我掌握了演說及文字

溝通等實用技巧，又學會了跟社工與非政府

組織等外部團體聯絡。經過多次舉辦活動

及克服各種挑戰，這些技能也有莫大進步。

有哪些義工活動令你們最為難忘？林淑汶、楊麗雅及郭伯釗：該是那次帶領香

港青少年服務處的兒童暢遊中環吧。那次

活動中，義工隊花了大量時間籌備，面對莫

大挑戰。我們事先行走那條路線好幾次，確

保路線安全及後勤安排妥當。結果，一切努

力沒有白費，小朋友都愉快地探索中環，又

表現出團隊精神；部分兒童更是首次乘搭

天星小輪、品嚐雲吞麵或參觀有關景點。

李艷芬：我對兩個活動感受最深。其一是

與香港青少年服務處合辦的香港濕地公園

參觀活動，還記得那些小朋友相當活潑，

怡和機器的同事也玩得十分開心；另一項

活動則是參觀黃竹坑警察學院，不但機會

難逢，而且小朋友和義工們都玩得很痛快。
