Nie jestem przesądny, ale to już trzynaście (!) lat kieruję Pra-cownią Druku Wklęsłego. To niewiele, mając na uwadze cho-ciażby kilkudziesięcioletnią historię Pracowni i katowickiej grafiki w ogóle. Swój szczególny wizerunek i pozycję Pracow-nia zawdzięczała moim znakomitym poprzednikom i profe-sorom. Zachowując szacunek dla tradycji, od jakiegoś czasu przestałem oglądać się za siebie. Liczy się dla mnie dzisiej-sza kondycja i dorobek Pracowni, który wspólnie – studenci i pedagodzy – tworzymy. Pozycja Pracowni jest konsekwen-cją dynamicznego rozwoju Katedry Grafiki Warsztatowej, która z chwilą usamodzielnienia Uczelni, zyskała zupełnie nową przestrzeń i możliwości, determinujące zakres i jakość kształcenia. W tym okresie trafiali do Pracowni studenci, których talent, aktywność i oryginalna osobowość potwier-dzały się z czasem w dojrzałych realizacjach dyplomowych. Entuzjazm, wzajemne zaufanie sprzyjały zawsze klimatowi swobodnej pracy artystycznej, stając się nadzieją artystycz-

nego spełnienia. Wielu studentów i absolwentów Pracowni Druku Wklęsłego osiągnęło sukcesy. Lista i skala ich gra-ficznych dokonań jest imponująca. Przysłowiowy „deszcz” nagród i wyróżnień, związany z ich udziałem w krajowych i  międzynarodowych przeglądach grafiki dowiódł, że gra-fika śląska nie porzucając tradycji, coraz skuteczniej podej-muje dialog z tym, co aktualne w grafice światowej. Organi-zowane w 2010 roku przez Instytuty Polskie w Düsseldorfie i Mińsku prezentacje grafiki studentów i dyplomantów Pra-cowni z udziałem moich prac, potwierdziły niejako swoim poziomem artystycznym „markę” katowickiej szkoły grafiki. Sukcesy Pracowni mają niekwestionowany udział w kształ-towaniu wizerunku Uczelni, współdecydując o jej pozycji w kraju i poza granicami.

I am not superstitious but it has been now thirteen years since I am in charge of the Intaglio Printing Studio. Taking into consideration the history of the Studio which counts for several decades, or the history of graphics of Katowice in general - it is not much. It owed its unique image and strong position to my great predecessors and professors. Having re-spect for its tradition, some time ago I stopped looking into the past. What is now important is the current condition and artistic output of the Studio which we – students and lecturers – create together. The Studio’s position is a con-sequence of the Chair of Graphic Art’s rapid development. Since the Chair of Graphic Art became independent it gained completely new sphere and possibilities determining the scope and quality of teaching. During that time many stu-dents got to the Studio and their talent, drives activity and extraordinary characters were confirmed lately in their ma-ture diploma works. Enthusiasm and mutual trust were al-

ways conducive to the atmosphere of unrestrained creative work, becoming a hope for an artistic fulfilment. Many stu-dents and graduates of the Intaglio Printing Studio achieved successes. The list and scale of their graphic achievements is really impressive. The proverbial “torrent” of awards and distinctions, connected with their participation in national and international reviews of graphic arts, proved that Up-per Silesia graphic art is more and more effective in under-taking the dialog with current trends in world’s graphic art, without abandoning the tradition. The exhibitions of the Studio’s students and graduates’ graphic works, with my own works included, were organised by the Polish Institutes in Düsseldorf and Minsk in 2010, and their high level some-how confirmed the artistic "brand of our Academy. The Stu-dio’s achievements have their unquestionable share in creat-ing the image of the Academy and therefore influence its position in Poland and abroad.

MICHAŁ MINOR

W skład legendarnej pracowni prof. Jana Szmatlocha w bu-dynku przy ul. Raciborskiej wchodziły:1. kwaszarnia, w której się czasem kopciło (nie mam tu na myśli palenia tytoniu),2. kanciapa z wielką szafą, za którą stała wygodna kana-pa i zza której to szafy słychać czasem było radosny śmiech profesora.3. pomieszczenie z prasami, w którym unosił się ponoć led-wie wyczuwalny duch Leona Wyczółkowskiego.Ten triumwirat lokalowy wytyczał w życiu Pracowni rytual-ny szlak, z którego od czasu do czasu zbaczałem, aby oddać się rozkoszy obcowania z bluesem w wykonaniu prof. Johna Mayalla i jego niezastąpionych asystentów w osobach Micka Taylora i Chrisa Barbera...

MAŁGOSIA SZANDAŁA

Szybkie kroki, białe włosy, parę gestów rysujących w powie-trzu wyobrażone formy a potem odgłosy dyskusji dobiegają-ce zza „szafy”. Tak rano pojawiał się Profesor.W pracowni metalu będąc już na roku dyplomowym miały-śmy przywilej przesiadywania w tym samym pomieszcze-niu, gdzie Profesor i wpadający do niego goście. Pracowały-śmy (akurat trzy dziewczyny) mozoląc się z  suchą igłą, od-pryskującym odpryskiem, wyciskając ostatnie poty w mięk-kim werniksie. Jednocześnie jakby na pół obecne, bo oddzie-lone „szafą” przysłuchiwałyśmy się rozmowom profesorów, w których brałyśmy jakiś prowizoryczny, ale za to inspiru-jący „półudział”. Siedzimy tak po obu stronach ale wszyscy razem, narysowani konturem w kilku plamach tinty, zasłonięci mgłą z kalafonii.

ANNA KRZTOŃ

Do pracowni wklęsłodruku trafiłam już na drugim roku mo-ich studiów. Tam też, pod czujnym okiem Profesora Jana Szmatlocha, zrealizowałam swój dyplom licencjacki. Nie tyl-ko sama technika, ale także atmosfera pracy panująca w pra-cowni, przyciągnęła mnie do niej i nadal przyciąga. Dobrze pracuje się w towarzystwie ludzi kreatywnych, mobilizują-cych i inspirujących się nawzajem. Śmiało chyba mogę po-wiedzieć, że miejsce to stało się moim drugim – o  ile nie pierwszym – domem.

DOROTA NOWAK

Szkoła była wtedy bardzo kameralna, wszyscy się znaliśmy. Szczególnie mocno zadomowiłam się w pracowni wklęsłodru-ku i tam postanowiłam zrealizować swój dyplom magisterski. Czas tuż przed dyplomem dla mnie i moich kolegów był chyba najbardziej intensywny, ale też ekscytujący. Mnóstwo pracy koncepcyjnej i wiele fizycznego wysiłku przy realizacji grafik. Prof. Szmatloch „doglądał” swoich dyplomantów szczególnie uważnie i żaden drobiazg, błąd techniczny nie zdołał uciec jego uwadze. Korekty były niezwykle wnikliwe i pomagały w doskonaleniu graficznego obrazu. Mistrz Szmatloch był wy-magający, kiedy jednak już coś pochwalił znaczyło to bardzo wiele.W swoim dyplomie łączyłam mezzotintę i suchoryt z gra-fiką cyfrową, wówczas to była nowość. Bardzo sobie ceni-łam fakt, że zostawiono mi wolność przy wyborze techni-ki i umożliwiono łączenie klasycznego wklęsłodrukowego warsztatu z nowym digitalnym medium. Zdecydowanie był to ważny czas dla mojego artystycznego rozwoju.

JOANNA TATAREK (CHWASTEK)

Dyplom z „metalu”... godziny, dni spędzone z zakasanymi rękawami i nieodłączną - jakże graficzną - kreską brudu pod paznokciami. Darmowy fitness przy kręceniu korbą pra-sy drukarskiej. Oddychanie zapachem farby. Śniące się po nocach czarne na białym kreski, plamy, znaczki. To wszyst-ko sprawy techniczne, ale realizacja dyplomu wiąże się w  głównej mierze z „zamieszkaniem” w pracowni, ze wspól-

nym byciem z innymi dyplomantami, studentami, asysten-tami, profesorem prowadzącym. Dzielenie się nie tylko dru-gim śniadaniem, wspólne rozwiązywanie napotykanych

„na blasze” problemów. Dyplom to długi i zaskakujący proces powstawania grafik i przyjaźni Miałam wrażenie, że jestem trybikiem wielkiej maszyny graficznej, na którą składały się życzliwość i doświadczenie tych wszystkich ludzi obecnych w pracowni. Dzięki nim łapałam energię do pracy – sama bym nie dała rady. Bardzo Wam dziękuję.

MICHAŁ MINOR

The legendary studio of professor Jan Szmatloch, which is sit-uated in Raciborska Street, consists of: 1. acid room in which was smoke sometimes (I don’t mean a cigarette smoke), 2.cubbyhole with a large wardrobe and a comfortable sofa behind it. From behind that wardrobe one could sometimes hear professor’s cheerful laugh,3. a room with presses in which supposedly one could feel an elusive spirit of Leon Wyczółkowski. This spatial triumvirate has marked up a ritual route of the studio’s life. From time to time I was delight to sidetracked from the route in order to listen to the sounds of blues per-formed by John Mayall and his irreplaceable assistants – Mick Taylor and Chris Barber.  

MAŁGOSIA SZANDAŁA

Rapid steps, white hair, a couple of gestures drawing some imagined forms in the air and then the noises of discussion from behind "the wardrobe". That’s how the professor appeared every morning. Being students of the last year in the studio of metal, we had the privilege of sitting in the same room with the professor and all his guests popping in. we were working (here: three girls) slogging away with the drypoint and slivering sliver, sweating our guts out on the soft varnish. At the same time we were half-present there because "the wardrobe" separated us from professors’ discussions which we were sitting in on, taking a provisional but inspiring part in them. And we sit like that on both sides but all together, drawn by an outline in several spots of tint, veiled with a rosin fog.

ANNA KRZTOŃ

During the second year of my studies I came to the intagl-io printing studio where I achieved my B.A. diploma under supervising of professor Jan Szmatloch. Not only the tech-nique but also the atmosphere in the studio which attracted me then and attracts me now. It is good to work with people who are creative and who can motivate and inspire one an-other. I can say with no doubt that this place became my sec-ond home, if not the first one.

DOROTA NOWAK

The school was very intimate that time and we all know each other. I was particularly fancy of intaglio printing studio where I decided to achieve my M.A. diploma. For me and my colleagues, the very time before getting the diploma was probably the most intense but also the most ex-citing. There was much conceptual work and physical at-tempts in order to create the graphics.Professor Szmatloch watched over his M.A. candidates very carefully and no detail or technical mistake could escape his attention. Corrections were incredibly detailed and they helped with bringing the drawing to perfection. Master Sz-matloch was very demanding but when he finally compli-mented something, this compliment was worth a lot. In my diploma I combined mezzotint and drypoint with dig-ital graphics. That time it was something new. I appreciated the fact that I was free to choose the technique and I could join the classical intaglio techniques with a modern digital medium. For sure it was very important time for my artis-tic development.

JOANNA TATAREK (CHWASTEK)

A diploma from "metal"... hours, whole days spent with rolled sleeves and inseparable (and how artistic!) line of dirt under the nails. Fitness during cranking the handle of the press bed was free of charge. Breathing with the smell of ink. Lines, spots, marks which I was dreaming about every night. That is the technical stuff. But a diploma is more about "dwelling" in the studio, being together with other M.A. can-didates, students, assistants and the supervising professor.

It was not only sharing one’s lunch but also solving togeth-er different problems encountered on a "plate". The diploma is a long and surprising process of creating graphics and re-lationships. I had the feeling that I am a part of some huge graphic ma-chine consisting of friendliness and experience of all those people who were in the studio. Thanks to them I had the en-ergy to work - I couldn’t manage without them. Thank you all.
