Jack Hi Editorial

Big finish to Bowls seasonWelcome to the last edition of Jack Hi for the 2015-16 bowls season which is heavily packed with articles on the various bowls events that were played in an action packed end of the calendar. Every pennant winner both Metro and Country is listed in this edition and congratulations to all the players who did their clubs proud by being involved in a successful season – no doubt there were some fantastic celebrations held. This will be the last printed edition of the Jack Hi distributed into clubs.

The magazine will still retain the current format and be produced quarterly however it will now only be available online via the Bowls WA Website which is now our primary form of communication with members. Whilst many may have packed away the bowls away for winter there are

still plenty keen to get a game. These bowlers should use the centre spread in this magazine to find a local game to keep their eye in until the next season starts.

GRAHAM LEEKSFrom the President

We should all feel proud of the efforts of both teams. My thanks to the coaches’ and selectors for their wonderful job in selecting and guiding the teams.Whist in the ACT I attended Bowls Aust. meetings along with

our CEO Ken Pride. One item of particular interest to come from this meeting for all bowlers is that bowls will be back on commercial TV with a weekly programme on SBS beginning in May. So watch out for this.

Country WeekMen’s and Ladies Country week has now been held and congratulations to all our winners. The competition was keen and as always played in good

spirit and friendship. My thanks to those clubs who were able to help with the hosting of some of the games.A highlight for me was the opportunity prior to the start of

the men’s metro versus country all-stars game to present a cheque for $15,000 to the Yarloop Bowling club to assist club members recover from the devastating fires. These funds came from the generosity of many metro and country clubs.

Presidents’ ForumIn late February we held a Presidents’ Forum at the South Perth Bowling Club attended by 55 clubs. This is the best attendance we have ever had in the 6 years that I have been involved with this forum. The good attendance was no doubt due to two important

agenda items, the first being the proposed change from the current capitation levy paid by members to a fixed fee paid by the club and the second was the planned changes to the pennant season format for the 2017-18 season.

Awards DinnerThe Bowls WA award dinner will be held at the Crown Perth on Friday May 27th. This is the night when we recognise and celebrate the achievements of our bowlers, volunteers and clubs. We welcome this year the attendance of the President

and CEO of Bowls Australia and the Minister for Sport and Recreation. So organise a table of 10 and be there to join in the fun.

Another pennant season has concluded with many clubs celebrating premiership wins and promotions and many new flags on club walls. No club would be celebrating more than Bassendean who won their first ever Premier League pennant in a nail biting last bowl finish over the minor premiers Cambridge. What a great finals day it was at the Yokine club in front of a

large and appreciative crowd all the finals - Premier League, 1 White and 1 Blue were all won on the last bowl of the game. The ladies midweek finals were not quite so dramatic, but

there was still some close games and it was a great spectacle with all divisions playing their final at Osborne Park in front of a big and noisy crowd.

Side SeriesI was privileged to attend the Side Series in ACT but funnily enough it was played over the border in NSW at two Queanbeyan clubs. I watched both our men’s and ladies teams do battle with the best players from around the Country. Our ladies team was sensational, only losing to the eventual winners NSW which includes a number of Australian players. Our ladies finished in second place a huge improvement over the previous year. Our men battled hard with the highlight being a good win

over Queensland and whilst we finished 6th this did not reflect the quality of the games with many being very close, none more so than against Victoria the eventual winners.

What a finish to ourmetropolitan pennant season!

KEN PRIDE

From the Chief Executive Officer

On the 1st division finals day all three games, including the Premier League Grand Final came down to the last bowl, quite extraordinary in that over an 18 game, six month season, everything came down to the last ten seconds – all well planned of course !In fact I was fortunate in watching or being involved in five

finals over the two days and each went down to the wire, with one having extra ends played to determine a winner.Who ever said that bowls wasn’t exciting, clearly hasn’t

played the game.

Pennant Changes in the windFollowing a very well attended Metro Presidents’ Forum (55/66 clubs) details on a revamped pennant season for 2017/18 were shared. Key components of the changes include a 14 game, eight team pennant competition, a new four week APL style/ format competition hosted on a round robin basis amongst four clubs, with an extended Christmas/New Year break, where State Events will be scheduled. This break may also provide clubs with the opportunity to

finalise club championships if they wish. The general format was enthusiastically received by those in

attendance, with specifics to be completed by the Fixtures and Events Committee for approval by the Bowls Management Committee in April. Following that further detail will be provided to all metropolitan clubs at a meeting likely to be in late May/early June.

State teams do WA proudI was fortunate to be able to attend the Sides Series in early April at Queanbeyan. I have now been to several of these events and I must say the teams representing WA were fantastic. The ladies in winning a silver medal were at times inspirational

and a tighter unit, led so well by coach Therese Hastings, needed to be witnessed first hand. Only the Australian laden NSW outfit defeated them, before a stellar run ensured a well deserved medal. The men although not showing on the stats sheet were equally impressive, with narrow losing margins the order of the day.Never once did they let a disappointing result stand in the

way of a 100% effort in the next game with matches against Queensland (win) and Victoria (loss) particular highlights. The debutants were outstanding in particular and showed that we are not that far behind the other well performing states and territories. Congratulations to Kristina, Shenayde and Lewis for winning the respective player of the series awards – well deserved.

National titles to be re-introducedFollowing a submission from Bowls Victoria, the ability to win a national title will again be offered. Current state title holders will be invited to fight for the national title in their particular discipline, with a likely commencement date in November 2016. Specific dates and venues are yet to be confirmed, but after a decade long absence Bowls WA looks forward to the event’s reintroduction.

Awards Night – 27th MayI am really looking forward to our major off field event of the year, the Bowls WA Awards Night. This year Clint Wheeldon from the ABC will guide proceedings,

with the Minister for Sport and Recreation, President and CEO of Bowls Australia all accepting invitations. It is our night of nights and I encourage all who enjoy a

great evening to join us in celebrating the achievements of our finest clubs, players and volunteers.

Bowls back on TVGreat news from Bowls Australia who have negotiated the return of bowls to our free to air stations. The Bowls Show comprising 20 x 1 hour shows will

commence on SBS1 from 15th May until the 26th September on a Sunday afternoon from 1.00pm – 2.00pm. With a combination of bowls action, interviews and game tips from the world’s best it promises to be a great watch. It is critical that viewing numbers / ratings impress to allow

for even further broadcast coverage of our sport – tune in and spread the word. Posters promoting the show will be forwarded to all clubs and we encourage clubs to show them prominently.

MICHAEL GOBLE-GARRATT

From the Umpires

Laws of the GameMeasuring and declaring the score by thirds

Measuring and declaring the score by thirds – We all know the thirds in fours usually do the measuring and deciding, by mutual agreement, who has the shot/s and declare the result to the scorecard holder – in Australian domestic games, the Second as allowed in the Laws and detailed in the Domestic Regulations appended to the Laws Of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark 3rd edition, introduced in January 2015.Many thirds would not be fully aware of their role and/or

the rules pertaining to conducting measures under Law 40.2: The third.40.2.1 The third can measure any and all disputed shots.40.2.2 The third can tell the skip the number of shots scored for or against their team as each end is completed. As simple as this may seem, the role is an important one

requiring some degree of diligence and an understanding of the consequence of not conducting measures correctly. Poor measures and premature declaration of the shot/s prior to the agreement of the opposing third, can and do lead to considerable misunderstanding of the Laws and disputes that can escalate. It requires some knowledge of several other rules of the

game – such as what constitutes an ‘end’; what happens if one third removes what he/she considers the shot before the agreement of the opposing third; what happens when a bowl on its running surface is not ‘chocked’ and during the measuring it falls, either as a result of being touched by the third doing the measure, or of its own accord; between what points of the jack and bowl to measure; how to measure from a bowl on the green and a jack in the ditch; etc.Law C.7 End: delivery of the jack, delivery of all the bowls required to be played by all of the opponents in the same direction on a rink, and deciding the number of shots scored. So if anything occurs before completion of the whole process that constitutes an end, then other appropriate Laws apply.Law 22.2: No bowl must be moved until the opponents have agreed whether it is a shot or not, except where a bowl has to be moved so that another bowl can be measured. So if one third removes a bowl before agreement that it is shot, then this constitutes ‘displacement of a bowl by a player’ and is then subject to replacement to its former position by the opposing third before then reaching agreement (see Laws of displacement – Section 2.3 – Bowl and jack displacement).Law 23.6 in its entirety, defines the courses of action required if a bowl is likely to fall (as it is on its running surface) and what happens in the cases where a bowl does fall – of its own accord or if knocked over during measure or if the jack is moved during the measure by one player or the other.

Law 23.4: All measurements must be made between the nearest points of the jack and the bowl. Being spheroids of differing dimensions, the nearest point of the jack to the bowl is a sloping distance not, as has been witnessed on some occasions, a horizontal measure to the bowl at the the same level of the jack.

Law 23.5: When measuring between a jack in the ditch and a bowl on the green or a jack on the green and a bowl in the ditch, the measurement must be carried out using a flexible or string measure whenever possible. In the case of the jack in the ditch measure, the measure should be conducted in the opposite way to the normal on-green string or tape measure, in that it is measured from the bowl to the jack using the string measure or a suitable measure with a flexible tip when a string measure is not available. Note the closest part of the jack is NOT now at the centre of the sphere facing forward, but toward the top!

If the thirds cannot agree the shot/s in any end or if there is some dispute over the consequence of a bowl or jack having been moved by a player, then they should ask for the skip/s to call for the Umpire who will adjudicate on the matter in line with the appropriate statute, after hearing the the comments from both sides. If the Umpire is called to determine a close measure, he/she should really use the best available equipment for the purpose. If trammels are used, it should be remembered that they must be aligned against from the least-likely moved object – the bowl (wedged if necessary), and the callipers measure between the small end of the trammel to the jack. Remember also that the alignment between jack and bowl should be made from behind the bowl, in line with the jack.

• Callipers being used to measure to the jack due to a wedged bowl.

Cambridge’s Pieter Harris is the 2016 Men’s Champion of Champions Singles winner defeating fellow State Representative Manning’s Thomas Mitchell 25-11 in the final. It marks the second year in a row the

Cambridge representative has won the event. It’s also Harris’ second Champion of Champions title with his first coming nineteen years ago in 1997. Harris got better as the day went on winning each knockout game by more than his previous on the way to the title.Mitchell played Rod Cooper of

Kalamunda in his semi final and started very strongly scoring the first nine shots of the match. Cooper started to warm into the match winning four of the next five ends to close the deficit to five shots but Mitchell seemed determined to kill the game off quickly.A three followed by a four took the score

to 18-6 and the result seemed to be a formality. Cooper scored the next two shots but Mitchell had too much in his locker and powered away again to run out a 25-9 winner.Harris played his semi final against Wagin’s

perennial Country All Star Warren Holt. Holt started well to jump out to a 6-1 lead but Harris found his rhythm to get back 7-6.

Harris claimsthe covetedSingles Crown

That was the last time Holt would be in front as Harris rattled off twelve unanswered shots to lead 18-7.

Holt would score a single against the flow but Harris replied with a three and a one on the

following end put himself in a winning position with a 22-7 lead. Determined

to give himself a chance Holt won three of the next four ends but it

wasn’t enough as Harris finished it off 25-12.The final between Harris and

Mitchell started well for Harris as he picked up three on the first

end followed by a two. Mitchell responded with two ones but Harris

pulled them back immediately. Another single to Mitchell was

followed by a four to Harris giving him an eight shot lead. Mitchell recovered

well however getting all four shots back within two ends to get back to 11-7 down.

It looked like it would be a tight game with Mitchell having won more ends than Harris but Harris put the foot down. Eight shots in four ends powered him

away to a 19-7 lead and despite a rally from Mitchell who scored four of the next

five shots Harris scored a two and a three in succession to finish the game at 25-11.

The 2016 Women’s Champion of Champions Singles was won by Mosman Park’s Lisa Featherby. Featherby defeated Jenny Alexander of Warwick in the final 25-7 to win her first Champion of Champions title.Featherby showed her quality throughout the tournament

winning by more than five shots in all but one of her games with that win coming against fellow s t a t e representative Hailey Adams in the semi final.Alexander played State Pairs runner

up Angela Gunson of Morley in her semi-final in a tight contest in which neither player was able to hold a substantial lead for any amount of time. The tone was set early in the game as the players fought to 5-5. Alexander then manufactured an opportunity and scored seven shots in the next three ends to break away for the first time in the game at 12-5.In what would become a common

theme throughout the match Gunson fought back to score the next eight shots to take the lead 13-12. Alexander bolted again but much slower this time, winning the next seven ends for eight shots and looked likely togo on at 20-13. However Gunsonresponded again picking up three two’s and a single to get back to even at20-20. Alexander tried to push awayagain with a two on the next end butGunson was determined to stay in itand won the next end. It was the lastshot she would pick up as Alexander scored three shots over the next two ends to win a tight match 25-21.

The semi final between Featherby and Osborne Park’s Adams didn’t go entirely to script for the eventual champion.Things had started well enough when Featherby picked up a

three to take a 7-5 lead but Adams couldn’t have responded any better claiming a maximum four. From there she took control due largely to another maximum four ends later.Having won seven of the last eight ends Adams lead 19-8

and was in control looking the likely winner. Featherby’s fighting spirit came out as she picked up five shots

before conceding again and then picked up six in three ends afterwards to get

back to 20-19 down with all the momentum.

Adams tried to claw the momentum back winning a single on the next end to go two shots ahead but it wasn’t

enough. Featherby winning four more ends to pick up the six shots she needed to win 25-21.After two tight semi finals

one could expect another hard fought game in the final.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the case as Featherby powered away

early. Alexander won the first end but lost the next nine as Featherby picked

up two threes and a four during her run to put herself in an almost unassailable position at 18-1 in front. To Alexander’s

credit she fought back to make sure the deficit did not become any worse but the match was over seven ends later, Featherby winning four of them, to become the champion with a 25-7 victory.

Boddington Bowling Club, on the outskirts of Perth, is punching well above its weight in the fundraising department. With just 50 members, the effort over the past few years has been nothing short of outstanding. In 2007, the club started running a ‘Bowl Over Cancer’ day

to raise funds for the Cancer Council of WA – in fact, every cent of profit for the day goes to the Cancer Council. A slowish start in 2007 saw the club raise $1,000 with 34 bowlers attending the day – little did they know what it would become. The 2016 event attracted 208 entrants in 52 teams of fours!

Players were encouraged to don interesting outfits rather than your regular everyday bowls gear, and the focus of the day was fun and inclusiveness – everyone was welcome. The bottom line was a staggering $22,000 donated to the Cancer Council of WA.George Batt, instigator of the event and member of the

club, has a true passion for community events that can raise awareness, educate people and generally bring people together for a common cause. The cause here is the fight to cure cancer. The generosity of local volunteers as well as the community

as a whole, including businesses in the area was phenomenal. Advertising the event, preparing posters, goods donated or provided at cost – the list goes on. From the cooks on the BBQ and the spit, to those that manned the bar or prepared meals in the kitchen – they were all so crucial to a successful day.

$70,000 – an incredible achievement and testament to the fact that things can start slow and build to amazing successes. To all clubs that are looking to start a programme, or start an event, don’t be put off if it starts slowly – push ahead and give it your all to succeed – who knows what can happen?

Men’s Pennant Finals

• The Bassendean Lions celebrate their biggest success in the club’s history.

The Bassendean Bowling Club celebrated their biggest success in the club’s history when they won their first ever BCiB Premier League Pennant as another successful season of metropolitan pennants was concluded with eight Saturday and Midweek pennants handed out.The biggest week on the bowls calendar is the Pennant finals

and with three Saturday first division grand finals played at Yokine Bowling Club the atmosphere was electric as all three games came to a thrilling conclusion late on Sunday afternoon March 20th.The first final to finish was the Stirling v South Perth match,

both sides were guaranteed a return to Premier League but it was evident both also wanted a flag to go with the promotion.Despite a massive 36-9 win by the Stirling rink skipped by

Kyle McIlroy it was Stirling who were behind coming into the last few ends of the contest.Glenn Pauling’s rink of Neale Griffin, Tony Percival and Ken

Pride had counter-acted that result however Pauling found himself under plenty of pressure when four down on the last end of his match and the penultimate of the aggregate. However once again his terrific draw skills came to the fore

and he drew in for shot to give his side a 32-8 win over Geoff White. More importantly it meant the last side had a three shot buffer to play with.Despite the best efforts of Stirling skip Daniel Trewhella his

team could only pick up two shots and it left South Perth to celebrate a deserved pennant success.

Happening at almost the same time the One Blue final was just as close. Only 1 shot separated the sides as Morley and Mosman Park had battled it out in a very tight contest. As can often happen in pennants the rink with the biggest

deficit was looking to be the savours as Morley’s team of John Armstrong, Murray Robinson, Greg Armstrong and Gavin Grieve trailed the Mosman Park of Graeme Wishart, David Armstrong, Clint Nagtegaal and Mark Robertson 23-15 going into the last end.Things looked bad for Morley

with the Mosman Park rink holding two very good shots which is what was needed for victory. Armstrong however played perhaps the bowl of his career drawing ever so close to claim shot and the pennant flag. After those two close finishes it was only fitting that the Premier League final should end in even more dramatic circumstances.

Cambridge who had been the team to beat all year finishing a clear top of the table had trounced Bassendean in the semi final 92-74 however the final was proving a much tougher challenge. The scores ebbed and flowed as both teams

gave there all in a high quality display on the excellent Yokine green. With already a big crowd in attendance the

numbers grew even more as the supporters and players from the other two grand finals moved over to watch the last few ends play out. Fittingly two of the competition best rinks were left on the green with the aggregate level. The Cambridge team of Pieter Harris, Nick

Lewis, Ted Leahy and Greg Kane had the upper hand on the last end with a couple of good counters.Young skip Blake Nairn with his side of David

Von Horn, Simon Alden and Beau Manton was having a stellar year but produced two of his best bowls when it mattered most. His first shot he managed to disturb the head

and spring the jack out the back and into open territory. After Harris had played a solid bowl to finish

around 4 feet from the jack Nairn steadied himself with the hopes of his team and club on his shoulders.Showing composure beyond his years he put

the bowl out on a good track and even before it had come to rest next to the jack Nairn knew he had the match winner and let out a roar of excitement, the other Bassendean players had swamped the green with Nairn and his team to begin the victory celebrations.

The Men’s Midweek pennant finals were completed on March 24th with the Bassendean Bowling Club recording a rare Saturday-Midweek double after they defeated Manning 60-51. Despite only a nine shot margin Bassendean accounted for their opposition on all three rinks with margins of four, four and one.Nine of the twelve players had only four days earlier been apart of the Saturday Pennant success. Bassendean have now strung together a remarkable run of pennant wins having graduated from 2nd Division to Premier League resulting in winning four pennant flags in the last five years. The story of the day occurred at Innaloo who hosted Cockburn. When

the dust had settled both teams were level with the aggregate drawn resulting in all three rinks going out to play an extra end. The home side Innaloo just fared the better getting home by 1 shot 63-62.The one blue pennant final was won rather impressively by Sorrento

who are one of the bigger metro clubs and also won the second division midweek flag. They trounced opposition Gosnells with an 81-37 thumping. The win set up by the rink skippered by Mick Martin who won 35-6.

Women’s Pennant Finals

Fourteen teams represented by twelve clubs, with seven taking home a Pennant flag, from all corners of metro WA took to the greens at Osborne Park Bowling Club on Wednesday 23rd March to play out the Grand Finals in the Women’s BCiB Tuesday Pennant Competition. In the Premier Division heavy favourites Manning built a

solid early lead and were never headed despite a late rally by rivals Mosman Park. Manning who are littered with State Representatives had a big 27-15 win with Australian player Kristina Krstic and her team of Rechelle Cole, Shari Solly and Toni Madigan playing extremely well. The 1st White Grand Final again went

to the favoured side as top of the table Thornlie who had plenty of experienced players especially in the skipper department finished convincing 14 shot winners over Mundaring. Both teams will now return to

Premier League next year.In 1st Green South it was a Safety Bay derby after both

sides had defeated top of the table Mosman Park (who gained automatic promotion) to make the grand final. After a good tussle Safety Bay 1 proved the winner mainly courtesy of the rink of Laurie Kenward with Wendy Jones, Lesley White and Patricia Gandy who won 27-16.1st Blue North proved rather dramatic as the semi finals

played on Monday went to extra ends.

Manning a dominant forcein Tuesday Competition

• Manning’s Women Premier League team win the BCiB Premier League Pennant Final.

The grand final proved to be a replay with Joondalup against Mundaring. This time Joondalup won much more convincing with a 10 shot victory. Kerry Stewart with Val Buck, Kay Hill and Myrna Sabel doing the major damage winning 24-16.In the minor divisions a couple of very close matches were

played out. Leeming went into the last end holding a two shot aggregate lead against Manning. On a tense final end

the jack was dragged to within three feet of the ditch by Leeming before the Manning third landed a

bowl right on the Jack. The Leeming skip was able to draw a very good second shot within six inches of the jack and that proved too difficult to beat giving Leeming the narrowest of wins. In third division Byford also

overcame a close match against Warnbro winning by four shots.

Lauris Gibbs with Marie Bolingbroke, Tess Harvey and Anne Williamson

proved the big winners with a 27-15 score line.4th Division proved a more decisive result

as one of the smaller clubs Pickering Brook was rewarded for an outstanding season

remaining undefeated all year. The win was set up by a huge 36-9 win by the

rink of Gina Altinier, Wendy Kerr, Judith Petrucci and Mollie Weston.

Manning at it again– now on Saturday

Manning Bowling Club stole the show as the Ladies Saturday Pennant finals were completed on March 12th.With four pennant flags up for grabs Manning fielded

teams in three finals and came away with two flags. The 1st Red team had proved dominant all year, in fact

their only stumble was the last round of home and away fixtures were they lost by 7 shots to Mundaring. In the finals they returned to their best again winning the

semi-final 44-30 against Gosnells before a huge 45-25 win in the grand final. 1st Blue saw Manning once again take the flag albeit

in much closer circumstances. A narrow 5 shot win in the semi final against Osborne Park was followed up by a thrilling final against Leeming who had finished top of the table and won their semi by 7 shots against Rossmoyne. When the last end of scheduled play was completed the

aggregate was drawn requiring both teams to go back out and play an extra end. Manning proved a little too good securing two shots and the flag.

2nd Division to LeemingThe 2nd division title went to Leeming away to Innaloo.

It was perhaps a bitter pill to swallow for the Innaloo ladies as they were undefeated all year until losing the final. The 3rd Division flag saw Manning involved again however they were beaten by 10 shots by Belmont City.

On Friday the 11th of March Kardinya Bowling Club hosted the Ladies Friday Night Pennant Grand Final with Kardinya Red versus Bedford White.Tensions high, Kardinya teams skippered by Linda Favazzo and Janet Yakas, number two and four skips on the Red ladder faced off against Bedford’s Wendy Stone and Anita Turpin, number two and five skips on the White Ladder so a close match was expected.Kardinya’s rink with Yakas skip started with a bang, holding

four then three then five in the first few ends and the fast start proved the difference, they kept up the momentum to win the game 27 to 11.The other match saw Bedford gain the early ascendancy

however a late rally by Favazzo’s rink saw the margin close to a final score of 9-13.Kardinya were therefore crowned the Friday Night Grand Final

Winners 36-24, ending the evening on a laugh when the flag was presented missing the ‘F’ in Friday (as seen in the photo) so it was with chuckles that Kardinya is in a unique position to be the only ever club to win the ‘Women’s Riday Night BCIB Pennant Winner’! Bowls WA subsequently replaced the flag with the missing ‘F’ included.

Kardy Kats claim Friday flag

Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone who participated in the finals of the BCiB Women’s Pennant Competitions for 2015-16.

win WAUnder 18s

championship

Gnowangerup’s Nathaniel Fuge and Meadow Spring’s Georgia Cant have taken out the Boys and Girls Western Australian Under 18 Singles Championship respectively.Fuge came through his sectional play games full of confidence

with 2 comfortable wins before downing Jack Campbell (Maylands) 21-9 in the first of the boy’s semi finals. In the 2nd semi final last years champion Patrick Quinlan (Osborne Park) had to work very hard to overcome Carnarvon’s Corey Day 21-18 to set up the final between the two most experience boys in the championships. After a good start by both players but it was Fuge who slowly

pulled away in the middle stages of the game always having the answers. At 21-14 it looked like only a matter of time but Quinlan then started to show his championship winning talents. Getting back to the draw game, Quinlan put the

pressure on and looked like he had broken his older opponent when he got to with in one of victory and took the lead 24-22. The last end was a tense affair with Quinlan struggling to find the length leaving Fuge holding two shots with the last bowl left in his hand.

• Nathaniel Fuge.

Under 18 Championships

Needing to get three, Fuge rode some luck by being slightly on the tight side before seeing his bowl wriggle past the closest Quinlan shot to win the Under 18 Boys State Singles.Georgia Cant had fewer games to win but still had to

perform at a high level for her state title. With only three girls in this years competition, Cant first took care of Olivia Cross (Warnbro) 21-6 and then went in all guns blazing against state teammate Kellie Ainsworth (Warnbro) to take the game 21-5 and the Under 18 Girls State Singles. The Under 18 Any Gender Triples and Pairs showed where

the strength of this years competitors were. The triples saw Patrick Quinlan, Nathaniel Fuge team up with Daniel

Ainsworth (Warnbro) to defeat Ashton Hagboom (Goomalling) Sanjay D’Cruz (Innaloo) and Ben Leggett (Joondalup) 16-8 in the final. The pairs saw Quinlan and Fuge again go

up against each other in an Under 18 final. However this time it was Quinlan who came out

on top with his partner Corey Day (Carnarvon) defeating Fuge and Daniel Ainsworth 15-9 to

win the Under 18 State Pairs Championship.

Mosman Park Bowling Club in conjunction with Key Choice Financial Solutions was pleased to again host and sponsor the Ladies Masters Singles over the long weekend in March.Mosman Park had worked hard to again increase the entries

to the event with 42 ladies taking to the greens. The knockout event held over two days was down to the

quarter finals by Saturday morning, with some classic match ups and many quality games with very close margins. In the later knockout stages Bev Baker (Mosman Park) took on Roma Dunn (Dudley Park) with a standard of game to match any state final with Roma prevailing 25/22.Cathy Sullivan (North Beach) played Liz Matthews (Manning)

in another hard fought contest driving to kill the end when Liz was holding game. Cathy won the next end to win 25/24.Jo Lancaster (Beacon) took on Jaewyn Norton (Osborne

Park) jumping out to a significant and surprising lead only to be pegged back by Jaewyn during the course of the game.Jo got back on track to sneak over the line also 25/24. Toni

Madigan (Manning) played Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) also had a classic struggle with Toni playing at her best to defeat Kerry in a quality game 25/17.The semi finals were played with the increasing wind with

Roma defeating Cathy 25/3, whereas Toni and Jo fought it out 25/21.With Roma never having won this particular event and with

Jo keen to make her mark it was always going to be a hard contest. Roma had a reasonable break after the semi, while Jo was asked to get right back on the green.Neither had lost their intensity or abilities and it was a worthy

final. Roma finally prevailing 25/19 to put yet another trophy in the cupboard after a well deserved win.The organiser’s are considering changes to the event next

year to enable those that work to have knockout rounds on the Saturday with the intent of further increasing participation, prestige and prize money. Many thanks to Samantha Hamilton of Key Choice Financial

Solutions in Subiaco for the ongoing support with this competition.– Lisa Featherby, Mosman Park Bowling Club

• Roma Dunn wins the Ladies Masters Singles title at Mosman Park.Mitchell and Butler

outstandingThe Nexus sponsored Doubleview Masers Pairs once again attracted a full field of 64 teams with plenty of quality pairs taking to the greens.Tom Mitchell and Rhett Butler won the event for the

second time with an impressive display of bowling. Mitchell and Butler have proven to be an exceptional pairs combination and must really like the Doubleview greens as it was the 4th straight year they have made the final which given the quality of opposition is a remarkable effort. In the final they played Doubleview’s David Rankin

who was played with Osborne Park’s Lewis Grigg. Rankin and Grigg has been in very good form leading up to the final having earier beaten the Cockburn pair of Sam Perica and Mike Zusman.Mitchell and Butler had survived three very close

knockout matches to reach the final including a 19-17 win over the Kardinya team of Daryl Radford and Dinko Golem. On paper the final looked to be a game that could

go right to the very last bowl and despite Rankin and Grigg playing well Thomas Mitchell played a simply outstanding game to thwart whatever efforts the opposition could muster. Ably supported by the always consistent team mate Butler it was Mitchell whose draw shot ability was outstanding especially considering the windy/rainy conditions that were present. Mitchell was able to land bowls on the jack at will during the match and when needed to convert a situation to his teams advantage. The longer the match went the bigger the margin as a 13-2 lead blew out to a large 20-4 advantage. Grigg and Rankin managed to apply more pressure however Mitchell and Butler were happy to concede small numbers in the later stages before finally claiming the title with the final score 21-9.

Matthew wins brotherly battleMatthew Mitchell, Matthew Ayres and Miles Kemp from Manning are the 2016 Henselite Men’s State Triples champions winning the final played in wet conditions at Morley Bowling Club.It was a family affair in the final with Mitchell’s

brother Thomas skipper of the composite side that finished runners-up along with Shane Knott and David Farley. The Manning side started their semi-final against

Ben Garrett, Alan Cowie and Russell Bates strongly with back to back threes to start the match. From there they never lost control of the game with

a four end run between ends five and eight securing their dominant position. The lead 15-2 after eight

ends and although Garrett won four of the next five ends but a four from Mitchell on the 14th

end ended any chance of a comeback.

• Matthew Mitchell.

Tom Mitchell and his side played against premier league grand final hero Blake Nairn and his side of James Webster and Cody Packer in their semi-final match. The match started extremely tight with no scores greater than two in the first twelve

ends. Then the game opened up as Mitchell and Nairn each picked up threes.Another three from Mitchell was followed by just a single from Nairn to make it 13-11

however a two on the next end meant that Nairn needed the largest count of the game on the final end to go to an extra end. Instead Nairn dropped three trying to get the shots

needed and Mitchell and his side won 18-11 to make the final. The final started just as tight as the composite side’s semi-final.

The Manning side won the next three ends but a three from the composite team ensured they remained in touch at 8-7 after twelve ends. Then the Manning side managed to open up an advantage. A single on the thirteenth followed by a four gave them a six shot lead. With four ends to play the equation was starting to look tough for Tom and his side considering

how tight the game had been. The game had started to open up though and it continued to do so as the composite boys scored a one and then a count of three. At 13-11 with two ends to play it looked to be a tense final two ends to play out.

The seventeenth end loomed as critical as any score to the Manning team would make it extremely tough for them to be run down. As it turned out they were able to score a five, the biggest score of the game. Their 18-11 lead was insurmountable and the game was over with them as 2016 State Triples winners. This the first state title for Matt Mitchell and Kemp.

Henselite Men’s and Women’s State Triples

‘No one could get more than one shot out of an end and aftereight ends the scores were level at 4-4.’

• Dave Farley and Shane Knots watch a bowl coming down.

The match lasted justone more end whereMitchell picked uptwo to lead 23-7and Garrett conceded the match.

Manning trio too good They defeated Bev Baker, Wendy Stower and Gail Sedgewick from

Mosman Park in the final played on heavy greens on a rainy day at Morley. They survived a number of close shaves with their last four games of the

tournament all decided by five shots or less.Matthews had the unenviable task of getting through defending champions and

club mates Helen Morss, Therese Hastings and Toni Madigan in the semi-final.Things started poorly and the team found themselves down 10-0 after just six ends. However

Matthews rallied her side and won the next five ends including a five on the eleventh end to take the lead 11-10. In the last seven ends neither side scored more than two on an end. After three ends Matthews side still held their one shot lead but gave themselves a small amount of

breathing space with a two on the 16th end. It was as much space as was needed as Morss picked up only two singles on the last two ends and they held on to win 16-15.The Mosman girls started their semi-final against fellow team mates Lisa Featherby, Renate Coote

and Linda Warburton strongly picking up a four on the second end to give them the early scoreboard ascendancy. However four ends later Featherby had wrestled the game back and the scores were level at 6-6.The two sides spilt the next four ends but two fours to Featherby saw her side in control at 14-9 after

ten ends and in poll position to take a place in the final. Then Baker and her side took control and dominated the rest of the game. They lost only one end for the rest of the game as they powered over the top of Featherby scoring eleven shots over seven winning ends to win 20-16. Baker and her side picked up where they left off to start the final winning six of the first seven ends. With the score at 11-1 the Mosman ladies looked to be in unstoppable form, now up nineteen shots over the last fifteen ends they had played. However Matthews repeated the pattern of the semi final and got back into the game. A three on the eighth end and a five on the eleventh meant that the Manning side were right back in it with plenty of ends remaining.Although Baker was still up by three shots the momentum was now firmly with the Manning girls,

especially with a proven ability to comeback as shown in the semi-final. After that high scoring burst from Mathews the game tightened right up with six singles in the last seven ends. Five of these ends went to Matthews including the only double completing their second big comeback for the day, winning them the match and the State Triples title at 16-14.

Spearwood take titlesSpearwood bowlers were to the fore at the Osborne Park Bowling Club when the 2nd Division and Under Singles and Pairs were completed over a very rainy Easter weekend.Heavy rain forced a complete abandonment of one day of

play and some delays on others, however matches were able to be caught up albeit with some late finishes and a reduced format. In the singles it was an extremely tight contest played right

down to the last bowl. Spearwood’s Ned Gaspar coming up with the winning shot after scores were tied at 20 all to claim the event in dramatic circumstances. The pairs produced a more comfortable win for his Spearwood team mates in Ken Nadilo and Ivan Unkovich who played well to beat a local Osborne Park pair of Allen and Mikolacjczyk.

Good bowls in difficult conditionsThe Women’s Inter Region Round Robin Fours was completed over the weekend April 9th and 10th hosted by the Southern Region and played at Gosnells Bowling Club. This event is unique in that players are selected on a

points basis dependant on which division they are playing in pennant competition and as such players of various ability play together for their respective region.Despite very difficult conditions with persistent rain and very

strong winds all players produced some good bowls under trying circumstances. As usual the competition was played in terrific spirits with the final result in doubt until the last match was completed.

Spousal Maintenance Orders –when is enough enough?

This article is not proposed to be an in-depth discussion about spousal maintenance but is designed to highlight some important points for you to consider.

I was recently asked an interesting question regarding a spousal maintenance order that was made by the Family Court of Western Australia about 2 years earlier.

The husband, who we will call Peter, wanted to find out if his ex-wife from whom he was divorced, who we will call Jane, could take him to Court and request he pay her more money above the already agreed spousal maintenance figure of $500 per week. Peter was planning on signing a multimillion dollar contract which would have meant in the long term he would make a lot money. Peter was apprehensive about signing the contract if Jane could seek an increase to her spousal maintenance.

On the face of it, Jane can apply to the Court to get an increase in her spousal maintenance.

However, an important requirement is to prove Jane circumstances have changed substantially.

In the case of Vailes & Vailes, the Court said a general change per se does not mean there should be a variation/increase to a spousal maintenance order. The nature of the change must be so great or so significant for a variation or increase to be warranted.

In other words, if there is a change, it is not mandatory that the spousal maintenance order should be varied or increased.

Substantial changes in circumstances include, but are not limited to, an increase or decrease in income, disability, inability to work, mental health issues, or any other factors which show there is a difference between when the spousal maintenance order was made to the present.

Economic concerns such as cost of living or the appropriateness of the amount ordered will be considered. The Court will also consider Peter’s ability to make the payments and whether his circumstances have changed.

Peter can also apply to the Court to get the spousal maintenance order discharged. Peter will have to prove a substantial change of circumstances for himself and Jane. Peter needs to prove, for example, Jane now is in receipt of a much higher income than him or the children of the marriage (or de facto relationship) are no longer in Jane’s care.

If Peter succeeds in getting the spousal maintenance order discharged, Jane will have to make a new application to the Court to seek spousal maintenance. Jane will have to obtain special permission, known as leave of the Court, to do so.

If the previous spousal maintenance order has been discharged, the Court may be unwilling to give Jane leave to apply.

You will need to seek legal advice as special clauses would need to be drafted and included to ensure any, or all, spousal maintenance orders are finalised.

This article is for general information purposes only and should in no way be construed as a substitute for independent legal advice. Should you have any queries about this article or require any legal advice please do not hesitate to contact us at FLSD.

What if Peter is no longer in a position to pay Jane or he has become bankrupt? Peter can also apply to the Court to get the spousal maintenance order discharged. Despite the existence of a spousal maintenance order, the Court may decline to enforce the order if it is not in Peter’s best interests. The Court will review any substantial changes in circumstances.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive review of spousal maintenance orders. We suggest you obtain legal advice from a family lawyer to discuss the facts regarding whether or not spousal maintenance may apply in your matter.

Unlikely pairing take the title

Steve Hughes (Melville) and Otto Dawson (Manning) are the newly crowned AERO Bowls Men’s State Over 60’s Pairs champions.Played at Osborne Park Bowling Club they defeated

local pair and current Over 60’s Triples champions Steve O’Neill and Grant Nicol in a thrilling finish. The team came together in unusual circumstances

when a late pull-out meant that Hughes would be without a partner before finding Dawson who had been on the late entry list with another player. The final was a game of spurts with Hughes and Dawson surging ahead twice to be reeled in by O’Neill and Nicol. The first and possibly most telling of these came in

the first seven ends where, despite only winning four of the ends, Hughes and Dawson found themselves 9-3 in front, due mainly to a four on the seventh end.The next four ends went to the Osborne Park boys

who scored five shots in that time to bring the score back to 9-8 and make it well and truly a contest again. This surge was then matched by Hughes and Dawson

who went on a four end run of their own to earn themselves a seven shot advantage after fifteen ends. With just three ends left O’Neill and Nicol needed a

way back and got it with a three on the sixteenth to reduce the deficit to four. A single on the penultimate end kept their hopes alive with the score at 15-12.With the locals needing four to win and three to take the

contest to an extra end Hughes and Dawson successfully held on, dropping only a single to win 15-13.

Lindsay Thorn and Kerry Andersen are back to back Senior’s Recreation Council Over 60’s Mixed Pairs champions defeating Kathy Gobbart and Bill Savell 18-15 the final at Gosnells Bowling Club.Earlier in the day Gobbart and Savell set the tone early in their

semi final encounter against Steve O’Neill and Kaye Blackwell. They scored nine shots in the opening three ends to take the match by the scruff of the neck. A further eight ends later and Gobbart held a commanding 17-2 lead. O’Neill would win just two more ends whilst a three and a five to Gobbart and Savell secured an early finish as they won impressively 26-8.Conversely Thorn and Andersen started their semi-final match

against Pat Caffell and Julie Savell in a tight battle. At 4-2 it was a promising start which was followed by a one and then a massive five to put Thorn and Anderson in a dominant position. The next six ends included nine shots to Caffell causing the lead to change hands on the thirteenth end. Thorn took it right back two ends later though and the score was 12-11. A three on the next end to Thorn extended the advantaged to four and a single on the next end meant that Caffell and Savell needed five shots just to force an extra end. Thorn and Andersen closed off strongly scoring a two to win 18-11.Thorn and Andersen continued on from their strong finish in

their previous game to start the final impressively, after eight ends they lead 12-3 due in large part to a five and a three to take command of the game. Gobbart won the next end and a seemingly innocuous single changed the game as they reclaimed the mat for the first time in six ends and went long. It paid off immediately with a three to close the gap to five and closed to just two shots behind with four ends left to play. The plan came unstuck on the next end when Thorn scored a three and another two made it extremely tough for Gobbart at 18-11 down with just two ends to go. A two kept the game alive for Gobbart but needing five shots for an extra end they could only manage two and Thorn and Anderson kept their record as the only WA Mixed Over 60’s Pairs champions in history.

North Beach shine in finalKaye Blackwell, Rinske Butcher and Ann Drayson (North Beach) are the 2015-2016 AERO Bowls Women’s Over 60’s State Triples Champions after defeating Maureen Beard, Jennifer Kite, Irene Arndt (Safety Bay) 22-6 in the final at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. The final was played in blustery conditions on a fast green.

While these conditions may seem difficult to many, for teams from North Beach and Safety Bay this would have seemed like a home away from home and the quality of the game showed they had no problems adjusting.Blackwell jumped out to a significant lead early and by the

10th end of the 18 end game she led 10-3. So while scoring multiples in one end was difficult for both teams Blackwell was doing enough to have the shot at the conclusion of most ends.A three on the 11th end was answered with a two and a

single to Beard to keep her team in it. However a run of three consecutive scoring ends to Blackwell put the North Beach triple eleven in front with only two ends to play. With the Safety Bay triple chasing numbers to stay in the

contest, Blackwell piled on the pressure and took a five on the 17th end to give them an insurmountable lead and the teams shook hands with one end remaining.

Perica triumphsin singles title

Sam Perica is the 2016 Over 60’s Men’s State Singles champion. Perica defeated Bruce Eagles in the final 21-18 at Osborne Park Bowling Club. The win gives Perica his first state title. Both players survived difficult semi final encounters

to make it into the final. Perica defeated 2013 winner Glynn Vaughan 21-17 to claim his spot in the final whilst Eagles defeated 2016 State Singles runner-up Gary Caffell in his game on Monday.Although due to start the final that afternoon the game

could not be played due to heavy rain so the players had to spend a night in anticipation. It was Perica who settled quickest of the two as he

quickly established a small lead. With consistency as his main weapon he consolidated that lead and halfway through the game held a 12-6 lead.Eagles steadied but couldn’t cut into the deficit as the

score reached 16-10.Then the game shifted entirely with Eagles taking

control. Winning eight of the next nine shots Eagles suddenly found himself with a 18-17 lead. With momentum on his side it looked like Eagles

would come up with a great comeback win to claim the title. But with everything going against him Perica showed

some grit and class playing a great end to draw four shots and take his maiden state title.

• The Western Australian team that competed in the Australian Side Series at Queanbeyan.

WA Womenwin silver in Australian Side Series

The Western Australian women’s team placed second at the Australian Side Series held at Queanbeyan as they completed a remarkable turnaround from a disappointing campaign in 2015. The campaign didn’t start particularly brightly for WA played

the reigning champions New South Wales. The Blues beat WA comfortably and it looked like lower-table obscurity might swallow Western Australia. However coach Therese Hastings says it was an easy game to move on from as winning wasn’t the be all and end all.“We really took the pressure off the game knowing we

weren’t likely to win,” Hastings said. The strength of that New South Wales side was shown as

they handed out a couple of beltings on their way to their fifth successive championship. In the next two games the WA girls got their confidence back

with hard fought wins over the ACT and Queensland. Those two wins proved to be crucial in setting them up for a strong week.“During the ACT win, coming from behind, I saw a bit of

spark in the distance,” Hastings explained.“But beating Queensland was a great result for us and gave

the girls real confidence, that’s when I really thought we could finish around the middle and anything else was a bonus.”Following up with wins over South Australia and Tasmania,

WA headed into their game against Victoria in good form and very confident, a win would guarantee them second place. The team was not overawed and put in a strong performance to beat the Vics to claim a silver medal behind the unbeaten NSW.The men had a more modest campaign but still were able to

show that they could compete at the level required. Although two wins was a disappointing return the side was in most of its matches for most of the game and just unable to get over the final hurdle. Their sixth place finish has WA in the same position as last year as the selectors, coaches and players continue to search for an answer that will lead to more wins. The men had a similarly poor start as the women with a

comfortable defeat at the hands of New South Wales.

Australian Sides Series Championships

Looking to rebound strongly WA started well against the ACT establishing a lead early. However the host state refused to be put away and came home strong to beat WA after trailing for much of the game.Day two looked much more promising for the Western

Australians as they responded to a bitterly disappointing first day with a strong win over Queensland. Having won the series just two years ago Queensland looked to be the scalp that might turn things for WA and lead to a good finish. Although unable to string together a second win WA stayed right with South Australia for most of the game. Although disappointed with the finish late in the day it was a much more promising performance on day two for the Men.A loss to Tasmania early on day three dashed any outside

hopes of a medal as the side struggled to get going. After being jumped in the first third of the game the deficit remained largely the same until the game’s conclusion as WA were again unable to take that extra step to get back in the hunt.

The competitive form continued against champions Victoria in the afternoon and the West were a chance to produce a massive upset. In the end they again found themselves that one jump away as Victoria finished strongly winning the match. With shackles off on the final day WA recorded a huge win over the Northern Territory moving them into sixth place. A shining light in the men’s side was debutant Lewis Grigg who took out the Eddy/Wishart Medal for player of the side series. Playing for Matt Ellul, Grigg led well to set up his rink for the entire series. The award caps off a promising start to the 24 year old Grigg’s state career which, given his age, may continue for many years. For the first time there were joint winners for the Beryl

Godfrey award as best player for the women’s team. Kristina Krstic capped off a fine twelve months winning her second Beryl Godfrey award in a row.

'Milestones achieved during the series werePieter Harris 200 games, Daniel Patterson

and Matt Ellul 50 games.'

Big year for Busselton teamsBusselton Bowling Club changed their history on Saturday when First Division Red won the South West league pennant flag. The first time all three first division teams have won in the same year. Mid week men and the women’s team secured their title

a few weeks earlier when they both won their respective pennants however it was the come from behind win by the weekend pennant boys that gave all the members even more reason to celebrate. Playing Collie for the second time in the finals proved to be

almost a carbon copy of the last game when all three teams were slow to start but powered home over the four hours of 25 ends it took to win the game. The standard of play by both teams was reflected in the

scores, when Jeff Mitchell, Peter Fancote, Wayne Coyle and Glen Tillotson were twelve all on the fifteenth end, as was the combination of Graham Evans, Scott Pennington, Jim Paganoni and Rolf Groenheide fourteen shots each on the sixteenth end. Struggling to hold onto their shots due to some great bowling by the Collie team, the boys on the other rink, Matthew Pennington, Gerry and Bill Gardiner & Don Rogers were down 10-22 on the fifteenth end. While the huge group of Busselton supporters chewed their

fingernails these four bowlers preceded to clinically turn their game around winning eight of the last ten ends with precision bowling sprinkled with a bit of luck as the Collie skip missed a few drives winning 28-25.The other two teams continued to match their opposition

with Mitchell’s team drawing 22 all and Evans' team winning 29/19. The leads and seconds were to be congratulated on their consistency and their ability to play what was asked of them, however it was the outstanding accuracy of the thirds and skippers who killed the end, moved the kitty or skilfully drew the shot when needed that excited the huge crowd watching the game.

Not since 1983/84 has the Busselton Women Bowlers first division side won the South West pennant flag. A thirty three year drought was reason for the twelve girls and their many supporters to shout like teenage rock fans when the last team to finish did the impossible and scored five shots on the last end to defeat long time rivals Capel by two shots.Jennie Bruce, Elizabeth Wilson, Joan Vigors and Karen

Gaglia started well and the five scored on the third end helped put them in a positive mode as they scored every second end until the fifteenth. From then on they played exceptional bowls to score on each end to win 22/16. Gail Botting, Nancy Gordon, Elizabeth Thomas and Sylvia Tillotson struggled initially scoring just six shots in eleven ends. The skip, Gail promptly then kicked the scoreboard and

magic happened. The girls scored six in three ends doubling their score. The closeness of the competition was more evident in their game when on many occasion they had shots in the head however the opposition repeatedly found ways to either move the kitty or wriggly in and take the shot. Botting’s team went down 14/24.With just one team to finish and all the spectators chewing

their fingernails the team of Judy Rice, Helen Paganoni, Jean Sawkins and Linda Burgin needed to score three to win for Busselton. Burgin and Sawkins, two young members new to first division, kept their nerve and produced outstanding shots close to the jack. This immediately put pressure on Capel players as all eyes were on them to perform. Paganoni and Rice continued to play defensive shots and neither were aware of their chance of winning the flag as they continued to concentrate on their own game. The Bunbury Club host for the finals erupted in a roar when

five finger were raised to end the game their total 23/17, the result giving Busselton the aggregate 59/57 and the flag. The unlucky Lyn Burrows who was lead for the Bruce team had played all year until the grand final however was there to celebrate the win.

Geraldton’s Michael Ford is the Men’s Country Week Singles champion after an outstanding display of bowling at the 2016 championships with the finals at Osborne Park Bowling Club.Starting in the very last section at Melville Bowling Club

of the 513 players and 171 section field Ford cut a swathe through the bottom half of the draw. 17-3 and 17-11 sectional wins were followed by knock-out round victories over T Cabassi (Gingin) 21-16, M Davis (Brookton) 21-13, B Manning (Moora) 21-16, A Cousins (Narembeen) 21-17 and N Hosking (Moodiarrup) 21-10. Ford was at his best in the quarter final with a very good

21-9 over John Fiegert (Condingup), however a tough semi final was to follow. Geoff Whyatt from Eaton had been in great form himself and made Ford work hard for every shot, Ford eventually gaining the upper hand late in the match to win 21-17. That set the stage for the final playing Cunderdin veteran Don Buegge. Buegge had been the surprise packet of the event, he had been playing exceptional bowls with wins against P Sheedy (Capel) 21-9, N Beech (Albany) 21-11 and B Baker (Dudley Park) 21-14 leading into the final.Buegge started the better in the final and led early however

once Ford hit his straps he really started to plaster bowls on the jack and gained ascendancy. Buegge was able to pick up the odd shot in he second half of the match but Ford’s consistency saw his scoring multiples on many ends before finally taking the championships 21-14. The ten consecutive singles win true testimony to the toughest of Ford to win his second Country week title following a Fours win back in 2008.

• Michael Ford from Geraldton – Men's Country Week Singles champion.

Wonthella’s Eddie Dodd (lead) and Geoff Halliday (skip) added more silverware to the trophy cabinet when they claimed the Men’s Country Week Pairs title at Osborne Park.It was the second title for Halliday having won a Fours

championship with Dodd, Preston and Melling in 2012. Dodd took his fourth title having won the singles in 2007 and also a Pairs in 2010.The Wonthella duo can only be described as outstanding

in their performances as they were rarely troubled in victory. Starting off in section 96 at Dalkeith-Nedlands they made short work of their section with 21-7, 19-10 and 16-7 victories. Recommencing knock out play at Victoria Park the change of venue mattered little as the Wonthella pair made short work of teams from Quairading, Newdegate and Kulin winning 18-5, 13-5 and 19-10 respectively.Into the last 16 at Osborne Park and both players were on

top of their game with another brilliant display knocking out former winner Mark Simpson (Dudley Park) 16-6.The quarter final proved to be the toughest encounter when

Rayner and Cliff from Brookton made them work harder for a 14-4 win.The semi final and finals however were just clinical displays

as both players showed exceptional draw power to out class some worthy opposition. A 17-4 semi final victory over Gearing and Chesson (Merredin) fore shadowed the final win being an impressive 18-6 victory over the very good Wagin duo of Warren Holt and Steve Davidson. The sum total of the scores by Halliday and Dodd over the

tournament was 171-70 with a stunning 101 shots more than their opponent’s testament to their quality play in the event.

• Toodyay Fours: Keith Strachan, Branko Andrijich, Eugene O'Sullivan and Ashley Grundy.

The Toodyay foursome of Eugene O’Sullivan, Ashley Grundy, Keith Strahan and Branko Andrijich are the Men’s Country Week Fours Champions. They are also the very first Country Week champions for Toodyay (both Men and Women) giving further reason for celebration.Starting the tournament at Victoria Park-Carlisle

they were probably not even expected to make it out of the section as they took on some good teams from Dudley Park, Kellerberrin, Merredin, Kukerin and Wonthella.A 26-2 opening round win proved a great

way to start the tournament and with three more wins sectional victory look assured. Playing the last match against the Wonthella side which included the eventual pairs winners Halliday and Dodd it was a near disaster for the Toodyay team losing heavily 23-5. The Wonthella team had suffered an earlier defeat so both sides finished equal on wins, luckily for Toodyay they got through narrowly with better shots up of +38 compared to Wonthella’s +34.

Toodyay shock rivals in Fours win The Toodyay team then put the last sectional round lost

behind them to win their first knock out match 22-11 against Ongerup. Play then moved to finals mode at Osborne Park and the side really hit their straps. Some big wins followed with

20-8 against a York team and 21-11 against a composite side skipped by J Komene moving them into the semi finals. In a tense close semi-final match they won it on

the last end overcoming a very good Brookton side of Hitsert, Davis, Bowring and Wilkinson 13-

12. The final proved to be the toughest challenge yet with a top class Eaton

side awaiting them. Mark Mills, Shaun Heasman, Geoff Whyatt

and Gordon Twist boosted plenty of bowls credentials

and coming into the final with an impressive 19-8 victory over Wongan Hills most thought they were the likely winners. No

one told the Toodyay boys however as they started

the final in brilliant fashion racing to an unassailable lead

very quickly. The Eaton team added some late scoreboard respectability with the final score line 18-10 however no one could deny the tremendous victory to Toodyay.

• Barbara Sullivan and Margaret Mance from Eaton after their Countryweek Pairs win.

Scaddan’s Patricia Stone entered the Women’s Countryweek Singles just because she was in the pairs and fours, so why not give it a go.By the end of the week Stone was the toast of Countryweek

winning the singles final against the highly decorated and three time countryweek singles winner, Lee Poletti (Geraldton) 21-8.It was in the Semi Final that Trish Stone showed her

commitment to winning the title both physically and mentally. After starting and finishing the quarter final under lights on Friday evening, Stone was on the green again at 9.30am on Saturday morning for her semi final match against Margaret River’s Lyn Colmer. It looked like Stone’s tournament was coming to an end when she was down 10-16 and only one shot away from elimination. However her persistence was rewarded when she came from the clouds to win the game 17-16.Lee Poletti in the 2nd semi final didn’t have it

her own way up against Chris Ace Watson from Boulder but stayed in control for a 17-12 win.The Final was a tale of two extremes with

Poletti in one corner being a former Australian Commonwealth Games representative and a winner of every major title in Western Australia and Stone in the other corner playing in her first major singles championship final. However from the outset it was Stone who found the conditions to her liking and was able to adjust to the line and pace of the green. Playing a predominately drawing game Stone raced to a 6-0 lead before Poletti had settled and continued to pull away no matter what Poletti threw at her. While many may have expected some nerves to come into play as Patricia Stone drew towards victory, it became obvious that she had complete focus on her game and unless Poletti could win some consecutive ends to put the pressure on, Stone was not going to crumble. The final end proved to be a near full

length end and again it was Stone who got to the jack first and second. A couple of running shots by Poletti disturbed the head but proved to not be enough with Stone taking the final shot required and completing a remarkable week to be the Women’s Countryweek Singles Champion.

Eaton has a rich history of producing winners in the Women’s Countryweek Pairs while York was looking for their first

winners of the event.Margaret Mance and Barbara

Sullivan (Eaton) went into the final full of confidence with a semi final win over perennial finals contenders Roma Dunn and Julie Lindsay (Dudley Park) 14-11. Sian Smith

and Lepe Tadman (York) went into the 2nd semi final against Margaret Silvester and Judy Wiese

(Mt Barker Golf) with some close wins in the previous rounds which stood them in good stead

with a consistent performance and a 15-9 win. With both teams playing the conditions well it was

a gripping final with neither team willing to give the other an opportunity.Eventually it was Margaret Mance and Barbara

Sullivan who came out on top 14-13 over a gallant Sian Smith and Lepe Tadman to take the 2016 Women’s Countryweek pairs Championship.

Dudley Park wina Fours thriller

When the game resumed in the morning the competition was just as fierce with an extra end needed to split the two teams. Finally a result was delivered with the Dunn quartet prevailing 13-12.The final saw last years

champion team of Dunn, Lindsay, Currie and Rogalski looking to defend their 2015 fours title while Bruce, Beswick, Wilson and Paganoni looking for their chance to take home their first fours title. With many good bowls being

played it was the defending champions who were destined to prevail and the combination of Roma Dunn, Julie Lindsay, Peg Currie and Jennie Rogalski put another Women’s Countryweek Fours trophy in the cabinet with a 15-9 victory over Jennifer Bruce, June Beswick, Elizabeth Wilson and Helen Paganoni.

The Women’s Countryweek Fours was a tight affair all round with both semi finals producing one shot winners. Jennifer Bruce, June Beswick, Elizabeth Wilson and Helen Paganoni (Busselton) were the first finalists when they outlasted Christine Rennie, Pat Belcher, Thelma Thompson and Kay Simmons (Composite) 12-11.The 2nd Semi Final between Lee Poletti, Jill Adam, Fay

Sudilowski and Julie McCabe (Geraldton) and Roma Dunn, Julie Lindsay, Peg Currie and Jennie Rogalski (Dudley Park) had all the drama after having to be delayed over night when a storm hit the Osborne Park Bowling Club with only nine ends of the game being completed.

The winners received a package of five nights accommodation in an Ocean Beach cottage at Hamelin Bay Holiday Resort valued at $950 along with $100 cash each. Co-sponsor this year was Whirlwind Olives, a local olive farm who not only contributed cash but also two generous and very popular raffle packages.Ninety six players representing clubs from all over

the South West provided some fierce competition whilst at the same time enjoying great camaraderie and lots of laughs.A new slant on the traditional ‘Spider’ to begin the

competition was the introduction of the ‘Firies Helmet’. A donation from participating players gave them the chance to ‘Hit the Helmet’. This bit of frivolity raised the amount of $30 for the current Fire Relief Fund. After a great day of bowls and a few refreshing drinks

the players enjoyed the ever popular entertainment once again brought to us from the Eaton Ladies. The crowd was enthralled when amongst the jungle vines these musicians performed the ‘Titarzan’ skit. This brought the house down and capped off a perfect day.Final competition winners were the Capel (Kerry

Scott, Margaret Savickis, Dawn Costello and Bev McKenna) followed by Binningup and Manjimup. All of these teams only lost one game each. This two day event has gained popularity over

the past five years and proof of this is the fact that nominations have already been received and confirmed for 2017 competition. Anyone wishing to nominate for next year would be well advised to be the early bird.– Dee Harrison – Augusta Bowling Club
