ESPEN Congress onClinical Nutrition & Metabolism

LEIPZIG, GERMANY

f Michael Fischer

Dear colleagues, On behalf of the Local Organising Committee and theGerman Society for Clinical Nutrition (DGEM) we would liketo invite you to the 35th ESPEN Congress 2013 held for thesecond time in Leipzig. Many of you may have alreadyparticipated at the 10th congress in Leipzig in 1988. Sincethen Europe has changed tremendously. 25 years on, we aregrateful to have the opportunity once again to host the ESPENCongress and to share with you this “wind of change”. The city of Leipzig in the former GDR was the origin of thepeaceful revolution in 1989, which was the beginning of“Freiheit” (freedom) and the reunification of Germany. Thishistorical background creates the theme for the congress:“Tearing down barriers – nutrition brings people together”. Youcan expect an interesting, broad and open mindedprogramme, offering both updated and cutting-edge science,as well as clinical practice. As a congress venue, Leipzig offers a lot: one of the mostmodern congress sites in Germany, a superb infrastructure, and all the charms of an adorable city in which you can enjoyyour leisure time. The city of Leipzig has a rich heritage in both music and theperforming arts. Names like Johann Sebastian Bach and FelixMendelssohn Bartholdy are inseparably linked to the city. The“Gewandhaus” Concert Hall is home to a world-class Orches-tra known for its excellence in classical music performances. In addition, one of the oldest and most famous GermanBoys`Choirs, the “Thomanerchor” of the St. Thomas Church, celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2012. Its most famouschoirmaster from 1723 to 1750 was none other than JohannSebastian Bach. The people of Leipzig will be delighted to welcomeparticipants from all over the world, to share and exchangeideas, and to make their guests feel at home.We hope to see you in Leipzig in 2013.

Leipzig is located in the East of Germany, in a low-lyingarea in the north-western part of Saxony by the rivers

Elster, Pleisse and Parthe. Its average altitude above sea-levelis 118 m. Leipzig currently has about 500,000 inhabitants. The city covers an area of 297.6 km2 and enjoys a generallyrelatively mild climate. The mean temperature in Leipzig inAugust/September is around 18 degrees Celsius.Leipzig is a traditional focus of traffic infrastructure. Havinggrown as a trade-fair and commercial centre at the crossroadsof two military and commercial routes, today more than everthe city focuses traffic routes from all directions. So there arenumerous ways of getting to Leipzig, including the Leipzig/Halleairport. Its schedule includes direct flights from/to big Europeancities such as London, Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Milanor Vienna as well as some long distances destinations. Visitors who come to Leipzig for a conference will hopefully beable to spend some leisurely hours and dive into the charmsand attractions of the host city: the unique flair, the wholevariety of things to do and to see: from the concert in theGewandhaus Concert Hall to a relaxed pub crawl in theevening. Visitors should not miss the architectural gems ofRenaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau, the openness andhospitality of Leipzig people. There are only few cities which have such a rich musicaltradition as Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach was the choir-master of St. Thomas Church from 1723 to 1750. The housewhere Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy died can be visited inLeipzig. The story of Robert and Clara Schumann is inse-parably linked with Leipzig, and Richard Wagner was born inthe city in 1813. Don’t miss such an opportunity to discoverthis brilliant city at the same time as the rich scientific andeducational programmes of the Congress.
