Inside this issue: That was then, this is now

It was such a great pleasure for us to hear the news that Ysgol Rhosnesni is no

longer required by Estyn to be in the category of Special Measures. The school has

worked hard together with the extended community to ensure that Ysgol Rhosnesni

is once again the school of choice in the local community. Staff, students, parents

and Governors have worked tirelessly to demonstrate how successful we can be

when we work in partnership to achieve a positive outcome. The local press have

described our school as a ‘resurgent school’ and as we look back as well as

forward, we are proud of the good practice taking place here and we will continue to

improve further and achieve our aim of being an excellent school. It is very positive

to report that Estyn have observed good behaviour, improved attendance, positive

attitudes to learning, improved teaching and learning and a safer school

environment. As we move forward, I am grateful for your ongoing support which is

It was great to see so many smiles on the

faces of former Year 11 Rhosnesni

students. The atmosphere was very

nostalgic as students received their GCSE

certificates. It was lovely to see them catch

up with their former class mates, Form

Tutors and Progress Manager. The

evening was alive with conversation about

what students are doing now and what they

have moved on to.

All of their hard work paid off in the summer

and they were very happy to look back on

their time at the school with fond memories.

The teaching staff were also proud of the

achievements of their former students and

were delighted to hear that they have

started to make positive steps forward to

carve out a happy and successful future.

Year 11 GCSE Certificate Evening

Many thanks to James Cleverley Head Boy and Seren Edwards Head Girl for this

recollection of the evening.

Former students’ feedback:

“A wide range of GCSE options were made available to me. Without the helpfulness of my

teachers, I would never have achieved the grades I have.” Gabi Ecclestone.

“I was involved in the Eco Committee and Peer Mentoring Programme during my time at

Rhosnesni. The Prom was outstanding.” Frazer Tierney.

“I enjoyed being on the School Council and representing the students as Deputy Head Girl. I

loved the trips to France and had the best Form Tutor and Head of Year.” Courtney

Williams.

On 7th-8th January, 2016 Year 7 visited Glan Llyn. The group of 20 students were led by Mrs Hughes with Mr Whitehead, Miss Parry and Hannah Wright from the Urdd. Over the 2 days the students took part in a ropes course, canoeing, climbing course, raft building, a walking trip in Bala, bowling, bingo, archery and a disco.

Year 7 Visit To Glan Llyn

All instructors at the Glan Llyn Centre can speak Welsh and they were talking bilingually to the students during each activity. This allowed the students to practise their Welsh speaking skills during the activities. The students were complemented on their excellent behaviour and got involved in all of the activities on offer.

One student commented, "I have enjoyed my experience at Glan Llyn doing all of the different activities! My favourite activity was the ropes course. I have also been able to practice my Welsh speaking skills".

Holocaust Memorial Event 2016

On Wednesday 27th January, a group of

Year 11 students attended the Holocaust

Memorial Event at Coleg Cambria. The

theme of Holocaust Memorial 2016 was

‘Don’t Stand By’ and the day consisted of

various exhibitions and presentations by

well-known dignitaries which included Rev

Dr Jason Bray (Vicar of St. Giles), Wanjiku

Mbugua (Chief Officer of BAWSO), the

Mayor of Wrexham County Borough Council

Cllr Barbara Roxburgh and the High Sheriff

of Clwyd Janet P. Evans.

Pupils also had the opportunity to meet Mr

Peter Fuller from Mold, North Wales who

has received the ‘Pride of Britain’ award for

bravery. In January 2014, ex-soldier Peter

Fuller intervened and placed his own life on

the line to save dentist Dr Sarandev Singh

Bhambra during a racially motivated attack

with a machete and a hammer at the

Tescos store in Mold.

“I expected a service filled with looking back at the horrors of one the darkest hours of humanity. However, I was shocked by the horrifying stories of people facing persecution at this very moment.” James Cleverly 11H1

Pupils were astounded by the tremendous

courage and bravery shown by Mr Peter

Fuller. Pictured below, are our Year 11

Touring Theatre Company Visits Rhosnesni High

Earlier this month a professional

theatre company performed the play

“Scattered” for our Year 7 students in

the main school hall. This highly

acclaimed production tells the story of

when two worlds collide, as two

teenage boys, Owen and Yasser,

have a chance meeting at an

abandoned allotment in the summer

holidays.

This was an original piece of theatre

which was thought provoking,

engendered debate and aimed to

confront stereotypes surrounding

asylum seekers and refugees. The

students were totally enthralled by

this performance and we do hope the

company will join us again in the near

future. Many thanks to Mrs Topliss

for organising this excellent

opportunity for our Year 7 students.

Rhosnesni Geography Department watches

Manchester City vs. Everton at the Etihad Stadium

The Geography Department have been

successfully running a number of reward

trips in recognition of those pupils who

have been working very hard in

Geography. The department acknowledges

the high efforts that pupils place within the

subject area and felt that after a very busy

term it was time for the reward.

Earlier this term, a total of 22 pupils were

selected to go and watch a League Cup

Semi-Final football match between

Manchester City and Everton.

All of our pupils were a credit to the school

and for some pupils this was the first big

game they have ever seen.

Sam Ridgeway, a pupil of Rhosnesni

stated, ‘I couldn’t believe how good the

seats were, it was an excellent game’.

Kyle Reid, a pupil of Rhosnesni stated,

‘The game was brilliant, I was able to see

some world class players. I’m now working

harder than ever in Geography so that I

can be selected for the next trip’.

Year 11 Mock Interview Day

On Friday 29th January 2016 Year 11 pupils took part in the annual Mock Interview Day. Pupils in Year 11 have been preparing for several weeks to produce their CV’s which formed the basis of an interview with a member of the business community. 135 Year 11 pupils were interviewed by 23 visitors, 15 from the Erddig Rotary Club and the following members of the business community: Christine Willis- ITEC Lee Richardson - ITEC Sharon Klaces -HMRC Charles Rayment - HMRC Nikki Hughes -HMRC Joy Brerton- Glyndwr University

Sue Hulme- Coleg Cambria Phil Hill - British Army

The visiting members of the business

community were extremely complimentary

about the way the pupils had prepared,

conducted themselves, and the way they

presented themselves at interview. The

pupils were also very positive about the

interview experience and felt it helped them

a great deal in preparing for college and job

interviews.

Science Report

Separate Science - Physics workshop with Techniquest.

In September, the Year 10 Separate Science group undertook a workshop run by Techniquest.

The workshop consisted of real life tasks applying

Physics and Chemistry to an energy supply

problem. The tasks ranged from environmental

issues to energy and gas pressure calculations. As

always Rhosnesni pupils provided a positive image

and greatly impressed the Techinquest staff with

their team work and lateral thinking, in particular

applying new knowledge in a practical problem.

The Separate Science group chose this option

which will allow them to gain three GCSE's in,

Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A popular option,

the three separate GCSE's provide a head start to any pupil

considering an A Level Science course and many have gone on to study

Science at top universities. Former pupils are currently applying for degree courses in Chemistry,

Physics and even Astrophysics at Manchester with Dr Brian Cox.

Surprising Science with Year 7

In the penultimate week of the Christmas term, Year 7 took part in a Science workshop with Dr

Matt Pritchard. Dr Pritchard used magic tricks and illusions to teach analytical skills and logical

thinking. The demonstrations were both entertaining and thought provoking, providing pupils with

tricks and illusions to try on friends and relatives. Pupils were totally enthralled and often baffled by

his displays, including the Headteacher, Mr Harrison! Dr Pritchard was previously employed by the

Science Museum before embarking on his new career. Dr Pritchard later contacted Rhosnesni to

say how impressed he had been with the pupils’ enthusiasm, participation and standard of answers

and solutions to the problems presented.

After School Science Club

Year 7 students have had the opportunity to join an after school Science Club which gives them the

chance to witness and take part in practical Science which they might otherwise not get the chance

to experience. They were welcomed with fire writing, witnessed an explosion in a custard factory

and used the principles of melting and freezing to make wax landscapes! They have also

registered to complete a Bronze Crest Award which they are in the research stages of and after

Easter have been accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society to take part in a nationwide

experiment growing seeds which are currently on the International Space Station with British

astronaut Tim Peake.

18 of our Year 8 pupils have taken part in

the Just Be Smoking Prevention

Programme this half-term run by Public

Health Wales and they have now completed

their training and are smoke free

ambassadors for our school. They have

given 100% effort and commitment and they

are a credit to their year group.

The programme aims to reduce the rates of

regular smokers amongst young people. It

is a peer led programme which addresses

the influence of peer pressure and

friendship ties on the uptake of regular

smoking.

Mrs E. Topliss

The students were selected through a peer

questionnaire and were found to be

influential and respected students in Year 8.

They attended a two day training course in

Alyn Waters and have since been getting

into their roles having informed

conversations with their peers in Year 8

around the risks of smoking and the benefits

of being smoke free.

The pupils have also participated in three

follow up sessions back in school to support

them in their new roles. We hope they will

continue to be influential in giving out these

smoke free messages to their year group.

Imagine the scene: 30 boys assembled in

the Drama Studio, singing in perfect

harmony. This was exactly what happened

when the ‘Only Boys Aloud’ director, Huw,

kindly ran an exciting workshop session in

Welsh rhymes and putting actions to music.

The innovative teaching style involved,

The choirs have been extremely successful
