Wat is symmetrie?
• X is symmetrisch als X invariant is onder een bepaalde transformatie.
• Ruimtelijke symmetrieën:
– Translatie– Rotatie– Spiegeling (reflectie, pariteit)

Symmetrie van natuurwetten
• Natuurwet (theorie) heeft bepaalde symmetrie als zij geldig blijft onder bepaalde transformatie, bv:
– Translatie in de ruimte
– Rotatie in de ruimte
– Translatie in de tijd
• Wet heeft tenminste één symmetrie, anders is het geen wet.
Zoektocht naar symmetrie
• Relativiteitstheorie
• Deeltjesfysica: ‘interne’ symmetrie.
• Antimaterie: C-symmetrie (charge conjugation) tussen deeltje en antideeltje:
– Elektron-positron (1932)– Proton-antiproton (1955)– Neutron-antineutron (1956)
CP Invariantie
Schending van reflectie-symmetrie (pariteit) gevonden in 1956.
Gecombineerde CP- symmetrie bleek wel behouden.

Schending CP-invariantie
1956: CP-symmetrie tussen deeltjes en anti-deeltjes.
1964: CP-symmetrie geschonden bij verval K-mesonen (in ca. 0,2 % van gevallen).
Big Bang: iets meer materie dan antimaterie

Esthetiek in wetenschap: een kwestie van smaak?
• Subjectieve esthetiek vs. objectieve wetenschap
• Empirisme vs. rationalisme
– Moderne wetenschap is empiristisch: baseer kennis op onbevooroordeelde waarneming en experiment.
– Dirac rationalistisch …?
• Doel van wetenschap: waarheid, niet schoonheid

• Esthetische oordelen zijn subjectief, maar wetenschappers die erop vertrouwen zijn niet irrationeel.
• Schoonheid is geen indicator voor waarheid maar (soms) wel voor empirisch succes.
