The Book of Kells

Page 16: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

WHAT IS THE BOOK OF KELLS? The Book of Kells

(Trinity College Dublin MS 58) contains the four Gospels in Latin

The book is written on vellum (prepared calfskin) in a script known as "insular majuscule"

Page 17: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

ORIGINS…

Probably came from the scriptorium of Iona, an island off western coast of Scotland, but some claim it came from Northumbria or in Pictland in eastern Scotland

Page 18: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

ORIGINS…

St. Colum Cille founded a monastery around 561 on Iona

Page 19: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

ORIGINS

This monastery became the principal house of a large monastic confederation

ORIGINS… In 806: Vikings

raided the monastery

68 members of the community were killed

The monks took refuge in a new monastery at Kells, County Meath, Ireland

Page 25: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

ORIGINS…

Around the year 800 the Book of Kells was written

Scholars don’t know if the book was produced wholly at Iona or at Kells, or partially at each location

At Matthew’s Gospel chapter 46, Judas’ arrival with a mob to arrest Jesus, and subsequently to betray him with a kiss, is prefaced in the letter 'A' of 'Adhuc‘’

Lions represent both figures, Judas on the left aggressively biting the more passive figure of Jesus

DETAIL

HOW MANY ARTISTS?

There seem to be three major artists

Four major scribes

Page 37: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

HOW DID IT WORK?

One scribe responsible only for text

He would leave the decoration of letters at the beginning of verses to an artist

Page 38: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

HOW DID IT WORK? The last scribe

tended to use bright colors - red, purple, yellow - for the text, and to fill blank spaces with the unnecessary repetition of certain passages

Page 39: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

THE COLORS

Orpiment (yellow arsenic sulphide) produced a vibrant yellow

Red probably came from red lead

A copper green, reacting with damp, perforated the vellum in places

Page 40: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

HOW WAS THE BOOK USED?The number of errors in the text and its fanciness suggest it was used for ceremonial occasions but not for everyday Mass

Page 41: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

HISTORY OF THE BOOK

It was stolen in 1006 and recovered

It remained at Kells throughout the Middle Ages

Dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII

Page 42: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

HISTORY OF THE BOOK

Around 1653 the book was sent to Dublin by the governor of Kells for safekeeping

A few years later it reached Trinity College, Dublin

Page 43: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

TODAY

It’s been on display in the Old Library at Trinity College from the mid-19th century

Attracts in excess of 500,000 visitors a year

Page 44: IRELAND Second Parent/Student Meeting April 15, 2014.

TODAY

Since 1953 it has been bound in four volumes

Two volumes can normally be seen, one opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script
