Flame retardant is one method of protecting people's lives and properties from fire. Currently the number of fires in Japan is in the past 5 years, about 64,000 cases, approximately 2,000 people for the victims. Also, most of them are elderly people and infants, and the victims are biased toward the socially vulnerable. As one means of solving, by developing advanced flame retardant materials, the goal is to secure the time to escape from the fire and to protect the people's lives and wealth from fires.

国民の生命と財産を火災から保護する方法の一つに、難燃化という手法がある。   現在年間の火災件数は日本だけで過去5年平均で、約6万4千件、犠牲者は約2千人(3.11震災を除く)。その大半がお年寄りと幼児であり、犠牲者は社会的弱者に偏る。解決手段の一つとして、高度な難燃材料を開発することにより、火災から逃げる時間を確保し、国民の生命と財産を火災から保護するのが目的となる。

Flame retardant technology is aimed at securing time to escape from the fire by developing advanced flame retardant materials and protecting public life and property from fire. The flame retardant has the following problems. Standard issue There is no definition of "flame retardant level“ in world wide , so there are many flame retardant standards for each application. Besides, it differs among the world countries. At present, the movements of global standardization are gradually beginning, but the claims of each country are also different. The situation is chaotic.

Environmental issues A flame retardant having a large addition amount to the resin tends to be regulated as with the plasticizer. Waves of regulation that started with specific bromine flame retardants such as RoHs Directive and Environmental Label have also spread to phosphorus flame retardants. Technical problems Flame retardants are required to balance environmental performance and flame retardant effect. That is, both efficiency and effect are required. For example, alternatives for improving the environmental performance of a combination system with a brominated flame retardant / antimony oxide having the highest flame retardant effect have been sought. It is nearing the time to consider seriously the balance between environmental performance and flame retardant effect.
