FINAL ADJUSTMENTSRADIO ADJUSTMENTSUse the following steps to make the final ad-justments on your car.1. Turn the transmitter on.2. Make sure the motor is disconnected.3. Connect your battery pack and turn thepower switch on.4. Move the steering control on the transmitterto the right and left. Do the wheels move in thecorrect direction? If not, you must reverse thesteering servo direction on your transmitter (seeradio manual.)5. Adjust your steering trim (see radio manual)until the #9659 steering rack is centered un-der the top plate. Then, using the two steering

turnbuckles, adjust the front wheels so theyare pointing straight ahead.6. Adjust the ESC (electronic speed control)according to the speed control manufacturersinstructions. Some manufacturers have themotor connected during adjustment and somedo not. Now turn the power switch off.7. Connect the motor. Place your car on a blockor car stand so that all four wheels are elevated.Turn the power switch on again. Check the ESCand steering settings you have made and thenturn the power switch back off.8. Remember this! The transmitter is alwaysthe FIRST TO BE TURNED ON and THELAST TURNED OFF.

Make these adjustments before you drive the truck

MOTOR GEARINGTo get the most from your motor, proper gear-ing is important. The gear ratios listed in thechart are recommended starting gear ratios.Ratios can vary from track to track, but youshould not change the pinion size more thanone tooth from the recommended ratio.

MAINTENANCE Follow these steps to keep your truck in shape for racing

CHECK FOR FITYou should periodically check all the movingparts: front and rear end, suspension arms, steering blocks, steering linkage, shocks, andso on. If any of these should get dirty or bindthen your cars performance will suffer.

MOTOR MAINTENANCEBetween runs, inspect the brushes to ensurethey are moving freely in the brush holder. Thisis done by carefully removing the spring andsliding the brush in and out of the holder. If thereis any resistance or rough spots, remove the

brush and carefully wipe the brush clean. Thiswill clean off any buildup so the brush slidessmoothly in the brush holder.

After every 3 to 5 runs, remove the brushesfrom the holders and inspect the tips for wearand/or burning. If there is a noticeable amountof wear, replace the brush with a new pair. Ifthe tip is a burnt blue color, then the lubricantin the brush has been burned away and newbrushes should be installed.

After every other battery charge you shouldcarefully clean the motor. One recommended

method is to spray motor cleaner directly onthe brush and commutator area. Run the mo-tor for approximately 15 seconds. Disconnectthe motor and spray it again, making sure therunoff is clear and clean. If the runoff is still dirty, repeat the spraying action until clean. After com-pleting the cleaning, apply a small amount oflightweight oil to each bushing or bearing forlubrication. Be careful not to apply too muchoil, for this will pick up dirt and contaminate thecommutator and brushes.

ASSEMBLE BATTERY PACKIf you are not using a stick battery pack, here ishow to assemble your battery pack. Solder in-dividual cell connections as shown.

Team racers prefer battery bars for stur-dier connections. Insulated wire will not allowthe pack to fit in the battery slot. Solder connections with battery bars

(#651)

DIFFERENTIALAdjust the differential (diff) as noted on page6. Adjusting the diff is not meant to be a tuningoption. If you can hear the diff making a bark-ing or chirping sound on jump landings, ei-ther your diff is set too loose or your slipperclutch is set too tight. First check your slippersetting, then re-set the diff according to the in-structions on step C-9.

SLIPPER CLUTCHThe assembly instructions give you a basesetting for your clutch. Turn the nut on theshaft so that the end of the top shaft is evenwith the outside of the nut. Tighten the nut 3more turns. At the track, tighten or loosen thenut in 1/8 turn increments until you hear a

faint slipping sound for 1-2 feet on takeoffs.Another popular way to set the clutch is

to hold both rear tires firmly in place andapply short bursts of throttle. If the clutch isproperly set, the front tires should lift slightlyup off the surface.

Aim negative lead toward the front

CAUTION! Increasing thepinion size by more than one toothcan damage your motor from ex-cess heat.

Testing camber with thecamber gauge

Raise or lowerthe ball end byadding orsubtractingwashers here

STEERING BLOCKSThe included trailing steering blocks (#9581)should be used in most cases. The Team es-pecially recommends the trailing blocks on high-grip or blue-groove.

Changing to the optional inline steeringblocks (#9577) and axles (#7459) will give thecar an overall aggressive feeling. Steering en-tering and exiting the corners is increased, butstraight line stability is reduced.

TUNING & SETUP TIPS These steps prepare your buggy for maximum performance

CASTERCaster describes the angle of the kingpin as itleans toward the rear of the vehicle. Positivecaster means the kingpin learns rearward at thetop.

The supplied 25° caster blocks (#9580) arerecommended in most cases. For more cornerentry steering and less exit steering, try theoptional 30° blocks (#9593).

The optional 20° blocks (#9592) will giveyou more exit steering and less entry steering.

FRONT CAMBER LINKSChanging the length of the camber link isconsidered a bigger step than adjusting theball end height on the tower. Shortening thecamber link (or lowering the ball end) will givethe front end less roll and quicken steeringresponse. Lengthening the camber link (orraising the ball end) will give the front moreroll and slower steering response.

Longer camber links are typically usedon high grip tracks and shorter links tend towork better on medium-grip loose tracks.

Raise or lower the ballend by adding or subtract-ing washers here

CAMBERCamber describes the angle at which the tireand wheel rides when looked at from the front.Negative camber means that the tire leans in-ward at the top.

A good starting camber setting is 1°. Usethe included #1719 camber gauge to set yourcamber as shown. Positive camber, where thetop of the tire is leaning out, is not recom-mended.

FRONT TOE-INToe-in describes the angle of the front tireswhen viewed from the top. With toe-in, the frontof the tires point inward.

Zero degree toe-in (tires pointing straightforward) is the setting that should be used inalmost all track conditions. Occasionally youcan increase turn in by adding a little toe-out(front of tires point slightly out). Front toe-in isnot a typical tuning adjustment used by theTeam.

FRONT RIDE HEIGHTRide height is the distance from the ground tothe bottom of the chassis.

The standard front ride height setting iswith the front arms level (referred to as armslevel). Check the ride height by lifting up theentire car about 8-12 inches off the bench anddrop it. After the suspension settles into place, add or remove pre-load clips so that the left &right arms appear to be flat as seen in the fol-lowing picture.

ANTI-SQUATAnti-squat denotes the angle of the rear armsrelative to the ground. Zero anti-squat meansthat the rear arms are flat, parallel with theground. The kit setting is 2°, and can be ad-justed by installing or removing the included

REAR CAMBER LINKChanging the length of the camber link is con-sidered a bigger step than adjusting the ballend height on the rear chassis brace. Shorten-ing the camber link (or lowering the ball end)will give the rear end less roll and the car willtend to accelerate or square up better. Length-ening the camber link (or raising the ball end)will give the rear more roll and more corneringgrip. Longer camber links are typically used onhigh grip tracks, while shorter links tend to workbetter on med-grip loose tracks. The kit settingis the best compromise of cornering grip andacceleration.

Upper shim (with one tab), 1°Lower shim (with two tabs), 2°

shims underneath the arm mount. The shim with 2 tabs is for 2° and the shim

with 1 tab is for 1°. You can use any combina-tion of shims to get 0, 1, 2, or 3° anti-squat.Adding anti-squat tends to make the car ro-tate more in corners, but doesnt handle aswell through the bumps.

REAR CAMBERCamber describes the angle at which the tireand wheel rides when looked at from the back.Negative camber means that the tire leans in-ward at the top.

A good starting camber setting is 1°. Usethe included #1719 camber gauge to set yourcamber (shown above). Adding a small amountof positive camber, where the top of the tire isleaning out, will tend to improve straight-lineacceleration on loose tracks.

Front arms should be in astraight line when ride heightis set as arms level

ANTI-ROLL BARThe optional #9635 B4/T4 rear anti-roll bar kit(also called the swaybar) allows you to addroll resistance to the rear end with minimal ef-fect on handling over bumps and jumps. It isan especially helpful tuning item on high-griptracks (try the gold bar). The silver and blackanti-roll bars are typically used on medium-griploose tracks.

REAR RIDE HEIGHTRide height is the distance from the ground tothe bottom of the chassis.

The rear ride height setting you should usemost often is with the outdrive, driveshaft, andaxles all on the same imaginary horizontal line(referred to as bones level). Check the rideheight by lifting up the entire car about 8-12inches off the bench and dropping it. After thesuspension settles into place, add or removepre-load clips so that the left & right driveshaftsappear to be flat as seen in the following pic-ture.

BATTERY PLACEMENTThis is one of the best adjustments on the car,and it can have the biggest effect on handling. Most of the time, moving the battery pack backwill yield more rear traction and decrease steer-ing. Conversely, moving the battery pack for-ward will yield less rear traction and increasesteering. But in some cases on extremely highgrip or extremely low grip tracks, moving thepack forward will make the car feel more bal-anced and actually improve rear grip.
