Welcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine (previously the Chingford Directory), the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.

It’s that time of the year again, when frankly I’m just too busy to give you the attention you deserve, and you’ll have to put up with my specially designed DIY round-robin. Just pick the answer that is most suitable.

Dear reader/cousin/bank manager. I hope this letter finds you well/recovering/in Belgium. It’s been a long/bright/embarrassing year/afternoon/therapy session. It was great to see you/daylight/the ballet, and I hope it won’t be too long before we do it again/sue one another/get married.

The twins/dog/house is/are fine/rabid/subsiding, but my wife/lawnmower/car is due an MOT/ well/full of clippings.

I love a ruined castle. And I also love steam engines. But the best thing of all is a steam engine that takes you

to a ruined castle. By sheer chance, this is what you can do from Swanage. Fancy that.

The Swanage Railway runs through 6 miles of Dorset countryside, chugging past fields and cottages, steaming through copses, over bridges, under bridges, beside streams and roads, twisting and turning and blowing its whistle to its terminus at Norden.

British Rail closed the original line in 1972. They sold off much of the land and had plans to demolish some of the bridges. The track that curves around the village of Corfe Castle was to be turned into a road. The station at Swanage

was earmarked for a shopping centre. But, in 1975, the local council gave the group called the Swanage Railway Society the lease to the old station, and the hard work began. In 1979, the first train ran a few hundred yards on the re-laid track. Then, like a benign worm crawling slowly across the fields and copses, the railway stretched back inland, finally reaching Norden in the 1990s.

I love steam engines – the sight of them, the sound of them, even the very smell of them. If you catch a train from Swanage to Corfe Castle, you can explore the restored station, admire the locomotive that will pull you away, with the reassurance that this is absolutely not anorak behaviour. You’re taking an aesthetic interest in industrial archaeology. Not anoraks at all. Honest.

(We were lucky enough to get the BR 2-6-4T Class 4MT. Bet you’re feeling jealous now, aren’t you? And there’s nothing anorakky about that either – everybody loves the BR 2-6-4T.)

You settle in your carriage, which rattles along to that soothing chug-chug as plumes of smoke drift back from the engine like wreaths across the scenery. To the south, the high ridge of Purbeck hills that runs parallel offers a tempting way back to Swanage for the energetic.

Corfe Castle itself is run by the National Trust, a collection of broken towers that jut like jagged teeth above the rooves of the cottages in the village. There has been some sort of castle on this spot, guarding the marble quarries of Purbeck, since Roman times. William the Conqueror rebuilt the fort in stone in the latter half of the 11th Century. Explore the ruins by rough paths that climb up amongst the fallen towers to get to a view over the village and back down the valley to Swanage. This is also officially not at all anorak behaviour. You’re taking a historic interest in Norman architecture.

You can walk back to Swanage along the beautiful Purbeck Ridge. To the left are views of Poole Harbour with yachts dotted across the water around Brownsea Island. To the right lies the line of the track, as another train chuffs along with its wake of smoke against the trees. Ahead, in a natural bowl of land, is the seaside town of

Swanage. But the best bit is the view that opens up behind you as you climb, of Corfe Castle on its hill. This gives you an excuse to stop every now and then, admire the view, and make out that you aren’t in the least bit puffed.

It’s a popular path, but one, nonetheless, with a feeling of solitude, history and nature. But you might want to wear an anorak after all, as it can be a bit nippy up there.

Always walk dogs on a lead near water dur-ing periods of low temperatures. Ice does not always freeze evenly leaving weak spots in what may appear a solid surface, plus snow will mask the water’s edge.

Float a large ball in your pond so if the water freezes you can remove it and ensure your fish get enough oxygen.

Dog coats are readily available in a wide vari-ety of sizes, colours, styles and prices. This can make a dog that becomes resistant to being walked in the cold, enthusiastic once again.

Owners of mice, guinea pigs, rats etc... as well as both indoor and outdoors birds (inc chickens), should consider covering cages/coops with a warm blanket over night to retain heat.

Reflective/LED collars and accessories are

also readily available and can provide peace of mind when walking dogs off the lead in poorly lit areas or for locating the family cat that does not want to come in at night.

Increase ambient temperature in reptile tanks, or move away from windows and doors.

Outside guinea pigs should be moved in-doors and you may want to consider moving outside rabbits into sheds/garages.

Always increase the amount of hay in your rabbits bedding area during winter.

Grit can cause contact allergies and illness if consumed, so bathe paws or protect them using paw covers/boots if this is a problem in your area.

Keep antifreeze well out of your pets reach as it tastes delicious to them, but is deadly.

Haven House has just received a legacy from the estate of Betty and Lawrie Shadbolt, a local couple who owned the eponymous timber merchants in Chingford for many years. The hospice will be using the windfall to help to fund services in its new Holistic Care Centre; activities such as therapeutic yoga, music therapy and parent training services, which will benefit life-limited children and families.

Speaking about the legacy, Richard Roberts, the couple’s nephew and executor said; ‘My aunt Betty and my late uncle Lawrie, left a considerable amount of money to various charities and we’re delighted that their legacy will benefit Haven House and its work with life-limited children and families.’

He continues; ‘Shadbolt was a well-known and successful local company and it seems fitting that it should continue to support the local community.’

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice added; ‘Legacies like the Shadbolt’s are crucial to the survival of smaller charities such as ours and allow us to plan for the longer-term. We urge all local business people and individuals to consider Haven House when considering a charitable gift in their Will.’
