    Day TodayB Y P E T E R V I D A L

TAURUS (APR21 - MAY 21)Your planets really can't decide whatthey're doing or where they're going,

which makes your astrologer's job even moredifficult than usual. Let's just accept that yourstars are generally confident, and that youshould finish the day odds-on.

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)It's because you had the good fortuneto be born a Gemini that you have the

right to change your mind as often as youwish. As from this month a whole range ofdecisions and choices are plunged into themelting pot, much to partners' annoyance. But that's their problem!

CANCER ( JUNE 22 - JULY 23)Go over all financial commitmentswith a fine toothcomb, and try tospot the deliberate error! This is ad-

vice, by the way, which you must follow up toat least well into the next month. Another con-sideration is that romantic expenses are set tospiral.

LEO (JULY 24 - AUG 23)Certain old ideas, proposals orsuggestions are now due to re-ceive a new lease of life. But yourbiggest weakness over the next

two weeks could be complacency, and if awondrous opportunity should float past, youmust grab it firmly with both hands.

VIRGO (AUG 24 - SEP 23)You've got to do what's expected ofyou without sacrificing your own in-terests. The trick is to perform your

daily responsibilities with your usual skill, butavoid being sucked into a mind-numbing rou-tine. There will be a host of little ways in whichyou can amuse yourself while keeping the au-thorities happy.

LIBRA (SEP 24 - OCT 23)Mars is playing a double game, en-couraging you to go behind otherpeople's backs now, but planning tobring everything into the open verysoon. This should surely be suffi-

cient to encourage you to behave according toonly the highest standards.

SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 22)Your romantic predilections andaspirations are already showing ashift back towards pride and van-

ity, just for a short period. Thismeans that you will expect partners to havesufficient achievements to justify your beingseen with them in public.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23 - DEC22)The best that you can hope for fromseveral of your current stars is alarge windfall, the least is the

promise of financial reward some time in theindefinite future. The one qualification is thatyou must rely on your own efforts: luck does-n't come into it.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 23 - JAN.20)Your adventurous energies maysoon have to be put on ice, but aslong as time is on your side you may

press ahead with travel plans and improve-ments to your personal life. However, one wayor another, you should check that there isnothing amiss as soon as possible.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 21- FEB. 19)You are about to find that close part-ners or spouses, can be terribly an-noying. It now looks as if someone is

about to go back on their word, but the twist isthat this time they're likely to be on your side!Hopefully their support will be good for you!

PISCES (FEB. 20 - MAR 20)You sometimes tend to forget justhow important it is to remain physi-cally fit. Hopefully you will now re-turn to a diet or exercise regime that

was abandoned, perhaps before you evenstarted! Some of you may be even tackling anew competitive sport.

Jaipur Pink Panthers Tsai Wei Yang is not only Taiwans first-ever pro kabaddiplayer, hes also doing a PhD in the sport that he only took up 5 years ago

    SHAHID JUDGE

    SEPTEMBER 1

TILL 2009, Tsai Wei Yangenjoyed spending most ofhis time on the basketball

court. That is until a chance meet-ing with Huang Chung Jeng tookhim to a different sort of courtone that was as alien as it was pe-culiar.

Jeng had just returned from In-dia, a trip that had introduced thefuture president of the TaiwanKabaddi Federation (TKF) to theindigenous sport. And when hedecided to carry the sport backhome and spread it in his home-land, Yang and his collegemateswere the first batch of inquisitiveyoungsters that he started with.Five years on, it is Yang's turn tobe in India. And over the last hec-tic month or so, the 25-year-oldhas not only been in the midst of adramatic kabaddi revolution, hehas been an intergral part of it.That is while spending a majorityof his time on the sidelines, doinga PhD in a sport that he had noteven heard of just five years ago.

For good measure, Yang was amember of the Jaipur Pink Pan-thers outfit, the first-ever Pro-Kabaddi League (PKL) champi-ons. His contribution on the courtmight have been limited to a fewminutes during the Panthers'semifinal clash against Patna Pi-rates. But that has only meantmore time on the sidelines to pre-pare his thesis on kabaddi.

Teammates and friends knowthe Taiwan international asDavid, a name he adopted as aboarding school student in Belize. And seeing Yang sit in rapt atten-tion, soaking and noting downevery intricate aspect of thekabaddi action, his colleagues atthe Jaipur franchise would oftenjoke that he was only short of car-rying a notebook to matches.

They used to say that carryinga notebook would make me a 'truestudent' of the game, he says, laughing.

The learning experience thathes gained from the PKL over thelast few weeks has been far fromwhat was on offer back home.Only last year, Yang was handingout questionnaires to variouskabaddi circles in Taiwan togather their perception of thesport. The two-year doctoratecourse from the University ofTaipei now though even containsfive minutes worth of first-handexperience. All five of those min-utes coming against the Pirates atthe National Sports Club of Indiain Mumbai. Having to spend a lotof time warming the bench hasn'tdampened his spirits one bit, how-ever.

I am learning for the PhD andto get better at the game. But atthe same time the best playersstart. This is a competition at theend of the day, he says.

Benefits of learning from thetournament are three-fold, Yang

explains. Academic and individualskill development is joined bylearning to get better at coaching,so that he is in a better shape tomould the Taipei womens teamthat he is in-charge of back home.

Yang was given the task of be-coming the team's mentor by Jengin 2013.

I was quite afraid at first. Buteventually I settled into the role. Idid a lot of research about coach-ing by going through videos on-line. That gave me a start, he re-calls. Interestingly enough, theTaipei womens team is the sameteam that will represent Taiwan atthe upcoming Asian Games.

The opportunity of becoming acoach had presented itself afterYang became Taiwans first pro-fessional player in 2010. Yang andhis classmates from college in factformed the first batch of athletesto represent their country inkabaddi. The rest, apart fromYang of course, quit the sport af-ter six months, making way fornew wide-eyed enthusiasts. In theprocess, Yang's 14-year long asso-

ciation with basketball dwindledto the point that it became a merehobby.

With the inaugural PKL title go-ing to the Jaipur team, the right-cover defender remains over-whelmed by the atmosphere hewitnessed. He has long been ac-customed to little or no audiencesupport at home.

I didnt play much, but the wayeach point is celebrated here givesme goosebumps, he says, flash-ing a wide smile. Seeing himselfon billboards and large posters, exhibiting an intimidating looktoo has been a unique experience.

Im still not used to being acelebrity, he adds.

Yangs first international tour-nament, back in 2009, came at atime when he still wasnt entirelyaware of the rules. He got familiarwith the trade whenthen a partof the junior Taiwan teamheplayed against Pakistan, Iran andhosts Malaysia in an invitationaltournament. Now he finds hisname on the roster of a championfranchise that belongs to a coun-try known as the haven forkabaddi back in Taiwan. He re-turns home now with enough ma-terial to make him an expert. Andby the time, Yang returns inMarch for PKL season II, he willbe Doctor Kabaddi.

Yang and his classmatesfrom college in fact

formed the first batch ofathletes to represent theircountry in kabaddi. Therest, apart from Yang ofcourse, quit the sport

after six months, makingway for new wide-eyed

    enthusiasts.
