Thermal Stresses in АNSYS Workbench 10.0
This material is designed for reminding of the subject, studied in the course. The explanation of the some simple operations is skipped here, so the material is not appropriate for unaided use. Even precise implementation of the instructions can cause results, different from described here. For additional information write to [email protected]
• Analysis – linear, steady-state conductivity, thermal stresses
• Geometry – medium complexity
• Materials – Copper Alloy and Structural Steel from the Ansys Workbench Library
• Load – thermal, steady-state
Description
Copper Alloy pipe is supported
by steel bolted bracket. The
temperature of the one end of the
pipe is raised from 25оС to 120оС.
The temperature of the other end is
permanently 25оС.
The geometrical model of the
pipe can be downloaded from
The aim is to determine the stress and strain in the nut
bolt, caused by thermal expansion of the pipe.

by clicking here.
- The pipe material changing
All parts of the model are defined as Structural Steel from program library. The pipe material will be
changed in Copper Alloy here.
Clicking around wile the part desired changes color.
Switching over “Import Material”
Choose the material (Copper Alloy) from the list.
- Defining of the contact surface conductivity
As the solution is steady state, if the surface conductivity at contact between the pipe and the bracket
exists, the uniform thermal expansion in the assembly is formed. In this case there isn’t thermal stresses.
In this example is expected the surface conductivity to be interrupted by applying extremely small
value (1е-10) of the contact thermal conductance.
Switching over manual control of the thermal conductance value.
Clicking around wile the contact surface desired changes color.
- Defying of the results expected for the nut bolt
When the results are displayed, the characteristics (minimum value, maximum value, color contours) refer to value in assembly. To specify the results for particular element, this must be announced in advance.

Strain distribution in the assemblyFor better view the deformed shape is overstated
If it is necessary, the strains can be displayed
in the real size.
