Administrative Structure:
South Korea comprises seven metropolitan cities including Seoul and nine provinces.
The seven cities - Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Inchon, Kwangju, Taejon and Ulsan - are accorded the same status as that of the larger and more populous provinces. Metropolitan city is divided into “ku”(ward) and these are further sub-divided into “dong”(neighbourhood), the lowest administrative unit.
The nine provinces are North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, Gangwon, Gyeonggi, North Gyeonsang, South Gyeonsang, South Gyeongsang, Jeju, North Jeolla, South Jeolla.
A province is divided into cities and “gun” (county). A city has many “dong” while a “gun” has many “up”(township) and “myon”(village)
National Day: 15 August (Independence/Liberation Day)
17 July (Constitution Day)
National Flag:
The Korean Flag is called TAEGUKKI. White part represents the land. The circle in the centre of the flag is divided into two equal parts. The upper red section represents the positive cosmic forces of Yang. Conversely, the lower blue section represents the
7
negative cosmic forces of Yin. The two forces together embody the concepts of continual movement and balance and harmony that characterize the sphere of infinity. The circle is surrounded four trigrams one in each corner. Each trigram symbolizes one of the four universal elements: heaven, earth, fire and water.
National Emblem:
The National Emblem of South Korea adopted in 1963 consists of the ‘taeguk' symbol bordered by five petals and a ribbon bearing the inscription “The Republic of Korea" in Hangul characters.
National Flower:
The National flower of Korea is the Mugunghwa or Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus). The flower’s symbolic significance stems from mugunghwa’s root word, “mugung” meaning immortality.
Land: 99,678 sq km (approximately 12% larger than West Bengal) largely hilly & mountainous mainly North to East. Along the Southern and Western coasts the mountains descend gradually towards broad coastal plains. Most of rivers have their tributaries on the North and East sides and flow into the Yellow and South Seas. Concentrated for the most part off the Southern coast are upwards of 3,000 islands of various sizes.
People: The Korean people are descendants of several Mongol tribal groups who migrated around 4,000 B.C. from what are now Siberia and Manchuria. They eventually became a homogeneous race, independent of their neighbours, with unique cultural traits distinct from the Chinese and Japanese. Two common observations about Korean people are their endurance and dynamism. Harsh weather, gruelling negotiations and after-hours socializing are all taken in stride in a 'work hard, play hard' culture. The Korean sense of humour is readily
8
apparent not only in daily interactions but also in the nation's rich folk art. Favourite songs, often sung at the end of parties or dinners, have lilting sad melodies, pointing to the strong element of melancholy contained in the Korean character. Koreans tend to vent their feelings and emotions - be it exuberance or anger, delight or frustration.
Koreans are one ethnic family speaking one language. In the seventh century AD, they were politically unified for the first time by the Shilla Kingdom (57 BC - AD 935) and subsequently achieved a great cultural flowering. Koreans struggled successfully for millennia to maintain their cultural and political identity despite the influence of neighbouring China and the more recent aggressive inclinations of the Japanese. They are a proud people with one of the longest national histories in the world.
Religion: Out of the registered religions, Buddhism and Confucianism were dominant in the past and have shaped both the way of life and the attitudes of Koreans since the three dynasties (Shilla, Koryo and Chosun from 233 B.C. to 1910 A.D.). Christianity has developed a vast following since its introduction in the late 18th century and its influence is now being felt throughout society. Freedom of religion is guaranteed under the ROK constitution.
Political Sys : The Constitution of the Republic of Korea calls for a liberal democratic political system. Its principles are based on the sovereignty of the people, with all the authority of state emanating from its citizens.
Government: Korea is a democratic republic with power centralized in a strong executive president.
Major Items of Export:
Semiconductors, wireless tele-communications equipment, motor
vehicles, computers, steel, ships, petrochemicals.
Major Items of Import: Petroleum and related products, Electrical machinery, Chemical and related products, Iron and Steel.

Brief on India-Korea Economic and Commercial Relations
1. Overview:
The trade and economic relations between India and Republic of Korea (Korea) have gathered momentum in recent years with bilateral trade reaching a substantial figure of $ 17.57 billion in 2013. India is the 15th largest trade partner of Korea. Bilateral Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CEPA) has spurred the process. Investments both ways are on the upswing. RoK is an export-driven economy and is drawn by India's huge market. However, India has to diversify its export market, particularly focusing on high-tech products rather than primary goods, if it has to penetrate the Korean import market.
Bilateral Trade
India's share in Korea's global trade is relatively low. In 2002 it was 0.83%, which rose to 1.63% in 2013, a significant increase though considerable scope still exists. India's contribution in Korea's global imports increased from 0.78% in 2001 to 1.2% in 2013. In 2013, India was Korea’s 18th biggest source for imports while India was its 9th biggest export market. India is now 15thlargest overall trading partner of Korea. In the last four decades, pattern of Korean exports has undergone significant transformation. Exports moved up the value chain from primary goods to light industrial products, to heavy industrial and to high-tech and knowledge-based products. There is also a need for diversification of the export products.
As per statistics published by Korea International Trade Association (KITA), the bilateral trade between Korea and India is as under:

About the Event:-
The InCosmetics Korea exhibition is the only exhibition in South Korea dedicated to the personal care
ingredients. The 2016 show was the second edition of InCosmetics Korea exhibition. This event took
place at Hall B of the COEX Exhibition and Convention Centre on 6th & 7th July, 2016 at Seoul, South
Korea. The exhibition was spread over an area of 2558 sq mt. The organiser of the said exhibition was
REED Exhibitions Ltd.
The show attracted 6152 unique visitors which is 97% year on year increase as compared to the 2015
edition. The success highlights the importance of the country to the global cosmetic industry and the
value manufacturers now place on the event. With the Korean market a hotbed of innovation, the event
was particularly popular domestically, with more than 5,300 domestic visitors – an 81% increase –
searching for innovative ingredients and seeking out future trends. However, it was the global appeal
of the event that stole the headlines, with the organisers reporting a dramatic 470% rise in
international visitors. In total, 804 visitors (13% of the total) travelled from outside Korea, with a large
number of formulators and R&D professionals making the trip from China, Thailand and Japan in
particular. The visitor profile included finished cosmetic product manufacturers, Raw material
suppliers, sales & marketing professionals, Scientists and Consultants, Research Institutions and
Distributors.
As a clear sign of the event’s success, all of the leading Korean cosmetic manufacturers were in
attendance. Specialists from Able, AmorePacific, Aekyung, Charmzone, Coreana, Cosmax, Doori,
Enprani, Hankook, Kolmar, LG, Nature Republic and TonyMoly all spent time browsing exhibitors’
stands and attending the show seminars. Plus, international brands including Amway, Beiersdorf,
Estée Lauder, Henkel, Johnson & Johnson, Kimberley Clark, La Prairie, L’Oréal, LVMH, Procter and
Gamble, Shanghai Jahwa and Shiseido, were also seen exploring ingredients for the next generation of
finished products.
In-cosmetics Korea ran a comprehensive, free-to-attend, educational programme throughout the
event. Seminars were grouped into three themes: Cosmetic Science and Technology, Innovation and
Marketing Trends and Regulations.
As at other in-cosmetics events around the globe, the Marketing Trends sessions were hugely popular
and visitors gathered to hear the latest developments in the cosmetic and personal care industry.
There was a 10% rise in the number of exhibitors from 200 to 219 exhibitors. The profile of exhibits
included manufacturers and suppliers of raw materials & ingredients for the cosmetics, toiletries,
personal care and fragrance industries, Testing and research laboratories, Packaging, Publications,
software companies and Trade Associations dealing with the personal care industry.
