X-ray Film
Film Structure Film base : 0.15-0.25 mm
- ท ำดวย polyester : blue base
Emulsion : 5-25 µm
-Silver halide suspended in gelatin
(AgBr 95% และ AgI/AgCl 5%)
Adhesive material : ยด film base และ emulsion
Film Material
• Silver bromide (AgBr) 90 - 99% • Silver iodide (AgI) • Silver chloride (AgCl)
Silver halide
Emulsion layer :
Radiation sensitivity and light sensitive layer
Silver halide crystal Tabular grain
Screen film : used with intensifying Screen
• More sensitive to light, less sensitive to x-rays
• Emulsion layer thinner direct-exposure film
• Less development time
Direct exposure film : non screen film used in cardboard holder
• Single emulsion significant thicker than screen film
• More exposure and development time
• Outdate technologies
ชนดของ film
• Single (emulsion) sided film
• Double (emulsion) sided film
1. Film speed
2. Film contrast
3. Spectral sensitivity
4. Crossover
5. Reciprocity law
6. Safelight
Screen film characteristics :
1. Film speed (Sensitivity) • Degree of emulsion sensitive to x-rays or light
• Greater speed of a film more sensitivity
Number and size of silver halide increases speed and sensitivity increases
Film speed increases Less radiation exposure produce a specific density Increase film speed
unsharpness
• Grain size • Emulsion thickness • Double emulsion
2. Film contrast • Ability of radiographic film to provide level of
black and white in image
High contrast film : more black and white areas Low contrast film : shows shade of gray
Radiation exposure
• Plotting optical densities corresponding to
the change in intensity of exposure results in a curve characteristic of the type of film
• Toe : Dmin
• Straight-line : most useful range of density
• Shoulder : Dmax
Contrast evaluated by the steepness or slope
A : higher Contrast
B : lower Contrast
3. Spectral sensitivity
• the color of light to which a particular film is most sensitive
• Blue – sensitivity
• Green – sensitivity
• Radiographic film is developed to be sensitive to a specific
color of visible light emitted by intensifying screen
spectral sensitivity – emission must be matched
appropriately
Spectral sensitivity
• the color of light to which a particular film is most sensitive
• Blue – sensitivity
• Green – sensitivity
• Radiographic film is developed to be sensitive to a specific
color of visible light emitted by intensifying screen
Spectral matching
• Spectral sensitivity – spectral emission must be matched appropriately
• Blue sensitive film with blue light – emitting screens
•Green sensitive film with green light – emitting screens
Spectral matching
Spectral matching and density
• To best use a film – screen system :
Failure to do Spectral matching results in suboptimal density
4. Crossover effect :
• the light produced by intensifying screen exposure to
emulsion and then cross over the base layer of the film to exposed the other emulsion
• problem unique to double emulsion film used with intensifying screen
• Decreases recorded detail on the film
• Silver halide crystal created with T-grain technology significant lower crossover
• Zero-crossover technology : adding anticrossover layer on each side of film base
5. Reciprocity law
The density produced by a radiograph is
equal for any combination of mA and exposure time
Exposure = Intensity x Time = mA x Sec = Constant optical opacity (Density)
Reciprocity failure
mA1S1 = mA2S2
100mA x 0.2 = 200mA x 0.1sec เมอใช IS
Density ไมเทากน
6. Spectral sensitivity and safelight
• Spectral sensitivity also relates to the color of light
produced with safelight filters in the darkroom. (Red
to brown)
• It is important to use the appropriate safelight filter
in all darkroom safelights to incorrect match with
spectral sensitivity of film results in unusually high
levels of safelight fogging on the film.
• This fogging appears increased density and
decreased contrast on the film.
Intensifying screen • Intensifying screen เปนอปกรณใน
radiographic cassttes ประกอบดวยphosphors ทเปลยนรงสเอกซเปนแสง
• Luminescence : emission of light
from the screen when stimulated
by radiation • fluorescence : emission of light while screen
exposed to x-rays 10-8 second
• Phosphorescence : continue to emit light
after x-rays exposed has stopped
screen lag or afterglow undesirable

• X-rays or light exposes to emulsion : Silver+& Bromide-
• Sensitivity specks trapping electron lose by Bromide- (e- + Bromide)
• Sensitivity specks are negative charged - attracted with positive silver
• Become metallic silver
