METHODICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Studying the topic 1 "The Main Tasks and Subject of the Discipline “History of Ukraine and Ukrainian Culture”", it is necessary to pay attention to Ukraine's geopolitical location between West and East, legislative design of the borders of Ukraine, its administrative division and population, the formation of the three branches of the state, the approval of state symbols as well as factors that influenced the formation of Ukrainian culture.

Studying the topic 2-1 "Medieval History of Ukraine", it is necessary to pay attention to the main stages of the development of early Slavic ethnic community and the conditions of the emergence of Kyivan Rus’ State; to explain the etymology of the words "Rus" and ''Ukraine"; to describe Kyivan Rus’ grand princes and the main directions of their activities; to explain the reasons for the political fragmentation of Rus'; to show the role of the Mongol invasion in consolidating this process and to characterize a political and economic structure of the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia. Using the map, view a geographical location of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine and pay attention to the strategic benefits of the position of the Ukrainian lands on the development of economy and feudal relations on its territories. It is important to determine the chronological framework of the stay of Ukrainian lands in the composition of Lithuania and to characterize the status of Ukrainian lands within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Then find the reasons for concluding the Union of Lublin in 1569 and show its consequences for the Ukrainian people.

Studying the topic 2-2 "Modern History of Ukraine", it is necessary to pay attention to the reasons of the appearance of Ukrainian Cossacks and the Zaporozhian Sich; causes and preconditions of the National Liberation War in Ukraine and the main course of events of 1648–1657; circumstances of the formation of the Ukrainian Cossack State and its internal structure; causes of the civil war in the second half of the 17th century as well as political and socio-economic development of Left-bank Ukraine and Right-bank Ukraine at the end of the 17th – the end of the 18th centuries.

Studying the topic 3 "The Founding of the Modern Ukrainian Nation and State (the 19th – 21th centuries)", it is necessary to pay attention to social and economic changes on the Ukrainian lands in the 19th century, trends in socio-political movements and organizations, activation of the national liberation struggle of Ukrainians, which contributed to the raising the level of a national consciousness and led to the creation of the first Ukrainian political party.

The World War I, the February Democratic Revolution of 1917, the founding of the Central Rada (Council), and eventually the proclamation of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, opened a new page in the history of the Ukrainian statehood. A complicated but very important stage in its socio-political and spiritual development began, despite the defeat of the Ukrainian National Democratic Revolution and the establishment of the Soviet power in the 1920s. It is important to analyze the results and lessons of the Ukrainian National Democratic Revolution of 1917–1920.

Antidemocracy and the terror of the 1930s as forms and methods of socio-political relations became the main means of obtaining Stalin and his supporters of boundless power. Consequences of repressions were terrible. Forced and violent Collectivization became the cause of the Holodomor (the Great Famine) of 1932–1933, which claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. Industrialization of the 1930s brought the USSR and Soviet Ukraine to a qualitatively new level of industrial development, while at the same time it was given a heavy price.

Considering the World War II, students are encouraged to study the nature of the war between Nazi Germany and the USSR, to determine the place of Ukraine in the plans of Germany, and to pay special attention to huge losses that Ukrainian people incurred as a result of the German occupation.

Reforms of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev did not change the essence of a totalitarian state in the 1950s–1960s. They were inconsistent, controversial, and often led to new problems. Some achievements of the scientific and technological revolution that took place around the World did not find support and application.

The second half of the 1960s – the 1980s is characterized as a period when economic growth slowed down, negative events in the social and economic life of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic grew.

Studying the events of the late 1980s and early 1990s, students should focus on external and internal factors that led to the emergence of a new independent state, i.e. Ukraine, on a political map of the World; to give a description of the country's start-up opportunities, and to show their positive and negative aspects. It is worth paying attention to the attributes of statehood: the fixing of borders, the definition of citizenship, the approval of state symbols, the introduction of own currency, the formation of three main branches of the state, the formation of priorities in external and internal development.

System of Knowelege Assessment

Accumulative system of assessment, i.e. 200 point scale, is used at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. It means that students obtain points by completing different tasks of the course. During the semester, these points are summarized and at the end of the course, a student will have an opportunity (in the case of successful completion of all the tasks) to get the maximum final score of 200 points.

There is a minimum number of points a student need for passing the training successfully, i.e. 120 points.

Five tests (following chapter 1 and 2) should be done in this distance course in MOODLE in the time of «7» days after the access to the resource is opened. Final test (a multiple choice test) is written in-class at the end of the semester according to an academic schedule which is done by the dean office.
