MY CITY: GHAZIABAD, INDIA
Salient Features:-
Area – 210 km2
Population – 3,000,000 (approx) Literacy rate – 94 percent An Industrial city well connected with roads and highways Shares boundary with New Delhi Infamously known as the most polluted city in Uttar Pradesh
According to the City Mayors Foundation Survey, Ghaziabad is described as the second fastest developing city in the world.
But is this development sustainable???
Lets have a closer look at some of the issues prevailing in the city…
INCREASED NUMBER OF PERSONAL VEHICLESNumber of cars and motor bikes has increased exponentially over the last four
years!
Problems it is causing.. Increased air pollution Rapid consumption of fossil fuels Traffic congestion on roads
What should be done?
Improve public transport options in the city – Buses and Metro
Change habits! Walk, bicycle for short distances Prefer public over private transport
“a bus can accommodate 20 times the number of people than a car and occupies just 3 times of the
space”
Why? Increased purchasing power of middle class Lack of sufficient public transport
POLLUTION IN THE RIVER HINDONThe only river in the city is getting polluted at a very rapid pace
Why? People throwing garbage Industrial discharge Untreated wastewater
What should be done?
Effective river cleaning drives Ban on dumping of industrial waste and
untreated wastewater into the river A sense of responsibility in the city inhabitants
Problems it is causing.. Contamination of ground water Risk of catching life threatening diseases Damage to aquatic life
UNCONTROLLED POPULATION GROWTHPopulation of Ghaziabad city is rising at an unprecedented pace
Why? Migration from nearby villages Lack of family planning
What should be done?
Educate people! – Awareness about family planning
Self-sustainable villages Mass tree-plantation drives Rain water harvesting
Problems it is causing.. Deforestation - real estate in place of green fields Lowering of ground water level - increased water
consumption
CONCRETE – A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL?Concrete is being used extensively as the building material in all major construction
work
Environmental Impact CO2 emission from production –
Contributes to green house effect and global warming
High energy consumption in production and transportation
Solid waste generation
What should be done?
Newer concretes with recycled admixtures Design Improvements – alternatives of
conventional cement (e.g. fly ash) Alternative fuels containing Biomass Effective concrete recycling Alternative “green” building materials
THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT…We, the residents of Ghaziabad, need to improve our habits and lifestyle
Switch off lights when leaving
the house/office
Turn off the engine at
traffic lights
Stop using plastic bags
Keep the city clean – throw
garbage in dustbins
Close the tap when not in
use
