Day 1 : Flight and Anaheim Garden Walk

New Jersey District Key Clubbers woke up bright and early to arrive at the Newark Airport at 4:45am. The flight was approximately 5 and a half hours and due to the time difference we landed around 9am at LAX. We then drove to the Anaheim Marriott, our hotel, and checked in.

Everyone was definitely jet-lagged so we took some downtime before going out. At 3pm we went out for dinner (since it felt like 6pm to us) at Fire&Ice Restaurant in the Anaheim Garden Walk. It was an open shopping plaza with clothing stores, a bowling alley, and a move theater. Fire&Ice was a lovely Mongolian place.

Day 2 : Disney California

On the second day we went to Disneyland Resort to attend an animation workshop with a behind-the-scenes Disney tour for 3 hours. We got to meet Crush from Nemo and ended the tour with the Tower of Terror.

We ran into some amazing Georgia Key Clubbers in the park as well! Once the tour was over, we went off on our own (into groups of 4+ people) to spend the day in Disney. We were free to roam the park as long as we pleased if we checked-in at the appropriate times. We ate dinner in the park at one of

At night in DCA there was a dj dressed up like a bunny that many of the NJ District Key Clubbers enjoyed dancing too!

Venice Beach is more surfer-style while Santa Monica is very up-scale. The Santa Monica Pier has several rides and restaurants and a beautiful beach. We all enjoyed taking pictures with our favorite stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well.

Day 3 : California Tour and Meet&Greet

\ On Wednesday we woke up and hopped on a 55-passenger tour bus and went on a California tour. We stopped at Venice Beach, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Hollywood Sign.

At night was the ICON Meet&Greet which went from 9:30pm-11:30pm, was when all ICON attendees went into a ballroom and got to meet each other and trade district pins. This was done while enjoying games, live music, and photo-ops. Key Clubbers from other countries were there as well!

The first day of ICON started with, of course, the opening session from 9:30am to 11:30am. All nations of KCI were introduced and then there were welcome addresses. There were introductions—of guests, the international board, and the district governors—and then Keynote speaker Chris Bashinelli. We had lunch on our own and then caucusing began. Caucusing was when candidates running for the international board came in and gave a short speech, then answered questions from the audience. Caucusing went from 1pm to 5pm and the New Jersey District was in a caucusing room with sister-districts Nebraska-Iowa and Wisconsin-Upper Michigan. After caucusing we had dinner and began the House of Delegates from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. We disputed several amendments (including raising international dues to $7.00, which passed) and then we attended a beach dance from 9:30pm to 11:30pm. During the dance was contest judging as well. Curfew every night was at midnight.

Day 4 : First Day of ICON

Day 5 : Second Day of ICON

The second day commenced with a meet the candidates session from 8am-9am where candidates gave short speeches and answered one question. Then, there was a growth session with speaker Matt Mattson. We all then took one workshop from 10:30am-11:50am. From noon to 2pm there was a luncheon with inspirational speaker Louise Ashby. The service fair went from 3pm-5pm where Key Clubbers could learn and purchase things from other districts. There was a March of Dimes table, a Key Leader table, and each candidate was set-up with their own table to answer any questions that Key Clubbers had. Then there was the recognition session where talent acts performed, awards were given, and distinguished district executives were recognized. Since it was the Fourth of July, everyone went to dinner and fireworks in Disney from 7pm-11:30pm.

The last day was certainly the busiest. We started with workshops at 8am, attended four of them, and ended at 2:50pm after a lunch break. Then House of Delegates began. We voted on the remaining candidates (several had been voted out during nomination

conference). The international president and vice president candidates that lost were moved onto the international trustee ballot. Therefore, it was announced that Maria Palazzolo would be the international president and Kevin Zhang won international vice president. At the closing session from 7:30pm to 9pm the international trustees were announced, including New Jersey’s very own Nicole Lema! (see picture above). The old board was retired and the new one was installed. Then, Maddi Robling, the Indiana District Governor, announced the 2015 Indianapolis ICON.

Day 7: Disneyland and Flight Home

Most districts went home the night of or the morning after ICON. However, the New Jersey District scheduled a red-eye flight at 11:41pm so we could use the day to go to Disneyland Park in Disneyland Resort. We had to have our luggage in our district suite by 10am and were free to

go to the park whenever we pleased as long as we were back by 7:30pm. Our flight home landed at 8:00am at Newark Airport. The experience was surreal and when we all got on the flight home I know that no on wanted to leave. As excited as we were to get back to our own beds and families, this week was a once-in-a-lifetime chance and none of us wanted to see it end.
