The simple classical language of the original building with grids of punched windows and stacked pilasters and entablatures is abstracted to create a more contemporary composition of frit and vision glass. This maximizes daylighting and provides research-ers with both muted and unobstructed views. The modularity of the new faade is derived from the 1894 building for overall coherence and consistency while working compositionally at different scales.

The use of interior glazing permits daylight to penetrate deep into the lab zone and also is a proven device to increase interaction between researchers. The visual stimulation of seeing ones colleagues enhances esprit de corps and creates opportunities to share knowledge and discoveries as part of the culture of the workplace.
