ASSOCIATED SENIOR ACTION PROGRAM Associated Senior Action Program, otherwise known as ASAP, is made up of a group of dedicated volunteers assigned to the City of San Juan Capistrano Police Services Department. Under the direction of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, ASAP was started in San Juan Capistrano in 1992 to provide auxiliary support to Police Services. Over the years, ASAP members have become an integral part of City special events such as the Swallows Day Parade, July 4th Celebration, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Summer Nites Concert Series. In addition, weekly assignments such as the Van and Bike Patrol, the Train Depot Information Kiosk and providing administrative and public reception services in the Police Services building, are all part of the ASAP regular responsibilities.
The ASAP program is always looking for interested reliable volunteers that find this type of community service appealing. For more information or to obtain an application, please call (949) 443-6369 or come into the Police Services building at 32506 Paseo Adelanto, just past City Hall. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

CITY PROVIDES FLOOD ZONE AND FEMA INSURANCE INFORMATION
Flooding after a major rain storm, particularly in creek and river floodplains, has been happening for millennia. It is only with the development of settlements, towns and cities that this natural occurrence has had a major impact to our urbanized way of life. As more of our precious lands are developed, it is harder for water to infiltrate into the ground.
Flooding occurs when a significate amount of storm water is converted to runoff instead of being absorbed by the surrounding soil. This excess surface water (runoff) must be redirected away from the impervious layers of vast concrete surfaces, parking lots, roadways, etc. into manmade conveyance systems such as storm drains, v-ditches and concrete channels. Less surface area = more runoff carried by our storm drainage system. This water collection system allows the water to actually reach the flood control channels faster then Mother Nature would have moved it, thus bring the channel’s water level higher in a shorter period of time. Therefore, flooding may happen more quickly and with a greater intensity than before urbanization occurred.
Local residents and businesses may review a variety of flood-related reference materials at City Hall. Ask for assistance at the Public Works counter for flood map determinations, flood proofing techniques and other questions you may have regarding FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program. Or you may call the City’s Public Works and Utilities Department at (949) 443-6352. If you are net-savvy, you can surf to the FEMA website at www.fema.gov. Here are some weather-related sites you may find informative: www.noaa.gov, www.accuweather.com, www.weather.com and www.govlink.org.

T his excellent program serves families who seek an educa onal experience that is fun, unique, and academic. The planned lessons and ac vi es are not only academic, but hands‐on and exci ng. We individualize the learning process, so
that each child may feel successful with their learning regardless of their age or skill. Our small class sizes allow for a safe learning environment that nurtures independent, confident, and cri cal thinkers. In addi on to school readiness skills and academics, the program now offers a Spanish language dynamic. Children will be exposed to the Spanish language with the use of the “word of the day” techniques using songs and music.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT Beth Summerl, RN
B eth Summerl likes to talk about transformation. "Teaching the Stress Reduction through Mindfulness class," she says,
"I witness the transformation of people's lives. It's very deep and incredibly satisfying."
As an RN and breast cancer survivor, Beth knows about stress and the damage it can do. "Stress is chemical. The brain perceives a danger and sends an alarm. The chemicals produced as a result reduce pleasure, inhibit the immune system, raise blood pressure, change the metabolism, and shorten life. This is fact."
What's also fact is that mindfulness meditation practice can change all that. As reported recently in Time Magazine, Scientific American, on 60 Minutes and even in the Orange County Register and LA Times, MRIs of the brain show that with meditation, the brain changes. The reactive centers calm, and the gray matter thickens in the areas
where we perceive options. "People finish the 8-week class and walk out in a substantially different relationship with the world."
"Mindfulness changed my life," Beth says. "I'm so much happier. It sounds so woo-woo, but it's true. The stressors are still there, but I don't suffer because of them anymore. This is what I love sharing."
"My favorite quote right now is from Anais Nin: 'And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.' Blossoming is what this class is all about."
Belly Dancing and World Hand
Drumming will be back in the
Summer!
