Executive Summary
ServervirtualizationhasbecomeacommonpartoftodaysITdatacenters. Oneofthemajorbenefitsof
servervirtualizationistheabilitytoconsolidatehundredstothousandsofvirtualizedserversinafew
physicalserversintoasinglevirtualinfrastructure. ThisconsolidationcansignificantlyreduceITrelated
CAPEXandOPEX. Therapiddeploymentofvirtualizedinfrastructureshasbeenmaturingandgrowingin
sizewhichhasmadeinfrastructuremanagementmorecomplex. HitachiDataSystemsrecently
introducedaconvergedsolutiontonotonlysimplifythedeploymentofavirtualinfrastructurebutalso
simplifythemanagementofthatinfrastructure.
ConvergedinfrastructuresolutionscanreduceOPEXbyminimizinganadministratorstimewith
provisioningresources,managing,monitoringandtroubleshootingthedatacenterinfrastructurewith
centralizedmanagement. Inturn,thiswillminimizesystemdowntimethereforereducingtheimpacton
SLAs. Thesetypesofconvergedsolutionsaregoodforrapiddeploymentofprivatecloudenvironments
withthenecessarysecuritybuiltin.
HitachiUnifiedComputePlatform(UCP)ProforVMwarevSphereisthenextgenerationin
infrastructuremanagementandispartoftheHitachisolutionforbuildingandmanagingvirtual
infrastructuresasaconsolidatedbusinessresourcepool. UCPProforVMwarevSpherearchitectureis
designedtoenablerapiddeploymentandsimplifiedmanagementofenterpriseclassvirtual
infrastructures.
UCPPro
for
VMware
vSphere
fully
integrates
and
supports
both
physical
and
virtual
componentsoftheinfrastructureandsupportssimpleautomationandorchestrationthroughitsHitachi
UnifiedComputePlatform(UCP)Directorsoftware,whichisintegrateddirectlyintoVMwarevCenter.
Minimalphysicalinstallationisrequiredsinceallcomponents(servers,networkingandstorage)are
alreadycabledandintegratedtogetheratthefactorytocreateareadymadedatacenter. TheseHitachi
brandedcomponentsincludeIntelXeonprocessorbasedHitachiCB500bladechassisandachoiceof
HitachiVirtualStoragePlatform(VSP),HitachiUnifiedStorageVM(HUSVM),orHitachiUnifiedStorage
150(HUS150). IntelhasrearchitectedtheXeonfamilytoaddthespecificcapabilitiesneededfor
todaysITstorageproblems,enablingtheenergyefficientperformance,dataprotectionandscalability
toaddresstheexplosionofdata,improvedatacenterefficiencyandprepareforemergentusagemodels
atthesamepowerenvelopeinanintelligententerprise. VMwarevSphere5.1andtheintegratedUCP
Directormanagement
software
is
also
pre
installed,
reducing
installation
and
configuration
time
and
cost,whichcaninturnminimizeongoingmaintenancecosts. UsingUCPDirectorstandardtemplatesto
deployESXihosts,theuseralwaysstartsfromtheexactsameknownstate. Thisallowsforfaster
deploymenttimeandlowercostofoperations.

ArchitectedproductslikeUCPProforVMwarevSpherefulfillarequirementforthosewhoneedto
rapidlydeployandmanageanenterprisevirtualinfrastructureand/orprivatecloud. Thisconverged
solutionfrom
HDS
is
built
to
order,
pre
tested
and
pre
configured
to
customer
requirements
before
it
reachesitsdestinationinthedatacenter. TheunifiedmanagementandtheuseofRESTfulpublicAPI
and/orCLIintegratedintoVMwarevCentergivestheadministratortheabilitytovisualizethecomplete

VMwarevSphereisthefirstofseveralhypervisorsandnativetier1applications(likeMicrosoftHyperV,
OracleDatabase,MicrosoftExchange,etc)UCPProforVMwarevSpherewillsupport.
EvaluatorGroupassessedtheUCPProforVMwarevSpherehardwarearchitectureandsoftware
systemsmanagement
in
December
2012.
We
reviewed
the
UCP
Director
software
integrated
within
VMwarevCenterandvalidateditsfunctionality.
Enterprise System Management Challenges with VirtualInfrastructures
EvaluatorGroupspeakswithITusersfromcompaniesofallsizesacrosstheworld. Althoughnew
architectures,capabilitiesandapplicationspresentongoingchallengesforITstaffinVMware
environments,thefactremainsthatalargeportionoftimeandresourcesremaindedicatedto
installationsofvirtualizedinfrastructures. Despitetherecentwidespreadadoptionofserver
virtualizationand
all
its
benefits,
the
process
of
building
and
managing
anew
non
integrated
virtual
infrastructure(servers,network,storage,virtualization,OSandapplications)canbeastimeconsuming
asanonvirtualizedinfrastructure. Inaddition,someofthetimeconsumingmanagementtasksITstaff
findwithatraditionalnonintegratedare:
ImagemanagementManagingupdates,changingdefaultimagesandmaintainingactiveimagesforeachhost(ESXiServer)canbetimeconsumingandattimesdifficulttomanagein
largerenvironments. Keepingtrackofnewupdatesandpatches,alongwithcreatingnewimages
andmodifyingautodeployrulescanbecometedious.
MonitoringItcanbedifficulttomonitoravirtualizedinfrastructurewhenthereisnosingleinterfacetomonitorboththephysicalandvirtualcomponents. Alertsofpendinghardware
failurescan
be
missed
or
go
undetected.
Without
the
holistic
picture
in
asingle
management
systemthiscouldcauselongertroubleshootingtimes.
Provisioningo Host(ConfiguringahostanddeployinganESXiimage)Performingthisprocessmanually
raisesthepossibilityofmakingerrorsalongtheway. Findingtherightimagesanddrivers
onlinecanbetimeconsuming.

A
typical
scenario
can
look

Oncetheadministratorputsinarequestforstoragetothestorageadministrator,he/shehastoidentifyspaceandlocationtocreatethevolumeorLUNandaddit
totheinfrastructure.
WhenthevolumeorLUNhasbeenadded,theSANadministratorneedstoidentifytheWWNsforthehostandarrayportsandcreatethezonesinthe
appropriatefabric.
AtthispointtheVIadministratorcanmountthenewstoragevolume,thencreateandformatpartitions,andcreatetheneededdatastores.
o Network(ConfiguringaVLAN)Performingthisprocessmanuallycanbeerrorprone,time
consuming
and
complex
too.
Identifying
all
of
the
hosts
in
acluster
to
collect
VLAN
information,determiningportconnectionsfromeachhost,andconfiguringallswitch

CostCentralizingwithinasingleconsolecansavetimeandmoneyinsimplifiedmanagement,lowertheriskofhumanerrorwithautomatedtasks,andprovidetheabilitytocoordinate
workflow.
FlexibilityandAgilityRapiddeploymentallowstheadministratortorespondquicklytorequestsandeffectivelymeetSLAs. Thisconsolidatedapproachmakesactivitieslikechargeback

Validation Overview & ObjectivesHitachi Data Systems commissioned Evaluator Groupto validatetheirclaims of the rapiddeployment
and ease of management of Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) Pro for VMware vSphere. The
validationobjectivesweretoobserveandconductthefollowingfunctionality:
1. ProvisionphysicalserversandESXiservers2. ImageManagementandDeployment3. StorageProvisioning4. ConfiguringVLANs5. EaseofuseandfeelofinventorywithUCPProforVMwarevSphere
Evaluation Findings
Monitoring with Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) Director
UCPProforVMwarevSphereshowsacompletehardwareinventory(computechassis,servers,storage,
EthernetandFCswitches). Scansareperformedregularlytokeephardwaredetailsuptodate. The
followingtablesnotonlyshowedinventoryinformationbutalsostatusandhealth(greenorred)ofthe
hardware. ThishardwareinformationcoupledwiththevCenterinformationaboutthevirtual
infrastructuregivestheadministratoranendtoendviewtohelpwithmonitoringforSLAsand
troubleshootingforissues.
ComputeChassistable Therewasgooddetailofthecomputechassis,includingdetailsofeachbladesconfiguration. Therearetwowaystoviewthephysicalserverinventory.
StoragetableDetailsoftheHitachiVirtualStoragePlatform(VSP)storagearraywaseasytofindonthestoragepage. ThetoplevelstoragepageshowstabsforwhichPools,Volumesand
Portsareavailableandthepageshowshardwaredetails,suchasserialnumber,microcode
version,capacityandID. Detailsaboutavailable,reservedallocatedorunallocatedcapacitywas
alsoinformationeasilyfound.
FibreChannelSwitchestable ThistableshowedtheportID,state(online,nolight,nosync),status,WWNconnection,andthedevicetheportisconnectedto. Wedrilleddowntothe
Credentials
and
IP
address
tab
and
were
able
to
get
the
username,
password
detection
and
managementIPaddress.
EthernetswitchestableNetworkingmappingcanbeviewedthroughserverdetails. VLANIDs,portsandEthernetdevicesconnectedtoaredisplayed. Thistabledisplayedswitchname,status
(active,unreachable,unsupported,initializing),serialnumber,type,makeandmodel,firmware
version,managementIPaddressandID.

Provisioning physical servers and ESXi servers
UCPProforVMwarevSphereUCPDirectorwithinvCenterprovidesacompleteserverhardware
inventoryviewtoprovisionphysicalserversandbuildESXiserverswithESXiAutoDeploy. Imagesfor
deploymentwereeasytocreate. UCPDirectorworkswiththeHitachiComputeSystemManager
(HCSM)toprovidetheserverhardwareviewinvCenter. Inaddition,eventscommunicationcreatedby
theUCPDirectorbetweenvCenterandHCSMgaveusachancetoseealerts,suchashardwarefailures,
showupandtriggeranalarmautomatically. Thisallowedustoobserveaphysicalserverautomatically
putintomaintenancemodeandthemigrationoftheVMstoanotherphysicalserver.
Inorder
to
administer
physical
servers
and
images,
new
UCP
administrator
roles
with
the
appropriate
permissionsmustbeadded. Theactualmanagementofallphysicalserverswasshownthroughusing
UCPDirector. Eachserverhasatableofinformation(Figure5)showingpower,hostnamesfrom
vCenter,healthstatistics,serverserialnumber,slotlocationinachassis,imageinformation,component
resourcesandmore.

Image Management and Deployment
Normallymanaginghostimages(ESXiserverimages)inVMwarevCenterisamanualprocesswhich
requiresmultiplestepsorcanbeautomatedusingVMwarePowerCLI. HitachiUnifiedCompute
Platform(UCP)ProforVMwarevSpherehasalreadyautomatedthisprocesssothereisnoneedtowrite
anythinginPowerCLI,savingtimefortheadministrator. WeobservedthatUCPDirectorallowedusto
reviewrepositoriesforimages. ThenwewereabletoclonethatrepositorytotheinventoryasaUCP
imagewhichcanbedeployedononeoftheservers.
OnedefaultimagecomeswithUCPProforVMwarevSpherethatcontainsallthesupporteddrivers. We
observedthisimagebeingdeployedonaserver,copiedtobecloned,andcopiedtobechangedfor
otherrequirements. Eachservertypewillhaveadefaultimagefromwhichtowork. Inaddition,we
observedthat
when
aphysical
server
is
reset
then
through
vCenter
an
image
will
be
automatically
deployed. Ifthereisnospecificimageconfiguredforthephysicalserverthedefaultimageforthat
servertypewouldbedeployed. Inourcasethedefaultimagewasdeployed. Weeasilyclonedanimage
fromthehostimagestablewithjustarightclick,fillinginanewnamefortheimageinthedialogbox,
thenclickingOK.
Figure6showsthetableforviewingandmanagingimages. HitachiUnifiedComputePlatform(UCP)
DirectorConsolehasahostimagestabundertheserversectionthatgaveusaviewoftheimage
details,suchas,imagename,ID,defaultornot,status,UCPimage,descriptionoftheimage,vendor,last
modifiedandmore. Thenwedrilleddowndeepertoseeotherimagedetails,suchaspackage
information(name,vendor,version,releasedataandmore).
Weobservedotherimagemanagementoperations,likeeditingandconfiguringimages,checkingfor
updates,makingchangestothedefaultimage,assignedanimagetoanotherphysicalserver,and
deployingpendingimages.

The
Hitachi
Device
Manager
(HDM)
is
used
first
to
create
the
storagepools. Thesestoragepoolscreatedfromphysicalparitygroupscanbestripedwideandenable
thinprovisioningtominimizeoverprovisioning. Inaddition,ifatieredstorageapproachisneededto
prioritizeperformancecharacteristics,HDTcanhaveSSD,SASandSATAdrivesinthesamestoragepool.
ThenUCPDirectorusestheHitachiDeviceManager(HDvM)asastorageelementtoprovisionstorage
volumes. WeobservedavolumebeingcreatedontheHitachiVSPthroughthisintegratedstorage
managementandthenbepresentedinvCenterinventoryasavailablespaceforthecluster. This
demonstratedastorageprovisioningworkflow.
OncestoragepoolswerecreatedtheywereviewedviathePoolsTableshowninfigure7below. The
poolstableshowedinformationlikethestatus,thetotalphysicalcapacity,thetypeofpool(HDPorHDT),
physicalutilization
and
ID.
We
drilled
down
further
into
the
pool
details
and
observed
drive
type,
the
availablecapacity(GB)andpercentallocated. InadditiontheVolumetabshowedusthevolumesand
eachvolumesdetailintheselectedpool. WenotonlyobservedtheLDEV,nameandtheassociated
poolID,butalsothemappinginformationshowingthephysicalserver(s)thatthevolumeisattachedto
anditsutilizationinformation. Foradditionalmappinginformationwelookedattheportstable. The
porttableshowedthenameofthearrayport,theWWN,thespeed,thetype(Fibre,iSCSI,orFCoE),and

Configuring VLANs
HitachiUnifiedComputePlatform(UCP)DirectoractsasaninterfacetotheEthernetswitchinside
vCenterandisabletoreporthardwareeventsandautomateVLANconfigurationsforanyEthernet
switch.
We
observed
that
the
two
Ethernet
switches
used
in
the
validation
were
already
added
to
UCP
Directorinventoryandwereavailabletobeconfigured. WeobservedthisintheEthernetSwitchestable
whichshowedtheswitchnames,thestatusofeachswitch,theserialnumberofeachswitch,switch
type,makeandmodel,firmwareversion,IPaddressandID.
OnceEthernetswitcheshavebeenaddedVLANscanbecreatedforthevirtualmachinenetwork. Thisis
normallycreatedmanuallywithinvCenter. OnceVLANsontheESXiservershavebeendefinedthrough

rapidly
deploy
and
manage
aVMware
vSphere
infrastructureordeployaprivatecloud. TheunifiedmanagementwiththetightintegrationoftheUCP
DirectorwithinvCenterdoesgivetheadministratoranendtoendviewfromvCentertoorchestrate,
monitor,andtroubleshoottheirinfrastructuretomeetandkeepSLAs. Thisconvergedsolutioncan
maximizetheuseofanadministratorstimeandshowsahighdegreeofflexibilityindeployingand
