2020 High School Area Show
Juror statement-Barb Whitney Executive Director for Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center
What an honor to serve as the juror for the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ 2020 High School Area Show! I was impressed by the varied and numerous entries of artwork created by high school students in Southwest Michigan. As an important part of the jury process, I seek works of art that warrant a closer look. They make take pause, command me to gasp, or even made me laugh out loud. Each of the above measures are difficult to achieve, as I witness a wide array of art on a daily basis. As an educator, I appreciate that each step of learning leads to growth and serves as a building block for the next level of competence. As a juror, I am driven by an interest in emotive content with a high level of execution. I measure success both analytically and viscerally. The art in this exhibition demonstrated exceptional artistry in combining both skill and creative voice to render an effective visual statement. The selected works demonstrate imagination, creativity, skill, and excellence in craftsmanship. Beyond representing light and shadow or rhythm and balance, they have consciously created a narrative, and they have invited interaction. The art in the 2020 Kalamazoo Institute of Arts High School Area Show evidences important ways of understanding and creating art; students have effectively used the elements and principles as means for self-expression and visual communication. Arts education experiences measurably improve students’ lives and their future trajectory. I would like to take a moment to note the extraordinary role teachers, administrators, and parents play in guiding students through the learning process. Thanks to Kim Long and the team at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for their commitment to highlighting artistic talent. Finally, I would like to recognize our represented students for their talent and achievement. Congratulations!
6th District Congressional Art Competition
Selected piece: Audrey Blough,
St. Joe Lighthouse Drenched in Beauty
Once again the Congressional Art Competition highlighted all of the creative and talented students here in
southwest Michigan. Audrey’s piece is remarkable, and we are all so proud that their art will now represent
our community as it hangs in our nation’s Capitol building for the next year. She clearly has an extraordinary
skillset and a bright future. I would like to thank everyone who submitted a piece in the Kalamazoo Institute
of Arts 2020 High School Area Show, which has hosted the Congressional Art Competition for seven years.
