The Search for Excellence
Career Services
For technology, engineering and science firms, there is no better place to find top-caliber recruits than Harvey Mudd College.
Harvey Mudd and its students Harvey Mudd College is a private, co-educational, under-graduate-only liberal arts college of engineering, science and mathematics located in Claremont, California. We educate the nation’s brightest young engineers, scientists and mathemati-cians to understand relationships. Regardless of their majors, our students graduate as passionate problem solvers who think across disciplines, communicate, collaborate and under-stand their impact on society. Harvey Mudd is widely recognized for its programmatic innovation, excellence and vigor. The curriculum is designed to provide scientists, mathematicians and engineers with unusual breadth in their technical education and a firm grounding in the humanities and social sciences. Students graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in STEM careers. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked Harvey
Mudd among the top 20 undergraduate liberal arts colleges, and the College is ranked in the top 20 of Forbes’ list of Most Entrepreneurial Colleges. Harvey Mudd ranks No. 1 among the nation’s undergraduate engineering programs (U.S. News). PayScale ranks the College No. 1 for graduates’ return on investment. Harvey Mudd is a member of the Claremont University Con-sortium, a group of autonomous undergraduate and graduate institutions that includes Claremont McKenna College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont Grad-uate University and Keck Graduate Institute for Applied Life Sciences. With a combined total of 8,000 students, 2,300 fac-ulty and staff members and 560 acres of land, the campuses cooperate to provide facilities, services and opportunities typically found only at major universities.
Why recruit here?Organizations like recruiting at Harvey Mudd College because our students are top-quality candidates. Employers who succeed in hiring even one candidate a year from Harvey Mudd are quite pleased due to the competition for the 100-plus highly skilled “Mudders” available for employment.
Three great reasons Harvey Mudd College students merit attention:
Harvey Mudd students are among the best and brightest in the country.
Students receive a world-class science, engineering and mathematics education at Harvey Mudd, one of the most selective colleges in the world.
Students understand the power of collaboration. They engage in research, Clinic projects and community service, working on teams to solve current, relevant problems.

All-star studentsThe heart and soul of the College is its students, approximately 800 young men and women who are among the nation’s scientific and technological elite. In any given admitted class, nearly all of the students placed in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Typically, 40 percent were salutatorians or valedictorians. During their time at Harvey Mudd, many students continue to earn academic distinction. Mudders garner prestigious academic awards and scholarships, including the Churchill Scholarship, Goldwater Scholarship, Hertz Foundation Fel-lowship, Astronaut Scholarship, National Science Foundation Fellowship and Watson Fellowship. Mudders aren’t just gifted academically; they also pursue many other interests, including athletics and music. Harvey Mudd is the smallest of the undergraduate colleges in Clare-mont, yet one-third of the musicians in The Claremont College Orchestra are Mudders.
In the words of employers… Bright Talented Resourceful Outside-the-box thinkers Enthusiastic
Highly motivated Top candidates Well-prepared Some of our best employees Team players
Contributors Experienced Leaders Smart The best and the brightest
Mudd students are versatile problem solvers. They are very adaptable and have a genuine curiosity that allows them to learn quickly. Their focus on engineering and liberal arts brings a unique perspective to the work environment that we don’t find in other engineering school students.— KARL CHAN, CTO, LASERFICHE
Challenging and rigorous curriculumHarvey Mudd students major in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics or physics, or in one of three interdisciplinary majors: chemistry and biology; computer science and mathematics; mathematical and computational biology. Also, students have the option of creating an individ-ual program of studies or choosing an off-campus major. For each major, a unique blend of courses—integrated with Clinic and research projects—provides students with a solid under-standing of fundamental principles and concepts, strengthens practical problem-solving skills, fuses theory, analysis and design, and explores advanced material in unusual depth. The curriculum, designed expressly to challenge bright and highly motivated students, is among the most rigorous in the nation. Harvey Mudd believes STEM students can only understand their impact on society if they understand society. Our educa-tional experience starts with the Common Core, a set of coor-dinated courses in all the STEM disciplines—biology, chemis-
try, computer science, engineering, math and physics—as well as classes in academic writing and critical inquiry. In addition to the Core, the College requires one quarter of coursework to be in the humanities, social sciences and the arts.
Judging performance at Harvey Mudd CollegeHarvey Mudd takes very seriously the judging of academic performance, and grading is rigorous. Since 1955, just seven students have earned a 4.0 grade point average. The average GPA over the last five years has been 3.33. So, overall GPA is a potentially misleading measure of a student’s academic per-formance. The major GPA is a better indicator of aptitude and performance. We suggest that employers look beyond the GPA to the breadth of the curriculum and the entire educational experience. We believe you will find extraordinarily capable and versatile graduates fully prepared for the challenges in your organization.
Harvey Mudd engineering graduatesHarvey Mudd College is widely recognized for its outstanding undergraduate engineering program, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Unlike peer institutions, Harvey Mudd offers a general engi-neering program that focuses on the fundamentals and problem solving of engineering. The curriculum is divided into three branches: engineering science, systems and DMM (design, manufacturing and management)—each offering rigorous analysis of theoretical principles and intensive hands-on expe-rience. Contemporary projects like those in Clinic—a required,
three-semester experience—ensure that Harvey Mudd gradu-ates have the confidence and skills to solve any challenge. Employers find that Harvey Mudd engineering graduates rap-idly come up to speed in their chosen niche and that they can quickly master new areas as the job requires. Of the approx-imately 200 Harvey Mudd graduates each year, about 70 are engineering majors. Harvey Mudd has the greatest gender diversity among top-tier engineering programs. In 2014, Har-vey Mudd awarded more engineering degrees to women (56 percent) than to men.
Fenwick & West is seeking engineers and computer science majors from Harvey Mudd College who are interested in a career in patent law. Harvey Mudd’s broad technical education and dual focus on liberal arts provide an ideal foundation for this career path, which involves learning about a wide variety of technologies and industries, applying the law to construct a coherent intellectual property strategy and writing patent applications that clearly explain the technology. Typically one of the larger employers of each graduating class, Fenwick has hired more than a dozen Harvey Mudd alumni and is looking for more to train and add to the team.

Hiring from Harvey MuddThe Office of Career Services (OCS) partners with organi-zations in order to assist them with their hiring needs and to learn from them about their industry.
Post a job on ClaremontConnectThe OCS is a member of the NACElink/Symplicity Net-work, so if you have an account on the network, go to the Harvey Mudd College web page for employers and log in to ClaremontConnect. If you are new, simply set up an account; your listing is free.
Tip 1: Posting at Harvey Mudd makes your position viewable to students at all of The Claremont Colleges.
Tip 2: Marketing your organization with a “customized” profile will attract student interest. We suggest including a logo, video and detailed company facts.
Offer paid summer internships Internships provide the perfect opportunity to get your organization’s name known on a small campus like Harvey Mudd. If a student has a great experience, he or she is likely to recommend you to peers. Most of our students get well-paying internships because of their valuable talents and skills.
Tip: List your position on ClaremontConnect and plan to attend the spring career fairs.
Attend fall and spring career fairs Our career fairs are often the best way to interact with Harvey Mudd students. Based on our annual exit sur-veys, the largest percentage of students find employment through the career fairs. Students from the other Claremont Colleges are invited, too.
Tip 1: Register early on ClaremontConnect to reserve your spot.
Tip 2: Use the resume books to search for candi- dates after the event (no additional charge to registrants.)
Access online resume booksWe offer resume books, a feature of ClaremontConnect, as another resource for our employers. There is a nominal charge, (career fair participants have free access). Resume book content is dynamic. New candidates can continue to add their resumes, while existing candidates may change or add a new resume at any time. To participate, please read the Resume Book User Agreement on Claremont-Connect.
Tip 1: Access the fall Resume Book, available in October and the spring Resume Book, available in February. Resume books include the resumes of students from all Harvey Mudd majors.
Tip 2: Use your access to the resume books to directly invite students to your information sessions. This is a very successful tactic.
Conduct an information session Due to rigorous academic and extracurricular schedules, students may not always be available. We encourage employers to consider conducting information sessions during meal times—lunch or dinner in Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons. You can request an information table. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re far from campus, we might be able to arrange a virtual information session.
Tip: Request an information session early on Claremont Connect to give the OCS adequate time to market your session.
Hold on-campus interviews Interviewing on campus is very convenient for many students because of time constraints and lack of transportation. Inter-views are most successful following a career fair, or you can set up a resume-collect feature on ClaremontConnect to make interview appointments at your site. Skype is also available, though arrangements must be made in advance. Interview rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tip: Submit your request for on-campus interviews on ClaremontConnect early as space is limited.
Participate in “Beyond the Bubble: Life After Harvey Mudd” seminar seriesA new seminar series provides employers an opportunity to facilitate discussions and interact with Harvey Mudd students. OCS invites employers to lead a session on how to land an internship or job; career preparation and management; or the transition from college to the workplace. If this series is of interest, please contact the OCS director for more information, 909.607.2972.
Tip: Meeting Mudd students in an educational setting is a valuable way to get to know potential candidates.
Consider offering a Clinic ProjectEach year, industry sponsors, such as Aerospace Corporation, Counsyl, Rubicon Project and SpaceX, contribute approxi-mately $40,000 to participate in the Harvey Mudd Clinic Program. Teams of students and company liaisons work together on real, unsolved problems. Clinic projects are an excellent way for Harvey Mudd students to learn on-the-job skills by doing projects for companies and governmental agencies. The Clinic Program is a great way to identify students for possible internships and employment. For more information, refer to the Clinic Program website hmc.edu/clinic.
We recruit at Harvey Mudd College because their graduates are consistently top performers on our engineering team. HMC alumni have become our most influential team members.— KEN JOHNSON, OPTO 22
