mengharapkan sesuatu dari kita yang bila mereka tidak mendapatkannya akan berubah

menjadi tidak suka. So, bisa dibayangkan sedikit sekali orang yang akan menyukai kita,

makany ada orang bijak yang berkata," I can't tell you the key for success but I can tell

you the key for failure ~ try to please everyone!"

Kita tidak akan pernah bisa menyenangkan semua orang; kita tidak akan pernah bisa

membuat semua orang senang dengan keputusan serta dengan apa yang kita lakukan.

Makanya, jangan pernah mencoba untuk menyenangkan semua orang. Seorang Nabi

yang terjaga tingkah laku dan pasti kemuliaannya saja masih banyak yang tidak suka

dan dihina apa yang dilakukannya; apalagi kita yang jelas masih jauh dari level seorang

Nabi.

Skills 7, 8, 9, dan 10

Skill 7 – Mendengarkan Negative Expressions

Negative expressions sangat umum muncul dalam pertanyaan – pertanyaan di

bagian short dialogues.

Sering sekali, jawaban dari pertanyaan yang berisi negative expressions adalah

pilihan yang berisi positive expressions dengan kata yang memiliki makna

berlawanan yang digunakan dalam negative expressions di rekaman.

Contoh:

Man : How did they get to their grandmother’s house in Maine in only five

hours?

Woman : They didn’t drive slowly on the trip to Maine.

Question : What does the woman say about the trip?

Pilihan jawaban:

A. They drove rather quickly.

B. They couldn’t have driven more slowly.

C. They wanted to travel slowly to Maine.

D. They didn’t drive to Maine.

Pada contoh diatas, coba perhatikan kalimat yang diucapkan oleh pembicara

kedua. Ada negative expressions?

Ada. Pembicara kedua berkata: They didn’t drive slowly. Kata “didn’t drive” ini

adalah negative expressions.

Negative expressions bisa dikatakan semua hal yang memiliki ‘not’, seperti did

not, does not, has not, will not, dan lain sebagainya. Nanti akan dijelaskan

rincinya.

Nah, dari kalimat pembicara kedua ini kita tahu bahwa mereka tidak

mengendarai mobil dengan lambat, dengan kata lain mereka mengendarai mobil

dengan cepat.

Jadi, pilihan A yang tepat.

Coba perhatikan kalimat yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua dan pilihan

jawaban A bagaimana maknanya bisa sama dengan kata yang berbeda.

Pembicara kedua : They didn’t drive slowly…

Pilihan yang benar A : They drove rather quickly. (drove disini verb 2 dari drive)

Bisa dilihatkan bagaimana karakter jawaban yang tepat untuk negative

expressions? Singkatnya, kalau mereka tidak mengendarai dengan lambat,

berarti sama dengan mereka mengendarai dengan cepat.

Bagaimana tipe – tipe negative expressions?

Ada tiga tipe negative expressions:

1. Yang menggunakan not atau disingkat n’t, seperti did not, doesn’t,

has not, will not, won’t, dan seterusnya. Intinya yang ada not atau

disingkat n’t.

Contoh: She is not sad about the result.

Kata not sad = happy. Pilihan jawaban yang benar nanti akan bermakna happy

biasanya.

2. Yang menggunakan: nobody, none, never, nothing, no one, dan

semacamnya. Arti kata – kata negative expressions ini tidak ada atau

tidak pernah.

Contoh: Nobody arrived on time.

Kata nobody… on time berarti late. Pilihan jawaban yang benar akan bermakna

semuanya terlambat (late).

She never works hard.

Kata never works hard berarti tidak pernah bekerja keras, artinya sama denagn lazy.

Pilihan jawaban yang benar nanti akan bermakna dia malas (lazy).

3. Kata yang memiliki awalan negative: un-, in-, dis-, im-

Ada kata sifat yang menjadi negatif maknanya ketika ditambahkan awalan – awalan un,

in, im, atau dis.

Contoh: He is very impolite.

Kata impolite = not polite = rude. Pilihan jawaban yang benar nanti akan bermakna dia

rude (kasar).

Perhatikan apa makna negative expressions yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua. Lalu, langsung

balik maknanya dengan menggunakan kata – kata yang positif apa. Lalu, lihat pilihan jawaban.

Ingat, pilihan jawaban yang benar adalah yang menjelaskan makna negative expression dengan

kalimat positif, kata yang digunakan memiliki makna yang berlawanan dengan yang diucapkan

pembicara.

Skill 8 – Mendengarkan Double Negative Expressions

Soal lainnya yang muncul dibagian short dialogues adalah double negative

expressions, yaitu dua ekspresi negative.

Hal yang perlu diingat adalah Double Negative Expressions = Positive

Jadi, kalau ada dua ekspresi negative diucapkan, maka maknanya adalah positif

dan cari pilihan jawaban yang bermakna positif sesuai dengan kalimat yang

diucapkan dalam rekaman.

Contoh:

Man: I can’t believe the news that I heard about the concert.

Woman: Well, it isn’t impossible for the concert to take place.

Question: What does the woman say about the concert?

Pilihan jawaban:

A. There is no possibility that the concert will take place.

B. The concert will definitely not take place.

C. The concert might take place.

D. The concert can’t take place.

Perhatikan contoh diatas, coba cari mana yang double negative expressions

dalam kalimat yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua?

Pembicara kedua mengatakan: .. it isn’t impossible…

Kata ‘isn’t’ adalah negative expression dari is not dan impossible adalah bentuk

negative dari possible. Perhatikan tiga tipe negative expressions di skill

sebelumnya.

Jadi, kalimat yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua ini memiliki negative

expressions: isn’t impossible yang berarti sama dengan possible atau may.

Pilihan C yang tepat karena berisi kata might yang sama dnegan possible.

Bisa dilihatkan kalau pilihan yang benar memiliki makna positif.

Double negatives = positive.

Bagaimana situasi penggunaan double negatives?

Ada tiga situasi yang bisa muncul dalam soal (percakapan):

1. Penggabungan negatives yang menggunakan not dengan yang

menggunakan awalan sepeti in, un, dis, dan lain-lain.

Contoh:

He doesn’t disagree with you.

Double negatives dikalimat ini adalah doesn’t dan disagree, yang berarti agree.

2. Penggunaan dua negatives verb dalam dua klausa di kalimat yang

diucapkan.

Contoh: It isn’t snowing, so they aren’t going to the mountains.

Double negatives dikalimat ini adalah “…isn’t snowing..” dan “..aren’t going..”. Artinya,

kalau snowing, mereka akan pergi.

3. Penggunaan Neither. Neither berarti dia juga tetapi dalam hal negatif.

Contoh: I didn’t like the movie and neither did mark.

Double negatives didalam kalimat ini adalah didn’t like dan neither. Artinya, keduanya

sama-sama tidak menyukai film itu.

Skill 9 – Mendengarkan “Almost Negative Expressions”

Ekspresi dalam bahasa Inggris ada yang bernama “almost negative expressions’.

Ada beberapa pertanyaan didalam short dialogues yang menggunakan eskpresi

ini.

Karena ekspresi ini tidak sepenuhnya negatif, bisa membuat bingung bila tidak

memahami makna serta jenis kata-kata yang termasuk ke dalam almost negative

expressions.

Contoh:

Woman : Were you able to pay the electric bill?

Man : I had barely enough money.

Question : What does the man imply?

Pilihan jawaban:

A. He had plenty of money for the bill

B. He did not have enough money for the bill

C. He paid the bill but has no money left

D. He was unable to pay the bill

Dalam contoh diatas, si pembicara pertama bertanya: Were you able to pay the

electric bill?

Lalu, si pembicara kedua menjawab: I had barely enough money.

Perhatikan, si pembicara kedua tidak menjawab Yes atau No. Jadi, kita tidak

tahu apakah dia bisa membayar bill tersebut atau tidak.

Kita hanya bisa menyimpulkan dari pernyataannya: I had barely enough money.

Beginilah salah satu contoh soal yang menggunakan almost negative expression.

Kata “barely” adalah kata yang termasuk dalam almost negative expression, yang

berarti hampir tidak ada.

Kalimat: I had barely enough money, berarti “Saya hampir tidak punya cukup

uang”.

Kata hampir disini harus dipahami bahwa dia punya uang, tetapi setelah

membayar bill tersebut, tidak ada uang yang tersisa lagi.

Ingat, kata “hampir”, seperti kata barely yang berarti hampir tidak ada, berarti

ada, tetapi pas – pasan.

Oleh sebab itu, jawaban yang benar untuk contoh diatas adalah pilihan C. He

paid the bill but has no money left.

Apa saja kata-kata yang termasuk kedalam almost negative expressions?

1. Kata: hardly, barely, scarcely, only. Arti kata-kata ini adalah hampir

tidak ada. Ingat, ini berarti ada tetapi pas – pasan.

Contoh: There is hardly any food in the refrigerator.

Artinya, makanan itu ada, tetapi sedikit sekali. Hampir tidak ada.

2. Kata: rarely, seldom. Arti kata-kata ini adalah hampir tidak pernah.

Ingat, ini berarti pernah tetapi hanya satu atau dua kali saja.

Contoh: He rarely drives to work.

Artinya, dia satu atau dua kali saja pernah berangkat kerja dengan mengemudi mobil,

hampir tidak pernah, tetapi pernah.

Kata – kata negative bisa digunakan dalam kalimat perbandingan.

Beberapa soal dalam short dialogues menggunakan pola ini.

Yang perlu diingat adalah ketika ada kata negatif yang digunakan dalam kalimat

perbandinga, artinya adalah “yang paling”.

Kalimat perbandingan yang dimaksud adalah yang menggunakan –more atau –

er.

Contoh:

Woman : What do you think of the new student in math class?

Man : No one is more intelligent than she is.

Question : What does the woman say about the new student?

Pilihan jawaban:

A. She is not very smart.

B. He is smarter than she is.

C. Other students are better than she is.

D. She is the smartest student in the class.

Dalam contoh ini, perhatikan kalimat yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua:

No one is more intelligent than she is.

Kata no digabungkan dengan kalimat perbandingan more intelligent.

No one is more intelligent than she is berarti tidak ada seorang pun yang lebih

pintar dari dia. Artinya apa? She is the smartest.

Oleh sebab itu, pilihan D adalah jawaban yang benar.

Ingat, kata-kata negative bila digabungkan kedalam kalimat perbandingan –

more atau –er berarti “yang paling”.

Contoh lain:

- more : No one is more beautiful than she is.

Artinya : she is the most beautiful.

- er : He couldn’t be happier.

Artinya : He is very happy.

Challenging the Uneasy in Real Life and Fiction

I stroll toward Phillip sitting alone on a sofa, and his red and puffy eyes startle me.

“He called me a faggot,” Phillip mutters.

“Who is ‘he’?”

“Ken.”

I first met Ken and Phillip the night before at a gathering in the Leopard Lounge of the Norwegian Gem

Christmas cruise. The gathering seemed almost too good to be true. Eight teenagers began the evening

as strangers and, within minutes, we were talking comfortably.

Phillip and I discovered we both love dance, and he invited me to ice cream in the dining hall. I was

perfecting the swirl on my cone when Phillip tapped my shoulder.

“Can I tell you something kinda personal?” he asked.

My ice cream cone wobbled in my hand as I nodded.

“I’m bisexual,” he said.

“Cool!” I replied.

Yes, so cool to a New Yorker like me — a screenwriter and journalist in search of intriguing stories and

characters. Yet, this story evolved beyond “cool” in complicated ways as my morals and values forced

me to challenge Ken, who had also become a friend. It was easy for me to play the role of comforter to

Phillip. However, confronting Ken, who attended a conservative Christian school in rural Pennsylvania,

was emotionally demanding.

My heart raced as I approached Ken. I didn’t know what to expect when I entered Phillip and Ken’s story

as a new character. I didn’t have lines prepared or any idea how the scene would unfold. I acted on my

values of tolerance, sharing them with Ken. I also listened to him: “There aren’t any gay people where I

come from.” Ultimately, I convinced him to apologize to Phillip. However, on the cruise’s final night, Ken

calls Phillip a faggot again. Phillip smashes Ken’s face into the elevator, telling me with a disturbing

satisfaction: “He got what he deserved.”

I was saddened that my impact on Ken was so minimal, but learned that confronting controversy often

produces complicated and unsatisfying results. A few months later, I volunteered to write a spoof about

Mr. Smith, a controversial biology teacher, for the humor issue of the school newspaper. Some

Nightingale girls objectified Mr. Smith, saying, “Oooh, his pants are so tight.” There was also a video on

Facebook of him dancing at a school party. My piece touched on his clothing and dancing in a satirical

way. The faculty advisors cut my article for “sexualizing a teacher.” The censorship outraged me since I

did not find the article offensive. However, it occurred to me that my innocent joke was inappropriate to

the advisors, due partially to generational differences. Likewise, I found Ken’s description of Phillip

offensive, while those in Ken’s world may have found it harmless because of cultural differences.

Through both experiences, I discovered I am one to consummately question and analyze, refusing to

allow my frustrations to paralyze my explorations of what drives people to act.

Journalism and writing have grown to become my platforms for those explorations. Phillip and Ken

emerged in my conscience when I penned a script in my screenwriting class a year later. My script

follows a girl playing soccer on a boys’ team. Her teammate Gabe opposes her presence and humiliates

her on the field. Although Gabe is the “villain,” I delve into the insecurities driving his actions. Ken

partially inspired Gabe’s character. The two may seem despicable, but I tried to understand them by

digging into the forces that motivate their actions. Similarly, a victim or “good guy,” like Phillip, can be

motivated to do “bad things,” like smashing Ken’s face.

There are few easy rights and wrongs. Regardless, I still consider Ken’s comments to be troubling, think

Mr. Smith would have enjoyed my article, and believe Gabe should welcome his new teammate.

Moreover, I am driven by a passion to address the “uneasy” in real life or fictional universes.
