WinterSummaryThe Suffolk County Athletic
Council issued the final figureson its winter sports calendar lastweek with basketball as the bigfeature.
In total there were 911 varsityand Junior varsity basketballgames played this year whichsaw the West Islip Lions crownedas the County Champions. Localentries West Islip. with a 13-2league record, and Babylon (12-2), captured the League I and IVtitles respectively.
In the county playoffs whichwere conducted at the Long IslandArena in Commack, Walt Whit-man High School in South Hunt-ington and the Suffolk CommunityCollege in Selden the attendance
figure was 12,336, as comparedto the all time high of 13,444set in 1965.
In wrestling, there were 289matches heltf on the varsity leveland 271 on the Junior varsitygrade. The Suffolk Championsfor this year - making it fourin a row - was Lindenhurst.
In addition local schools com-peted in gymnastics, swimming^rifle matches, winter track,bowling, and fencing - all ofwhich went to make up. a wellrounded winter sports programfor the county's high schools.

BASKETBALLOne last winter sports note -
this one on the basketball front-It was announced last week bythe Athletic Council that theCounty Tournament next . yearwill have sixteen teams com-peting for the title instead of theusual twelve. In addition to thesix league champions, and thesix runners-up, four at-largeteams will be selected for thetournament.
The at-large teams will bechosen, by a selection committeeconsisting of one athletic directorfrom each of the six leagues.The purpose for selecting toeadditional four teams is to pro-vide for a sixteen team tourn-ament, without opening-roundbyes, and to provide incentivefor the teams that may have beenhurt by early season injuries orpoor starts, but who have fin-ished strongly.
BASEBALLDeer Park's baseball team shut
out the North Babylon Bulldogslast week 7-0 for their firstOpening day victory. RighthanderJim Valenti and freshman south-paw Bob McGurdy combined tohurl the shut out for the vic-tors. McGurdy was particularlyimpressive as he faced onlyeleven haters and struck outsix, allowed one walk and onebase hit - that a single by MikeBaran.
Last Saturday the West IslipLions got off on the winniqgfoot as they defeated Amityville5-1 in a non-league game. TheLions were also triomphant intennis as they netted a victoryover Lindenhurst 3-2.
The Babylon Panthers, whoopened their season earlier thisweek, take on visiting Bay Shorein a non-league game today andthen visit Connetagiot f or anothernon-league contest tomorrow.Then next Tuesday April 18 thePanthers open their League TVschedule with a 4:00 PM gameslated for Kings Park.

If you could see through thesea of mud last Friday you wouldhave seen the Lindenhurst Bull-dogs post their first varsity winin a lacrosse game as they de-feated West Islip 5-4 in an over-time thriller in the League Iopener for both teams.
The Bulldogs, who had lostboth of their previous non-leaguematches came from behind in thefinal session to tie the scoreand then went on to defeat theLions in overtime.
Bruce Casagrande wasthe starfor the winners as he scored thewinning goal in the first overtime
• ._ _ _r_ • _ _¦ _ m ____* m aperiod. Previously a midfielder,Lindy Coach Frank Rossiswitched him to attack and Cas-agrande responded with a spark-ling performance. He scoredtheinitial goal for the winners toput them on top 1-0 over theLions. Then after West Isliptook the lead 4-3 with six min-utes to go in the contest, Cas-agrande again scored with justover four and one-half minutesremaining to boost the winnersinto a 4-4 tie and the overtime.
In addition toCasagrande,TomPastore (who picked up five as-sists) and midfielders Tom De-Micbele, Jeff Kinne,TimSheltan,and John Wench all stood out ta-ttle victors.
